THE ILL FATE OF KEVER BEMDOO, A STUDENT WHO SHOULD BE MATRICULATING TODAY, IN THE INHUMAN CUSTODY OF THE POLICE.

By: Ukan Kurugh.

Benue State University conducts her matriculation for the 2015/2016 Academic Session today. As joyful as this occasion may be to the new students and their families, it is not to be so for one Kever Bemdoo, a newly admitted student of the institution in the department of Geography, who is languishing in prison over a false imprison by the conduct of the Nigerian police.

To maintain the truth and reality of the story, I will pen down the words of his elder brother who contacted me over what happened. The elder brother, Kever Gbaaondo, a master's degree student of Environmental Sciences, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi narrated thus:

"My younger brother's name is Kever Bemdoo, he was born in 1993 and gained admission this year into Benue State University to study Geography.

On the 3rd of July, 2016 I sent him to our elder sister who stays at 7th Avenue of Inikpi street, to get some money so that we could add up for his school fees. I borrowed a bike from a friend and handed over to him to enable him go fast an come back since I hadn't no money on me to give him for transport fare. Our house is located at Akpehe, so he followed the George Akume ring road and passed through Lord's Chosen Church to reach Old Otukpo road, so as to head down to High level.

At the B Division traffic joint, a traffic warden flashed him down and this was about 3:30pm. Suddenly, some police men emanated and seized him, ordering him down and taking him to the police station. All his efforts as to inquire into his offense failed, as they told him he will understand when he gets to the police headquarters.

In company of other 19 persons and 2 Civil Defense officers, they were taken to the police headquarters and subsequently charged for criminal conspiracy and mischief by fire. Sorrowfully, it was at this point that my brother was told that, a police van had been burnt by some hoodlums. 18 of them excluding the NSCDC officers were then charged to court the next day and then remanded at the Makurdi prisons. Four of them being students of either BSU or UAM.

I sought desperately for the services of a lawyer to procure his bail so that he could continue with his registration in school to no avail as the bail motion was fixed for 26th July, 2016. I write in pain as my poor brother will miss his matriculation and remain where he ought not to be."

First Information Report (FIR) by the police themselves had confirmed the incident occurred at about 1pm, when the innocent boy was arrested at about 3:30pm at a different location.

Pitifully as this may seem, the brothers are helpless and soliciting aid from capable persons to help bail the innocent boy to continue school.

Elder Brothers Phone number: 07038508221. Name: Kever Gbaaondo.
