Thugs Invade Ekiti APC Governorship Primary, Ballot Boxes Destroyed

Suspected thugs have stalled voting at the ongoing governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State.

They attacked the ballot boxes and smashed it to the ground, emptying the ballot papers on the ground.

The security agencies, who were caught unawares, had a serious time as they tried to bring the situation under control.

The chairman of the Election Committee and Governor of Nasarawa State, Umar Al- Makura, is currently in an emergency closed - door meeting with all the aspirants.

Ajimobi Equates Buhari With Jesus, Muhammed

The Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, has said that if Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammed could be subjected to abuses and disrespect, mere mortal President Muhammadu Buhari should expect more.

Ajimobi, who spoke in Ibadan on Friday evening while receiving members of the National Congress Committee of APC at the Government House, insisted that no other president in the country has managed the nation’s economy better than Buhari.

It was reported that the committee led by Alhaji Musa Aliyu were in the state for the ward congress of the APC scheduled to hold on Saturday. He said, “I read Economics and Finance, and there is no economic theory that we have not read. The most important part of all the economic theory is leadership.

“And Nigeria is lucky to have that leadership. There is no president in Nigeria that has ever managed the economy like Buhari.” He further said Buhari was the most credible president that Nigeria has ever produced.

“I was in one of Buhari’s delegation to London and when he was asked to speak he said ‘I have no money to distribute. All I have been selling is my integrity,” he added. “Politics is just a game that if God plays it, some people will abuse Him no matter the performance. I use to tell the president anytime I meet him not to worry people are abusing him.

“I told him that people abused Prophet Muhammed and Jesus Christ, who are godsent not to talk of us ordinary human beings. That is why God has created the world a binary one,” he said. Ajimobi promised that the congress committee would not be influenced, assuring them of their support.

Earlier, Aliyu said the committee was in Ibadan on a national assignment of the party, which he said the committee would do satisfactorily. He said that the party was known for internal democracy, adding such was the cardinal principle preached by Buhari, the leader of the party. “We intend to work closely with the local chapters in achieving the desired success, so that the party will come out strongly.”

Adamawa, Oyo APC Postpone Ward Congress Over Violence

The All Progress Congress (APC) in Adamawa State has postponed their ward congress exercise to Sunday, May 6, 2018.

The chairman of the Congress says the postponement will provide equal opportunities for all members of the party interested in picking nomination forms to do so and return to their wards.

The postponement came after the Congress degenerated into a chaotic session when a group with some top members of the party were denied nomination forms.

Members were asked to provide evidence of payment for each person within the group as no form will be sold in bulk.

The development almost turned the secretariat to a rowdy session.

Also in Oyo State, the APC has postponed its ward congress to Sunday after a violence that disrupted the secretariat before the commencement of the exercise.

OUR FEARS, RESOLVE — Catholic priests whose colleagues were murdered in Benue

Two weeks after the brutal murder of two of their colleagues by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Catholic priests in Benue State have expressed shock over the development they described as horrific.

Some of the priests, who spoke with The Nation, said that while the ugly development engendered fear, it was incapable of making them to abandon their vocation as priests.

One of them, Rev. Fr. Amos Mbachie, said that all the priests in the state were saddened by the incident. He said: “We are not happy because of this development. It has been paining us right from the beginning, 2012 to be specific, when these things started. But it is biting us more now that it is hitting the church directly.

It is all the more painful because it was an unprovoked attack.” The murdered priests, according to Fr. Mbachie, “were saying their normal mass in an environment that was ordinarily not tense, but they came directly for them. So, we are very sad and very distressed. It is a challenging time for the church.”

Explaining his relationship with his deceased colleagues, he said: “I hail from the denary where the incident occurred. Culturally, I belong to this section of Tiv land where the thing took place. I had a direct contact with the two priests because for a long time, I have been the bishop’s secretary. One of them is from my own community. It is a personal thing to me.

“There was no premonition of this attack. They were busy living their normal life when they were killed. It was an act of terrorism that was directly targeted at the church, because when they came, the other priest was saying Mass and they killed him.

“The other one was saying funeral Mass few meters from the parish and they went and killed him alongside some parishioners. It was a direct attack, to the extent that they started burning houses within the community.”

