Court remands Ex Gov Suswam’s aides in Makurdi prison

A serving house member of Benue State Assembly, Hon Kester Kyenge, two former council chairmen and aides to former governor, Gabriel Suswam have been ordered remanded in Makurdi prison custody.

Others remanded are: Mr David Sev-Av and Alex Ogaba, former council chairmen in the state, while Mr Terfa Bosua and Andrew Ayande were aides to erstwhile governor of the state, Dr Gabriel Suswam.

Justice Joseph Aneke of Federal High Court in Makurdi on Friday, ordered the five-person remanded in prison till October, 17, 2017, pending when the court would determine the bail application.

The remanded persons were part of the 52 indicted by the Justice Elizabeth Kpojime Commission of Inquiry set up by present administration to probe the activities of eight years tenure of the past administration.

The accused persons are standing trial on corruption charges bordering on money laundering.

Justice Joseph Aneke, who gave the order while ruling on a bail application brought before him by counsel to the accused, Mr Andrew Wombo, prayed the court to grant his clients bail using its discretion.

Justice Aneke faulted the bail application and asked the defense counsel to go back and look at it carefully in order not to jeopardise the integrity of the court.

Earlier, prosecution counsel, Kehinde Fagbemi, told the court that the accused persons were standing trial on corruption charges bordering on money laundering.

When the defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against them, the prosecution counsel applied for a date to open her case against the defendants, even as she prayed the court to remand them in prison custody pending a date to be fixed for continuation of the matter.

While arguing on a bail application brought by the defense counsel, the prosecution counsel asked the court to use its discretion in considering the application.

Counsel to the defendants, Andrew Wombo, who did not object to the application by prosecution counsel seeking for a date to open her case against the defendants, however, objected to the prayer to remand them in prison custody, noting that they have been on administrative bail since 2016 but had not jumped bail conditions.

He said the accused persons had sworn through various affidavits that they would not breach the bail conditions.

Femi Adesina: Those criticising Buhari’s ‘focus on north’ request are ignorant

Femi Adesina: Those criticising Buhari's 'focus on north' request are ignorant

Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, has described Nigerians criticising President Muhammadu Buhari's request to the World Bank Group for focus on the north as ignorant and mischievous.

Jim Jong Kim, president of the group, said at a news conference on Thursday that Buhari asked the organisation to concentrate its intervention efforts on northern Nigeria.

Adesina refused to react to the claim when TheCable reached him for comment on Friday morning.

But in a statement a few hours later, the presidential spokesman used some harsh words on Buhari's critics, describing them as "insidious minds".

"Those who specialise in a deliberate twisting of information have wailed and raged endlessly on the news item credited to the World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim, who disclosed in Washington DC, United States of America, that President Muhammadu Buhari had requested a concentration of the bank's intervention efforts in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in the north-east," he said.

"The ignorant and mischievous people, who twist everything for their vile purposes, are making it seem that it was a calculated attempt to give the North an unfair advantage over other parts of Nigeria.

"The truth of the matter is that President Buhari, right from his first week in office in June, 2015, had reached out to the G-7 in Germany that Nigeria needed help to rebuild the North-east, which had been terribly devastated by insurgency. He said the country would prefer help in terms of rebuilding of infrastructure, rather than cash donation, which may end up being misappropriated. In concert with governors of the region, a comprehensive list of needed repairs was sent to the G-7 leaders.

"Also, during a trip to Washington in 2015, and many other engagements that followed, President Buhari sought the help of the World Bank in rebuilding the beleaguered north-east, which was then being wrested from the stranglehold of a pernicious insurgency. It was something always done in the open, and which reflected the president's concern for the region.

"Those ululating over the disclosure by the president of the World Bank should be a bit reflective, and consider the ravages that the north-east has suffered since 2009, when the Boko Haram insurgency started. Schools, hospitals, homes, entire villages, towns, cities, bridges, and other public utilities have been blown up, laid waste, and lives terminated in excess of 20,000, while widows and orphans littered the landscape. The humanitarian crisis was in monumental proportions.

"President Buhari simply did what a caring leader should do. He took the battle to the insurgents, broke their backs, and then sought for help to rebuild, so that the people could have their lives back. Should that then elicit the negative commentary that has trailed the disclosure from the World Bank? Not at all, except from insidious minds.

