2019: Only someone from the moon or ground can defeat Buhari, says Gov Masari

Mallam Aminu Bello Masari the governor of Katsina State has said that President Muhammadu Buhari can only be defeated in the coming 2019 Presidential election if those or the person he will be contesting against is from the moon or the ground.

Masari made this known in an interview with the Leadership newspaper when asked what were his take on the opposition party’s moves in seeking  a single candidate that will challenge President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 he said :’ Well, unless someone is going to come out from the ground, of all the people we are seeing lining up in the PDP, they are characters known to Mr President and all of us. We know their weight, capability and the resourcesfulness of all of them. Unless from the moon or from the ground, there is no one to match the integrity of Mr President.

‘We are waiting for that miracle to happen but if these characters that are jumping from pillars to post, fortune hunters or power hunters, if you are talking about those kind of people, I am not the spokesman of the president, but I assure you that the president is ready, and willing to confront them anytime, any day and anywhere.

Masari also said that because he believes in God and believes in time he wants to win the election in 2019 in a way that they will support other areas that didn’t deliver as much as they did in 2015.

He warned those littering the streets and disturbing traffic with posters that he was not going to allow such saying that If you want to put a billboard of the president in his state such individual should go and pay.

Imo: Police parade suspects arrested for forgery, theft of APC wards, LG electoral materials

THE Force Headquarters, Saturday night, paraded four persons arrested in an Abuja hotel with result sheets of last week’s ward congress in Imo State.

Visible among the suspects was one Engr. Ipanesie Innocent, a Special Assistant to Senator Hope Uzodinma on Electoral Matters.

The suspects, who were paraded at the Force Headquarters by Mr Jimoh Moshood, Force Headquarters’ spokesman, were picked up in a hotel located in Wuse 2 area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The suspects’ name were given as Engr. Ipanesie Innocent, 39 years, from Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State; Kelechi Alfonne, 37 years old, from Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State; Lawrence Archibong, 34 years old, from Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State and Joseph Martins, 28 years old from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Items recovered from them, according to Mr Moshood, were 68 pieces of of APC ward congress result sheets, 130 APC ward delegate forms and 6 APC local government result sheets.

Moshood said the suspects were arrested in the early of yesterday in the hotel where they were lodging.

“During the course of interrogating them, they mentioned one Dr Mike Njoku who is the Zonal coordinator of Owerri Municipality to Senator Hope Uzodinma, who is a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, “Mr Moshood said.

He said:”The suspects were arrested in the early hours of today in a hotel called Faraji Hotel in Wuse 2 area of Abuja.”

According to the Force Headquarters image maker, “They were arrested for being in possession of ward congress materials that belong to Imo State.”

He spoke further:” You are aware that the Ward congress supposed to have been held in Imo State on the 5th of this month but it was shifted because of the fact that this group and their sponsors stole the election materials and hijacked the process to an unknown destination.

“The police have since commenced investigation into the unlawful and criminal act and this is the result that we are having today.

During the course of interrogating them, they mentioned one Dr Njoku who is the Zonal coordinator of Owerri Municipality to Senator Hope Uzodinma, who is a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“And I equally want to draw you a little bit back to let you know that Engineer Ipanesie Innocent is the SA in Electoral Matters to the same Senator Hope Uzodinma.”

He said the “Nigeria Police Force is fully determined and well prepared for the 2019 general election and our preparation is in three phases-the pre-election period, the elections proper and the post election period. And people should know that we won’t tolerate any act of lawlessness before the election, during the election and after elections. ”

” On this note the police wish to plead with the players to do what they are going to do in conformity with the Electoral Act. Nobody,no matter how highly placed, would be allowed to truncate the process.

“It is consequent upon this that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Commissioners of Police and their supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police across the country to ensure that the primaries that are going on in all the political parties are conducted devoid of any violence and equally ensure that any group or individuals that try to truncate the process are immediately apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the laid down law, “he added.