Asked if he and his colleagues would have the courage to continue with their work in the state, Fr. Mbachie responded: “We cannot be scared from doing our work. We know that this is aimed at frustrating us. It is aimed at trying to intimidate us, but we can never be cowed. We can never give in to fear, because we believe that we have a right to do what we are doing in a country that is free, a country that allows freedom of worship, a country that has responsibility to look after us and protect us.

“We cannot begin to run away from our duty. Yes, there is fear. As human beings, there is fear—the feeling that this thing can come to you. But we are not ready to abandon our calling because of this development. He hinted that the priests were waiting for instructions from Catholic bishops to know the next line of action.

“But we have our own way of crying out. Talking to you is one of the ways. We believe it is the duty of the government to protect us. We have been saying this long ago.

“Everything is about security. If there was security in that community, may be the Fulani herdsmen would have been afraid to attack the area. In the whole community, there is no police station.”

Speaking on the mood of the Catholic faithful in the diocese, he said: “There is anger, frustration, and pain running through the minds of the people, because they feel the government cannot protect them. If we didn’t stop the people, by now, a lot of damage would have been done. We are still begging people to calm down up till now.

“The day the incident happened, the angry members of the church wanted to break the mortuary and remove the priests’ bodies to demonstrate, but we calmed them down because we felt we should not add more confusion to what had happened.”

He added: “Even as I speak with you, the people are not protected. Many of our parishes are closed down. The priests themselves are refugees. The late Fr. Felix was a refugee. He left his duty post after the Fulani herdsmen sacked that community. The bishop asked him to assist in another community but they went and killed him there.

“That is why we are of the opinion that this is being done in collusion with the security agencies. We are completely dissatisfied with the way the government is going about the whole thing. People around the area know them.

“Why can’t the government use the same force they used against Boko Haram to deal with these people? If security people are not able to do what they are supposed to do, I must tell you that they are complicit in these killings. One can accuse them directly.”

Rev Fr. Murphy Michael, an Ireland missionary who said he has spent 57 years in Nigeria, regretted that the problem which started as a feud between farmers and herdsmen has assumed a religious dimension.

He said: “It was a shock to hear about the murder of our priests. I never believed that such thing could happen in Nigeria. Things have reached a new level. Before, the problem was about grazing but now, it has become a religious issue. It has never happened before that people will go inside a church and kill the priests and the worshippers.

“It is a very serious problem. The tension is very high and many people are afraid to live in their place which they call homes and there is a movement of people.

That is a problem because of feeding and helping them to survive.”

In spite of the daunting challenge they are faced with, the Vicar General of the Makurdi Diocese said: “As priests, we are not deterred. Whether we are killed or not, our work will still continue. The attendance in church last Sunday was very good.

“I didn’t know the late priests very well, because one was ordained four years ago and the other one year ago, and they were both working on the outskirts. I didn’t have a close relationship with them.”

Recalling the time he newly arrived in the country, Fr. Murphy said: “I have been in Nigeria for the past 57 years, and it is amazing how we have a situation like this. When I came here in 1961, you could walk all over Nigeria day and night and you were safe.

“We have no fears because we are in the hands of God. But if your life is in danger, you have to fight back if you are able to do that. But you cannot fight back with a machete against the gun. That is the problem.

“These herdsmen are heavily armed while the people themselves have no defence. All they have is machetes or sticks. The Federal Government should do everything they can to protect our people.”

The amiable priest said his people back home were concerned about his safety in the volatile area. But he said that, that was not enough reason for him to abandon his flock in the troubled Makurdi Diocese.

“This is part of missionary life,” he said. “I have no plan to travel back home because of this. I have no fear about that. I am here to do my work because that is what God is asking me to do.”

A former Rector of Spiritual Year Programme, Rev.Fr. Emmanuel Egbiase, in an emotion laden voice, told our correspondent that “when you lose a beloved one, one way or the other, it affects you. There is no doubt about that. But because we are men of faith, we know from church history and our belief that the blood of the martyr is the foundation of the church. We take consolation in the fact that they would be duly rewarded by God.

“So, we see them as heroes of our faith. We do not see them as people who had been unfortunate. We see them as people who have been fortunate to share in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ because He shed His blood for the word of God.