"President Buhari has a pan-Nigerian mandate, and he will discharge his duties and responsibilities in like manner. Any part of the country that requires special attention would receive it, irrespective of primordial affinities, which narrow-minded people have not been able to live above. This president will always work in the best interest of all parts of the country at all times. Let ethnic warriors sheathe their swords."

The presidency also issued a statement on Twitter saying the north-east remained a priority for Buhari.

IPOB: We’re the biggest mass movement on earth… we can’t change our name

IPOB: We're the biggest mass movement on earth… we can't change our name

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described itself as the "biggest mass movement anywhere on earth", vowing to retain its name.

In a statement on Friday, the group said the proscription by the federal government cannot force it to operate under a new name.

IPOB accused the government of working with some notable groups in the region to "give the impression that IPOB is no more".

"We the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leadership worldwide under the command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the prophet our time, wish to bring to the attention of Biafrans and the world at large that IPOB has never and will never change name because of kangaroo and black market order obtained from a federal high court Abuja," read the statement by Emma Powerful, spokesman of the group.

"It came to our knowledge that some unscrupulous individuals and groups in our society have been paid by federal government, Igbo governors and Ohaneze Ndigbo led by Nnia Nwodo to form another group.

"There is no such organisation in place of IPOB.

"The fact of the matter is that the federal government, in collusion with Igbo governors, are using some individuals to give the impression that IPOB is no more.

"Nothing could be further from the truth. Our protests going on all over the world is clear evidence that IPOB is presently enjoying more appeal than at any other time in our history.

"Many more scams like this will be unleashed on the gullible in the coming weeks and months but we are not perturbed because we have machinery in place to debunk such nonsense as they arise.

"People are flooding to IPOB that remains till this day, the biggest mass movement anywhere on earth.

"The federal government, Igbo governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo may form these mushroom groups once in a while but they quickly fizzle out as they came."

Smuggling: Customs removes 27 pick-up vans from sales stands

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has evacuated 27 Toyota Hilux pick-up vans with duty value of N432 million and suspected to have been smuggled into the country, from sales stands.

Mr Aminu Dangaladima , the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, made the development  known to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Dangaladima said that the vehicles were evacuated at two car sales stands on Kubwa Expressway in Abuja.

He said that NCS under the on-going reforms had  continued to improve in all aspects, especially in the areas of suppression of smuggling.

" On Wednesday, Oct. 10, based on credible intelligence, operatives of NCS Compliance Team went to two open car stands along Kubwa Expressway in FCT and evacuated 27 Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles suspected to be smuggled into the country.

" These vehicles have estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N432 million.

"We (Customs) urge the owners of these vehicles to come forward with valid Customs clearance documents otherwise they will be liable to seizure and subsequent forfeiture to the Federal Government in line with laws of the land.

"For the avoidance of doubt, what we are doing is in-line with the provisions of Section 147 of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap 45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria,2004(power to search premises).

"Section 154 CEMA, Cap 45 Laws of Federation of Nigeria (power to patrol freely).

"It must be understood that being in possession of smuggled items is an offence under Section 3 of Customs and Excise (special penal and other provision) Act Cap 47 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004," Dangaladima said.

He said the service was making progress on investigations in illegal arms importation and had made some arrests.

Dangaladima said the Comptroller-General of Customs would be on the entourage of President Muhammadu Buhari to Turkey for sideline bilateral meeting with the Turkish Customs Authority.

"This is with the aim to permanently deal and put an end to such deadly importation coming from Turkey,'' he said.

Dangaladima said the idea that one could abide by the  laws of other countries and contravene Nigerian Laws on arrival would no longer be tolerated.

He said NCS would continue to contribute its quota to national economic development and security.

Newsmen recall that in September NCS intercepted 18 exotic vehicles, including 13 bullet proof vehicles.

The service has also intercepted large consignments of arms at the ports in recent times.

Proscribe IPOB Now! Lai Mohammed Urges International Partners

Lai-Mohammed.jpg

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called on Nigeria's international partners to designate the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organization.

The Minister made the call in his article, entitled "Thwarting Terrorism in Nigeria", which appeared in the US newspaper 'Washington Times' on Thursday, 12th Oct. 2017

He argues that IPOB's actions qualify the group as a terrorist organization in most jurisdictions.

On 20th Sept 2017, the Federal Government of Nigeria proscribed IPOB, which has been violently agitating for a separate state in the South-East.

"The terror lays bare their opportunism. They masquerade as a separatist movement, yet they endanger the very people they claim to represent. In reality, IPOB cares about IPOB and nothing more," Alhaji Mohammed said.

