A 38-year-old pregnant woman, Mwuese Manger of Gwer Local Government
Area of Benue State in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, was on Tuesday
remanded at the Federal Prisons over the alleged killing of an
eight-year-old boy.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Ewoh, told
the Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court that one Akaa Agbe reported at the
Divisional Police Headquarters, Aliade, that his son, Aondover
Damatim,had been murdered. Ewoh said that Agbe told the police that the
accused took the boy, who was staying with his grandmother
in Howe village to the Uloho stream in the same village, killed him and threw his corpse into the stream.
According
to the prosecutor, the villagers who mobilised themselves and conducted
a search, found his corpse in the stream. He said that the accused was
arrested. and during police investigation, she admitted committing the
crime, which contravened Section 222 of the Penal Code.
The accused’s plea, was however, not taken for lack of jurisdiction.
The
prosecution asked for another date, saying that investigation was still
in progress.The Chief Magistrate, Dan Ogo, adjourned the matter till
May 16 for further mention.
Meanwhile, the accused, who spoke
after the court session, said she did not kill the boy. She said that
the police forced her to admit to the crime.
She, however, admitted that she went to the stream with the deceased but left him there after fetching her own water.
“Why would anyone accuse me of killing the boy when I have no reason to do so? Manger asked.’’