These same colleagues of ours who died recently have also offered their lives. Moreover, they died in active service.”

He added: “We give glory to God. We do not feel let down. We do not feel disappointed. We are not even so angry that they died. We thank God that they had the opportunity to die worthy martyrs’ death.”

Further bemoaning the attack, Fr Agbiase said: “It is not always a good thing in a country where we have freedom of worship, so to say, that people of other faith would rise up against others to terminate their lives. It will definitely affect the faith of the lay people because their faith may not be as strong as that of the priests.

“It is not good for the church that people would lose their lives in such unfortunate circumstance.”

To stop subsequent attacks on the church and the people, Fr Agbiase advocated self-defence, saying: “We must rise up to defend ourselves. Self-defence is a natural right that God has given to man. Even the Catholic catechism encourages us to defend ourselves.

“Self-defence is not against Christian way of life. It is God given right to every human and not just Christians. Self-defence does not mean that we should pick up arms and search for our adversaries and hunt them down. But we must give ourselves protection, and if it is necessary, to use firearms and other weapons to defend ourselves. I think the time is now.”

Also toeing the path of his colleagues, he said: “I would not for any reason leave my job as a priest or leave the diocese. I will never go anywhere because my life is threatened.

I will stand there and defend myself, and if I die, I die for the faith.” He added: “The people are quite angry, but they are highly spirited. They understand the teachings of the church. There may be hidden fears but they should also know that a Christian should be able to offer his life for the sake of others.

“I don’t think they will be rattled to the extent that they would not go to church. Even in their various homes, are they safe?”

He lamented that the government has done the church and the people a great disservice, adding: “I am in one accord with the Catholic bishops in the communiqué they released recently. It is the government’s duty to protect lives and property, and they have failed in that direction.

“They must rise up to their duty to save lives and property, because that was the primary oath they swore to.”

The Director of Catholic Education Service in the diocese, Rev. Fr. Godwin Udaa, feared that the unfortunate attack could lead to religious war, adding: “It is really sad that priests can be killed. It is sad that they have gone to the level of killing people in the church. My concern is that this crisis should not turn to a religious war.

“The entire thing has happened and we pray that the Almighty God will put a stop to it. We also pray that the Federal Government will realise that one of the cardinal points of any government is protection of lives and property.

He further said: “On your question about if we are living in fear, who doesn’t love his life? We know we are all going to die, but it should not be through brutal way. The most surprising thing is that up till this moment, the government has not been able to give a name to the people who are killing everybody in the country, especially here in Benue State.

“Let us try and give it a name now. If they are an offshoot of ISIS, let us know. If they are an offshoot of Boko Haram, we should know. It is very difficult to fight a group that doesn’t even have a name. Let the Federal Government, the state government and other stakeholders try and tag this people. If not, we shall continue to live in fear.”

He advised: “The governments, both at the federal and state levels, should wake up to their responsibilities. What are they doing with the security vote that they are getting when people are being slaughtered like goats?

“That security vote should be stopped, because how can they continue to collect millions of naira without safeguarding the lives of the people? The purpose of giving them the money is defeated.”

The killing of his colleagues, according to him, “cannot make me to quit the priesthood or the diocese. People die not because they are priests. What about those who were not priests but had been killed? It is not a question of leaving the priesthood. That is far from it.

“What is happening now is that if you will be killed, you will be killed. You can be travelling on the road and they would attack and kill you..."

$496m jets: Buhari presents documents, US letter to the National Assembly

The Presidency has presented documents and a letter from the United States Government to the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters on why it decided to pay $496 million for 12 Super Tucano fighter jets in anticipation of approval by the National Assembly.

It said the US Government gave a February 20, 2018 deadline to effect the payment or wait for another two years to renegotiate.

The Presidency also gave a list of precedents by past governments which embarked on similar purchases or expenditures due to exigencies.

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Manir Dan Ali; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN); the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun and all other ministers connected with the payment for the jets have either responded to enquiries from the committee or appeared before the Senate team.

Investigation  revealed that the Presidency insisted that it acted in the national interest and that no cash was diverted or shared under the table.

