Atiku vs Buhari: Mama Taraba spent N12m on ghost projects – Nigerian govt

The Nigerian government has accused Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development , Aisha Alhassan (Mama Taraba) of spending N12m on ‘familiarisation visits’ to unnamed skill acquisition centres in 2015.

This is contained in a report from the Auditor-General’s office.

The report came days after Mama Taraba declared support for the presidential ambition of former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

According to Premium Times, part of the funds was spent on November 11, 2015, the day the minister was officially sworn-in.

The report which contains observations made on the underlying accounting records of ministries, departments and other agencies of government, is the latest from the Auditor-General’s office.

It said, “an audit investigation established that the purported acclaimed appraisal visits to skill acquisition centres were never undertaken.”

The audit committee observed that: ‘‘all the attached receipts for fuelling did not indicate quantity in litres, the rate per litre, dates of purchase and vehicle number of the fuelled vehicles.

“The International hotel receipt of 23/11/15 which was issued for the hiring of a mini-bus from a hotel to unnamed project sites rendered the receipts doubtful.

”Hiring of cars to Project Sites at ridiculous rates of between N75,000.00 and N77,000.00 for two days as appeared on receipts numbers 910 of 22/11/15, 107 of 24/11/15, 0416 of 27/11/15, 531 of 25/11/15, is contrary to exercise of the due economy in line with the provision of Financial Regulation 415.”
Reports of the investigation by the audit committee revealed that part of the expenses for the verification visits was made on the day Mrs. Alhassan was sworn in.

”Receipt number 5206 of 11/11/2015, the date the Minister was sworn in by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and receipt number 11622 of 8th of November, 2015 with amount N100,000.00 respectively are not clear. The two receipts were for servicing of a vehicle two times within 3 days,’’ the report noted.

Police Service Commission explains why IGP cannot be probed for corruption

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has said it cannot probe the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for alleged bribery.
PSC’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, explained that Idris was not under the commission’s supervision by virtue of the Act establishing the commission.

He stated that the commission could only discipline or probe policemen from the rank of constable to Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

“So, the commission cannot investigate or discipline the IG,” Ani said.

A senior EFCC official also told Punch, that the anti-graft agency had no reason yet to probe Idris.

“We are currently not probing the IG and as it is, there is no reason to probe him,” he said.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Isah Misau, had recently accused Idris of extorting money, ranging from N10m to N15m, from Commissioners of Police, state mobile commanders and special protection unit commanders, for favourable postings.

Misau had also alleged that the police boss made N10bn monthly from oil companies and other private individuals who enjoy special protection from the security agency.

Buhari should be wary of people telling him to seek re- election in 2019 – Timi Frank

Former Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be careful in dealing with all those urging him to seek re-election in 2019.

He gave the advice during a phone interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ which was hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.

When asked of his views on the call for Buhari to re-contest Presidency in 2019, Frank said: “If I am the President, I should be careful of people like Mallam (Nasir) El-Rufai that are saying that the President must run or that the President should run,” he said.

“This is because the President had every right to run for presidency in 2019 if he so wishes, so there was no need to urge him to do so except there is a sinister motive behind it.

“The President is not one person people can force to do what he is not ready to do. But if the President chooses to run today, of course, as a President of Nigeria and as the President of our party, he has what they call ‘first refusal’.

“But again, has he told anybody he wants to run? The answer is ‘no’. Until the President says he wants to run, nobody can force him to do the job he is not ready to do.”

It could be recalled that governor El-Rufai’s had told journalists after his visit to the President on Friday that he and other “Buharists” were keen on ensuring that the President runs for a second term in 2019.

Obasanjo gives condition for supporting Buhari’s re-election in 2019

Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed that he would only support President Muhammadu Buhari for re-election in 2019 after a review of his performance towards the end of his current four-year term.

In an interview with BBC’s Focus on Africa on Friday, Obasanjo also rated Buhari’s administration, which is now more than two years old.
He declared that he was not disappointed in Buhari’s government.

According to him, the current president has performed well in his areas of strength, which includes fighting corruption and the Boko Haram insurgency.

“President Buhari, I have said, has not disappointed me because the areas which we knew he was strong, he has performed fairly well,” Obasanjo said.

However, Obasanjo admitted that not “everyone will be satisfied” with Buhari’s anti-corruption war.

ASUU chairman opens up on his sack by LASU

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, Isaac Oyewunmi, has denied the corruption allegation levelled against him by the authorities of the school.

The Governing Council of the institution sacked Oyewunmi alongside his deputy, Adebowale Adeyemi, for various alleged fraudulent activities on Friday .

He was accused of demanding N50,000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education, who were poised to process their results while Adeyemi-Suenu was accused of “unilaterally changing the status of students earlier asked to withdraw from the university from ‘withdraw’ to ‘good standing.”

Reacting to the incident, Oyewunmi blamed his predicament on “political moves.”

“All the allegations are false. I am not guilty although right now I have been asked to step aside while the union (ASUU) deals with it. The secretary is in the best position to react,” he told Premium Times.

“I don’t want to say much but we all know what is happening in our varsity, all they are saying is politically motivated. When the time is right, we would know, we have a robust structure in ASUU and the union has asked me not to talk on this issue so I won’t flay the union’s position.
The secretary of LASU-ASUU branch, Anthony Dansu, said the decision came as a shock.

