Miss Philippines, Megan Young, crowned Miss World 2013; Miss Ghana came 3rd (PHOTOS)

A new Miss World was crowned Saturday, and though she competed as Miss Philippines, she hails from the United States.

Megan Young, 23, an aspiring filmmaker, took the top honor at the competition, held in Bali, Indonesia.

“No words! Thank you so much for everyone for choosing me. I promise to be the best Miss World ever,” Young said.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, were second and third runners up, respectively.

Young was born in the United States and moved to the Philippines at age 10, according to her biography.

The new Miss World is a college student who has appeared on screen as an actress and presenter since she was 15.

Young wants to move behind the camera and become a director, according to her bio.

Miss World’s 127 contestants competed in beach fashion, fitness, world fashion, talent and “Beauty with a Purpose” meant to honor charitable work. The top 10 models — from Ukraine, South Sudan, Brazil, the Philippines, France, Cameroon, Cyprus, England, Italy and the United States — were announced earlier this week.

Protesters in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, denounced the event.

In an attempt to appease religious concerns, the pageant scrapped the swimsuit competition and replaced it with less-revealing beachwear attire.

Also, the finals were originally to be held on the outskirts of Jakarta, but protesters forced the event to relocate to the Hindu resort island of Bali.

With excitement building up to The Future Awards Africa 2013, the Central Working Committee(CWC) has unveiled the shortlist of three nominees per category for the Awards scheduled to take place soon.

“It has been an intense period of judging and review,” says Chude Jideonwo, Executive Director of The Future Project. “After the nominations, there was a period of intense research and verification of nominees before the final selection process, thanks to the Independent Audit Committee and the Board of Judges.  They worked tirelessly over two months and are thoroughly proud of the resulting final nominees.”

Members of the Independent Audit Committee include the chief executive of EbonyLife TV, Mo Abudu; politician Jimi Agbaje; Stanbic IBTC director Yemi Osindero; and LEAP Africa founder Ndidi Nwuneli amongst others.

“All the nominees deserve to win and we are immensely inspired by them,” Jideonwo noted. “However, the vetting process has been daunting, and the intense scrutiny that successful nominees have gone through has been illuminating for them as well. We stressed the importance of a combination of structure, quantifiable measures of success and impact, to get the most inspiring and worthy to rise to the top.”

Join Joke Silva, Tiwa Savage & Kate Henshaw On Sept. 28th For The Walk To End Women’s Gynaecological Cancers

TW is 6 on the 30th of September. This year certain harrowing statistics have made TW take on the task of raising awareness on some of the least talked about cancers that occur below the belt, cancers like Colonic, Ovarian and Cervical cancer; among others that are as deadly as they come because of their silent approach. They are mostly gynecologic and it is sad to note that many more women are dying from these cancers that a regular visit to your gynecologist can help detect, because they are completely treatable!

It is for this reason that Zaron is teaming up with TW to give five people who are cancer patients and survivors a makeover. Pot of Gold Africa is lending their support by giving jewellery, Bella Naija is supporting with publicity, and WOW connect event planners are managing. Famed associate professor of Gyneacology, Bosede Afolabi and Dr Ngozi Onyia will be on board to educate and provide basic tests for all participants. The Walk will be taking place on Saturday, September 28th 2013.

Time: 6.30am (Before Environmental Sanitation)

Begins at Four Points Sheraton To Bar Beach & Back.

The Globeathon walk to end cancers below the belt ends with a spa treatment at Four Points. The spa treatment which comes with a healthy lunch is being offered at a heavily discounted price of N10,000 for all participants of the walk.

Yvonne Nelson's Leg Cut Off? (Photo)

We are  at a loss what might have happened to Ghanaian sweetheart Yvonne Nelson.

Apparently, she was involved in an accident of some sort in her role in the upcoming movie, The Bachelors, and her leg had to be amputated. A lot of concerned fans went aghast with horror at the sight of the picture which Yvonne Nelson posted on Instagram two days ago.

We have had numerous calls and emails wanting to know whether it was true that indeed Ms Nelson's leg has been cut off.

What we can confirm from what she posted on Instagram is that Yvonne Nelson from the last time she was sighted in town is hale and hearty. There is nothing wrong with her apart from the fact that she was giving fans a lead into her new production which is yet to hit the Theatres with this post.

She actually wrote "Watch out for this 1!!!! The Bachelors" as she posted the picture. Forget all the rumours going around, there is NOTHING wrong with Yvonne Nelson.

We can't wait to watch this one as we hear it was one challenging role for Yvonne Nelson.
