An Evboriaria Magistrate Court has remanded a Chief Priest of Aduwawa community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, Prince Nosa Osadolor, to prison custody for alleged forceful encroachment on the land belonging to the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Benin.

He was remanded on a 10-count charge bordering on demolition of NTA Aduwawa perimeter fencing, forceful encroachment of NTA premises with firearms and causing fear among staff of the station.

Osadolor, also known as Afro, had earlier told newsmen that the land belonged to the community’s shrine.

The priest said the land is known as ‘Egbebo’ (juju forest) and it is where the building of the priest was supposed to be built.

He said the shrine was erected by Oba Ewuare in the 15th century and that the priesthood passed from father to son.

His words: “The shrine is not mine. It was planted by Oba Ewuare. This place is a traditional ground for the shrine.”

However, presiding Magistrate, T. O. Omoruyi, remanded Osadolor to prison custody pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution on whether the court has jurisdiction to hear the case.

The case was adjourned to January 22, 2018 for mentioning.

How I Rejected Many Offers to Get Me Out of Prison by Commando Style - Obasanjo Opens Up

Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, an ex president of Nigeria,on Friday, relieved his last days with late Shehu Musa Ya’adua at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, and how he turned down an offer by those he called “my international friends” to get him out of Yola Prison using commando style operation.

According to The Nation, Obasanjo who spoke at the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the death of the late Yar’adua regretted that even though both of them strategized on how to move Nigeria forward even while in prison, their strategy failed, adding that his meeting with his former number two man at the Kirikiri prison could have been his greatest mistake.

Former Vice President and one of Yar’adua’s biggest political associate, Atiku Abubakar who is also the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shehu Yar’adua Foundation was conspicuously missing at the event, but his wife, Titi attended the event.

Speakers at the event which included Sierra Leonian President, Ernest Bai Koroma eulogised the late Tafidan Katsina for his selfless service to the country, while one of his course mates in the Army, Gen, Paul Tarfa explained that the coup that toppled Yakubu Gowon was staged principally against the junta and not aimed at Gowon.

Obasanjo who said he shared a lot of good times with Yar’adua said “When Shehu died in prison, my international friends decided that they will use the commando plan to get me out of prison and they actually did make the plan, got the money and wanted to get an helicopter to get me out of Yola prison and take me to Cameroon.

“They sent a message to me and I told them, if you do, I will not get out of prison and that was when they dropped the idea of using commando effort to get me out of prison. That would have defeated what we stood for. We stood for Nigeria and we stood to face whatever consequences standing for Nigeria would cost us. It cost Shehu Yar’adua his life. Those of us who believe in what Shehu stood for that are at still alive, the only thing that we can do is to allow the struggle to continue because we are not at the end of the struggle yet.

“If anything, we are beginning have the struggle. As Shehu said to his son, we want to bequeath to Nigerians. Our children and our children’s children a country that we can be proud of. We are not there yet. May God make us get there.”

The former President told the gathering that Shehu Yar’adua was the best deputy he could ever dream of saying “I could not have had a better deputy than Shehu Yar’adua. When I was military Head of State, we had quite a number of exciting and serious times together that we shared. Let me give you a few of the times that are interesting and some that are also not very serious.

“One day I had cold and the doctor came to see me and I said to him, supposing this cold decided to take my life and I slump, what will you do. He said I will try first aid and I will do all I need to do to revive you. I said if you tried that and it didn’t work, what will you do and he said, I will call the Chief of Staff.

“Just then, Shehu came in and I said Shehu, listen to what we were talking about and I relayed to him the discussion and told him, now that you have come in, I am here on the ground, what will you do. He said I have no problem with that, I will kick you with my military booth and say get up, this is your job.

“We had such an interesting time together. We also had difficult times together. We had to put our heads together and discuss on how we can handle the issue of transition, how to implement our own programmers and how to move Nigeria forward. We succeeded in doing what I believed was the right thing for the country at that time and putting in place a democratically el ted government.

“A few years after that, Shehu came to me in the farm and said he wanted to set up a grassroots party. He said from his study, he has discovered that Nigeria has never really had a truly grassroots party, not even NEPU.

“I asked him if there was anything he wanted us to do while in government that we did not do and he said no. I said then, I pray that this grassroots part that you want to build will succeed. I asked him, do .you want to use this grassroots party to get into power, he said not really, but if that turned out to be the case, will you ask me not to, and I told him not really, but I will be very glad if that turned out to be the case.

“Many members of that party have remained loyal to the course he set out to build. His ideals and what he stood for both when he was alive and when he departed.”