“We are very shocked by the actions. It came to us all as a shock but the union is on top of the whole situation. At the appropriate time, the union will act,” he stated.

Buhari’s aide, Garba Shehu is a sycophant, comedian – Ezekwesili

A former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has lambasted presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, calling him a sycophant and comedian.

Ezekwesili said the president’s aide will do better as a comedian in a Nollywood movie.

She was reacting to the recent article by Garba Shehu titled ‘A President’s 32” TV’.

Ezekwesili gave her reaction in a series of tweets posted on her Twitter handle, @Obyezeks.

“@GarShehu Why not move over to Nollywood and write scripts for their movies? Can’t you folks learn that GOVERNANCE is a SERIOUS MATTER?

“Our public officials fail to#Benchmark what they spend their time on against their contemporaries in say, emerging economies. It’s tragic.

“When information comes out from the stable of the President of a country, Citizens should want to take it SERIOUS. STOP YOUR COMEDIES pls.

“The sort of Genuflecting sycophancy that you, .@GarShehu have written on the Pres @MBuhari makes it DIFFICULT for you to TELL HIM THE TRUTH.

“No one who works with a leader&spends their time “singing their praises” is of Value to them. FACE YOUR WORK, people. FACE YOUR REAL WORK!”

Corruption ‘ll Return In Full Force If Atiku Becomes President – Nigerians

It is no longer news that former vice president Atiku Abubakar is interested in contesting the 2019 presidential election.

The Turaki Adamawa has given this indication at different forum. But what do Nigerians think of his ambition to rule the country.

Many Nigerians think corruption will return in full force if perchance Alhaji Atiku Abubakar becomes president. This is the shocking revelation of a poll conducted on twitter by Kayode Ogundamisi.

Eighty-four percent of those who responded to the post: ”Poll: What comes to your mind? when you hear @atiku 2019, ” said there will be a return to corruption.

How we will block leakages of public funds in States – Presidency

The Special Adviser to President Buhari on Justice Sector reforms and the National Coordinator of Open Government Partnership (OGP), Bar. Juliet Ibekaku- Nwagwu has disclosed how leakages of public funds in states can be blocked through the effort of OGP.

She stated this in a statement delivered on her behalf by Dr. Haruna Abdullahi at the inception visit of the OGP National secretariat to Kano State.

The OGP team which was hosted at the Kano State Anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission expressed the willingness and availability of the OGP National Secretariat to support the preparation of the state government towards a formal launch of Open Government Partnership.

Already the state government has formally committed to implementing the OGP reforms in the state.

Ibekaku praised the efforts of Kano State government in pursuing policies and programs aimed at improving governance in the state.

In a letter addressed to the Co-Chair of Open Government Partnership in Nigeria and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said he was committed to implementing open contracting, open budgeting, tax transparency, improved ease of doing business, anti-corruption among others.

Dr. Abdulahi who is also the Sub-national Adviser to the OGP Secretariat on behalf of Mrs Ibekaku- Nwagwu, expressed optimism at the prospects of open government reforms in Kano State. He praised the level of infrastructure development in the state and attributed it to benefits accruing from the anti-corruption stance of government.

He expressed optimism that OGP implementation will only complement the efforts that the state government has been making.

He assured that OGP will only help institutionalise the improvements already recorded by the state.

According to him: “I have heard many things about the efforts of this government. The establishment of a state level Anti-Corruption Commission is an important mechanism to curb waste by blocking conduits from where public funds leak.

“I was in Kano a few years ago. As I arrived today, I saw a lot of infrastructural improvement which is a testimony of what happens when public resources are judiciously and efficiently utilized. That is part of what OGP is about”

Another member of the delegation, Mr. Uche Igwe, commended the focal point of OGP implementation in the State and Executive Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Magaji Muhuyi Rimingado for his courage, tenacity and professionalism.

Igwe said, “I am impressed with the level of work your Commission is doing. The story of your courage and how you have fearlessly chased corruption into the most difficult places, is public knowledge.

“Please keep it up. I am confident that if you extend that level of commitment to OGP implementation then one will expect results in improved service delivery in the state.”

In his response, Mr. Rimingado thanked the delegation for their visit and assured them that he will use his office to support the Governor, to ensure that government activities are open and that citizens understand how they are being governed.

OAP Freeze Blasts Malawian Pastor Who Customized ATM For Tithe Payment

OAP Freeze reacts to the news of controversial Malawi prophet, Shephad Bushiri who made customized ATM cards for payment of tithes.

The OAP Who criticizes popular pastors a lot said ” If you pay tithe to ANY pastor at all you are a goat, let alone to a pastor that has his face on the tithe ATM card, drives a Rolls Royce and just bought his wife a G Wagon!- FRZ”

OAP Freeze also shared series of Bible verses to support his argument by quoting Deutronomy 14:22 which says, eat your own tithe! He also quoted other scriptures..

Read his post below:

If you pay tithe to ANY pastor at all, you are a goat, let alone to a pastor that has his face on the tithe ATM card, drives a Rolls Royce and just bought his wife a G wagon!

THIS IS WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS ABOUT TITHING

Deuteronomy 14:22-23 says “Eat your own tithe.”

Deuteronomy 14:24-26
Says “Sell your tithe and buy beer. Drink the beer in the place the LORD has chosen.”

Deuteronomy 14: 26 You may spend the money (tithe) on anything you want: cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or anything you desire. You are to feast there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice with your family.