Segun Adewale wins ADP governorship ticket

The leading contender in the July 14th governorship election in Ekiti State, Otunba Segun Adewale widely known as OSAPraPra has clinched the governorship ticket of the Action Democratic Party (ADP)

Adewale who emerged as the flagbearer of the party in the primary conducted in line with the electoral act, laid down guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and that of the ADP which had adopted the option A4 was confident that this victory is a victory for the people of Ekiti because the process to make the state great has started.

The election was conducted by the state officials and observed by INEC officials, national officers of the party, including the National Organizing Secretary of the ADP,  Dr Lynn Olisa, National Youth Leader, National Publicity Secretary Otunba Fatoyinbo, National Chieftain, Chief Mrs. Nike Jones amongst others.

Adewale through his director of Media and Public Communications, Prince Adelaja Adeoye confirmed the news to journalists and said that a new and prosperous Ekiti is here, emphasizing on the party’s focus to create wealth for the people.

Adewale clinched the ADP ticket with 16,890 votes out of the total votes of 17,600 which is 96% of all the votes casted at various wards across the 16 local government in Ekiti state. He has been presented with the certificate by the party as the flagbearer ahead of July 14th election.

Adewale while addressing a press conference after the party primary said he was concerned about the sufferings of the people and this drives him to work harder in order to bring succour to the people.

In his address, he highlighted a 7 point agenda where he promises to focus on and this include but not limited to the following areas;

  1. Offset all outstanding payments owed by the state government. He has made a promise to the civil servants that he will clear all the outstanding salaries of workers and that of pensioners within his first 6 months.
  2. Fix power within the state to re-invent the business environment. He said Ekiti is not a business friendly state due to lack of electricity as clearly seen in some communities such as Gboyin, Ikogosi, etc that have been without power for the past four years.

Adewale has promised to fix the power as a matter of urgency giving a 3 months timeline to restore electricity to affected communities.  He also said that he will generate 10 megawatts in each of the 3 senatorial districts of the state.

  1. He has said that he will re-invite all the businesses that have left Ekiti due to high charges or political considerations and immediately restore their confidence in the state. This he said will start bringing back the jobs.
  2. He has said that he will make the state a medicare destination by building specialized hospitals that will cater for the health needs of Nigerians and generate revenue for the state including providing health care solutions for the people of Ekiti at subsidized rates.
  3. To bring back the factories to Ekiti and get the state running again in terms of investment and industry. He says that agriculture will be that raw material that powers this sector. In addition, he says that “Igbimo rice” will become a sensation all over Africa and the world.
  4. To create vocational centers that will be situated in the 3 senatorial districts where residents can acquire skills in the various fields of their choosing and then be supported by the government through soft loans for start up.
  5. Reposition the state’s educational sector to regain its rightful place as the number one state in intellectualism in Nigeria. He promises to make the education in the state productive and geared towards innovation for the people.

Adewale has charged Ekiti people to vote massively for his party, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at the polls to bring about a paradigm shift in the governing and running of the state.

Senate To Discuss Omo-Agege Suspension Next Week

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, has said that lawmakers would discuss about matters arising from the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on Tuesday.

Omo-Agege (APC-Delta Central) had vowed to resume plenary next week despite the Senate’s appeal to a High Court’s nullification of his suspension. Speaking to Punch, Abdullahi said he could not confirm if the senator could resume or not.

He said: “There is an appeal against the judgment, according to media reports. But I cannot be speaking for the Senate and reply on what was reported, I must get the facts from the relevant people within the institution.

“Now, I am not in Abuja. I’ve been asked and I said no, until we resume. When we resume on Tuesday, whatever facts are there, we are going to get the facts and we will be able to know what is happening.”

Killing: Pope Benedict Set To Visit Nigeria

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Nigeria due to the rising rate of killings in the country, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). It was gathered that the visit will be a sort of encouragement to Nigerians who have witnessed killings in many parts of the country.

Catholic Archbishop of Lagos Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, announced the invitation in an interview with the Vatican News (the mouthpiece of the Holy See). “Oh yes! We’re looking forward to seeing him. Yes, we did invite him and of course, as expected, he couldn’t give us a response then but we hopeful he would react to that,” the cleric added.

