On African Designers and Online Shopping

Something that could fill the wide dearth between African designers and their customers is online shopping. With the commendable coverage and exposure African fashion has seen in the past couple of years, online shopping seems like the next big leap for African designers. A few countries like South Africa have fashion designers that are definitely forerunners in maximising the benefits of online shopping in Africa.
Online stores like myasho and fashion-conscience have done a fine job of bringing African and African inspired fashion a little closer to our door steps. Bless them and the burgeoning number of designers launching online stores. There’s a natural high we all get from walking through the shop doors straddling a dozen shopping bags and trying to look effortlessly chic while doing it. An all too familiar high. And online shopping doesn’t forestall the glory of good ol’ in-store shopping; it just makes things more accessible especially for people with busy schedules.
The possibilities are endless with African designers and online shopping. The most obvious one being accessibility! Not just for Africans but globally. African design will go beyond the shores of Africa to the farthest reaches of the universe. Oh my! (p.s. I am not a shopaholic) In anticipation, we pledge allegiance to the future of online shopping and African designers.
Whatever it is shopping online is a culture that should be embraced and here are some pointers for shopping online: know your correct sizes, buy only from sites with secure payment options and beware of cheap knock offs so someone doesn’t sell you short. How would you know? For one, those too good to be true prices in bright red banners plastered on the walls of your favourite sites are just that, too good to be true. Another thing, when your eye catches that marvellous dress, and sun-kissed angels start singing the ‘Halelujah’ chorus bathed in golden light, if you have enough money, buy it. Chances are the next time you visit the website, it will be gone!!!
What is hampering the growing culture of online shopping in Africa? Rather try on pieces before buying?! Or the idea of buying online just doesn’t do it for you? A lack of credit/debit card culture? Too many online scams and internet fraud? Or you just like good old fashioned shopping? What do African designers stand to gain/lose from online shopping?

Like Mother Like Daughter.Deola Sagoe's Daughters Unveil CLAN Clothingline.

Clan is a new fashion label with a fresh and irreverent style, for edgy, style-conscious girls and guys who like to stay ahead of the fashion curve. Sisters, Teni, Aba and Tiwa Sagoe, daughters to Deola Sagoe of the eponymous and legendary fashion house, have channelled their collective fashion heritage to bring their own vision to the fore.

The label is targeted at the teenage to thirties demographic, offering dynamic fashion that’s easily accessible, yet savvy and distinct. The current line offers separates from bra-lets, high waisted print shorts and Ankara bustiers to casual lounge dresses and swim wear, as well as wardrobe staples such as chiffon shirts and dainty lace skirts for the free-spirited and young at heart. The foundation for many of the girl’s creations is the Deola Sagoe- DEO jeans range, which is the perfect match to Clan tops and bra-lets. The overall look is super-stylish, an essential resource for what the cool girls and guys are going to be wearing next…

It may seem obvious to see the daughters of Deola Sagoe finding their way into the fashion industry. Not so if you ask the girls, the eldest of whom is just 20. Each has her own distinct career path marked out, and surprisingly none has chosen to be a fashion designer. But it must be in the blood as Clan has grown organically, taking on a life of it’s own, forging its way into being as if by some pre-destined plan. As the brand name implies Clan speaks to the power of family, the magic that comes out of being part of a bigger picture, whilst still being unique and different, and having the courage to experiment that’s always fantastic to watch.

On the 13th of August 2011, Clan will launch with their first fashion show, held at the Deola Sagoe Flagship store in VI. In keeping with the ideology of collaboration and togetherness the show is being put together by the girls, a committee of friends, and invested in by sponsors who have been charmed by what they have seen of the girl’s talent.

Grey Goose and Bacardi, product brands marketed in Nigerian by GDN, are proudly sponsoring the event, so too internationally acclaimed architect Kunle Adeyemi of NLE, who is taking time out of his busy schedule to redesign the space and ambiance of the Deola Sagoe flagship store. Hosting the event is Q Events, a subsidiary of Quintessentially Nigeria, the well known luxury lifestyle management company.

