Sowore’s movement slams FG for not signing Africa free trade deal

The Take Back Nigeria Movement has condemned the President Muhammadu Buhari led-Federal Government for mismanaging Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement.

The movement, promoted by Omoyele Sowore, in a release on Thursday, said it was disappointing that Nigeria was absent when African nations gathered to sign the ACFTA on March 21.

It said Nigeria which is Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy should have taken a key role in shaping the negotiations because it would have been beneficial to the country’s economic and security interests.

The movement said, “Instead of providing leadership, the Muhammadu Buhari government has exported its shambolic approach to governance at home to the continental stage.

“Just days after the Federal Executive Council approved Nigeria’s participation in the agreement; the Buhari government announced it would no longer be participating because some key stakeholders were not consulted.”

The movement lamented that it is unconscionable that it is at this late stage in the process that the Buhari government is realising that it ought to have engaged with stakeholders.

It stated that the movement believes that the economy of a nation as large as Nigeria, and decisions that impact the lives of almost 200 million people should not be taken lightly or on the whims of one man.

The movement assured Nigerians that it will move swiftly to make sure that the country’s leadership on the global stage continues as well as join a continental free trade agreement that would affirm the following principles; promotes the economic well being of Nigeria’s people, prevents the dumping of goods into Nigeria, ensures a rapid and sustainable growth of the Nigerian economy, assures reciprocity in access to markets among others.

The movement also assured Nigerians from all walks of life that they would be carried along in its deliberation. It said the opinion on Nigerians will not be considered at the dying minute as it has become the norm in Buhari’s administration.

Martin Luther King award: Fayose digs up Buhari’s ‘lies’

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding a ‘fake’ Martin Luther King award President Muhammadu Buhari received some days back.
Fayose, writing on his verified Twitter page, claimed that it is not the first time Buhari has deceived Nigerians.

The Governor alleged that the interview the President had with Kemi Fadojutimi in UK, was staged at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja.

“Why using the name of Martin Luther King to lie? But I’m not surprised. Nigerians should remember how they lied that Buhari had an interview with the CEO,All Eyes on Africa TV Show, Kemi Fadojutimi in UK on Feb 20, 2015, whereas, the interview was held in Transcorp Hotel, Abuja,” Fayose tweeted.

The award Buhari received, came after a speech by the purported King family, urging Nigerians to re-elect him as president.

According to the presidency at the time, “President @MBuhari today at the State House received Martin Luther King Jnr’s family. He was also conferred with the 1st Black History Month National Black Excellence and Exceptional African Leadership Award 2018. #AsoVillaToday”

The children of Martin Luther King and the King Center then denied issuing the accolade to Buhari.

In a tweet on Wednesday, The King Center said: “The award given to President Buhari of Nigeria was not given by The King Center, at the request of The King Center or by the children of #MLK and #CorettaScottKing. @MrFixNigeria”

Aisha Buhari condemns foreign medical treatment

Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s first lady, has condemned the practice of spending the nation’s resources abroad via medical tourism.
She said she does not believe in Nigerians travelling abroad to receive treatment because “we have all it takes” for world-class medical services.

Aisha said this on Wednesday when she inaugurated Cedarcrest Hospital — where Yusuf, her son, was once treated — in Abuja.

“I believe in making Nigeria a better place to be,” she said, adding: “I don’t believe in spending our resources abroad. We have all it takes to have a hospital like this, from manpower to personnel.”

Aisha said her son “almost lost his life” but the hospital saved him.

“Even after he was flown abroad for further medical attention, they (hospitals and surgeons abroad) did not do anything for him,” she added.

“They asked where the accident happened, where the surgery took place, I said Nigeria, they said excellent.”

In 2017, her husband spent a total of 152 days in a London hospital treating and undisclosed ailment.

He travelled on two different occasions.

Similarly, Yusu was treated abroad after he suffered injuries from a bike accident in Abuja.