“If he does come, it will not only strengthen the people, it will also encourage the people to be able to cope with these different challenges.” Although, the Catholic spiritual head had not responded to the invitation to visit Nigeria, Most Rev. Martins says the Pope was about the killings in the country.

He said, “Well, of course, we also asked him what message he wanted us to take back home as a message to our people. “He said we should be courageous, particularly with regards to the recent troubles with the terrorists that masquerade as herdsmen.

“He told us to tell our people that he is with us in spirit and he is with us praying for us; that whatever it is that is possible in order to ameliorate the situation, he is willing to journey with us. We thought that was very good.”

Simi Is In Trouble For Stealing My Song Joromi - Victor Uwaifo

Veteran musician Victor Uwaifo has threatened to sue X3M singer, Simi, for using his franchise “Joromi” without his consent. In a recent interview, the veteran said Joromi is a franchise, hence, “Simi is in trouble” for using the same title.

Uwaifo who attended the Annual General Meeting of Copyright Society of Nigeria COSON which held at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos, maintained that copyrights infringement is a serious offence and should be taken seriously. He said, “Copyright is a very serious business and the contravention of copyright laws is more serious than you can imagine.

“Most people still believe that someone can just pick somebody’s work, which we call intellectual property right, and use it for their own benefit to the detriment of the composer, the man who actually created the work.

“You know it takes time to create a work; it takes a lot of research to be able to come out with a piece of work. You know one single track is equivalent to research journal and then a whole record is equivalent to a book publication, so people don’t understand it, they don’t know.

“You don’t just wake up in the university then you just put anything down and you call it a journal or a book. It takes a lot of research to be able to do one piece of music. The composition, the lyrics, the music, the score, the arrangement, the production and booking of the studio all cost money, and someone will just come and take the work and use it as his own or probably do an advert on it,” he added.

He said he has already filed a N500 million suit against Pepsi for using his song “Arabade” and would handle Simi at the right time.

When quizzed about taking any legal actions against Simi, he said: “One after the other. I cannot just take everybody to court at the same time. I don’t know whether he or she; I know she is but I know somebody is behind it. An LP was sent as a compliment; I’m still looking at it but they were planning to come to Benin to see me; up till now, they haven’t come, so I’m just putting that one on hold. ‘Joromi’ is a franchise; the name never existed before.

Benin don’t have “J” in their language; if any started with ‘J’ in Benin then it is fake. All consonant words start with vowel sounds. For example, if I use the trademark of one of these soft drinks, it is wrong. So Simi is in trouble,” hr buttressed.

Buhari Departs London For Abuja After Medical Trip

President Muhammadu Buhari has departed the United Kingdom for Nigeria, according to the UK chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari travelled to the British capital on Tuesday to meet with his doctors, according to his media aide Garba Shehu.

And on Friday, the UK chapter of the APC said in a tweet that the President left London after members of the party paid him a “farewell visit.”

“@APCUKingdom farewell visit to @NGRPresident @MBuhari before departure this afternoon,” the tweet read.

APC taking Nigerians for fools, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the ruling All Progressives Congress is taking Nigerians for fools while “revelling in an unrepentant misgoverning of Nigeria.”

This is coming as the promoter of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement also disclosed that the movement had adopted the African Democratic Congress as a political platform to actualise its dream for a new Nigeria.

Obasanjo said this on Thursday evening while briefing journalists at his presidential library home in Abeokuta.

While lashing out at the ruling party, the former President said most Nigerians today were poorer than when the APC came in adding that the country had been further impoverished with foreign loan jumping from $3.6bn to over $18bn.

He said, “The APC, as a political party, is still gloating and revelling in its unrepentant misgovernance of Nigeria and taking Nigerians for fools.

“There is neither remorse nor appreciation of what they are doing wrong. It is all arrant arrogance and insult upon injury for Nigerians.

“Whatever the leadership may personally claim, most Nigerians know that they are poorer today than when the APC came in and Nigeria is more impoverished with our foreign loan jumping from $3.6bn to over $18bn to be paid by the present and future generations of Nigerians.

“The country is more divided than ever before because the leadership is playing the ethnic and religious game which is very unfortunate.”