Obasanjo said Yar’adua lived a life of service, saying “those of us who know Shehu very well, know the type of man he was, the type of love he lived, his commitment to his family, to his religion, to his nation and his friends. When you asked the question, what is life, I think Shehu Yar’adua’s life typifies the answer to that question.

“He lived his life and gave us eloquent answers about what life is and that is also evident from what we have seen here today. Twenty years after he passed on, we are here with his memory still green and fresh in all of us.”

Sierra Leonian President, Ernest Bai Koroma described the late Yar’adua as a great African leader who was greatly loved by his people because he played his part well, saying “we are consoled by his exemplary life. He was a great patriot. The interest of the nation was first in his heart.

Former Minister of Foreign Affair and member of the Board of Trustees of the Yar’adua foundation, Chief Dubem Onyia said the democracy the country is enjoying today could not have been possible if Yar’adua had not put in place mechanism for it.

“Shehu believed in a United Nigeria built on people rather than territory, a country that where you come from or your religion does not matter. Where our faith and passport matters. He believed that we must be able to do for ourselves what others cannot do for us.

“His faith and belief in this country is undiluted without being immodest, no political leader, dead or alive in this country, not even our founding fathers have ever developed political, associates like Shehu did. We believe in his ideology and legacy, came together to establish a foundation that has no comparison in this country.”

Some of those present at the event include retired military officers, captains of industries, politicians including former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Waziri, former Governors Donald Duke of Cross Rivers and Peter Obi of Anambra, Mrs Titilayo Ajanaku, Hajia Titi Abubakar, Amb, Patrick Dele Cole, Gen. Paul Tarfa among others.

Speaking in Tongues is Nigerian Churches is Fake, Nigerian Pastors in Ministry for Money - Daddy Freeze

Daddy Freeze

Controversial media personality, Daddy Freeze has again attacked Nigerian pastors. This time around, he said most pastors are into the work of God because of the money involved.

According to him, Nigerian pastors left their professions because they can’t earn as much unlike in the ministry .

In a video shared on Youtube, he said, “There are many fake pastors because of monetization; that pastor who cursed me is an architect, the one at BankyW’s wedding is a doctor.

“Many of them are leaving profitable field because ministry is a more profitable field.

“Monetization has made fake pastors come into two fold, it has made real pastors preach false messages.

“Every doctrine in Nigeria has been monetized, you hear pastors say this year you will find your ‘apollos’

“Apollos in the Bible was increase in word of God not referring to sowing, Matthew 13;7 this verse speaks of seed of faith not money; those that twist this to you are thieves. There’s nothing spiritual about those criticizing me, the only spirituality in them is the ability to twist your brain.

OAP Freeze also countered speaking in tongues in Nigerian Pentecostal churches, describing it as fake .

He added, “Speaking in tongues in Nigeria Pentecostal churches is fake but speaking in tongues is not fake.

“When speaking in tongues, you should speak in languages not in tongues that no one can understand.

1Cor 14:26-28; someone must interpret tongues…There is no speaking in tongues without an interpreter

“Interpretation of tongues is missing in today’s pentecostal churches , if anyone speaks in tongues one or two should speak in tongues one at a time not multitude. That is falsehood

1Cor 14:23 is what pastors used to confuse you, they tell you tongues is an unknown language which carnal mind cannot understand.
Everyone speaking in tongues in the church is false because it is a gift that everyone does not receive.

“I’m a preacher that speaks from history and bible not sentiments like others; that’s why I can’t say God told me to pay titheS like they say.

“I would tell you what God kept in bible not what God told me.”

‘Chocolate Milk Mommies’ Breastfeed Their Babies In New Photoshoot To Encourage Other Nursing Mothers

Members of Chocolate Milk Mommies – a parenting group in Birmingham Alabama have posed for a photoshoot while breastfeeding their babies. According to the group, “nursing carries a negative stigma within the black community” and the move is an attempt to shatter this stigma.

One of the members of the group, Adams Rauslyn said, “It’s important to show black women breastfeeding because our community needs it. We need the support and we need our children to be healthy as well.”

“The indecency claim of public breastfeeding generalizations makes it hard for any woman, let alone an African American woman to nurture her child through breastfeeding.”

The group hopes that the images will show the beauty of breastfeeding and encourage more black women to nurse their babies.

Where is TSTV?