He was first treated in Cedarcrest hospital but was later flown abroad for further treatment.

Aisha, who announced his return to the country after the medical trip, did not reveal the country he was treated in.

The first lady has made controversial comments in recent times, forcing commentators to conclude she is aiming her dig at her husband.

Lagos lockdown for Buhari: What Lai Mohammed said about Jonathan’s visit in 2013

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had as spokesman of then opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) warned then president Goodluck Jonathan against blocking roads whenever he is coming to Lagos state.
Mohammed was on the entourage President Muhammadu Buhari to Lagos, a visit that virtually shut down the state.

But Mohammed, in a statement in 2013, lamented that Jonathan’s visit to Lagos usually creates heavy traffic gridlock and grounds movement.

He suggested that the President takes a chopper from the Muritala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja to Eko Hotel & Suites on Victoria Island, where he is billed to attend a centenary event.

The other request is for the President to postpone his visit in order not to create a traffic chaos. The ACN has scheduled its National Convention to hold at Onikan Stadium, one of the presidential routes leading to Victoria Island.

Mohammed said at the time: “We have been compelled to write a letter to the Lagos State governor asking him to please prevail on the President to reschedule his visit.

“But if his visit must go on, he should use another means of transportation such as the helicopter so that the whole town is not locked up.

“Anytime Mr President is coming to Lagos, our roads are closed, and traffic congestion is at its highest. The whole city is shut down for the entire day.

“You can imagine when we’re expecting about 10,000 people from different parts of Nigeria to our convention, all heading for the same place. It’s going to be chaos.

“So, we’re appealing to Mr President, through the Governor, to please reconsider his visit.

“And if he must come, he should inflict the minimum pain and hardship on Nigerians.”

Reacting, then presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati accused the ACN of crying wolf where there was none.

He said the President would only be transiting through Lagos, en route Ogun State.

Abati said the presidential visit would not in any way disrupt the ACN convention, wondering what informed the party’s letter to the governor.

He alleged that the opposition spokesman was trying to re-order the itinerary of the President.

Abati said in a statement: “We find it hard to believe that any patriotic and right-thinking Nigerian would have written the kind of publicly circulated letter reportedly sent to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola by the National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in which he attempts to dictate President Jonathan’s itinerary, mode of transportation within Lagos, and motive, and even suggests that the President’s visit could have been designed to frustrate a planned Action Congress of Nigeria convention and merger with some other political parties.

“The allegation is not only baseless, but another in the series of ‘wolf crying’ that has become the sole strategy and pre-occupation of the ACN. It is clearly a deliberate, further attempt to undermine, ridicule and debase the office of the President of the Federal Republic.

“A courteous and simple discussion of the phantom potential conflict of programmes with appropriate officials of the Presidency would have sufficed to inform the ACN and its officials that President Jonathan is only transiting through Lagos tomorrow on his way to the commissioning of the WEMPCO Cold Roll Steel Plant in Ibafo, Ogun State.

“In point of fact, President Jonathan’s visit tomorrow which was scheduled long before the ACN convention will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the convention as he will only touchdown at the airport, transit to Ibafo (miles away from the ACN convention venue) by chopper and return to the airport the same way for his flight back to Abuja.

“It is certain that Governor Fashola was already aware of President Jonathan’s itinerary in Lagos tomorrow since in keeping with protocol, the Presidency always briefs state governments well ahead of time on all Presidential movements to their states.

“Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s letter was therefore pointless and serves no purpose other than distasteful muck-raking.

“The paranoia displayed by the ACN in its plea to Governor Fashola concerning an imaginary plan to scuttle a political merger is beneath the politics of inclusiveness this administration has encouraged in its interaction with the state, as with all other states of the Federal Republic.

“President Jonathan is President of the whole of Nigeria. It is strange and intolerable that any political party would as much as suggest that the President is not welcome in any state, city or local council in any part of the country at any time or date.”