It explained that there was no trace of scandal because it was “purely a government to government transaction.”

One of the documents was a letter from the United States Government, which indicated a February 20 deadline to pay for the Super Tucano jets.

A top source in the Presidency said: “The payment of the $496 million for the Super Tucano jets was not ill-motivated or scandalous as being painted.

“It was effected in the interest of the nation’s security and not an attempt to undermine the National Assembly in any form.

“If you go to Section 82 of the 1999 Constitution, it says the President may authorise withdrawal of money from the Consolidated Revenue of the Federation for the purpose of meeting expenditure necessary to carry on the services of the Government of the Federation for a period not exceeding six months until the coming into operation of the Appropriation Act.

“There were also past precedents by some ex-Presidents, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Mallam Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.”

The source gave insights into such expenditures on exigencies by past presidents as follows:

$17.7 billion withdrawn by Obasanjo from the excess crude account to pay the Paris Club and fund two projects without the National Assembly’s approval.

Excess Crude Account (ECA) depleted by the Yar’Adua-Jonathan administration from $20 billion in 2008 to less than $4 billion in 2010 without input by the National Assembly.

$5 billion taken from ECA by the administration of Yar’Adua for power generation
Over $2 billion withdrawn in 2014 by the Jonathan government for the purchase of equipment to fight Boko Haram. There is no evidence of consultation with the National Assembly.

The source added: “The Presidency has provided a list of similar expenditures by past Presidents to the Senate Committee to prove that there was no constitutional violation to warrant the so-called impeachment motion.”

Speaking with our correspondent on the latest development, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Sen. Ita Enang said: “The Senate Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters looking into the payment of the $496 million to the US Government raised some questions for relevant ministers to answer.

“Some of these questions have been answered and are being answered to the satisfaction of the Legislature.

“We have provided many documents and a letter from the US Government which stated that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has until February 20 to pay for the jets.

“The letter said if this administration defaulted on the deadline, it would cancel the request for the purchase of the jets and Nigeria would have to wait for another two years to renegotiate.

“We have also laid in evidence President Donald Trump’s admission of the sale of the $496 million Super Tucano jets to the Federal Government and what he said on the integrity of President Buhari.”

Responding to a question, Enang said: “We are doing a lot of rapprochement with the National Assembly for an enhanced understanding and collaboration between the two arms of government.

“We are actually reaching out to the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“We are doing everything to stave off any issue relating to impeachment.”

Following the approval of $1 billion by the National Economic Council (NEC) to address security emergencies in the nation, the Federal Government had withdrawn $496 million out of the sum to pay for 12 Super Tucano Jets.

Buhari, in a letter to the National Assembly, said in part: “I wish to draw the attention of the Senate to the ongoing security emergencies in the nation.

“These challenges were discussed with the state governors and subsequently at the meeting of the National Economic Council on the 14th of December 2017 where a resolution was passed with the council approving that up to $1 billion may be released and utilised from the Excess Crude Account to address the situation.

“In the expectation that the National Assembly would have no objection to the purchase of this highly specialised aircraft, which is critical to national security, I granted anticipatory approval for the release of US$496,374,470.00.”

But the National Assembly faulted the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for engaging in anticipatory withdrawal when the National Assembly was yet to approve the $1 billion request.

They accused the President of violating sections 80, 81 and 143 of the 1999 Constitution.

On Thursday, Sen. Matthew Uroghide, Edo State, said President Buhari’s move was a violation of the constitution.

While Uroghide urged the Senate to invoke Section 143 to start the President’s impeachment process, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, who seconded the motion, declared: “This is an impeachable offence.”

But President Buhari said he gave approval for the withdrawal of the fund because he believed the National Assembly would have no objection to his action.

In the House of Representatives, Hon, Kingsley Chinda (Rivers State) raised a constitutional point of order based on the provisions of sections 80 and 81 of the 1999 Constitution.

He said: “There is nowhere in our law that talks about anticipatory approval. We cannot sit down and allow this to take place. It is an impeachable offence.

“There is no infraction that is worse than this. Let us not continue to sleep. I propose that we commence the impeachment of Mr. President.”

Backing the motion, Hon. Sunday Karimi (Kogi State) asked Buhari to be “prepared to face the consequences.