The hype that greeted the newly launched satellite Television, TSTV seem to have died down as my Nigerian still remain in oblivion as to the status or fate of the provider.
TSTV which announced its services in September and had its official launch on October 1, was well received by many Nigerians who saw them as the messiah that would break the monopoly of satellite TV in Nigeria.
It launch on Oct. 1, with a promise to offer pay as you go services and lower rates for its programmes including the highly favoured football channels that air European League matches, got a large number of Nigerians interested.
In their joy, many went on to mock other existing providers, taunting them that their “reign of exploitation” was over.
However, the first disappointment came when TSTV extended sales of its decoder to Nov. 1, an action which didn’t seem to debase their fans who went about on social media and other platforms reaffirming their support for the new provider.
Even an allegation of attempting to illegally air sports channels from bEIN did not seem to shake the Nigerian supporters.
Two months after its official launch and one month after its commencement of sales, many Nigerians are still asking: “Where is TSTV”?

Atiku replies I Go Dye, says he is mostly right about his observations

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has replied Nigerian comedian, Francis Agoda, popularly known as I Go Dye, who took to Instagram to attack the likely Presidental candidate for the 2019 elections.

In an open letter on his Instagram page, I Go Dye had asked Atiku to forget his ambition and give the youths a chance to occupy Aso Rock come 2019.

He added that Atiku had his chance to change things when he was still Vice President.

Atiku’s reply:

Dear I Go Dye,
I read your post on Instagram.
It was hard to miss it because it was on every major news website. I would like to say that you were mostly right. The questions you raised in your post are similar to the ones I have been asked by other young people on social media, so I am replying this not just to you as a person, but to all young Nigerians who have asked similar questions.
Firstly, you are right. The Nigerian youth have often been taken for granted, and almost every leader in our history has taken young people for granted. But it’s important to point how this started — for people like me who saw Independence; our leadership was mostly driven by young people. Then came the coups, and the civil war, and then more coups. Nigeria ended up with a long period of military dictatorship for many decades, in which time; those young leaders aged, but still remained leaders. Fela, Gani, Enahoro, and Beko were young leaders, yet remained leaders until their demise. That was because of the stagnation brought on by decades of political instability.
By the time we got to 1999, the young people of the day had not been prepared for leadership, because there was no leadership or apprenticeship process under dictatorships. This is one of the reasons the age of leaders has continued to rise. That was because of the leadership stagnation brought on by decades of political instability. Imagine a school that did not graduate any students for 5 years, by the time the top class finally graduates, you will have a backlog of undergraduates.
Our young people are not to blame; we need to remedy this national failure. Last week, there were local government elections in Akwa Ibom, with over 60% of the seats won by young people, less than 35 years old. That’s how progress can be made. Young people need to participate from the grassroots, all the way across board. Appointments are good, but getting elected is even better. I also understand the issues around funding elections which keep women and young people out, and I will address this in an article I am publishing soon.
I do understand your frustration on the issue, however, I tell people my age that to understand young Nigerians, we need to understand the difference between Nigeria and Naija. Naija embodies the hopes and dreams of young Nigerians, the country they love and long to go home to when they are abroad. Naija is the country that brings them pride in music, film, comedy, fashion, and technology. It is the country of Wizkid, Asa, Davido, Tuface, the Olympic bobsled team, Iwobi and Don Jazzy Again.
Nigeria on the other hand, is the country of their parents, the country where leaders are constantly failing them, of Boko Haram, of herdsmen violence, of recessions and joblessness. Our young people need us to make our country live up to the aspirations of Naija by fixing the problems associated with Nigeria.
I think it’s important to address the accusation about my tenure as Vice President, that I did nothing for young people. Firstly, as VP, I can only be judged on the responsibilities I was given. A VP obviously is not the driver of government. For example, you can’t blame Prof Osinbajo for all that is going on with the current government. He can only do what he’s allowed to do.
But let me speak about what you can judge me by, my assigned responsibilities. As VP, I assembled what is arguably the best Economic Team ever in Nigeria. It was made up of young, world class professionals, who came home to work. Some of those professionals are now political leaders, governors and world leaders in their own right.
If you ask what our first task was, coming into government in 1999, it was to bring stability to the economy after decades of military rule. For example, between 1999 and 2003, oil prices then were hovering between $16 and $28 yet we managed to pay up salary arrears from decades back, clear up our national debts and built up foreign reserves. Our GDP grew at the fastest rate we’ve seen since the return to democracy.
You mentioned that I never brought young people into leadership, but my record speaks differently. I have a proven record of bringing young, unknown professionals into service. Many of the professionals and ministers I brought in were in their 30s and early 40s. Some of those young leaders have become governors in their states. I went to the World Bank and met a bright lady, convinced her to come back home, and she became a star in our government. To show you we had effective leadership, the same lady could not replicate her exploits under a different government.
I was also in charge of privatisation and I have witnesses that I never interfered with the process. I never bought anything belonging to the government. I was quite wealthy before coming into government, with declared assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars in 1999 (which was put in a trust when I became VP); so it was understandable that many of the wealthy Nigerian business people who participated in the privatisation programme were my friends. Did I use my influence to get them better deals? No. As the then DG of BPE testified under oath, I never used my position to interfere with his work.My legacy as Vice President, I would say is the banking consolidation process, for which I gave political backing for. Many big people were putting a lot of political pressure to not change the status quo, but we knew that if that consolidation was not done, Nigeria could not grow. Because of that banking consolidation, Nigerian banks don’t fail anymore the way they used to.
I oversaw the telecoms revolution, which is why young people like you, I Go Dye, now have a flourishing career. Under our tenure, we witnessed a large repatriation of Nigerians back to Nigeria, driven by the hope of the recovering economy. It is sad that many of those young people are heading back abroad now — this is to show you that leadership matters.
I know many of these have been forgotten because it was a long time ago, and successive administrations did not follow up on the progress we made. But that is also not to say we were blameless. I was largely frozen out in the second term of our tenure, and I regret that we had that disagreement with my boss. Some say I was disloyal, but I looked at the events in Zimbabwe recently, and it gives me confidence that I did the right thing fighting the attempts to elongate the presidential tenure beyond eight years. If I did not win that fight, do you think we would be having a discussion on young people getting into leadership today?
Intels. I want to address this because you mentioned it. It was the Shagari government that started the Onne Port and later abandoned it. In summary, my business partner and I saw an opportunity to build Nigeria’s oil industry using world class infrastructure, but driven by Nigerians. We went out and took loans to build the facilities, but as we went on, more opportunities opened up, which allowed us access to even more capital. We ended up borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars, mostly from Europe, to build the port, singlehandedly charting the course of Nigeria’s oil industry.
Honestly, I did not ever think we would be that successful, which was why I kept my day job, when we started it. It was just what you would call, a side hustle, but it grew so big, and I had to quit my government job to focus on it. Today, every oil major uses the facilities we built. The government only became clients after the oil companies. Our company has expanded to several countries in Africa. Even the FG has seen that that company is the most competent logistics company in Africa, which is why it gives Intels the most complex operations to manage.
But Intels as a corporate citizen is loved in the locations it operates. That’s because we invest in scholarships, hire young people from the community and train them to become world class technicians. As CSR, we have gone into partnership with the NFF to train young Nigerian footballers, and provide support for the local league. We are loved by the youth in our local communities.
In my home state of Adamawa for example, I’ve created over 50,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect ones. We are the largest private employers of labour in the state only second to the state government. It’s not a lot, but it does help reduce unemployment. Who do you think are holding those jobs? Yes, young people.
I Go Dye, I’m not a messiah. I do not promise Eldorado or $1 = N1. But I always ask to look at the economic progress we made under my leadership and what I am doing in private business and judge me by those. People say I became rich in government. It’s a lie. I had hundreds of millions of dollars in assets declared in 1999. My businesses (my shares of which were held in a Blind Trust while I was in government) continued to grow since then. I was able to personally bankroll the PDP back then, so surely I was not poor. But I understand it is politics. So it’s normal to be called names. But how come in all these years, none of my opponents has found any evidence to indict me?
The people who are afraid of me changing the status quo they enjoy will always try to frighten young people about me.
Some people believe youth empowerment is giving handouts to young people instead of building a strong economy. They are wrong. They want to give handouts so they can control young people. But how long can we continue like that? Our country is borrowing to pay salaries, yet we are still holding on to outdated models just so we can control young people for elections.
The success of young Nigerian entrepreneurs in IT & technology, retail, music, and arts shows that given the chance, they can run anything. My job is to be a bridge, which supports our young people achieve these ideals. I will never say only I can do this. I can’t do it alone. I need your support, I Go Dye, so help our economy grow, to ensure that within 10 years, our young people can take over completely.
In summary, I Go Dye, I am not a person who says what he cannot do or show proof. I am giving you an invitation to sit down and ask me any questions you may have. I would also like to take you around, show you some of the businesses I have built, and let you speak to the young people who run those places. It is good to try to convince you that I can do better by our young people, but it is even better to show you. Send me a direct message on Twitter, and we will take it from there.