He added, “And the country is more insecure and unsafe for everybody. It is a political party with two classes of membership.”

Obasanjo, who might have quit the CNM, said since the movement adopted the African Democratic Congress, he had completed the first phase of his assignment.

In the speech he titled, ‘My treatise for future of democracy and development in Nigeria’, the former President said, “Let me start by welcoming and commending the emergence of a renewed and reinvigorated African Democratic Congress, as a political party.

“Since the inception of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement, many of the 68 registered political parties have contacted and consulted with the movement on coming together and working together.

“The leadership of the movement, after detailed examination, wide consultation and bearing in mind the orientation, policies and direction of the movement, had agreed to adopt ADC as its platform to work with others for bringing about desirable change in the Nigeria polity and governance.”

He, however, said the emergence of ADC was the beginning of hard work to continue to consolidate the nation’s democracy and ‘to make development in all its ramifications real, relevant, accessible, popular and reaching out to all Nigerians wherever they may be.”

While he thanked Nigerians who hearkened to his scathing open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, dated January 23, “which catalogued the incompetence, nepotism, a lack of performance, among others, of the administration,” he noted that their concerted efforts had made the adoption of ADC possible.

He said the ADC would accommodate youths, women and others and would sanitise the system.

Obasanjo said he would not advise anyone to join the Peoples Democratic Party or the APC, “no matter what window-dressing reformation they may claim.”

He said the PDP offered an apology without disciplining those who set Nigeria on a course of ruin and some of them are still holding leadership roles in the party.

He said, “Nigerians may forgive, but Nigerians should never forget; otherwise they will be suffering from amnesia and the same ugliness may raise its head again.”

Meanwhile, a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has described Nigeria as a killing field under the leadership of Buhari.

Oyinlola, who is the National Coordinator of the CNM, said this at the formal merger of the movement with the African Democratic Congress in Abuja on Thursday.

The press conference was held moments after Oyinlola resigned as the Chairman of the National Identity Management Commission.

The former governor said, “Now, the situation we have found ourselves calls for the need to invent another means of directing the political structure of the country. I am sure that you will admit that this is not the kind of change that we wanted when we voted in 2015 if you are to be sincere with yourself.

“We are not at war but everywhere you go, the country has been turned into a killing field. We cannot just sit down and fold our arms. If it means like-minded people will need to ensure that things are run properly, we will do that.”

He admitted that the talks between his group and the Nigerian Intervention Movement led by Dr Olisa Agbakoba and Dr. Abdujalil Tafawa-Balewa, had collapsed due to differences in strategy.

Oyinlola, however, said there was room for the NIM and other like-minded groups to join the ADC.

Speaking with one of our correspondents, the Co-Chairman of the NIM, Tafawa-Balewa, said, “We felt it was better to work with a coalition of parties to form an alliance instead of picking just one party.

“We just didn’t want to put all our eggs in one basket. We want others to know that they are all welcome in our house. The NIM is a much larger coalition than the CNM and that is well known. We are large because we are open-hearted and there is room for everybody.

“The CNM insisted on the ADC for reasons best known to them.”

The ADC was formed in 2006 and adopted a renowned political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, as its presidential candidate in 2007.

However, the APC in Osun State said the party had no ill feelings towards the former governor for leaving the ruling party.

The Director of Publicity and Strategy of the APC in Osun State/Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said, “There are no ill-feelings about his resignation. We believe he thought it very well before he took the decision and we wish him luck.

“He stated his reasons for resigning and we wish him well.”

The national leadership of the PDP also said that it would work together with the ADC and other opposition political parties to vote President Buhari out of office in 2019.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said, “We are all going to work together to remove President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. Whether the group joins ADC or another party, we all have one thing in common, and that is the sacking of the President.

“We will all work together to remove President Buhari. So, Nigerians and members of our party should not worry about what happened to the group.”

But the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, while welcoming news of the fusion of the CNM and the ADC, said Nigerians still believed in the party.

He said, “We are in a multi-party democracy and the coming together by political parties should not be considered a threat. In fact, the more the merrier, we do not see this as a threat at all.

