Fw: Suswam's libel suit begins.

The trial of three persons arraigned before an Abuja Magistrate's Court , sitting in Zone 2, for allegedly defaming the character of Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State in an article published in Power Steering magazine began yesterday with a cross examination of the governor's special adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Cletus Akwaya.

The editor of the magazine, Dan Ekah and two others were arraigned for a "joint act of defamation of character, injurious falsehood, printing or engraving matter, known to be defamatory and sale of printing of engraved substance containing defamatory matter, contrary to Sections 79,392,393,394 and 395 of the Penal Code law."

At the resumed hearing yesterday, Akwaya, who is a prosecution witness in the matter, told the court that he read the said libelous publication in the September 6, 2010 edition of the magazine and found out that the said publication portrayed Governor Suswam as a fake lawyer and that he forged his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate among other information pertaining the governor and members of his family.

Akwaya told the court under cross examination that the said publication was not only written in bad faith but unprofessionally written as the authors did not state whether they made efforts to verify the authenticity or otherwise of the allegations against the governor.

"It was deliberate on the part of the authors of the said publication to publish the said news item with the intention to tarnish or dent the hard-earned reputation, integrity and image of the governor of Benue State before members of the public and thereby lowered his estimation and also demeaned his authourity as the governor of Benue State before the electorate and his constituency," the governor's S.A Media and Public Affairs stated.

Akwaya added that Suswam's credentials as a lawyer, scholar, politician and public servant were outstanding, stressing that the governor is not a cheat and could not subscribe to forgery, and that he had known the governor for a long time to be a man of respect, credible politician, a lawyer and an exemplary family man and not a forger of documents and a fake lawyer as portrayed in the magazine.

The accused persons, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, were admitted to bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in like sum, who must be resident in Abuja.

Our Feature on Autism

Autism Linked to Testosterone.

I just read an interesting article by Dr. Barton–Cohen who is a professor of developmental psychology and the director of the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, England.  He is the principle architect of a theory which suggests that autism is linked to in utero exposure of the fetus to very high levels of testosterone. This interesting hypothesis is that these very high levels of in utero testosterone can lead to extreme masculinization of the brain and the mind of the newborn. In Dr. Barton-Cohen's words, "autism can be thought of as a case of extreme male brain".  This seemed fascinating to me, so I continued to read on.

According to Dr. Barton-Cohen, the hormone testosterone and the genes that regulate testosterone during fetal development may be part of the link to the cause of autism. Although it is known that autism is likely due to complex and multifactorial issues, Dr. Barton-Cohen has found that fetal testosterone levels are typically twice as high in males as in females, and testosterone levels may vary up to 20 times in male fetuses.

Given that the prevalence of autism spectrum conditions is about 1% in the general population, and that classic autism has a male: female ratio of 4:1, and Asperger's syndrome is 9:1, the increased testosterone levels may be significant.

Dr. Barton-Cohen has been conducting an ongoing study looking at 235 developing children whose fetal testosterone levels were known from maternal amniocentesis.  He has followed them for 8 years and had parents rate their children for autistic traits.  He found that the number of autistic traits a child displayed correlated with their fetal testosterone level, regardless of their sex.

He also reported that earlier studies done on these children at 12 months of age, showed that those babies with higher testosterone levels were less likely to make eye contact with the mothers, and at age 2 these children had  more limited vocabulary and language development than did those infants with lower fetal testosterone levels.

So, many of the hallmarks of autistic spectrum disorders include social and communication difficulties, narrow interests, and extreme need for routine. Many would view these characteristics as being extreme "male" interests and behaviors. Does this in any way relate to those higher fetal testosterone levels?  Are these gender differences due to cultural and social influences?  These are very interesting questions and will need even more study.

Dr. Barton–Cohen and other investigators will need to continue to research this very important, yet preliminary hypothesis, to see if they continue to find a correlation between fetal testosterone levels and autistic symptoms.   Any information that brings us closer to solving the puzzle of autism is very exciting.

Since the picture of Denrele and Charley Boy kissing started circulating on the Internet, a lot of people have been debating and asking if both personalities are lovers indeed.

But as the picture has raised so much talk, his Royal Punkness, Charley Boy, is having a ball, not caring about what is being said.

In fact, he said he was the one that released the picture. .he said. He took the pictures during shooting when he called Denrele and told him he was going to kiss him. He then called the cameraman and told him to take the shot," he said.

CB, as he is fondly called, said people should continue talking about him as he didn't care about the controversy the picture has raised.

Hear what he said. "See now, am I not making their lives exciting? Now I have relieved them of their boredom by giving them something to talk about. Let them continue," he said.

CB says he is an artiste, as such, any moves he makes should be allowed.

"I'm trying to make people see beyond the picture. People are busy talking about it," says CB. "You have to have confidence in yourself and be real. Nobody can claim to know me better than myself. The picture was designed to shock timid Nigerians who have chosen to reason like that.

"I came out with a nude picture and it shocked people. People should focus on things that are good, focus on the strength and not the weakness. Don't focus on the hype and trivialities. Focus on things that are profound."

CB says he is out to change lives.