Fast-rising act, T-Boy, creates ‘AfroLife’

Sound identity has been an age long crisis in the entertainment industry and has accounted for the death of many potentially great music talents.

Owing to the ever shifting global soundscape, many musicians find themselves dabbling into genres that they believe will be profitable and keep them relevant. This has indeed worked for the likes of Wizkid, Davido, P-Square etc who have consistently adjusted their style to fit every sound era but the same success rate cannot be said for a majority of other acts.
Nigerian singer and songwriter, TBoy (Tochukwu Chukwudi Ezeji) has done his homework by quickly identifying this problem, and has now created a lasting solution that will not only bring clarity to his music sojourn, but to other artistes like him who are tired of boxing their content into unfitting categories.
The household names in Urban African Music right now are Afropop, Afro beats and Afrofusion and just like the ‘Lotto boys’ in the UK have defined their own genre as ‘Afrobbean’.
TBoy now refers to his own personal style as the ‘Afro Life’ genre. 2017 has, no doubt, been an incredible one for TBoy. He surveyed the industry atmosphere with his first unofficial release ‘Jeje’, before getting signed to his current label, Billionaire Minds Enterprise. He promptly dropped two hot singles, ‘Whine’ and ‘Kilofe’, both of which were met with very high applause from his rapidly growing fans. He pressed even further with a massive nationwide tour that saw him network and perform at the biggest entertainment media hubs in the South-East, South West, North Central and the South South regions of Nigeria. In February , Tboy teamed up with Rexpapi and Jesse beats to create an ultra smooth and deeply sensual tune by the title ‘Jeje’.
To carefully test the waters, a viral video was shot for it but following the immense reception, ‘Whine’ was released as TBoy’s official single and it can be easily said that this is where his Afrolife concept was birthed. Enlisting the magic strumming fingers of Fiokee, TBoy effortlessly fused Ibo highlife lyrics with contemporary elements to deliver the unquestionable banger, ‘Whine’; which was followed up swiftly with a super crisp video, directed by the multiple award winning Clarence Peters.
‘Kilofe’ is the most recent single still making waves all over. He performed it to a stadium full of fans at the recently concluded Phynofest concert in Enugu and all indications show that TBoy has paid his industry dues through his hardwork, consistency, versatility and admirable tenacity towards his craft. In a bid to end his amazing year in grand style, he has confirmed that he will be dropping his biggest tune yet and this one is aptly titled ‘Monica’. Rumours have it that this new Afrolife tune features a soon-to-be-revealed internationally respected guest artiste and in deep appreciation to his fans for their rigid support, TBoy plans to activate this release with generous end-of-year giveaways that will be announced across his social media platforms.

Supreme Court sacks APC lawmaker

A member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing Ovia South West, Sunday Aghedo of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was on Friday sacked by the Supreme Court.

The judgment delivered by the Apex Court also dismissed the appeals filed by the sacked lawmaker and his party, the APC.
In the unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Dantijo Mohammed, the court declared Mr Godwin Adenomo also of the APC the winner of the general election in Ovia South-West constituency of Edo State House of Assembly held on April 11, 2015.
The Supreme Court affirmed the judgment of Benin Division of the Court of Appeal Benin and held that Mr Godwin Adenomo won the APC primary election conducted by the APC held on the 2, December 2014 for nominating the party’s candidate for the general election held on 11th April 2015.
The Court consequently ordered the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly to swear in Mr Godwin Adenomo as a member of the Assembly representing Ovia South West constituency.
The apex court further ordered Hon Aghedo to refund all salaries and allowances he collected from Edo State House of Assembly from May 2015 to date to the Edo State House of Assembly within 90 days.
The court also awarded N300, 000 cost against Hon Aghedo, the appellant who had challenged the decision of the Court of Appeal Benin Division delivered by Justice Moore Asiemo Adumein.
The pre-election matter arose from the primary election in which Mr Godwin Adenomo scored the highest votes cast at the APC primary for Ovia South- West constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, scoring 152 votes against 140 scored by Mr Sunday Aghedo.
Instead of submitting Adenomo name, his opponent’s name was forwarded as the party’s candidate for the election and the three-man appeal panel set up by the party to look into his complaint upheld the decision of the party.
Dissatisfied with the decision of the party’s appeal panel, Adenomo dragged the APC and the primary election Committee to court over the imposition of the sacked lawmaker as the winner of the party primaries to the State House of Assembly in 2014.
He said he won the primaries but was denied the party’s ticket which was given to Aghedo.
The Federal High Court sitting in Benin had, in its judgement ordered the APC to conduct a fresh primary election for the position but Adenomo rejected the ruling and headed for the appellate court.
Aghedo not satisfied with the lower court’s judgment which set aside the decision of the party’s appeal panel and also invalidated the primary election conducted on 2nd December 2014 and the election held on 11th April 2015, headed to the Appeal court for redress.
The Court of Appeal set aside the judgment of the Federal High court and declared Adenomo winner of the election and the APC appealed to the Supreme Court claiming it has the right to sponsor a candidate of its choice.
Reacting to the judgment on Friday Mr Adenomo thanked the judiciary for standing for justice and advised politicians to always seek redress in court instead of restoring to violence any time they feel cheated