Using the words of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, such as "If they fail to give us Biafra, Somalia will look like a paradise compared to what will happen to that 'zoo' (Nigeria)." "I don't want peaceful actualisation (of Biafra)"; "We need guns and we need bullets"; "If they don't (give us Biafra), they will die," the Minister exposes IPOB as a terrorist organization like ETA in Spain, the Tamil Tigers was in Sri Lanka, and the PKK is in Turkey (all of whom are proscribed by the U.S. State Department).

He makes clear that this administration will not make the same mistake as the previous in allowing terrorists to capture land.

"The government reiterates its appeal to its international partners to proscribe the organization, and in doing so, starve it of the funds which gives it sustenance. Nigeria has just defeated one preventable terrorist insurgency. This one must not be given the chance to get a foothold," the Minister writes.

(dpa/NAN) A Norwegian football coach Ronny Deila took to desperate measures to inspire his Valerenga side in the battle against relegation, giving a crucial team talk while naked.

"A lot of people have probably seen me nude already," Deila told the Norwegian paper VG on Friday.

"We have to have fun in all the seriousness."

Valerenga won the match against Brann 2-1 two weeks and a subsequent home victory, delivered by a fully clothed Deila, has lifted the capital club five points above the top-flight drop-zone with six games remaining.

Deila has said he will not regularly appear naked as not to reduce the "surprise effect" of the motivational manoeuvrer.

That is a decision likely welcomed by his players.

"No one was really disappointed that he has not done it again since," captain Christian Grindheim said.

Why we cannot cancel privatisation of PHCN – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why his administration cannot cancel the privatisation of the power sector done by the Goodluck Jonathan administration despite its apparent failings.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the closing plenary of the Nigerian Economic Summit, NES, the president said, "The privatisation is a complex investment that government cannot wake up to cancel the contract, because there are consequences."

Mr. Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said his administration's decision to review the power sector privatisation is to open up the sector for investors with the financial capacity and technical expertise to inject fresh investments to turn the sector around.

Since November 2013 when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN successor companies were handed over to their new owners, Nigerians expected improved stable supply of electricity, with government targeting the generation capacity of 10,000 megawatts, MW.

At the closing plenary of the Nigerian Economic Summit on Thursday, Mr. Buhari said owners of privatised power companies have not been able to realize the objectives for which they acquired the assets.

"The power sector has been privatised. Investors are holding large portions of the shares. But the privatisation has not worked well, in the sense that what government sort to achieve, by way of development of the power sector, has not yet happened," the President said.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said government has decided to meet with the operators of the sector, starting with the distribution companies, DISCOs, to restructure their equity holdings.

He said the restructuring would involve the government and other private operators ceding some of their holdings to new investors to inject fresh funds and expertise to help turn the sector around in a way that would serve Nigerians.

"The process is ongoing to negotiate with the existing owners to restructure the investment to determine the right level of holding to give up for another round of sales. The equities would be sold to investors with the resources and capacity to bring in the level of investment to turn around the sector.

He described as false the privatisation of assets, which saw the defunct PHCN broken into 11 distribution companies and nine generation companies as well as one transmission company, pointing out that false buyers of the power companies were owing more than they could pay.

The situation, the president said, has been so bad that if the banks were not strong, they could have gone under from the weight of the debt from the power sector.

At the closing media briefing, Mrs. Ahmed said government was committed to reviewing the recommendations from the Summit and urgently plan towards immediate implementation of NES 23 to fast track the realization of the objectives of the National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

The summit, which had the theme: "Opportunities, Productivity & Employment: Actualising the Economic Recovery & Growth Plan," focused on five areas.

These include the need to need to redress the constraints to stabilize macro-economic environment and ensure inclusive economic growth, manufacturing, food security through agricultural development, provision of infrastructure, including railway, road and power.

Mrs. Ahmed said apart from stabilizing the macroeconomic environment, government' focus was to reduce interest rate and inflation to single digits by 2020, while ensuring that the ease of doing business initiative brought efficiencies in public service functions in its interface with the private sector.

Aso Rock Clinic: Reps to probe Jonathan, Buhari

Buhari-Jonathan-1.jpg

The House of Representatives has resolved to set up an Ad-hoc committee to investigate the past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and the President Muhammadu Buhari government over N11.1 billion State House Clinic budgets between 2015-2017.
The agreement was reached unanimously by the lawmakers sequel to a motion entitled, ''Need to investigate the deplorable condition of the State House Clinic and the alleged deductions from the salaries and allowances of the medical staff", moved by Rep. Henry Archibong, PDP, Akwa Ibom.