“We are confident that Nigerians still believe in our party they are seeing the changes we are bringing on board. The Nigerian people will decide which party among the very many they will give their mandate to when the time comes.

Buhari’s Medical Trips ‘Expose Our Country To Ridicule’ – Falana

File photo: President Muhammadu Buhari

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana, on Thursday, criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for embarking on a medical trip to the United Kingdom.

Speaking during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily in Lagos, the human rights lawyer believes the President and other Nigerians who travel abroad for medical attention are ridiculing the nation.

He said, “These medical trips by the President and the rich in Nigeria expose our country to ridicule because you cannot justify that a little of enormous resources cannot fix a few hospitals to the extent that everybody can be treated in Nigeria.”

President Buhari had embarked on the trip on Tuesday and he is expected to return to the country on Saturday.

He is returning to the UK to meet with his doctor barely nine months after he returned from a medical vacation which lasted for more than 100 days on August 19, 2017.

Falana, however, recalled that he had approached a court some years ago with a view to restraining public officers from being allowed to go abroad for medical treatment at the expense of the nation.Human Rights Lawyer, Mr Femi Falana.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to attain the level where those seeking to be elected or appointed to public offices cannot go to other countries for medical treatment or send their children abroad for education.

The senior lawyer noted that unless the nation gets to such level, the people will continue to suffer as long as the hospitals and schools remain unfixed.

He alleged that the poor Nigerians keep dying because of their inability to get proper healthcare while go out of the country to treat themselves.

The activist added, “I can even go further to say it is discriminatory and illegal for anybody to use public funds to treat himself while the majority of people are dying in public hospitals that are not maintained.”

He, however, called on the Federal Government and those in public offices to ensure health and education, among other sectors, are given the needed attention.

BREAKING: Obasanjo’s coalition fuses into new party, ADC

The leadership of the political pressure group founded by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, the Coalition for Nigerian Movement (CNM), has confirmed its fusion into African Democratic Congress (ADC).

A Co-convener of CNM, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, made the pronouncement at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Oyinlola explained that with this development, CNM has ceased to exist, having formally collapsed into a political party.

“We have said it before and we are stating it here again that the current state of despair and despondency in our dear country is an ill wind.

“It is foreboding and can only lead to a conflagration. Between January when CNM was formed and now, can we say that the story of Nigeria has changed for the better? Have things not worsened at all levels? According to him,

“I thank all of you for being here today. You will all recall that in January this year, the Coalition for Nigeria Movement, CNM, was formed by some of us across the country as a political platform to create a new generation of leaders for our country.

“Between that time and today, a lot of grounds has been covered in achieving the set goals. One of such is what we are doing here today – the formal fusing of – our movement into the African Democratic Congress.

“Beyond what we are doing here today, we put our countrymen and women, old and young, on notice that they should expect more from us; that they should expect deepened political engagements across platforms in the coming days and weeks. In other words, this is just the first in a multi layered action plan to give back the country to its much deprived people.

“As we stated in January during the launch of the CNM, we are taking on this task not minding the inconveniences and other expected and unexpected consequences of our efforts at reinventing the country.

“We admit that structural inadequacies and failure of leadership have robbed our country of greatness. We also note that a future of greatness for Nigeria will only be birthed by a new generation of youthful leaders with fresh ideas and knowledge of what it takes to govern a 21 st century nation.

“This gathering here today is a proof that the modest efforts at waking up the vast majority of our people to for once, take their destiny in their hands as demanded by the constitution are bearing fruits already. Our constitution guarantees all Nigerians their fundamental human rights, including freedom of association and the right to hold political views.

“The decision to move in to African Democratic Congress therefore, is an appreciation of the progressive essence of the party and its untainted existence on the terrain of our nation’s politics.

“While I on behalf of the leadership and the over three million members of the CNM congratulate ADC as the vehicle for national reinvention, I urge us to let us know that the task ahead is an arduous one that needs further strengthening of the forces of change. What I am saying is that we should be open to new engagements and alliances being forged and crystallizing across the country,” he said.

