Any policeman checking vehicle particulars on highways is on illegal duty–AIG

Mr Dan Bature, an Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police in Charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, says any policeman checking vehicle particulars on the highways is on illegal duty.

Bature said this on Wednesday in Ibadan during a two-day familiarization visit to Oyo State.

He said that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars but to ensure safer roads.

Bature warned policemen against blocking highways, saying police patrol vehicles were not supposed to be toll gates.

He said the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) was committed to changing the negative image of the police and supporting the anticorruption war of the Federal Government.

Bature advised officers unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to resign from the force.

He said that a lot was expected by the public from the police, adding that this informed the monitoring of officers.

“The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary.

“But this can only be achieved when the people have good perception about the police, “Bature said.

Earlier, Sam Adegbuyi, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, said that the officers were dedicated and patriotic.

Adegbuyi said that in view of the population of Oyo State, the command needed to create three more Area Commands in addition to the existing four commands.

He commended the AIG, Oyo government and the Police Community Relation Committee for the successes recorded so far in the fight against crime.

EFCC North-West office recovers N54.7bn in 10 months

The North-West zone of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N54,535,651,183.74 and another $622,200.00 (N190.1m) within the last 10 months.

Briefing newsmen in Kano, on Tuesday, the Zonal Head of Operations (North-West Operations), Mr. Nnaghe Itam, disclosed that the zone, within the period under review, had 214 cases, while 34 were currently undergoing prosecutions.
He pointed out that the anti-corruption agency secured 23 convictions during the period.

The EFCC zone, comprising Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi states, according to Itam, also recovered some properties, which included eight houses, nine plots of land, three trucks and a car.

He said all the funds and properties were recovered from fraudsters and politically exposed persons, adding that the funds belonged to the Federal Government, corporations and individuals.

Itam said the recovery followed a directive from the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, who directed the zone to look into some complaints over the distribution and diversion of petroleum products during the last fuel crisis in the country.

He said that the zone’s investigation into the complaints yielded a refund of N54,393,106,143.00 to the Federal Government by some marketers.

The zonal head of the EFCC disclosed that some marketers collected petroleum products, sold them but refused to remit money to the government’s coffers.

Itam said, “I will also like to draw your attention to our proactive enlightenment campaigns within the zone in a bid to highlight what we can do to reduce corruption by not joining the corruption chain.

“It is important also to note that government is still the most active driver of the Nigerian economy. Our efforts are largely concentrated in tackling fraud relating to tax revenues within the business community in Kano.

“We have recovered millions of naira for the Federal Inland Revenue Service and are working to ensure that value is derived by government through an appropriate collection of taxes, rates and royalties.’’

Emirates Airline To Reduce African Flights Due To Economic Crisis

Emirates Airline says it could reduce the frequency of its flights to African cities or cut routes completely if current economic and financial challenges on the continent continued.

The President of the airline, Tim Clark, announced this to reporters on the sidelines of an International Air Transport Association event in Dubai on Tuesday.

Clark said foreign airlines flying to Africa now refuel abroad because jet fuel supplies had become more expensive and scarce in some African countries.

“In certain African countries, the currencies have really gone down, so we’re reflecting on a number of these to look at where it’s just not worth us to travel”, Clark said.

He added that Emirates’ load factor – a measure of capacity utitlisation – for the rest of 2016 and 2017, would probably be in the mid-70s to low-80s in percentage terms.

Clark, however, said there would be some peaks and troughs in that time.

Emirates has started a detour to Accra, Ghana to refuel its daily Abuja-bound flight, a spokesman said last month; the airline had already cut its twice-daily flights to Lagos and Abuja to just one.