Nigerian yahoo boy pastors love to use the book of the lesser prophet ‘Malachi’, as a back up for extortion. Since many have failed to study the Bible, let me help by giving you a brief history of where Malachi 3:8-10 originated from:

In the book Nehemiah, there is a clear instruction from God about what should be done with the tithe, and only 10% of the tithe, is given to the priests and brought to the storehouse.

Nehemiah 10:38 A priest descended from Aaron is to accompany the Levites when they receive the tithes, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of the tithes up to the house of our God, to the storehouse of the treasury

Now, in the book of Malachi, God addresses the priests who failed to bring the 10% of the tithes to the storehouse, NOT YOU, THE PRIESTS!

Malachi 2:1 KJV
[1] And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.

It’s this verse that extends to Malachi 3:10 and it was meant for the priests who were robbing God, not for you!

I called those paying tithes to pastors ‘goats’ and I have biblical backing for it:

Matthew 25:33 KJV
[33] And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the ‘GOATS’ on the left.
Matthew 25:41 KJV
[41] Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, (GOATS) Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

If you neglect the poor, sick, prisoners and orphans and you give your tithes to a yahoo boy pastor, you are a big GOAT  and a special place in hellfire has been prepared for you! ~FRZ

A nursing mother was reportedly crushed to death by a truck while crossing the road at Siun axis along the Siun-Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway on Saturday.

The accident was said to have been caused by the speeding driver of the truck.

The truck, after crushing the woman who was said to be nursing a three-month baby, later hit two other men, before it came to a halt.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred around 9am and the ill-fated vehicle was a Mercedes Actros truck with number plate PKP 464 XA.
He said, “The information gathered by our operatives at the scene of the accident indicated that the driver of the truck was speeding.

“After it crushed the woman, the truck hit two other men who sustained injuries.”

Akinbiyi said the driver ran away immediately after the auto crash, while police had towed the truck to the station.

He said the body of the victim had been handed over to her family because doctors at the Olabisi Olabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, were on strike.

Atiku finally reacts to Mama Taraba’s comment on Buhari, APC, 2019 election

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the comments by Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Jumai Alhassan, concerning President Muhammadu Buhari, “couldn’t have been said any better”.

Atiku declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a coalition and that appointees have the right to keep their allegiance with whosoever they please.

Atiku, recently elevated to the Waziri of Adamawa, disclosed that even other Ministers in the cabinet have different views and opinions as regard the 2019 presidential election.

Paul Ibe, his media adviser, on Saturday insisted that what Mama Taraba said is, “the truth”.

Alhassan recently declared her support for Abubakar to emerge as Nigeria’s next president.

“And again, Baba Buhari did not tell us that he is going to run in 2019,” she said.

“Let me tell you today that if Baba said he is going to contest in 2019, I swear to Allah, I will go before him and kneel and tell him that ‘Baba I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve your government as a minister.

“But Baba just like you know I will support only Atiku because he is my godfather. If Atiku said he is going to contest.”

In a chat with DAILY POST in Abuja, Ibe said, “There’s really nothing to say. It’s like stating the obvious”.

“The Minister couldn’t have said it any better, likewise we can’t help say it any better.

“In fact, she spoke the minds of many Nigerians and don’t forget that everyone has a right of association.

“Even then president is aware of the Minister’s support for former VP Atiku; they (APC) know.

“So it should not surprise anybody because it is not a secret that the Minister has been behind us.

“Let me tell you, in the federal cabinet, other ministers have their views; they have people they support.

“People forget APC is coalition and when people from different background unite, you cannot expect stakeholders to forget their root.

“What the Minister did was an act of courage and we thank and commend her. We advise those who share similar opinion to also speak out.”

APC reveal those who ‘pressurized’ president to contest 2015 election against his wish

The Adamawa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has alleged that, “Yoruba people and some people in the North” pressured President Muhammadu Buhari into contesting in 2015.

APC Chapter made the remark while noting that it was a known fact that Buhari never wanted to run for presidency after several failed attempt.

The Organising Secretary of the Adamawa State Chapter of the APC, Ahmed Lawan made these remarks while condemning claims by Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan saying Buhari had told APC leadership that he would only seek one term in office.

Lawan, who expressed disappointment with the Minister described her comment as hasty.

He said the Minister, popularly called Mama Taraba should have waited since 2019 was just around the corner before voicing her comment.

Speaking in Yola, Adamawa State capital, Lawan said should Buhari opted against reelection in 2019, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo is a capable replacement, stressing that there is no vacancy in Aso Rock.

Lawan said, “Even if President Buhari is not going to contest in 2019, it is too hasty for her to pronounce. She should have waited until next year. If Mr. President then says he’s not going to contest, then she can say what she has said.
“This is coming earlier than expected. How does she want Mr. President to tell her he’s going to re-contest in 2019 when we are still in 2017? Even before he finally decided to contest in 2015, did Mr. President say he was going to contest? No. It was people who piled pressure on him to contest.
“We all know he said he was not going to contest [in any election again]. It was the Yoruba people and some people in the North who pressured him into contesting.
“Even if Buhari decides not to contest, we already have a credible alternative in his Vice-President, Prof. Osinbajo. So the Villa is not vacant come 2019. If Buhari is not going to contest, Osinbajo is there. If indeed we are talking about one Nigeria, then we have to display it in 2019.
“Forget about this man coming from the North and this other man coming from the South. The important thing to ask is who will better serve Nigerians. Buhari has already laid a very good foundation for Nigerians with his anti-corruption war.
“If Buhari says he can no longer continue, we already have somebody with the same mind, the same thinking like Baba Buhari. The future of Nigeria is what we should be thinking about, not to bring somebody who will only think of himself, his wives and his family.”