Senate issues fresh summons to IG over spates of killings

The Senate on Thursday issued a fresh summons to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to appear before it.
This time , the IG is expected to explain what the Police are doing over the spates of killings in different parts of the country.
The Senate made this known in a statement signed by the Chairman , Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sabi Abdullahi , which was shared via their official Twitter handle.

Part of the statement reads , “The Senate said the crux of the matter that informed the invitation is the ceaseless spate of killings across the country and that matters concerning the arrest of Senator Melaye has in fact been overtaken by events.

“We noted the response issued by one Jimoh Moshood on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris following yesterday ’ s resolution of the legislative chamber on the continued refusal of the IGP to honour the invitation for him to come and explain what the police are doing to halt the spate of killings across the country.

“Let it be known that the IGP by trying to reduce the reason for his invitation by the Senate to the arrest of Sen . Dino Melaye is simply holding on to straw . The issue of Sen . Melaye’ s arrest has been overtaken by events.

“The courts are already handling the related cases . Our main concern is the security crisis across the country where people are being killed in scores on daily basis . The primary responsibility of the Police is maintenance of law and order as well as protection of lives and property.

“If there is a breach along the line of this responsibility , we do not see why the IGP should feel he cannot be invited to offer explanation to the arm of government which is constitutionally empowered to ask questions and investigate the breach . ”

Nigeria police has failed – Aisha faults IGP Idris

Aisha Yesufu, the co-convener of BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, advocacy group on Wednesday said the Nigeria police force has fallen.
The activist made the remark on Twitter while reacting to the statement by Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris over his decision to shun the Senate for the third time.

Idris, who refused to honour Senate’s invitation over several killings across the country, had said he owed the upper legislative chamber no apology for his decision.

Reacting, Aisha urged the police to focus on carrying out its primary duty of protecting the citizens and property, blaming the leadership of IGP Ibrahim Idris for the current incompetence in the force.

She wrote, “See how incompetently the Police has fallen with it’s bad leadership of the present IG.

“Go and do your primary duty of protecting lives and properties joor.”

Court Nullifies Omo-Agege’s Suspension By Senate

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege

The Federal High Court in Abuja has nullified the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege by the Senate for 90 legislative days.

The ruling judge, Nnamdi Dimgba on Thursday stated that the Senate is only empowered to suspend an earring member for 14 days and 1 legislative day.

Justice Dimgba, therefore, ordered the immediate reinstatement of Senator Omo Agege his salaries and other entitlements should be paid.

Senator Omo-Agege was on April 12, 2018, suspended during plenary over the remarks he made at a press conference that the amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act which changes the sequence of elections set by INEC is targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari.

Although he had previously apologised to the Senate over his comments about electoral act Amendment.

But the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges recommended in its report that Senator Omo-Agege be suspended for 181 legislative days but the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, recommended that it be reduced to 90 legislative days.

Presenting the report on the investigation into the comments made by Senator Omo- Agege, the chairman of the committee, Senator Sam Anyanwu said that the committee found it unacceptable that after Senator Omo-Agege apologised to the Senate over his comments, he made u-turn and took the Senate to court over the matter which was referred to the committee.

Senator Omo-Agege alongside nine others accused the National Assembly of deliberately adopting the conference report on the amendment which they allege had a pre-determined motive targeted at President Buhari.

Security men, lawmakers conspired to steal mace — Police

The Divisional Police Officer in the National Assembly, CSP Sulu-Gambari Abdul, on Wednesday blamed the April 18 invasion of the Senate and removal of the Mace by hoodlums on internal conspiracy.

Abdul stated this during an investigative hearing into the incident by joint ad hoc committee investigating the incident.

According to him, what happened at the National Assembly was an act of internal conspiracy among some security agencies and some lawmakers.

“There should be cooperation between security agencies and the lawmakers but in this case, the attack came from the roof as the senators are not helping security matters.

“On April 16, there was an earlier hint that a group planned to invade the National Assembly and disrupt activities, which called for a build-up of security with two units of mobile police mobilised to the complex.

“However, on April 18, at about 11 a.m., my attention was drawn to a group protesting at the gate, and while I moved to address the group, I was informed that some people were running away with the mace.