With his Battle of the Gifted, the Area Fada has made an impact in the lives of many Nigerian youths.

"I organise a debate for youths in secondary schools in Abuja, where they come to the Punk Palace, not only for the debate but also for quiz, drama and dance. I was in Ibadan the other day for Dreams Come True competition, which was organised by Jazzy B. The Charley Boy Foundation gave a cash prize of close to one million naira to the winners.

"I'm not claiming to be a saint, but I always tell people to look beyond the ordinary. A lot of people have come to realise that the picture was just a stunt. Some others are of the view that I should have pulled another kind of stunt but how does it look like? Am I not an artiste?

2baba denies feud with Michel Obi

In recent times, rumour mill went agog with the news that Tuface Idibia's song "Only me" was targeted at nigerian footballer, Mikel Obi.

The gist went on to say that "Tubaba" had met Mikel in some lagos night club and made to say hello but was hit with a cold and reluctant Mikel. Hence Tubaba went into the studio and composed "Only me". They pointed at the lyrics "ma lo rope omo pe iwo nikan loma lowo, ma lo rope no bi gbogbo wey go get this money" .

Tuface has just come on twitter to deny that allegation. He tweeted thus:

Daggers are drawn between D'banj and prolific music video director, Clarence Peters. This is as a result of a misunderstanding they had concerning the direction of the video of D'Banj's song - Scape Goat.

The story has it that Dbanj had approached Clarence to direct the video and the latter had provided the budget for it to D'Banj personal manager. According to the director, he presented a unique and costly concept which would have cost around N5million. But seeing that it was on the high side, he had proposed a partnership between his Capital Hills outfit and Mo'Hits which would halve the cost. D'Banj and his people felt offended by the price and waited for their next meeting with the director.

The meeting took place on Monday Oct 18th at the shoot of the MTV Independence anniversary. According to Clarence, D'banj said that he (Clarence) was calling him a 'maga' and trying to swindle him by presenting such a budget. "D'Banj and Bankuli, his personal manager called me all sorts of names and walked out of the shoot." Clarence said

"They talked to us rudely and we even had to restrain some of our crew from attacking them" rapper Illbliss who works with Clarence said.

D'Banj's camp refused to respond to the matter.

Naija Awards Holds 14 Nov 2010.

Naija Awards, the brain child of Tunde Oshinibosi, will hold in November.

The ceremony, which will be conducted in pure Pidgin English, according to  Oshinibosi, will take place at Majestic Rock Hotel, Apapa, Lagos State, Nigeria, on  21 November, 2010.

He said that the awards will cut across all fields of endeavour including music,  movie, football, comedy, Naija in diaspora and post humous awards, among other  things.

He said that reason for holding the award in Pidgin is as a result of the need to  look inwards and to project Nigeria through entertainment with Pidgin English, the  most commonly spoken language in the country.

Tunde Oshinibosi also said Nigerian celebrities will present awards in Pidgin  English at the occasion.

President Goodluck Jonathan drops C-in -C title.

President Goodluck Jonathan has dropped the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces from his official title lists, it was learnt yesterday.

"Mr President has removed the title, 'Commander of the Armed Forces,'' Vice President Namadi Sambo said at the Oxford University where he delivered a lecture to the Oxford International Relations Society.

"He (Jonathan) has directed that he should only be referred to as Mr President,'' Sambo was quoted as saying.

The Vice President who was responding to a question from the audience on why Nigerian leaders were being addressed by series of titles added that the long lists of protocols at official events has also been dropped..

Eighteen months after his wife died,Pastor Kumuyi finds love again.

Eighteen months after he lost his wife, the superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has found love again. 

The wedding, which happened outside the spotlight, was reported to have taken place in the UK, last Wednesday. However, the bride, who sources identified as Esther, is said to be a member of his church. But not much else is known about her, or about their courtship. Details of the wedding ceremony, including venue and attendance, officiating priests, protocols, were closely guarded. 

Responding to a question whether he would remarry after his late wife, Biodun, passed away, the man of God told reporters that it was too early to think of a replacement. It was a highly emotional moment for him, as the bad news came to him while he was delivering a sermon during the church's Easter retreat last year.

Mrs. Kumuyi who died at 57 in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, 2009 at her residence in the International Bible Training Centre, Ayobo, Ipaja, Lagos, following a brief illness, was the National Woman Co-ordinator of the church. She was also International Co-ordinator of the women ministry in Africa and other continents where the church has branches, and was Editor-in-Chief of the well-circulated Women Mirror magazine published by the church. 

Pastor Kumuyi, 71, was introduced to the Apostolic Faith Church, and became born again on Sunday, April 5, 1964. He started the Deeper Life Bible Church, which now has over one million members in more than sixty countries around the world, as a 15-member Bible Study group in Kumuyi's official quarters (Flat 2) at the University of Lagos in August, 1973. Kumuyi was at the time a Mathematics lecturer in the university.

Kumuyi is the latest entrant to the fold of pastors who have new wives: Pastor Taiwo Odukoya of the Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Chris Okotie of the Household of God, and Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of the Trinity House. Only Odukoya, like Kumuyi, remarried after losing his wife, Bimbo