The three senators representing Kaduna are very useless – Governor El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has accused the three senators representing the state of working against a World Bank loan request by the state government, saying they are useless and ignorant.

The governor made the comment on Friday, five weeks after the senators — Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central), Sulieman Hukunyi (Kaduna North), and Danjuma Leah (Kaduna South) — blocked a $350m loan request by the Kaduna government, according to a report by The Cable.

The state had sought to get the facility from the World Bank but the federal lawmakers said the loan would erode the economic viability of the state.

But el-Rufai, while speaking at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress’ campaign for the local government election in the state at the Kaduna Township Stadium, described the lawmakers as the enemies of democracy.

The governor, who spoke in Hausa, told the thousands of people at the venue that the senators conspired to stop his government from obtaining the loan to build infrastructure and develop the state.

He said, “The senators from the state who worked against the World Bank loan are useless; they came out and said this loan should not be given. What is their reason for rejecting the loan? It is because they are haters of the masses in Kaduna State.

“If a road project is initiated in your town, they don’t want it to be completed. If we start renovating a hospital, they don’t want it to be completed. If five schools are renovated and 10 are remaining, they will not want the remaining 10 to be renovated.

“Today, there are no haters of the masses of Kaduna State like Shehu Sani, Suleiman Hunkuyi and Danjuma Laah, God will curse them. God will reward their wickedness against the masses, may God never bless them. All members of the House of Representatives from this state, God bless them, may God return them to their seats in 2019.

“Members of our state (House of) Assembly who gave us their cooperation before the World Bank approved the loan to us, may God bless them and may God return them to their seats in 2019. But those ones that are cursed, if they come to Kaduna, shave their heads and beard. They have shown that they are bastards, they have no origin, therefore, it is important to tell them that they did not originate from this state.

“If the time for election comes, answer them with votes, show them that you don’t like them… Let them go back to where they come from. Let them go to the people they are working for to vote for them.

“I want my people to comprehend the simple logic that the three senators representing my state at the Senate are starkly ignorant of the real indices of development and progress in a democratic setting.”

El-Rufai also said his administration had invested considerably in electronic voting because he believed that votes must count during elections

I dance with inspiration, I trained Davido – Ademola Adeleke

Senator representing Osun West in the National Assembly, Ademola Adeleke, has said that dancing does not affect his thinking.

Ademola, who has declared interest to run for the governorship position of the State, said this in an interview with Punch.

The lawmaker who replaced his late elder brother, Isiaka Adeleke in the senate, said he is a deep thinker.
He also said he trained his nephew, David Adeleke, a.k.a Davido to become a music star.

Asked why he dances in almost every occasion, Adeleke said, “Don’t you also dance in church and when you have joyous occasions?

“Well, I dance because I am happy and grateful to God. I am not a pretentious person but the dancing aspect is just a minor aspect of me. I am a deep thinker and solution- finder.

“For example, in one of my recent visits to one of the local governments in my senatorial district, I came in contact with a group of retirees who said they had always wanted to meet with me because I always exude joy and confidence.
“These were senior citizens who needed encouragement in their difficult situation occasioned by the failure of the APC government in Osun State.

“Of course, I spent quality time with them and shared some of the resources God has given to me to make them even happier. That to me is the essence of life
On training Davido he added, “Yes, I did train him a few skills which by the Grace of God are helping him today in his career. Our family is very proud of him.”

Herdsmen killings: It’s time for Buhari’s retirement

The Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said that priests in Benue State may be forced to pick up arms and defend themselves against being killed by rampaging herdsmen.

He noted that the security agencies have been watching as herdsmen slaughter innocent citizens of the country even in their worship places.

The Bishop maintained that living in peace was less expensive than going to war, but insisted that the people would not continue to fold their hands and die on a daily basis.

Speaking with the Sun,he advised President Muhammadu Buhari to shelve the idea of returning to power in 2019.

According to him, “They have not done so. That is not our way and I don’t think they will. And I am hoping that we have not reached that stage yet. But you could reach that stage.

“Yesterday, they killed us, the next day, they killed us, the policemen are around and they have done nothing. And the police are given guns and they don’t use them.