Gay Nigerian Chika Nwafor Divorces German Husband.(special report from stella's blog)

Mr Schwarz(please bend your neck to view pic)

The gay marriage which was contracted in 2008 between Nigerian born chika valentine nwafor and German marc schwarz has ended.
The two men who recently visited nigeria as a couple to see chikas people and understand his lifestlye are no longer in love.
(The couple also received a lot of bashing recently when the story i did on them in Encomium magazine was published online)
Mr chika wrote something spectacular on his blog and I contacted him to find out what was wrong and he opened up sounding very hurt and betrayed.
this is what he told me
''Finally i am free but still a close friend to marc but i live on my own now''
i nicely asked what happened and he explains further.
''Yes I moved out as I can't stand his cheating anymore and I moved out with our son Boris. we are finally signing our divorce by Wednesday july 27,2011.But we are still friends and I need my life to cope and bring my son up well
suprised i asked again
''But divorce only comes up after two years of seperation''
he tells me
''Am sorry its his profession and he chose it how I want it ''
''so what are you getting from the divorce chika?''
''i am getting Where i am living now with my son Boris which is a 3 bedroom flat , my car, my shop, Boris' up keep and him paying me for the next 6 months.Isn't that ok for me? Let him continue f***king around as I don't care anymore''.
i asked more questions and he continues
''Am single and seriously searching for a honest ,sincere and genuine one and not those that will only lay me on bed and take advantage of me or start demanding money like Nigerian guys are doing.i saw it coming and The fact is that am not shocked at all neither does he even care but the best of it is am on my own once again.my son is all the happiness I have ''
''chika what if marc begs you to make up before you sign the divorce paper''?
chika tells me
'' Even if Marc begs i am sorry I don't want anymore,i am through with him.
I Have taken the decision to move on and this time I think I will settle with a Nigerian who stays close to me here(stuutgart) he seems to care and loves me''
''Chika do you want to marry the Nigerian man now?''
''Well I don't need marriage again dear sister, we can be lovers and not marriage because I don't want any man to dictate for me and my son again
All I need is a soul companion who will always love me for who I am and not mess up with my feelings as all men need is to lay me on bed and soon take off after satisfying themselves but I've learnt my lession and I don't need marriage again so when things start going bad I will bear it and stand on my feet''
''So marc was bossing you around?''
''Sure marc used to order me around, though he loves me but still that Ego in him I hate but it is all in the past now as far as am concernd.the sister said I should forgive but I said its over, at least let him respect me for once.I have feelings and am a human being and not an animal or object of sex or his sex toy which he uses 3times every night and even upon that still has the guts to bring some bitch man to my bedroom.
He sees some other guys he's cooling off with. as for me I have admirers but still don't want anyone around me now''.
And then i round up by telling chika ''eyaah sorry oh''
and he replies''why sorry?i am okay the way i am,at least no one will lay on me every night,no more pains all over my body after every three rounds of sex every night''.
Shocked i asked him''why is sex painful for you chika?''
His response?..''well its not painful, what is painful is seeing the man whom you know just slept with someone else still come to climb you, that hurts''
The couple have an almost 11month old son they adopted from America and they named him boris chika schwarz.
I am at a loss for words, like i said before concerning the gay issue,i am not homophobic but i am yet to understand how two men can love each other and swear for better for worse.
Heres hoping Chika takes out time to heal and care for his son boris!

One of America’s legendary female vocalists, Chante Moore is set to visit Lagos for a world class charity concert. The event will also feature some of Nigerias finest musicians including R&B crooner, Banky W and Nigerian young sensation, WizKid.

The charity concert is organized in support of the True Health Foundation for the treatment of acute renal failure. The concert is scheduled for the Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos on August 20.

Chanté Moore, the daughter of a minister, grew up on gospel music and albums by George Duke and Lee Ritenour, sometimes applying her lyrics to their music.