The Green Chambers also applauded Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, for bringing the issue to Public glare.

The lawmaker submitted that over the years, the clinic has been receiving annual budgetary allocations to procure equipment to function optimally, noted that in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Appropriation Acts, the Clinic was allocated the sums of N3.94 billion, N3.87 billion and N3.2 billion respectively, for upgrading and provision of necessary drugs and equipment.

He noted that within the 36 months, the 16 teaching hospitals got N1.424 billion; 2016: 3.333 billion and 2017: N1.943 billion collectively.

Archibong lamented that in spite of the huge budgetary allocations, the Clinic lacks necessary facilities such as syringes, drugs and equipment needed to save lives.

His words, "This is unacceptable. Less than three years of this government, this amount has been spent. It is unacceptable that the Permanent Secretary and the Minister (Minister of Health) have not resigned.

"It cannot happen in other smaller countries. Is this the change we have been waiting for? This is a question."

I approved NNPC loans not contracts, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday said he did not sign N640billion oil contracts when the President was in London on medical leave.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and  Publicity, Mr.  Laolu Akande said the VP only gave approval for financing arrangements for the Joint Ventures between the corporation and IOCs.

The statement said: "Approached by reporters after the ground-breaking multi-billion Naira historic Bonny-Bodo road project, in Bonny, Rivers State, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, explained specifically that the approvals he granted to the NNPC while he was Acting President were for financing arrangements for the Joint Ventures between the corporation and IOCs, and not approvals for contracts."

The statement quoted the VP as saying: "These were financing loans. Of course, you know what the Joint Ventures are, with the lOCs, like Chevron, that had to procure. In some cases, NNPC and their Joint Venture partners have to secure loans and they need authorization to secure those loans while the President was away. The law actually provides for those authorisations.

"So I did grant two of them and those were presidential approvals, but they are specifically for financing joint ventures and they are loans not contracts."

The SSA added: "Earlier today, I had tweeted on the same matter thus: "In response to media inquiries on the NNPC Joint Venture financing arrangements, VP Osinbajo, as Acting President, approved the recommendations after due diligence and adherence to established procedures.

"This was, of course, necessary to deal with huge backlog of unpaid cash calls which the Buhari administration inherited, and to incentivise much needed fresh investments in the oil and gas sector."

Buhari, Customs boss head for Turkey over arms smuggling

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) are billed to head for Turkey for a sideline bilateral meeting with the Turkish Customs Authority.

According to Deputy Comptoller-General, Aminu Dangaladima, the meeting is  aimed at permanently ending  deadly importation coming from Turkey.

The service last month announced the seizure of illegal of 2,671 pump action riffles from the country into Nigeria.

Owing to the seizure, Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Halal. Cakil on September 26, vowed that his country would fish out the criminals behind the shipping of illegal arms to Nigeria.

Addressing journalists  in Abuja on Friday , Dangaladima said "Let me seize this opportunity to impromptu you that we are making progress on investigation in the illegal arms importation.

"More arrests have been made and the CGC will be on the entourage of Mr. President to Turkey for sideline bilateral meeting with the Turkish Customs Authority.

"This is with the aim to permanently deal and put an end to such deadly importation coming from Turkey."

He revealed that on October 10, the NCS operatives seized 27 Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles worth N432 million.

His words: "On Wednesday 10th October, 2017, based on credible intelligence, operatives of the NCS Compliance Team went to two open car stands along Kubwa expressway in the Federal Capital Territory and evacuated 27 Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles suspected to be smuggled into the country. These vehicles have estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N432,000,000 million."

He urged the owners of the vehicles to come forward with valid Customs clearance documents otherwise they will be liable to seizure and subsequent forfeiture to the federal government in-line with laws of the land.

Dangaladima recalled that last month, Ali, while briefing on interception of 18 exotic vehicles , 18 of which were bullet proof said that the service under his leadership will enforce the powers given in the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) effectively.

He said that being in possession of smuggled items is an Offences under Section 3 of Customs and Excise Act Cap 47 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Continuing, he said that "under the on-going reforms has continued to improve in all aspect, especially in the areas of suppression of smuggling."

He insisted that "the idea that one can comply with laws of other countries and contravene Nigerian laws on arrival here can no longer be tolerated."