Tinubu refers to Obasanjo as ‘bad belle’ letter writer

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday took a subtle swipe at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, over his letter criticizing the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Speaking during the colloquium in honour of his 66th birthday in Lagos, Tinubu insinuated the letter from Obasanjo to Buhari is “bad belle” letter.

According to the former Lagos governor, “Somebody who’s writing a letter these days, a letter of politics. As if they’ve never been there before. Bad belle letters, don’t worry. I don’t want to address that today.”

Recall that Obasanjo had, in a special press statement entitled, “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement”, came hard on the Buhari’s administration.

Obasanjo had faulted Buhari for been nepotic in his dealings as the nation’s president and dividing the country.

The former president, in the letter, advised Buhari against seeking re-election in 2019 because he lacks what it takes to move the country forward.

Stop playing God, you admitted Buhari, APC have failed – PDP fires back at Tinubu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday faulted remark by a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, asking Nigerians not to accept its recent apology.
Speaking during the colloquium in honour of his 66th birthday in Lagos, Tinubu cautioned Nigerians against accepting PDP’s apology.

In a swift reaction, PDP asked Tinubu to “stop playing god as Nigerians have the faculty and freedom to determine the leadership that best suit their desires without any body’s control.”

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kola Olagbondiyan, PDP advised Tinubu not to allow himself to be used a second time as he “still bears a gross part of the blame for the enthronement of this incompetent, divisive, nepotic and inherently corrupt administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which has brought the nation to its knees in three years.”

Ologbondiyan stressed that Tinubu indirectly admitted the “failure of President Buhari and the APC administration.”

The party said without listening to the prompting of any politician, Nigerians across board had taken the liberty to accept PDP’s apology which was made “patriotically in the overall interest of national healing, reconciliation, unity and cohesion.”

The statement reads, “The PDP watched with amusement as Asiwaju Tinubu struggled with words to appease President Buhari and give him assurances that he can win a second term election in the face of mass failure both in governance and in their discredited, rejected and troubled platform.

“It was a direct admittance of failure and indictment on President Buhari’s administration, when Asiwaju pointedly told the President that the ship of the nation, under his (Buhari’s) watch, still needs to be rescued, almost three years down the line.

“It is tragic that Asiwaju had to tutor his visitor, who had no policy direction since his election in 2015, by engaging in a revision of the programmes and policies of the PDP, such as the leasing system, the mortgage and pension schemes which boosted the economy and directly impacted on the lives of Nigerians.

“More pathetic is the fact that the APC leader presented the PDP programmes as if he was introducing novel ideas in the economy. This clearly stood with our position that the APC government is incompetent and lacking in ideas of how to move the nation forward.

“While we congratulate the Lagos Governor Emeritus on his birthday, the PDP considers it needful, to forewarn him to study the current ambience of Nigerian politics as it relates to the failures of the Buhari Presidency and the fact that the citizens have since rejected this Presidency and the APC, so that Asiwaju will not find himself swimming against the tide.”

Full Text Of Buhari’s Easter Message To Nigerians

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday join Christians across Nigeria to commemorate this year’s Easter celebration. In a statement released on Thursday, Buhari appreciated God for the opportunity to celebrate another Easter despite current challenges facing the country.

The President stated that Easter is the season in which Christians mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which represents the triumph of good over evil and life over death. Buhari said: “The Holy Scripture affirms that happiness and fulfilment in life do not flow from acquiring the best things in life, but in being richer in a relationship with God and fellow human beings.

“Let us use the opportunity of this special season to deeply reflect on how every one of us can imbibe the profound teachings of Jesus Christ with renewed vigour.

“In so doing and by placing the joy, comfort and happiness of others above ours, we will make a statement that vices such as, hate speech, bigotry, corruption, banditry and terrorism have no place in our nation. We must do all it takes to love our neighbours and display increased spirit of tolerance and accommodation.