Human Trafficking: Returnees vow to expose traffickers to law enforcement agencies

SOME victims of human trafficking in Benin City, the Edo State capital, have vowed to take their pound of flesh from their traffickers who lured them from their parents, with the promise to give them decent jobs in Italy and other parts of Europe.

The victims, who would not want their names in print, for security reason, said they are ready to lead officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the houses of members of the human trafficking cartels in the state and in Europe.
“We know where the human traffickers live in the state. Some of the madams are in Italy and in other European countries, and have relatives in Benin who take the girls to native doctors and some pastors for oath taking,” they said.
The victims said they are ready to work with the Federal Government to unmask the faces behind the illicit business.
“We want to form a strong advocacy and support group that will assist the federal government to bring an end to illegal migration and human trafficking in Edo State.”
“We had a terrible experience in Libya and would not wish same for anybody. We are ready to name and shame them and give names and addresses of these dealers in human flesh to the government,” they said.
Recall that the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, recently expressed the commission’s resolve to go after human traffickers.
Magu, who said this while receiving a delegation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), who paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, said the anti-graft agency has jurisdiction over human trafficking, which he said was an offshoot of corruption.
“We are prepared to go after human traffickers, because we strongly believe that it is an aspect of corruption, and corruption is the greatest enemy of Nigeria. Corruption is the reason why young Nigerians are risking their lives walking through the Mediterranean up to Spain and other European countries in search of greener pasture.
“It is a very sad situation and we must change the trend by ensuring that we join hands to fight corruption, as this is the only solution to the ills militating against our country’s development,” Magu said in a statement issued by Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the agency’s spokesman.
While calling for NAPTIP’s partnership in the fight against corruption, Magu assured Okah-Donli of the EFCC’s support in combating the increasing cases of “organ harvesting” involving Nigerians

Kidnapped Senator Arise regains freedom

SENATOR Ayo Arise, who was abducted last Sunday by yet to be identified people, had regained freedom.

Sources said Arise himself told some people in the state that he is now a free man, but efforts to reach him on the telephone was unsuccessful.
Some members of his native Oye community, when asked, said they were not sure of where he was released, but explained that Senator Arise himself announced that he was on his way to Abuja.
“He must have been released from somewhere in Kogi State”, a member of the community said.
Details of how he was released is still sketchy by press time but many sources confirmed that he has regained freedom. It could not be ascertained where he was released and if any ransom was paid.
By Thursday, it was gathered that the kidnappers had reduced their ransom from N80million to N50illion.
It was also gathered in his native Oye-Ekiti community that clerics were gathering daily at the palace of the Oloye of Oye, Oba Michael Ademolaju, to hold prayers for his safe return from the kidnappers’ den.
Sources in the community had also said that sons, daughters of Oye-Ekiti and friends of the lawmaker, who represented Ekiti Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, were also contributing money ostensibly to secure his release.
Speaking in his release, the President of Oye Progressives Union (OPU), umbrella association of the indigenes of Oye, Mr Akin Omole, also confirmed the release of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, saying “yes I’ve heard from him and he told us that he has regained his freedom.”
Omole, who spoke in the telephone, said “we are immensely grateful to God Almighty and to everyone who acted one way or the other for his release,” saying “Oye Ekiti is highly grateful and we are saying thank you.”
Omole said “OPU on behalf of the Oye Ekiti community is grateful to everyone who played one or more roles and contributed in several ways towards ensuring that our illustrious son is freed without being harmed.”
Arise was kidnapped on Sunday evening somewhere in Kogi State, as he was returning to Abuja after attending a function in Ekiti State.