“I signalled all the entry points that nobody drives in or out but three men approached me identifying themselves as security operatives and requested to be allowed to go.

“The strain of blood on their clothes made me suspicious and I ordered their arrest.

“In all, six people were arrested same day and handed over to the Force Headquarters alongside charms recovered from them.

“In addition, an unmarked Prado jeep and a Toyota Hilux were impounded and they are with the police.

“It was later that I observed that the protest was a diversionary attention to move me out and that the protesters were same group with those that attacked,’’ Abdul said.

He said that there was no communication from the Sergeant-at-Arms to the National Assembly during the invasion by the thugs.

Earlier, the Sergeant-at-Arms, Mr Brighton Danwalex, had said that report from investigation after the incident revealed that Senator Ali Ndume instructed the men assigned to protect the mace not to touch it during the invasion.

According to him, it was wrong for them to take orders from Ndume.

“Security men are having challenges with some legislators because they don’t want to follow checks,’’ he added.

Danwalex said that security men were overpowered due to lack of non-functional security gadgets to enhance operational capacity.

“There is no functional walkie-talkie; we would have alerted all the exit points.

“The CCTV is not functioning and there is only one operational patrol vehicle and the entrance into the white house requires biometric doors,’’ he said.

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Bala N’allah, requested the Police to furnish it with copies of station diary where entry of the crime was made.

He also directed that the committee should be given copies of the crime routine diary, pictures of those arrested and the transfer register explaining where the invaders were transferred to.

On her part, the Co-Chairman of the committee, Rep. Betty Apiafi, blamed the invasion on negligence on the part of the Sergeant-at-Arms.

She accused them of failing to raise alarm having observed something unusual.

Similarly, Sen. Shehu Sani, accused the security operatives in the complex of regularly collecting money to allow unauthorised persons into the premises.

“People troop in here by paying money to security. Supposing they were terrorists and had it been that they came in to kill someone, they would have succeeded.

“How could five thugs succeed if there was no collusion? Sani said.

Senate moves to screen, approve CBN board

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, yesterday promised that the Senate will soon commence the screening and subsequent approval of board members of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Responding to request by Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central), that the Senate should partially lift a Senate ban on consideration of executive appointments, especially that of the CBN in the overall interest of the country and the economy, Saraki said, “We have taken note of your comments, we will look into it.”

Earlier, Senator Sani who came under Order 43 of the Senate Standing Order, 2015 as Amended said partial lifting was necessary to confirm the appointment of members of CBN because of the economy.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had in April 2017 requested the confirmation of the appointment of fine non-executive Directors of the Board of CBN.

The Senate, however, declined to confirm the appointment due to a unanimous decision the lawmakers took in 2016.

Police finally identify those who stole Senate mace

2019 presidency: Political parties form alliance for consensus candidate

Seventeen registered political parties in Nigeria have formed a new alliance with the aim of adopting one candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

The alliance, branded ‘G21’, was announced by the National Chairman of New Generation Party (NGP), Dr Yakubu Shendam at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

Shendam, who doubles as the coordinating national chairman of G21, also disclosed that the alliance was still open to admit new entrants into its fold, but cautioned that membership will not be allowed to exceed 21 political parties.

He said: “The only way for us to cease power from the current dispensation is to come together in alliance. Of course, if we don’t do that we can’t go anywhere. We cannot win the elections on our own by filing various presidential candidates.

“Most of our parties have structures all over the states. All we need to do now is to mobilise our members across to begin work in line with the objectives of the alliance.

“I reiterate that we are not merging like the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) prior to 2015 general elections, but form an alliance whose unity and purpose is limited to producing a consensus Presidential candidate in the 2019 elections.

“We are only interested in the presidential election. The House of Assembly and National Assembly elections and Governorship will be run in our individual parties,” he stated

Shendam added that the G21 is yet to identify who would be its flag bearer in the 2019 presidential election. “As we continue to hold our meetings across the country, we believe that we will be able to have and unveil our candidate to Nigerians.”