“I commend those who recognise and support our unwavering efforts to prevent the spread of conflicts in our communities; check wanton criminality and the taking of innocent lives; unite the country; and steer the ship of state to a steady path of economic growth, job creation and development.

“While we enjoin law-abiding fellow compatriots to work for peace and social justice in our beloved country, let there be no doubt of our resolve to firmly resist others who may want to make cheap political capital out of current national security challenges.

“Our programmes and policies in the last three years have resulted in bringing down the prices of staple crops; gradual improvement of road, rail and electricity infrastructure; and making Nigeria the preferred destination for investors. More than ever before, we are ready to consolidate on these gains and ensure that we improve the lot of our communities in the years ahead.

“Thankfully, our Dapchi schoolgirls who were safely released recently after 30 agonizing days in the hands of their abductors, have been reunited with their families. I am very optimistic that all others, including the Chibok girls who are still in captivity will be safely released unconditionally to their families. I urge you to continue to pray for their safe return.

“In the meantime, I have given clear instructions to our security agencies to prioritise safety in schools in areas where the humanitarian and security situation are still dire, in addition to ensuring adequate protection of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

“As we approach the period of campaigns, I appeal to our political actors and other stakeholders to resist any act that could mar the integrity of our electoral process.

“I am optimistic that with God on our side, the dark days of Nigeria’s elections being manipulated by violence and rigging by corrupt politicians and their agents are over. They are confined to the dustbin of history where they rightly belong. I remain committed to bequeathing a legacy of supremacy of the people’s will through the ballot box.

“May this year’s Easter celebration bring us renewed hope and confidence as a great nation.”

Senate Turn Down Buhari’s Request For USD350m World Bank Loan For Kaduna State.

The Political quagmire between governor Nasir El- Rufai of Kaduna state and the three Senators representing the Senatorial districts of the state, took another dimension Thursday as the Senate rejected Kaduna State Development Policy Operation (DPO) in the sum of USD350 million as contained in the 2016 – 2018 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari and El-Rufai The three Senators, Shehu Sani, APC, Kaduna Central; Suleiman Hunkuyi, APC, Kaduna North and La’ah Danjuma, PDP, Kaduna South said that it became imperative for the credit facility to be rejected because critical stakeholders from the State were never consulted and for the fact that the State was already heavily indebted. The rejection followed the presentation of the Report of Committee on Local and Foreign Debts Kaduna State Development Policy Operation (DPO) Credit Facility of USD 350 by its Chairman, Senator Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central).

According to Senator Sani, the Committee recommended that “the Senate do reject the request of USD350 million for Kaduna State as contained in the 2015 2018 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan of Mr. President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. “That with the high total debt stock of Kaduna State at the moment, the new borrowing sought, will make the debt service to revenue ratio high, thereby worsening the State Government’s ability to meet its other basic obligations to the people and further erode the economic viability of the State.

“That the Senate do reject Kaduna State Development Policy Operation (DPO) in the sum of USD350 million only as contained in the 2016 – 2018 External Borrowing (Rolling) Plan of Mr. President Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.” Speaking further, Senator Sani said that in its findings, the Committee discovered “That the Development Policy Operation, DPO (Budget Support) of USD 350 million for Kaduna State was approved by World Bank in 2016 and captured in 2016 – 2018 borrowing plan as approved by the National Assembly.

“That the credit facility has an attractive low financing data of 1.25% interest; moratorium of 5 years and a 25 year maturity tenor. “That the facility is already captured in the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). “That according to the latest Debt Management Office figures, Kaduna State has a total debt stock of USD232.1 million. “That approving the current loan request of USD350 million for Kaduna State will bring its total debt stock to USD582.1 million.

“That if this loan request is approved, the new total debt stock of USD582.1 million for Kaduna State will be unsustainable and necessarily attract huge financial burden on the meager federal allocation to the State. “With the new borrowing, the Debt Service to Revenue Ratio of Kaduna State will further be increased and thus impact negatively on the ability of the State to meet Other basic needs of its people. “The new debt stock will likely, further erode the economic viability of the State.”