“The Army comes and moves around and nothing happens. They are not going to wait for me to tell them what to do. They don’t want that to continue and all we have been telling government is please, don’t push people too far.

“It is not possible to tell us that Nigeria is unable to secure our territory. We cannot believe it, to tell us that it is beyond the possibility of the police; that the whole Nigerian Army with the billion naira and the billion dollars budgets that we are spending; they still can’t keep us safe.

“And they want me to believe that? We can’t believe it, which is why we are saying no, there is something seriously wrong which must be addressed quickly because at the end of the day, everybody is going to suffer.

“As you know, most of us, at least, are pleading that we live in peace with one another because living in peace is less expensive than going to war. Also, when you go to war, who wins?

“Whoever is stronger wins, not who is right. The Pope used to say that we must replace the right of force with the force of right. That is where we are now. Don’t forget that somebody (Gen. TY Danjuma) who ought to know did make a statement about get ready to defend yourselves.

“And he should know what he is talking about. And he clearly accused government of collusion. That is serious.

“For various reasons, personally, if he (Buhari) came to me for advice, I will tell him it is time for retirement.”

Disagreement over ‘dirty Naira Note’ turns bloody in Lagos

A disagreement between a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger over a dirty Naira Note on Saturday in Lagos turned bloody as irate youth beat the cyclist to a state of comma.

Our reporter who witnessed the incident reports that the cyclist, identified as Okon Akpan, had conveyed his passenger, also identified as Miss Titilope Fatai, from Okokomaiko to Iyanoba market for a fee of N200.

Trouble however started when Fatai gave the cyclist N500 but when Akpan gave his passenger her N300 balance, made up of N200 and N100 Notes, the lady returned the N100 Note and requested for replacement on the grounds that it was “too dirty”.

A heated argument ensued as the cyclist insisted he did not have a neater Note to replace the ‘smelling’ one as demanded by his passenger.

As Akpan tried to leave without reaching an accord, the lady slapped him and he in return, started beating her.

Unkown to the cyclist, the lady was popular among the street unchains around, who in turn, reacted by also giving Akpan a thorough beating to a state of unconsciousness, and thereafter dispersed.

His fellow commercial motorcyclists had to come to his rescue, after which they took him to an undisclosed hospital.

A Traffic Policeman at the scene, Mr Uzochukwu Amadi, described as ‘dreadful’ the behavior of the youth.

Reacting to the incident, a lecturer with the Lagos State University,Dr Kaka Afolabi, appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria to inject new Naira Notes into the system, adding that the current ones in circulation were ‘eye sores’.

“We expect the authorities concerned to act quickly before more Nigerians fall victims of dirty Naira Notes.

“Our present N100 is the worse; it is no longer durable and its acceptability has become subject of debates during transactions, thereby leading to quarrels in most cases,’’ he noted.

Delta APC chairmanship candidate assassinated by unknown gunmen

There may be no Nigeria or general elections in 2019 – Pastor Adeboye warns

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch A. Adeboye has warned that there might be no Nigeria in 2019, not to talk about a general election.

The cleric was quoted as saying on Friday, at the May 2018 Holy Ghost service that there was no way he could continue to keep quiet while the killings, which had been counted in thousands this year alone, went on.

It came against the backdrop of the recent killings of two Catholic Church priest in Benue State, a fortnight ago and several attacks on churches, which prompted US President, Donald Trump to vow before President Muhammadu Buhari in Washington that he would do something, very quickly to end the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

Adeboye, speaking on the theme, ‘Stronger Than Your Enemies – 5 (Habitation of the Almighty)’ said: “There is no father that will lose 19 children in a day and be quiet. It doesn’t matter the denominations. All Christians in Nigeria call me daddy, so when anyone of them dies it’s my son that is dead.
“We need to pray because unless these killings stop immediately even Nigeria may not live. We are not talking about individuals we are talking about Nigeria itself.

“A bishop asked me sometimes ago what God has revealed to me about 2019 election.

“I told him I am not sure there would be an election because unless these killings stop, there may be no election next year, I’m not prophesying but this is so because no one will go out to vote if not sure they will return home safely.

“I have seen war at a close range, there is nothing good about it. A nation may survive a civil war but no nation can survive a religious war and remain the same.