US agrees to return Abacha, Alamieyeseigha’s loot

Gen Sani Abacha
THE government of the United States of America (USA) has agreed to return to Nigeria the over $300 million looted by Nigeria’s former Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha, and a former Governor of Bayelsa State, the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
Mr Salihu Isah, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) yesterday said the minister has signed an agreement with the US government in that direction.
Malami had disclosed in his speech at the Chatham House, London in the United Kingdom (UK) that the US government had taken custody of the money, including parts of it stashed in the UK, France and Jersey.
In the speech titled, “Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Effort: Working with the Media, Civil Society and International Partners”, the minister said the US government took custody of the over $300 million following forfeiture orders made by American courts.
He said of the $300million, the sums of $1.6million and £21.7million were in the UK, $145 million was stashed in France, and $299 million in Jersey.
According to the minister, tackling corruption must be a major area of focus for any Government that sincerely seeks to improve its society.
He told the House that he has signed two Agreements on behalf of Nigeria with Switzerland and the USA for the return of previously looted funds.
“The first agreement with Switzerland will involve the return of $321 million traced to Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Sani Abacha which has been the subject of intense diplomatic horse-trading and negotiations over the last two decades.
“The second agreement, with the US, sets outs the roadmap for the eventual return of sums in excess of $300m currently in the custody of the US Government following Forfeiture Orders by American courts and which relate to monies stashed away in the UK ($1.6m and 21.7m Pounds), France ($145m) and Jersey ($299m) respectively, by certain interests including a former Governor of Nigeria’s Bayelsa State, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeisegha and the Abacha family, among others”, Malami stated in his speech.
He said the whistle-blowers policy, which is a component of the anti-corruption war was introduced in Nigeria to encourage a citizen-centred approach to the fight against corruption and added that, despite the initial challenges, the policy has proven to be a huge success resulting in several recoveries by the Government, including the famous seizure of $43m plus cash discovered in a flat in Lagos on 12th April, 2017.
He commended the Chatham House for the active interest it has taken in the evolution of democracy and development in Nigeria.

S/Court bars parties, media from accessing full text of judgments

The Supreme Court, on Friday, activated its constitutional powers to hold on to full text of judgments it had delivered until seven days.

Justice Dattijo Mohammed, leading two other justices of the court, held that the non-release of copies of 10 judgments he delivered on Friday was to adhere strictly to the provision of the constitution.
He said the main reason was to ensure that intolerable typographical errors were corrected before they could be made public document, as, according to him, such noticeable errors can be misinterpreted.
“The court has the constitutional powers to hold on to its judgments for seven day, so this is not new as it has the backing of the law.
“We however regret the setback as many of you had come today with the hope of going back with copies of the judgments. “The court will however not make the copies of its judgments to parties again until after seven days,’’ Mohammed said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that a reporter, Ms Jamila Audu, said journalists were worst hit by this decision, adding that it was characteristic of the justices of the apex court to simply read out the conclusions of their judgments, leaving journalists to heavily depend on the full text of those judgments.
She said journalists had, therefore, cashed in on the immediate availability of copies of those judgments to write their stories, but as it stands, such luxury might have come to an end.
Lawyers, Senior Advocates and their clients had walked out of the court, even more dejected as they considered seven days to be too long to have access to copies of the judgments.

2019 Presidency: Angry Atiku shuns press, others after talks with IBB

Journalists and supporters of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar were yesterday, shocked after the former vice-president came out from a meeting with former President Ibrahim Babangida with a long face reflective of a red card shown to his 2019 presidential aspiration.

Atiku, who arrived Minna airport to a cheerful reception from his supporters, breezed past the same supporters after a one and half hour closed-door meeting with Babangida during which the latter was said to have asked him to forget his presidential aspiration.
Meanwhile, the leadership contest for Atiku’s new political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was, last night, turning into a heated three-man contest in the most competitive leadership contest in the history of the party.
Ahead of the contest scheduled to play out tomorrow, Prince Uche Secondus, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, and Prof. Tunde Adeniran were said to have emerged out of the pack of eight candidates in a contest in which the dominance of the governors was being put to serious test.
Ahead of the election tomorrow, party officials have scheduled a meeting with all nine declared candidates for this morning. It was the expectation of some of party chieftains, last night, that this morning’s meeting would be used to build a consensus among the candidates.
Yesterday, following series of meetings among the six Southwest candidates in Abuja, it emerged that some of them were inclining themselves towards a consensus candidate from the region.
A consensus was yet to be arrived at mainly because Prof. Adeniran, who has acquired a national momentum, has, however, failed to impress his home base.
The meeting between the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Convention Committee and the eight candidates scheduled for 10.00 a.m. at the National Secretariat of the party is to be followed by another meeting with candidates in the other 20 positions on offer tomorrow and subsequently with chairmen of the state chapters of the party.