Benue flood: I did not divert relief materials for flood victims. -Boniface Ortese SEMA Boss

Mr Boniface Ortese, Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), has denied allegations that relief materials for victims of the recent flood in the state had been diverted.

Ortese said this on Saturday in Makurdi that the allegations were “false, malicious and calculated at tarnishing the image of the state”.

He described those peddling such rumours as “enemies of the state”, who were bent on tarnishing its good image and rubbishing the efforts of the government and that of donor agencies in mitigating the effects of the disaster.

He said, “all relief materials for the state are kept in our central store; nothing has been diverted.

“The central store is open for inspection; you can go there and see things for yourself.”

He, however, advised those using the cyber space to discredit the good works of the government to desist from it.

Ortese said that even the opposition party in the state, the PDP, has commended our efforts in managing relief materials, saying “they commended us for bringing the whole country to Benue over this flood.”

Relief materials were donated to the state since the flood disaster was first reported by the state government.

Some of the organisations that have responded to the needs of the IDPs are; NEMA, MIVA rice, Nasarawa state government, the APC, the Presidency, Nigerian Air Force, UNICEF among others.

The IDP camp commander of the Makurdi International market camp, James Iorhuna, disclosed that 4,775 households had been registered in the camp.

“We have so far registered 1,387 male children, 1,349 female children, 531 men, 642 women, 585 children under the age of five, 92 pregnant women, 115 nursing mothers and 74 physically challenged persons”.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had donated 400 mattresses to BSEMA among many other relief items for the IDPs.

Investigations showed that mattresses were given to couples with children and the elderly at the camp.

A cross section of the IDPs appealed to the government and donor agencies to donate more bedding to the camp while also appealing for permanent solution to the perennial flooding in the state.

Construction company slams Benue Dep Gov for telling the Vice President that it abandoned N2Billion Idye Flood Control project in 2004.

The Managing Director of CAD Dev Ltd Arc Tyoapine Tsegba  has slammed Benue dep Gov Engr Benson Abounu over comments his made during the recent visit of the Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo to Benue to access the flood disaster, in a press statement issued to the media, Arc Tsegba  discribed the Dep Gov's claims as untrue..read his statement below.

My attention has been drawn to a publication on page 14 of The Punch Newspaper of Thursday, 7th September, 2017 with the caption, Flood: FG to dredge River Benue, construct drainage.

In the 19 paragraph report, paragraphs 17 and 18 are a complete misrepresentation of facts that portray my company, CAD Development Limited and my person in negative light before the Benue community and even the entire nation.

According to the report, “This project started in 2004 under former governor George Akume, when I was Commissioner for Water Resources but could not be completed which is evident in what you are seeing today in Benue State…The Benue Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu, during the inspection told the Vice President that the contract for the construction of the Idye drainage was awarded to CAD (sic)construction company, Abuja for N2 billion. He went on “the company abandoned the project after only about N750 million naira was expended on it”.

To put the records straight, the contract for the construction of the said drainage was awarded to CAD Development Limited by the George Akume administration in 2002 and not in 2004 as reported. The actual contract sum of the project was 700 million naira and not 2 billion naira as alleged.

Even though we are aware that the entire seven hundred million naira was released by the federal Government for the project, CAD Devt Ltd has been paid about four hundred and sixty (460) million naira only. The balance is still with the Benue State Government. The 460 million naira CAD Devt Ltd received represents about 66% of the total project cost. On our part, we have executed about 61% of the work and still have a valuation certificate running into millions of naira that has remained unpaid till date.

We are therefore embarrassed by the accusation that CAD Devt Ltd abandoned the contract after collecting 750 million naira for the job. This is not true. When the news came out, to prove our innocence in the matter, we made contact with His Excellency the Deputy Governor of Benue State Engr Benson Abounu who was credited with making the statement and who incidentally happened to be the Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment during the George Akume administration and who signed the agreement on behalf of the Benue state government when the contract was awarded. But the Deputy Governor vehemently disowned the report.

We identify with and greatly feel the pains of the flood victims. We are also victims as we have suffered colossal loses as a result of the flood. The entire premises of CAD Devt Ltd, machineries and equipment have been submerged in water with damages running into millions of naira.

It is therefore unfair at this very trying period of our lives and wicked to infer, even remotely, that the plight of the hundreds of families now in despair as a result of the flood is because of the negligence or dishonesty of CAD Development Limited.

We advise that if the Benue State Government is really desirous of mitigating this disaster, she need not look far. We pledge our availability to assist in whatever way necessary that would help remedy the situation and bring respite to our people.

We therefore urge the public to regard the statement accusing CAD Development Limited of collecting 750 million naira and abandoning the Idye River Basin drainage contract as false and completely without substance but only intended to tarnish our hard-earned reputation.

Benue state government and FERMA lay claim to rehabilitated Mkd-Lafia-ABJ expressway.

The recent Makurdi flood that caused havoc in the state also caused the collapse of a portion of Mkd-Lafia- Abuja way.
This collapse caused accidents and the death of one person and was even causing  terrible traffic grid lock on the expressway.