Exchange Of Words At APC NEC Meeting Over Buhari’s Decision

Details have emerged of what transpired behind closed doors at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday. It was gathered on Wednesday that Buhari’s remarks before the meeting went into the closed session generated tension among NEC members.

One of NEC members, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity, said: “The session became rowdy at some point when members of NEC shouted down the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, for saying there was no need to debate the issue since the President had spoken.

“The noise was so much that security details of the President stepped into the hall as a precautionary measure. “At this point, the National Chairman (Odigie-Oyegun) stood up and threatened to use his powers to walk out members if they continued to be rowdy.

“He said if anybody had a better argument he should raise his hands and be recognised to speak. He also asked us all to have respect for the President who was at the meeting.” The source explained that earlier, the party’s National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire (SAN) had “tried to dismiss the constitutional queries raised by the President on the tenure elongation.

He said: “Our legal adviser said NEC relied on powers conferred on it by Section 13.3 of the party’s constitution. He argued that the President’s position was sub judice, because the matter was already in court. “After he spoke, the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, aligned himself with the legal position espoused by Banire.”

The source explained that the Ondo State governor added that the decision was subjected to a vote with 104 members voting in favour and four against the decision. After he spoke, Doguwa, asked members of NEC to stop the debate on the matter since the President had made his position known.

“It was at this point that the meeting became rowdy with NEC members shouting him down. This prompted security details attached to the President to rush into the meeting room to prevent a security breach,” the source said.

According to the party source, the President’s decision took everybody by surprise. He said: “I must say, it was a civilian equivalent of a coup. “We attended the National Caucus meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday and the President did not give us any hint about his new position because he was part of the last NEC meeting where the decision to extend NWC’s tenure was taken.

“Some of us felt betrayed because this is not how to treat party leaders.” The source who is also a member of the party’s NWC, said: “After tempers cooled down, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, spoke. “He made reference to an August 2015 Supreme Court judgment in the case of two Kano State House of Assembly seats won by the APC.

“The VP said we lost that case because the litigants based their argument on the process that produced the candidates not the outcome of the elections.” He said: “Osinbajo essentially spoke in favour of Mr. President. He felt it would be easier to deal with internal crisis arising from party primaries than a crisis emanating from a breach of the constitution.”

Don't Accept PDP's Apology - Tinubu Tells Nigerians

National leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians not to accept the apology from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP had on Monday apologized to Nigerians for mistakes made during its 16 years in charge of the country’s affairs.

Speaking at the 10th Bola Tinubu Colloquium in celebration of his 66th birthday, the former Lagos state governor accused the PDP of lying to Nigerians for 16 years.

He said: “We are redirecting Nigeria, it is not an easy cause to embark upon.

“Do not take their apology, they lie, falsify, changed figures for 16 years .

“They made false promises and they say don’t talk about it. It’s like when you catch a thief and they tell you to ignore him and take your own.

“We are not doing that, we have hope, we have a good leader to emulate, we have people to invest.”

Presidency Recants On Martin Luther King Awards, Says Plaque Not From Family

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has responded to reports on the leadership award allegedly bestowed on President Muhammadu Buhari by Martin Luther King Center.

Abike in a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Media, Abdurrahman Balogun, said the federal government did not state that the honour was bestowed by the King Centre, thereby accusing anti-Buhari elements of propagating “fake news”.

The presidency had earlier disclosed that, “President @MBuhari today at the State House received Martin Luther King Jnr’s family. He was also conferred with the 1st Black History Month National Black Excellence and Exceptional African Leadership Award 2018.”

The children of Martin Luther King and the King Center have, however, denied issuing the award to Buhari.

In a tweet on Wednesday, The King Center said: “The award given to President Buhari of Nigeria was not given by The King Center, at the request of The King Center or by the children of #MLK and #CorettaScottKing. @MrFixNigeria”

Dabiri, however, said Buhari received a ‘commemorative plaque’ for his fight against corruption by a member of Martin Luther Kings family not by the centre.