“That Nigeria may live and not experience religious war these killings must stop.”

My quest for second term not for personal gain - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said his quest for second term was not borne out of personal gain.
Rather , he said his decision to seek re - election was as a result of a deep passion to serve Nigerians.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu, the President spoke at the All Progressives Party’ s Ward Congress held at Bayagida Model Primary School , Daura, Katsina.

He said the driving force for seeking public office should be to serve the people , and see their lives improved , not for frivolity or personal ambition.

Buhari said the passion to serve and see real changes in the lives of Nigerians informed his choice to join partisan politics in the first place.

This , he said , further inspired him to contest elections in 2003 , 2007 , 2011 and 2015.

Buhari noted that his administration had already started the process of ensuring fairness , justice and equity , in spite of challenges , and would work hard to consolidate on the gains.

“I am not in politics for fun, frivolity or to amass wealth , I have always been driven by a deep sense of commitment to make a difference to the lives of our people.

“ After my retirement from the army , or forceful retirement, I sat back and watched as events unfolded on the political turf , and realised the country needed an intervention for fairness , justice and inclusion of Nigerians in the issues that affect their lives , ’’ he said.

The President called for patience , maturity and orderliness as the 2019 elections’ calendar begins to unfold.

APC party supporters attack secretariat, one shot dead, several injured in Rivers State.PHOTOS.

At least one person was shot dead and many injured after pandemonium broke out today at the Rivers State Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress, along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt. The chaos happened after protestors went violent and destroyed properties at the secretariat.

It was gathered that armed policemen and other security operatives fired live bullets as they were mobilized to the area after some protesters became violent and vandalized the APC office.

Earlier, the leadership of the All Progressive Congress in Rivers State, had denied claims by a section of the party that materials for the local government congresses have been hijacked.

The APC spokesman said the delegation from Abuja had their flight delayed, hence the exercise was rescheduled for later in the day.

However, the protesters, who were led by the State Deputy Chairman APC, Peter Odike, alleged that, “Some of their intending delegates had been deliberately deprived of the forms to participate in the congresses tomorrow.”

The APC protesters complained that the State Chairman and other officials were not at the secretariat to attend to them, less than twenty-four hours to the congresses.

PDP panel to discuss name change, bring back defectors

The national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated a contact committee for the purpose of aligning with other political parties ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The committee, which is headed by a former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Liyel Imoke, will also explore the possibility of tinkering with the name and insignia of the PDP.

Some key stakeholders, particularly prominent chieftains of the PDP that defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, are said to have insisted on a change of name, as one of the conditions to rejoin the PDP.

Prominent among among the APC chieftains being wooed by the leadership of PDP include the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; former Kono State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; his Sokoto State counterpart, Aliyu Wamakko; and former Gombe State Governor, Danjuma Goje. Incidentally, all of them are prime members of the Senate.

Overtures are also being made to woo the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Tambuwal had defected from PDP to the APC at the tail end of his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Many serving APC members in the two chambers of the National Assembly are also said to be waiting in the wings, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Investigation further revealed that the high profile politicians are being wooed with tickets for choice offices, including the presidential slot.

But the heavy baggage of corruption trailing the PDP has made it difficult for prospective defectors to cross over from the APC and other political parties.

A prominent chieftain of the PDP confided in our correspondent on Friday that indeed, the major task of the committee is to make wide consultations regarding the propriety or otherwise of name change.

The source, who did not want to be named said, “Yes, we are seriously concerned about the issue of name change, as being demand by some of the intending returnees.

“But I must let you know that not all of them are assisting on name change because they can see through the veil of deception in the APC government’s anti-corruption campaign”.

Our correspondent further gathered that the leadership and key stakeholders in the PDP may have narrowed the search for the party’s presidential flag bearer to only two individuals -a serving governor and a serving senator from the same geopolitical zone.

The two politicians are believed to have enough political cloud to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s pre-2015 cult-like followership, particularly among the masses in the Northwest geopolitical zone.

While inaugurating the committee on Friday, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus said the party would do everything within the confines of the law to regain power in 2019.

Secondus said the past three years of President Buhari’s administration had convinced Nigerians of the need for a credible alternative in 2019.

