'If Aisha Buhari was my wife, she is packing her things back to her father's house' - Owie

Ex-Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie said that wife of the President, Aisha Buhari was right to have said that if her husband continues the way he was going with regards to appointment, she will not go and campaign for him in 2019, but the medium she used in making her points known was wrong.

According to Senator Owie, as the President’s wife, she would have said same to the President at home, even if it means during bedtime, adding that if his wife does a similar thing like the President’s wife, he would have sent the woman packing to her father’s house.

Senator Owie said, “Aisha is right in criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments, but the medium she adopted is very wrong. Such advice from a wife to a husband should be given at Bed time and not to the hearing of anybody.

“If a wife does that to me, the woman will return to her parent’s house within 24 hours of that statement. A Benin Parable says- Only one’s enemy that will advise one in the presence of The Oba in council.”

Nigeria will get out of recession in 2018 - Expert

A Lagos-based financial expert, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, on Friday expressed optimism that Nigeria would get out of recession by 2018 with the right economic policies.
Rewane, also the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Ltd., said this at the 2016 Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria Triennial Delegates Conference/Gala Night in Lagos.

The financial expert said that the Federal Government must embrace the best economic policies urgently to addressing the recession.

He said “It will take a minimum of 18 months for Nigeria to get out of recession, and signs of recovery will start showing in 2017 with the best policies.

“Nigeria will start showing symptoms of wellness in 2017 and by 2018, Nigeria will be well again.”

He said that there is sense of urgency, honesty and desperation in addressing the country’s economic challenges.

He said, “If we fail this time as a country, everybody fails.”

He said that government must raise funds from multinational agencies, reduce interest rate and debt servicing to achieve the desired growth.

Rewane called for an expansion in credit supply and reduction of the cash reserve requirement for banks to lend to the real sector.

The financial expert insisted that redundant assets could be concessioned to bring the country out of recession.

Rewane said that public schools, hospitals and public hospitals needed to be more efficient and effective to reduce pressure on foreign exchange.

Rewane attributed the nation’s economic challenges to “policy misalignment,” external imbalances and internal imbalances that led to low productivity.

Former Group Managing Director, Ecobank Transnational, Mr. Arnold Ekpe, in a keynote address, said that government needed to reflate the economy through infrastructure development to create economic activities.

Ekpe said that effective power sector was paramount for the growth and development of other sectors of the economy.

He said, “A lot of countries had moved ahead of Nigeria. South Africa now is number one in Africa. We should try and regain our position, we have the people, we have oil and other things. We need to take an action now.”

Ekpe said that government and regulators should work together to deepen the nation’s bourse.

Mr. Ikechukwu Kelikume of the Lagos Business School, said that there must be a balance in monetary and fiscal policy for the country to move forward.

Kelikume said that government must promote the non-oil export sector to increase the country’s export revenue.

He also called for tax rebate and tax holiday for local industries to encourage local manufacturers.

Former Managing Director, defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr Erastus Akingbola, said that government needed to change the current foreign exchange policy to encourage people with dollars to bring them into the country.

Akingbola said that stringent policies should be curtailed in order to bring the country out of recession.

He said that government must encourage entrepreneurs and exporters because they were the only ones that would create the needed jobs.

Akingbola also called for reduction in the cost of governance, noting that Nigerian political system was very expensive.

The theme of the conference was “Financial turbulence & regulatory framework in a recession economy.”

Embattled Reps members to sue US Govt for $1 Billion damages over alleged sex scandal

The three members of the House of Representatives exonerated of the sexual misconduct allegations levelled against them by the United States Government are set to file a $1bn suit against the latter and its agents.
They are House Deputy Chairman, Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Mr. Terse Mark-Gbillah (Benue); Mr. Samuel Ikon (Akwa Ibom); and Mr. Mohammed Garba-Gololo (Bauchi).

A former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Entwistle, had accused the three lawmakers of committing the alleged misconduct during a visit to his country last April for a leadership training programme, prompting the Nigerian legislature to call for an investigation.

The House had exonerated the lawmakers on Tuesday after a report by its Joint Committees on Ethics/Privileges and Foreign Relations found no wrongdoing on their part.
It will be recalled that the narrative changed in favour of Mark-Gbillah, Garba-Gololo and Ikon after the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, appeared before the committees on July 21 to testify that the US did not produce any concrete evidence to prove the allegations.

Entwistle failed to appear before the committees, while a female maid, who alleged that Garba-Gololo “grabbed” her, also declined to testify.

Speaking with newsmen on the outcome of the investigation, Mark-Gbillah disclosed that the three lawmakers would immediately institute a legal action against their accusers in the US.