The statement reads “Our attention has been drawn to obviously fake online news reports on the visit of some members of the MLK family to Nigeria.

“The members, led by the Matriarch of MLK, Naomi Barbara King, were in Nigeria as part of the activities initiated to celebrate a low- key Black History Month in Nigeria as part of deepening partnership between Africa and its Diaspora.

“As part of the activities, they visited President Muhammadu Buhari and gave him a commemorative plaque for his fight against corruption and what they termed from the “ Africania Diaspora” a term for Africans in Diaspora for which the oldest of them all Naomi Barbara King was selected to present on behalf of the family (NOT MLK CENTER) as a sign of appreciation to the Nigerian President.

“It must be categorically stated here that the trip was totally privately funded and not one kobo was spent by the Nigerian government as it was all a private initiative.

“However, after two days in Nigeria, one of the members apparently granted an interview which was seen as being political , asking Nigerians to give President Muhammadu Buhari a chance to continue his good works especially of fighting corruption in Nigeria.

“As a non political group , he was asked to refute the statement , which he refused to , insisting that was how he felt , and it was his personal opinion, not that of the family nor the centre, of which he is a board member and was the Chief Operating Officer for over five years.

“This may have led to some arguements among them , which they have said they will resolve when they get back to the US., which apparently led to the tweet being circulated

“The visit to Nigeria was quite successful that they extended their stay for two major days, surprised at the negative reports on Nigeria.

“Members of the public are hereby urged to please discountenance any fake news about the visit and avoid the temptation of destroying all the good things for the sake of Politics. as the administration marches on in the fight against against corruption.”

Why Are Alcoholic Drinks Allowed To Be Sold At Motor-Parks & Bus Stops (Pics)

It is against the law to drink and drive. Yet, In Nigeria, alcoholic drinks are allowed to be sold at bus stops, motor-parks, etc.
Just like most countries in the world, Nigeria has an existing law banning driving while under the influence of alcohol. However, it appears that Nigeria only pays lip service to the enforcement of this law.

This is particular evident by the indiscriminate manner in which alcoholic beverages are sold at places where there is an abundance of motorists – especially the commercial types.

Indeed, the easiest and fastest place to access alcoholic drinks in Nigeria is at bus stops, motor parks, etc.

At motor parks, many commercial drivers typically drink all manner of harsh gins and alcoholic concoctions before they commence a trip. Okada and Keke Marwa operators are not left out of this tradition.

A drunk driver behind the wheels of mobile vehicle is capable of taking the most daredevil risk. It could also make them lose concentration or even sleep off. A drunk driver can cause harm to yourself and others. They are disasters waiting to occur.

90 per cent of road accidents in Nigeria is as a result of the indulgence in alcoholic drinks, hard drugs, etc. This is according to The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

However, this statistics appears rather curious. Especially coming from a safety institution that is not popular for stopping reckless motorist in order to subject them to the DUI test.

How often the FRSC does used breathalyzer to estimate the blood alcohol content (BAC) from a breath of reckless drivers?

Even sadder, the FRSC penalty for drink driving in Nigeria is a huge joke. A paltry N5000 fine.

In most countries of the world, driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. Of which the consequences of violating the drunk driving law can attract long-term jail term. In the UK, it can be up to 14 years in jail.

These are countries where government value the safety and protection of its people.

A society that outlaws drink driving, yet allows the indiscriminate sale of all manner of alcoholic beverages at bus stops, motor parks and garages, etc., can’t be said to be serious about eliminating drink driving – especially amount commercial motorists.

For the campaign against drink driving to be taken seriously, the fight needs to start at bus stops, motor parks, garages, etc.

I have been crying in Hebrews. Shay I made it to semi finals. And he still has the throat to still blame me. Abeg house I want to attend his weeding ooo, but I don’t want to go n start crying.”