Benue state  Gov. Samuel Ortom quickly directed the Ministry of Works and CGGC company to fix the bad portion, the Hon Commissioner for works even shared pictures of equipments on site and how work had began..same Commisioner gave an update shortly after work was completed.

And then the Federal Roads Management Agency (FERMA) came up with new claims on Channels TV,taking credit for the job and fixed its signpost at the site.

Now who actually fixed that portion, is it the state government or FERMA?

When contacted ,Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Terver Akase in his response said,

Mimi, the important thing is that the portion of the Makurdi - Lafia road which collapsed is now in good condition. Benue State Government repaired that portion of the road and it did so without any pride. Governor Samuel Ortom directed the state Ministry of Works to immediately fix the failed part of the road to enable the people of Benue and other Nigerians have smooth movement. There is nothing wrong in FERMA planting their signpost where the road got bad but has now been fixed by Benue State Government. After all, the job of rehabilitating federal roads such as the Makurdi - Lafia road is theirs. Many thanks.

The suspects were arrested after one of their . Rita reportedly does all sorts of inhumance things to when she does not make enough money for a day. She allegedly flogs and forced hot boiling ring into the victim's vaginal on such occasions.

The 19-years old was recruited from Gwarimpa, Abuja by her ex-boyfriend Ozigi Abdulkarim, Ngozi Stella Ani and Princewill James for onward transfer to Rita Ani in Abu Dhabi UAE. They prepared her travel documents, took her to Ogbomoso, Oyo State where fetish oath was administered on her before the journey.

Appearing before the court, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the 10 counts charge proffered against them. Counsel to Rita and the elder sister Ngozi did not file a formal application for bail; hence the Presiding Judge ordered that they be remanded in prison custody.

The case was subsequently adjourned to Wednesday13th September, 2017 for hearing.

20 Healthy Living Tips You Need To Know

Looking for a healthy living cheat sheet? Our resident health expert serves up her 20 health and nutrition tips that everyone should know. Enjoy!

1. Non-fat or “skim milk” has a surprisingly high amount of sugar. Most brands have about 12 grams per cup – this is almost half the amount of total sugar that is recommended you ingest each day!

2. When you eat protein, you lose 20-30% of those calories to digestion. This means if you eat 100 calories of protein, you only absorb about 70 of those calories.

3. Wheat raises your blood sugar higher and faster than any other carbohydrate including table sugar.

4. Matcha is an excellent source of antioxidants, or “polyphenols,” which protect the body from harmful free-radicals and cellular damage.

5. Cold pressed juice is considered to be more nutrient dense compared to traditional centrifuged juice. This is because centrifugal juicers generate heat which can destroy enzymes, and also force in air which can compromise nutrients.

6. Cooking tomatoes drastically increases its lycopene content. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that decreases risk of heart disease and cancer.

7. Cheeses with the lowest amount of lactose are those that have aged the longest. The lower the lactose, the lower the chance of stomach upset from intolerance to lactose.

8. Fiber slows down digestion and makes you feel fuller longer. Healthy adults should aim or 25 grams of fiber per day.

9. Tuna is an excellent source of Vitamin B12, selenium, Vitamin B3 (niacin), and protein - about 20 grams of protein per 3 oz serving.

10. Fish with lowest amounts of mercury include salmon, black sea bass, scallop, shrimp, skate, tilapia, cod, oyster, and crab.

11. Getting enough magnesium may help prevent migraine headaches. Good sources of magnesium include almonds, spinach, and avocado.

12. Foods that are an even greater source of potassium than bananas include sweet potatoes, white potatoes, beets, and butternut squash.

13. Vitamin C helps to boost your immune function and protects against free radical damage. Good sources of Vitamin C include oranges, red peppers, and broccoli.

14. If you are sensitive to dairy products but you love butter, try clarified butter which is pure butterfat with the milk solids removed.

15. Tropical fruits are high in sugar. These include bananas, mangoes, and pineapples. Stick to a ½ cup serving when eating this type of high sugar fruit.

16. The best source of Vitamin D comes from the sun. The second best source is a supplement, and the third and lowest source are foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and beef liver.

17. An 8 oz cup of coffee can have between 95-200mg of caffeine. It is recommended to not exceed 400mg of caffeine per day for most individuals.

18. Studies have found that just short bursts of exercise during the day can help with attention and focus. Aim for a fifteen minute walk at lunch to increase your energy for the afternoon.

19. Clutter can trigger your stress response. Avoid clutter in key areas such as your desk, your car, and in your bedroom.

20. A negative emotional state can express itself on your face as breakouts, dullness, and wrinkles. Practice being in the present for a happier emotional state and a better complexion.

Tit for tat or Daboh for Tarka

Idris-Misau

Whistle blowing has now become a lucrative side-kick in Nigeria. But it didn’t start yesterday; or the day before. It was always there even when financial inducements were not attached to whistle blowing. Most of whistle blowing comes from a disgruntled underling who has an inside knowledge of the goings on within an organisation.

He might even be an active participant who has been short-changed in a deal. Or someone who hates the guts of a tight fisted, mean spirited boss. He may, or may not benefit financially from the whistle blowing since revenge is his greater reward. Very few whistle blowers are altruistic—from Julian Assange, the world’s most famous whistle blower to the small clerk in a ministry who reports on his boss. Their motives are usually centred around money, power, revenge and yes, mischief.

