Missing’ $20bn: Anti Corruption Network Plan Mega Rally In Abuja.

A civil rights group, Anti Corruption Network, ACN, on Friday, disclosed that 96 civil society organisations will participate in a protest against the alleged missing $20 billion belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

According to ACN, the groups are set for the rally and would not be intimidated by the security agencies.

Its Executive Secretary and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye, who stated this at a news briefing in Abuja, asked the Federal Government to make public the name of the auditing firm engaged to conduct the forensic audit of the accounts of NNPC.

Melaye posited that releasing the name would enable the citizens check whether or not “it is a reputable firm with capacity to creditably perform the task”.

He called on the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to step down for a transparent exercise to be conducted.

The former lawmaker also demanded that the NNPC Group Managing Director, Andrew Yakubu, should ousted like the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

“President Goodluck Jonathan, when you see a snake, kill it. You don’t need to set up a committee to find out if it is a lizard; just kill it. Never shall we keep quiet over issues that will determine the future of our children.

“This is about systematic corruption in our national treasury. We will prove that power truly belongs to the people, time for change is now”, Melaye said.

He reminded police authorities that relevant court judgments had already ruled out securing of a police permit before any peaceful protest could be held.

Melaye further faulted the claim by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, that she was not aware of subsidy deductions, adding that the ACN believes that the NNPC and its subsidiaries were “colossus of corruption”.

The Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment examinations took off in various centres around the country today. Due to the state of emergency declared in 3 states of the country, Borno applicants were required to take their exams in Gombe, Yobe applicants in Bauchi and Adamawa candidates will write their exams in Taraba.

We are yet to get any confirmation from the Immigration high command and relevant security agencies on the news of casualties at the Abuja exam centre. We will bring you more details as soon as we get them.

FG Deploys Security Forces To Benue As Herdsmen Kill 22 In FreshAttacks.

The federal government  has sent a combined contingent of soldiers and policemen  to Benue State to stop rampaging Fulani herdsmen who have been on a killing spree in the state in the last few days.

Court Of Appeal Discharges And Acquits Hon Herman Hemba Of Corruption.

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Friday freed a former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market, Mr. Herman Hembe, saying he had no case to answer in corruption charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC had accused Hembe of converting  an estimated N600,000 given to him by the Securities and Exchange Commission to travel to the Dominican Republic, for a conference in October 2011.

In a unanimous decision, a panel of justices of the Court of Appeal held that Hembe did not commit any offence to warrant him facing trial.

N4.7bn fraud: Outage stalls hearing of Babalakin's application

Power outage on Friday stalled the hearing of an application by the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Ltd., Wale Babalakin, at an Ikeja High Court charged with a N4.7 billion fraud.
Babalakin, in the application filed before Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo, had asked the court to dismiss the N4.7 billion fraud charge preferred against him and four others.
The application could not be heard as scheduled because of power outage.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that courts in the Ikeja Division had been relying solely on two generators to provide power.