Others who also spoke at the press briefing said it was high time political parties changed the situation whereby they were formed but never won elections.

Alleged plot by some APC members to burn APC secretariat uncovered

The Oyo State Government has claimed that it has uncovered a plot by a group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the auspices of Unity Forum to burn down the state secretariat of the party.

The state claimed the move was part of their desperate bid to scuttle Saturday’s local government election and party congresses.

According to the state government, it received intelligence that members of the group had been holding clandestine meetings at different locations in Ibadan to perfect the plot by recruiting thugs to carry out this hatchet job.

A statement on Wednesday by the Executive Assistant, Political to the Governor, Morounkola Thomas, said that the group included some members of the House of Representatives, a minister, as well as former and serving political office holders

The statement alleged that the group has been meeting in the homes of two of their members in Bodija and Samonda areas ofIbadan, with a view to causing mayhem and panic among the good people of Oyo State.

The government, however, warned the group to be prepared to bear the consequences of their planned action having taken precautionary measures to scuttle their plans, while it urged law-abiding citizens to go about their businesses without fear.

“Oyo State is peaceful and will remain peaceful with the support of every law-abiding citizen. The governor has been a peace-loving leader and chief promoter of peace in the last seven years of his administration.

“He will, therefore, not fold his arms and allow any group or individual, irrespective of status, to take the state back to the dark era of political brigandage and violence.

“The protesting members of the House of Representatives and their leaders are all beneficiaries of Governor Ajimobi’s generosity and should be grateful to him, instead of biting the fingers that fed them.

“We are aware that they are looking for relevance and the only way they can get this is by linking Governor Ajimobi to the imaginary threat to their lives and well-being. Would anyone planning to injure you inform you before the act? They should have come up with a more believable tale.

“These are the governor’s political sons and I don’t know what will profit a father to kill his own son. The Almighty has been sufficiently good to him with every sense of modesty and he will not take issues further with them.

“All their tantrums are mere distractions and a plot to derail the governor from his focused cardinal objectives of transformation, reformation and repositioning agenda, which have indubitably transformed the face and fortunes of the state.

“It sounds unbelievable that the said Reps members and their ilk could claim that the same governor who single-handedly propelled them from political irrelevance to the limelight will now be plotting to take their lives.

“The ward congresses have come and gone. The congress committee and the so-called Unity Forum adjudged the congress to be free and fair. An appeal committee has been put in place and I will only advise those aggrieved with the outcome of the congress to explore the opportunity.

“The governor has turned his attention to the task for which he was elected for the second term by the good people of Oyo Stateand will not allow himself to be distracted by the noise of the marketplace. I will rather advise them to get busy with the business of lawmaking for which they were elected.

BREAKING: NIMC Chairman, Oyinlola resigns

Mr Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ex- Governor of Osun State, on Wednesday resigned as Chairman of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

He disclosed this in a letter he sent to President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday. A new and greater political engagement he said informed his choice of resignation.

“ I am moving on to chart a new course in my politics outside the ruling party and this thus, demands my dropping the NIMC chairmanship”, he said.

Below is his resignation letter

“Sir, I write to resign my appointment as the chairman of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with effect from today, May 9, 2018.

“Your Excellency, I must put on record my very deep sense of appreciation for the special privilege and consideration you gave me to serve our fatherland in that capacity. As I stated in my appreciation letter to you shortly after the appointment, the offer was a clear call to service.

“I gave the job the dedication it deserved and would have loved to continue but I regret to inform Your Excellency that I have a new, greater political engagement that will make that difficult and even impolitic.

“Sir, as one of my bosses in the army, I believe you would understand my stand given recent political developments. The training I got as a decorated officer and gentleman precluded me from engaging in any act that could amount to disloyalty and conflict of interest. I am moving on to chart a new course in my politics outside the ruling party and this thus, demands my dropping the NIMC chairmanship.

“I thank you, sir, once again for the great honour and confidence reposed in me. However, there is time to take a job and another time to leave it and move on. For me, the time to work on something else in the interest and service of our people is now.

“I wish Your Excellency good-luck while praying that you will finish well and strong in the service of our country.