Back in the 70s, there was a celebrated case that involved Joseph Tarka, an influential and flamboyant politician from the then Middle-belt now known as the North Central zone and Godwin Daboh, a debonair Insurance Executive from the same zone. Daboh was a socialite. A smooth, suave operator whom many would describe as a deal maker and womaniser.

Tarka was a socialite as well; but of a different hue. He was more known as the colourful but dogged fighter for the political independence of the Middle-belt region. For this, he earned a lot of respect and acclaim across the country. For this, he became a powerful minister representing his area in the Gowon administration. You can therefore imagine the interest it generated when his kinsman accused him of corruption.

Allegations and suggestions of corruption were not novel at that stage of the Gowon administration. But it was a military regime and therefore, the accusations were muffled. This time, the details, the specifics and the high profile of the accuser and the accused got the nation salivating. The media on its part was relentless; devoting yards of newsprint to the drama. The tit for tat was interesting while it lasted as the two erstwhile friends threw mud at each other.

At the end of the day, Tarka, the dogged fighter of many political battles, lost this corruption battle and had to throw in the towel. Till today, the term ‘if you Tarka me, I will Daboh you’ which can mean ‘if you dare me, I will spill the beans’ has found its way to the nation’s lexicon. At best, it is a test of secrecy and loyalty among thieves. At worst, a form of blackmail. In this particular whistle blowing episode, few people doubted the complicity of Daboh. But the message was so juicy that they could afford to ignore the messenger.

Fast forward to 2017, and you find a similar scenario playing itself out where two personalities from the same professional constituency who have dirty dossiers on each other are doing Tarka and Daboh in the market place. Missau is a Senator. He is also an ex policeman. He has accused the nation’s top cop of corruption. He has alleged that monetary considerations play a significant part in the postings and promotions that the Inspector General of Police makes.

Not done, he has also accused the IG and the police topmost hierarchy of pocketing some of the money big corporations pay to have police officers assigned to them. What makes these allegations weighty is that they are not made by a run of the mill whistle blower. By virtue of his past training and profession as a law enforcer and current position as a law maker, his allegations should be taken a hell of a lot more seriously than they are being taken by government.

The police on their part responded by attacking the messenger and accusing him of forgery and desertion. The police are not embarrassed by the fact that the incidence of desertion happened about seven years ago. And if it was true, why did the nation’s crime fighting force not investigate a crime that happened right under their nose? Why did they allow an alleged forger and a deserter to contest an election into the country’s highest law making body? This accusation is in itself an indictment on the competence and inner working of the police system.

But what is even more puzzling is the silence and acquiescence of the populace. After all, it was the force of public opinion, managed by the press, which forced an otherwise popular Tarka out of public office. Why is the same public not asking for an investigation into these allegations at the very least? Or has corruption fatigue set in? To be sure, this is not the first time the police force is whistle blowing against itself at the highest level.

A mere couple of years ago, a sitting IG had accused his predecessor of going away with different ranges of cars as if he wanted to set up a car mart. If the matter was ever investigated, the public is yet to be made aware of its outcome. In fact, every IG since the days of Tafa Balogun has been accused of one form of malfeasance or the other.

The accusations have all died a natural death because nobody has thought it necessary to inject some accountability and transparency into the police system and the system itself is unwilling, IG after IG, to cleanse itself from the inside. And the public has been tepid at best in asking for accountability and probity. The Nigerian Police is often said to be under funded which supposes that every penny should be stretched.

Yet major financial scandals—from pension funds to contract scams—are linked to previous administrations. The officers complain of poor remunerations, yet their top officers retire into very comfortable, if not opulent live styles. The public perception which is that the police is corrupt is not helped by the recent finding of the police being the most corrupt institution in the country ahead of the judiciary. That finding, made by an international body, should have made the public to demand an overhaul in the way the police does its thing.

Clearly something has to be done to sanitise the police system and cleanse its image. For the sake of the country. For the sake of the Police Force itself, and its role as a dispenser of justice. One way to start is to investigate the allegations of Senator Isah Missau. The allegation of desertion and forgery against the Senator should also not be swept under the carpet. Setting up a high powered investigative panel to probe these allegations will convince the doubters that the country is indeed serious about its fight against corruption.

I’m still in love with Flavour –Anna Banner

Former beauty queen, Anna Banner in an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, says she was still in love with Flavour, even if he has yet to marry her after having a child for him.

“I couldn’t have purposely got pregnant because I wanted to hook a star. I was already a star too. I wasn’t looking for fame; I was even running away from fame.
But I got pregnant for somebody I really loved. It wasn’t planned. It was my mistake but I wouldn’t call my child a mistake. I was careless. But I thank God it happened with a man who I loved and who didn’t turn his back on me.

“When you love someone, it is hard to fall out. You cannot fall in love today and fall out of love tomorrow. Love is strong. Before you tell somebody you love him, you have to be sure. Flavour was the first man I fell in love with. I still love him as the beautiful soul he has and as the father of my child. I don’t know what the future holds but we are just taking things one step at a time.”

She got pregnant after she featured in Flavour’s Golibe video but Anna said her relationship with the singer had nothing to do with the video.

“Some people have got it twisted.  It wasn’t because of the video that I had a child for him. We didn’t start dating because of the video either. It just happened and it happened.”