Mark-Gbillah, who spoke for the three lawmakers, stated that the US Government, Entwistle, the Marriot Hotel, the US Embassy and their agents would be sued for damages.

This will be in addition to demanding what he called “internationally-published apology.”

He expressed regrets that they would be unable to visit the US physically to file the suit because their visas, which were withdrawn in the wake of the “false allegations”, had not been restored.

Mark-Gbillah gave details of the steps the members would take, saying, “We won’t let the matter go like that because our reputation has been defamed internationally and there is also the cancellation of our visas to consider, a decision that has still not been reversed.

“In the American archives, the records have not been set straight. As a matter of fact, this has already affected the members of one of our families.

“We will be seeking legal redress in the US; we are going to take the hotel to court, the Marriot Hotel, the parent brand, the place we stayed (in the US). We are going to take the (former US) ambassador himself and the US State Department, who are his employers to court. We are going to be taking the local organisers of the programme to court as well.

“We will be seeking among other things, an internationally-published apology to us as individuals, to the National Assembly and to Nigeria by the US Government.

“We are going to be seeking damages from all concerned parties and right now, we are looking at suing in the region of $1bn.

“Already, contacts have been made with various law firms in the US. We want to use a very reputable law firm.

“You can now see that the revocation of our visas is now hindering our ability to visit the US physically to do the ground work. We are liaising with our lawyers via email messages and telephone calls.

“The lawyers will still advise us on whether to ask for damages of up to $10bn because the damage they did to us can’t be quantified in financial terms.”

Ikon confirmed that Mark-Gbillah spoke for the group.

“Mark-Gbillah is our spokesperson. Whatever he has said is what we are going to do.

“For me, there is no comment again,” he added.

The House committees made three recommendations to the session, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yussuff Lasun.

It read, “That Hon. Mohammed Garba Gololo, Hon. Mark Terseer Gbillah and Hon. Samuel Ikon are cleared of and exonerated from the allegations levelled against them by the United States Ambassador to Nigeria in his June 9, 2016 letter to the Rt. Hon. Speaker, for want of evidence;

“That in the light of the foregoing, the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs do engage with (sic) the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, with a view to finding a seamless resolution of the domestic fallout of this unfortunate incident as it relates to Hon. Mohammed Garba Gololo, Hon. Mark Terseer Gbillah and Hon. Samuel Ikon;

“That the Ministry of Foreign Affairs do write (sic) to remind the United States Embassy of the need to always adopt the official channel of communications in its dealings with any organ or institution of government.”

The House adopted all three recommendations soon after the Lead Chairman, Mr. Nicholas Ossai, briefed members on the findings of the investigation.

He stated, “The committee was not availed of any concrete evidence outside the confidential letter the ambassador wrote the speaker.

“There was no video, audio or any form of evidence presented before the committee to justify the allegations.”

While testifying on July 21, Onyeama had told the committee how he encountered Entwistle over the allegations, but could not get “concrete evidence.”

He explained how the former US Ambassador also apologised for not using the official diplomatic channel to route his letter to the Speaker (Mr. Yakubu Dogara) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

NNPC begins oil exploration in Bauchi

The Nigerian National Corporation and a Chinese company, Bureau for Geophysical Corporation, have begun mobilising to Alkakeri, Darazo, Misau in Bauchi State to commence the drilling of oil wells in the coming months.
The exploration is expected to bring employment and other economic opportunities to the state.

The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, disclosed this when he led top management staff on a courtesy visit to the Bauchi State Governor.

He said, “NNPC’s renewed commitment for further exploration in the Gongola Basin is informed by directives to NNPC by President Muhammdu Buhari to resume oil exploration activities in Gongola and Chad Basins following successful commercial discoveries of oil and gas in neighbouring Niger, Chad and Central African Republic in their portion of the Chad Basin.”

The NNPC boss recalled that exploration activities in the Chad Basin began in 1974, continued in 1996 to 2000 when gas was discovered in non-commercial quantity, but later resumed in 2014, but stopped due to insecurity in the North-East.

“Based on a recent survey by a subsidiary of NNPC, the Integrated Data Service Limited, and with the acquisition of state of the art technology in present data acquisition, we are confident that these efforts will lead to clearer definition if prospectivity in the region,” he stated.

Responding, the Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, promised that the state government would provide security for the NNPC and other companies’ staffers that would be in the state for oil exploration.

He said that the state government would also provide office and residential accommodation during the exploration exercise, and enlighten Bauchi citizens on the explorers’ equipment and vehicular movement, so as not to create panic.
