States Ratify Oil Subsidy Removal.

The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in Abuja on Tuesday took a decision to remove petroleum subsidy in the country. The Chairman of Finance Commissioners Forum, Mr. Timothy Odah, said this when he briefed journalists on the outcome of the FAAC meeting for the month of March in Abuja.Odah said at their last meeting, a committee consisting of six Accountants-General of states and six state Commissioners for Finance was set up to conduct investigations and present a report on the impact of the subsidy in the country so far.“FAAC in its plenary session finally took a decision that petroleum subsidy should be entirely removed.“Because from what was discovered, the subsidy is more or less a solution worse than the problem it is meant to solve.“Therefore, we are of the firm decision that it will be better for states to access their funds and grant subsidy in their respective capacity.“Our position will be submitted to the Presidency,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the commissioner as saying to journalists.Odah cautioned organised labour to be careful in its refusal to rally for the removal of the oil subsidy programme. He alleged that most of them were against the removal because they were on the payroll of oil marketers in the country. The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Jonah Otunla, said N641.4 billion was shared among the Federal Government, states and local governments as revenue for the month of March.“The distributable statutory revenue for the month is N534.91billion, which is more than the N531.33 billion that was shared in February.“Also distributed is the sum of N7.62 billion refunded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to be shared to states and local governments.“In addition, the sum of N35.55 billion is proposed for distribution under the SURE-P programme.“So, the total revenue distributable for the current month, including Value Added Tax (VAT) of N63.31 billion is N641.38 billion,’’ he said.

Hon Speaker,Aminu Tambuwal's Convoy In Auto Crash, Kills 2 Persons In Kaduna.

An auto crash involving the convoy of the Speaker of the House of Representative, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Monday killed two persons, leaving several others injured along the ever busy Ali Akilu way in Kaduna.

The auto crash occurred at about 10.45am when the Speaker’s convoy that was leaving Deluxe Suites entered the busy road without any warning, forcing an oncoming commercial bus with Kano number XA 863 FGE to break abruptly, leaving to multiple collusion.

Also, a Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 657 PAK that also tried to avoid the collusion ran into a cement wall, killing two passengers, a lady and a man sitting in the front seat, while the driver and other passengers sustained injuries.

Even though it could not be confirmed whether the Speaker was in the convoy or not, the team did not stop to assess the accident but sped off and their action did not go down well with eyewitnesses.

They, however, used their vehicles and other objects to barricade the busy road, creating heavy traffic congestion for about two hours and forced road users to seek alternative routes.

A joint team of military and police personnel under the command of Col. Adebayo Fawole was later drafted to the scene to disperse the crowd and ensure normalcy. A towing van was later brought to remove the damaged vehicles from the scene while the dead and injured were moved to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital.

The Spokesman to the Speaker, Imam Dalhatu Imam, however denied that the Speaker’s convoy was involved in the accident, adding that the advance party may have been the ones responsible for the crash.

Iman said the office of the Speaker was waiting for the details of the accident.

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state, Alhassan Haruna, confirmed the accident, saying that immediately he got the news of the crash, he dispatched the chairman of Kawo Motor Park and Central Market Motor Park to the scene.