And as Flavour has another baby mama, Sandra Okagbue, and who he has yet to tie the knots with either, Anna said she is not jealous of the other woman in his life.

“Why should I be jealous? We are all humans but what will be will be. If you get jealous today, where will it lead you to? All I want is for my child to be happy.”

Recalling how she felt when she found out she was pregnant, the young lady said she was devastated.

“I was demoralised. I was finished! I was frustrated! My parents were disgusted at my sight. It was my cross, so I had to carry it. I decided I was going to keep the baby even if I wasn’t married. It turned out to be the best decision I have made. I am not saying it is good to get pregnant at a young age and have a baby but whatever choices you make, you need to know there are consequences and you have to get ready to face the consequences. I was ready to face mine and I will not advise anybody to get pregnant at a young age. But if you get pregnant, abortion is not the next step.”

Probably because of her experience in life, Anna said she intends to set up a foundation in future.

“I am going to have a foundation and I hope it turns out the way I want. It is about empowering young girls just like me not to give up. A lot of young girls got pregnant at a young age just like me and they gave up. I just want to encourage them that this is not the end of the world; you can do so many things. It is never late to go back to school. Age is just a number, your child will grow up to love and appreciate you. Even if it is not school, learn how to do something, empower yourself.”

LASG set to deploy armed guards to schools across the state

The Lagos State Government on Friday announced that it will deploy armed men to public schools across the state ahead of the state of a new academic session.

The information was disclosed at a meeting with the Head Teachers of primary schools and Principals of secondary schools in the state by the Deputy Gov., Dr Idiat Adebule, who also doubles as the Commissioner for Education.

Adebule said that the issue of security had been the state government’s point of discussion since schools vacated on July 11.

”Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the deployment of officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as day and night guards in our schools.

”And since the Federal Government has approved arms-bearing for officers of NSCDC, they will be complementing the police and other security agencies in tackling insecurity in our public schools, especially the schools located in the riverine and coastal areas.

”The government has also completed the construction of a watchtower with alarm systems at the Lagos Model College, Igbonla, Epe.

”Two Hilux vehicles have been deployed to the police by the Ministry of Education for regular and effective patrol in Epe and Badagry areas. More will still be deployed to other areas.

”These are the various strategies the state government has been putting in place to ensure that our schools are ready and safe for resumption on Monday, Sept. 11, ” she said.

Adebule said that renovation works and provision of benches and desks had been completed in some schools, while works were still ongoing in some others.

She said there was an improvement from the state’s previous year’s West African Examination Council (WAEC) results, as the performance rate was 66 per cent, this year.

”I really commend our teachers in the state for their dedication and commitment to shaping and moulding our students to record good performances, as well as become responsible and successful adults of tomorrow.

”I will still call on you to do more as you resume on Monday by effectively planning and coordinating teaching and learning processes for the 2017/2018 academic year.

”It is unfortunate that most parents have left the role of child upbringing to the teachers.

”I want to beg you to continue to do your best as Governor Ambode has assured us that he will continue to hugely invest on Education so that the sector can meet international standards, ” Adebule said.

Reading out security tips to the school managers, Mr Imohimi Edgal, Acting Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, said that partnership with local communities was key to creating safer schools for learning and development.

Edgal urged head teachers and principals of schools to familiarise themselves with the people in the community and the police stations, to enhance information and intelligence gathering, as well as boost community policing.

”Achieving safety in our schools requires the collective efforts of all. The police will continue to work very hard to ensure that all schools are protected and safe for our students,” he added.

Why my Nigerian father never said goodbye .Camilla Balshaw.

Camilla Balshaw: ‘Why would I want to find a man who had no hand in my upbringing and whose face I could barely remember?’ Photograph: Si Barber for the Guardian

I had been warned by my cousin about the strange telephone habits of Nigerians so, as I prepared to speak to my father for the first time in 30 years, I thought I was ready. But I wasn’t. The conversation lasted four minutes. Not the way I had expected to strike up a relationship with the man I had last seen when I was 10.

My memories of my father are sketchy. I have no photographs of him, but I remember he was tall and thin and always wore expensive cologne. He smoked, too, a forgotten brand now relegated to empty packets on eBay.

My parents had met in London in the early 60s. They were part of the new wave of arrivals from India, Pakistan, Africa and the Caribbean. London swelled with a Commonwealth population who came to work and build new lives.

My father had come to study engineering. He met my mother, a trainee nurse, and swept her off her feet. My grandmother simply couldn’t understand why she insisted on a relationship with a Nigerian and not a “nice Caribbean gentleman”.

My parents’ union became increasingly fraught thanks to my father’s somewhat laissez-faire attitude to his duties as a husband. He had come from a wealthy family in Nigeria. His mother, a formidable businesswoman, spoiled and indulged him. Once in England, he was easily intoxicated and seduced by the brights lights, parties, whiskey and, whisper it, probably, other women. Engineering was abandoned and, regardless of a growing family, he showed no sign of succumbing to domestic life. He took a series of meaningless jobs and continued his playboy lifestyle.

Camilla Balshaw’s father.

Years of unhappiness and bitterness festered and finally exploded into an acrimonious parting. My mother gained custody of me and my siblings. She became a single woman with three children and no financial help from my father. After a few visits to London to see him, and occasional shopping sprees to Marks & Spencer (the 70s Nigerian shopper’s paradise), he disappeared. We were told that he had probably gone back to Nigeria.