The party chair tasked members of the committee to reach out to Nigerians and groups on the need to forge a common front for what he described as the “political salvation” of the country.

Secondus said, “Your committee and your nomination into it is a well-articulated decision of the party leadership to bring our open door policy to fruition.

“Just as your name connotes, you are to deploy your well versed network to help open the space and allow into our party, all those whose union with us can help in rescuing this country.

“Like we always say in this party, this umbrella is big enough to accommodate all people of patriotic ideals”.

The committee chairman Imoke promised to work tirelessly to deliver on the mandate, stating that the situation in the country has become too dangerous for well-meaning Nigerians to fold their hands in resignation.

Other members of the committee include former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; his Niger State counterpart, Babangida Aliyu; and former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam (Benue).

Others a former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii; former Aviation Minister, Kema Chikwe; and a former national chairman of the PDP, Bello Haliru Mohammed among others.

Call Osinbajo to order for peddling falsehood against me - Jonathan tells Pastor Adeboye

Former President Goodluck Jonathan wednesday asked the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, to call the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to order for peddling falsehood against his person.

Jonathan added that even after Osinbajo had been called upon repeatedly“to respect his supposed pastoral calling and stop his nasty habit of lying, he refuses to heed these calls and continues to spew falsehood.”

These were contained in a statement the GEJ Media Office issued yesterday, pointing out unfounded allegations the vice president had made at different times against the person of the former president.

Last Tuesday, Osinbajo had at The Platform, a programme organised by the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos alleged that three unnamed persons stole $3 billion (N1 trillion) in the Jonathan administration.

On March 19, also, Osinbajo alleged that the Jonathan administration shared N150 billion two weeks to the 2015 elections while it spent a paltry N14 billion on agriculture in 2014; N15 billion on transportation and only N153 billion on infrastructure in three years.

But in a statement issued by his media office Wednesday, Jonathan called Pastor Adeboye to caution Osinbajo to stop peddling falsehood against his person.

If Osinbajo fails to heed this advice, the former president urged the cleric “to remember that the RCCG ordains its pastors not to lie but to spread the word of God, “asking if “this is what Vice President Osinbajo is doing?”

Jonathan recalled that Osinbajo falsely alleged that he took N100 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in cash to his personal house in Abuja.

When challenged to provide proof of his fallacious claims, the former president disclosed that the vice president hid behind ‘sources’ and began to feed stories from anonymous officials to the media.

This time around, according to him, Osinbajo alleged that three persons working in his government looted $3 billion from the country’s resources without providing proofs to back his allegation against his administration.

He, thus, noted that the vice president “is a liar, forgetting or perhaps not caring that the devil is the father of all liars. I challenge him once again to prove me wrong by mentioning those three people and providing proof that they stole the amounts allegedly stolen.

“It is sad that at a time when the Buhari administration should be telling Nigerians what they have achieved after three years, they continue to blame and point fingers. The reason for this is because neither Buhari nor Osinbajo can point to any project that they have initiated, started and completed in three years,” he explained.

Jonathan noted that the people of Nigeria voted for Buhari and Osinbajo because they said subsidy was a fraud and would be stopped; that fuel would be sold at 40 per litre, and that fuel scarcity would end.

After three years, Jonathan said the Buhari administration “is paying more subsidy than former President Jonathan ever paid at 1.4 trillion annually. Fuel price was increased from 87 to 145 per litre, Fuel scarcity is worse.

“Faced with these facts, a desperate Buhari administration, wanting to be re-elected and knowing that it cannot run on its record, has devised a plan to distract attention from its woeful record of failure by making constant false allegations on my person.”

He lamented that the Buhari administration “has yet to tell Nigerians what happened to the $25 billion that was awarded in contracts without due process by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).”

He sought to know how “Maina was returned, reinstated, double-promoted and given armed guards or why the indicted Executive Secretary of Nigerian Health Insurance Scheme was reinstated despite a clear case of corruption or when Babachir Lawal would be charged.

“Instead, they continue to throw mud at those who have achieved what they have not achieved. If Osinbajo cannot stop his habit of lying, I hereby call on Pastor Adeboye to withdraw his pastorate before he brings the church of Christ into disrepute.”