Nigeria, US sign agreement on return of Abacha, Alamieyeseigha’s loot

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has signed an agreement with the United States of America spelling out the roadmap for the return to Nigeria over $300m looted by Nigeria’s former Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha, and a former Governor of Bayelsa State, the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Malami said the US government had taken custody of the money, including parts of it stashed in the United Kingdom, France and Jersey.

This is contained in the speech delivered by the AGF at Chatham House, London in the UK on Thursday.

A copy of the speech made available to journalists in Abuja by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah, via e-mail, was titled, ‘Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Effort: Working with the Media, Civil Society and International Partners’.

The minister stated that the US government took custody of the over $300m following forfeiture orders made by American courts.

He said of the $300m, the sums of $1.6m and £21.7m were in the UK, $145m was stashed in France, and $299m in Jersey.

The disclosure by the AGF followed an earlier tripartite agreement he signed alongside the representatives of the Swiss government and World Bank for the return by Switzerland to Nigeria the sum of $321m looted by Abacha and members of his family.

BREAKING: Britain to pay £35-39bn in Brexit divorce deal

Britain will likely end up paying between £35 billion and £39 billion to the EU under the Brexit deal struck by Theresa May early on Friday morning, it is understood.

Though negotiators have avoided putting an official figure on the financial settlement in the joint text agreed last night, British officials in Brussels close to the discussions say the methodology should produce a net bill of under £40 billion.
Downing Street also gave the nod to the calculations on Friday morning – though hardline eurosceptics such as Nigel Farage described the figure as “humiliating” and “way more than we need to pay”.
The figure is net rather than gross – in that it subtracts the smaller amount of money the EU owes from the larger amount of money Britain owes the bloc.
Under the plan, the UK is expected to pay somewhere between €17 billion and €18 billion into the 2019 ‘multi annual financial framework’ (MFF) – effectively the EU's budget round.
It will also pay between €21 and €23 billion into the so-called “RAL” outstanding at the end of 2020 – effectively a credit facility for the EU whose acronym come from the French term “reste à liquider”.
Officials also expect the UK to pay between €2 to €4 billion for actual liabilities Britain owes the EU – mostly things like the future pensions of European civil servants.
But the EU also owes Britain its stake of the European Investment Bank’s capital, which is around €40 and €45 billion, and will pay that back to the UK over the long term.
The joint text agreed early on Friday morning has scant detail about the payment schedule, but is clear that the UK won’t have to make any advance payments it wouldn’t be making in the EU.
“Payments arising from the financial settlement will become due as if the UK had remained a Member State. In particular, the UK will not be required to incur expenditures earlier than would be the case had it remained a Member State unless agreed by both sides,” the joint text says.
“It may be appropriate for the UK and the Union to agree on a simplified procedure for settling some elements of the payment schedule in the second phase of negotiations. Such a procedure should be based on an agreed forecast and, where appropriate, provision for subsequent review and correction.

Paucity of funds hits Presidential Committee on Northeast

Barely a year after its inauguration by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative has been hit by paucity of funds.

Vice Chairman of the PCNI, Alhaji Tijjani Musa Timsah disclosed this while hosting Senate Committee on Special Duties in Abuja.
He noted that the Committee was doing a lot in line with its mandate of reconstruction and rehabilitation of victims of insurgency in the Northeast, decrying that funding was a major challenge confronting it.
“We have been able to put up strategic framework to tackle challenges in the Northeast in line with our mandate.”
“We have challenges of paucity of funds. We are calling on Nigerians to rally round us because challenges of Northeast are challenges of Nigerians’, he said.
According to him, the 2018 budgetary provision of N47 billion was grossly inadequate, saying that Northeast has six states with approximately 20%pf Nigeria’s landmass.
Reacting, the visiting Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Abdulaziz Murtala Nyako, pointed that the legislature was happy with the framework of tackling challenges in the Northeast.
He expressed that the Senate would not rest on its oars until victims of insurgency were fully settled.
The lawmaker who represents Adamawa Central Senatorial district also acknowledged that the agency needed support, pointing out that they could only achieve their plans when sufficient funds were made available to them.
He added that the Senate would look into their budget in 2018 with a view to intervene, saying that devastation in Adamawa state alone as a result of insurgency could gulp over N47 billion which was appropriated for the entire Northeast.
“We are happy with the framework of tackling challenges in the Northeast by Presidential Committee on Northeast Initiative and they really need further support.”
“They know what they are doing, they have their plans, particularly funding so that they can achieve their plans,’ the lawmaker maintained.