I never saw him again.

We were brought up with a daily mantra from our mother to “never, ever marry a Nigerian”. After all she had been through, you couldn’t blame her.

I suppressed my African heritage and fully embraced the Jamaican. My father was a waste of space. In the early 80s, I wanted limited association with Nigeria. Jamaica was cool. They had reggae, a killer cricket team and lovely sounding patois. Nigeria was too foreign and they wore strange headwraps and spoke in sing-song dialects that I couldn’t understand. Plus, I had a fierce loyalty to my mother. She had brought us up single-handedly and done a very fine job. Why would I want to find a man who had no hand in my upbringing and whose face I could barely remember?

As the years and decades passed, there was still no contact, until a phone call changed everything. It was a cousin. Cousin? I had no sense of a wider family of cousins, aunts or uncles.

This cousin told me he had managed to track me down on the orders of the family in Nigeria. He was a professor, lived in Oxfordshire and made frequent visits to Nigeria. He told me I had a father who was very much alive and a host of family members in Abuja who were desperate to contact me. Apparently, the search had started years ago. My father had tried the Salvation Army with no results. Family members had tried too, until, bingo, they had tracked me down through social media.

When I eventually met my cousin, he handed me a letter; it was from my father. It was simple and short. The word “sorry” dominated each paragraph. At first I did nothing. I didn’t reply. I didn’t tell my mother he had made contact, not at first. It felt disloyal. I left his letter in a drawer for months but continued to meet my UK cousin. He was full of stories of Nigeria, its rich history and our large family tree. I wanted to know more about them. They had beautiful names and I couldn’t blame them for my father’s mistakes.

I wrote back to him. I saw it as an opportunity to let off steam and berate him for being a pretty lousy husband and father. He wrote again, apologetic, regretful and asked for forgiveness. Something thawed. I forgave him. We arranged a phone call.

At this point, my cousin in Oxfordshire gave me the warning about Nigerians and their telephone habits. My initial thought was: generators. I knew there were frequent blackouts and assumed this would affect our call as would the amount of credit on his phone.

Our first call came and there were no proclamations of long-lost love on either side. The conversation was incredibly formal. He asked about my health, my family’s health, my husband’s health. I asked about his health. He was 82 after all. Four minutes and the call was over.

What perplexed me most was the lack of questioning on his part and at the end of the call he said, “OK”, and the phone went down. He didn’t end the conversation with “goodbye”, which I thought incredibly rude.

We went through the same three-question telephone ritual a couple of times. I knew he had an interest in politics so I interspersed our chat with added comments on Theresa May and the weather. I asked questions. He didn’t. He would say, “OK” and midway through my own “goodbye” the phone went down firmly. We continued to call each other and on each occasion I was left with the receiver in my hand, incredulous at the brutal end of our conversation.

In one call, I mentioned I would visit him in Nigeria. It was a deviation from the three-question script. “When, when?” he said. I blurted out “April” without thinking. This was never going to work it was already early March. Why had I said April of all months?

I called a few days after this and told him April was out of the question and I hoped to visit in October.

“Thank God,” he said.

My father spoke Igbo, English, Yoruba and Hausa. I had learned from a phrasebook the Yoruba for “goodbye” “O da dor”. My intention on our next call was to impress him with my rudimentary attempt. I’d written him a letter too. It asked, “Why do you never say goodbye at the end of a call?”

I never got the chance to practise my Yoruba or get a reply to my letter. The phone call came in May. My father had died. A stroke. He was 83.

And then I got an invitation from another cousin to come over and meet all the family. They had been waiting, she told me. She put the phone down and didn’t say goodbye.

I made the trip to Nigeria and discovered Abuja – a green, wide-spaced, international, vibrant, youthful city, full of coffee shops (yes, Africa has them, too). I met a whole new family of aunts, cousins and uncles.

In Abuja, I learned that my name, which I had always thought was very English and not Nigerian-sounding at all, is quite a popular name. Its roots are in Arabic and it is spelt Kamilah or Kamilaat. My family were all solidly middle-class professionals with law degrees and architectural practices; one or two were presidents of oil companies, and a cousin held a seat in the Nigerian senate – quite an achievement for a woman.

They spoke fondly about my father, or Uncle as he was known by all the family. They told me he was a quiet, thoughtful presence, always elegantly dressed, who never forgot birthdays and smelled of cologne.

I asked one of my cousins about his phone habits. “My dad never said goodbye. Why was that?”

“Sometimes we don’t,” she said matter-of-factly. “Everything has been said already.”

And I suppose it had.

Hurricane Irma makes landfall in Cuba as Category 5

Hurricane Irma strengthened and made landfall in Cuba on Friday as a Category 5 storm, as millions of Florida residents were ordered to evacuate after the storm killed 21 people in the eastern Caribbean and left catastrophic destruction in its wake. Irma struck Camaguey Archipelago with 160 mph (260 kph) winds late on Friday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an advisory. Category 5 is the NHC’s most powerful designation.

Irma, one of the fiercest Atlantic storms in a century, was expected to hit Florida on Sunday morning, bringing massive damage from wind and flooding to the fourth-largest state by population. The scenes along Cuba’s north central coast were gradually coming to resemble the horrors of those of other Caribbean islands over the last week as Irma barreled in for a direct hit at Ciego de Avila province around midnight.
