Nigerian Journalists Raise Funds To Build Secretariat, Institute.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Thursday night raised during a dinner more than US$660,000 out of the US$6.5 million required for the construction of its secretariat and the International Institute of Journalism.
Speaking at the occasion, Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo expressed the readiness of the government to support and assist NUJ in the realization of its dream of having a befitting National Secretariat in Abuja.
He noted with concern that the Union, one of the first trade unions to move its headquarters from Lagos to Abuja, was yet to acquire a befitting structure in the capital.
He, therefore, called on wealthy individuals and organizations to donate generously towards the realization of the NUJ’s dream .
"My charge to the union is that it must not lose focus of this drive to reposition this noble profession,’’ he said.
Sambo congratulated the Union on the recent passage into law of the Freedom Of Information (FOI) bill, while expressing the hope that the law would enhance the practice of journalism in Nigeria.
NUJ president Alhaji Mohammed Garba narrated the challenges of the Union since it was evicted from the premises it occupied since 1992 when it moved to Abuja.
I must commend my Chairman for this giant stride by the time this structure is completed ,we journalists in Nigeria will smile.Abeg Oga Smart where you dey?come and see what Mohammed is doing.

Election Tribunal Can Declare Poll Winner, Court Rules.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday nullified Section 140 (2) of the Electoral Act that barred election tribunals from declaring as winners those who successfully prove their petitions.
The Section only allowed the tribunals and the courts to order rerun ballots.
But Justice Okechukwu Okeke held that the amendment to the Electoral Act done by the National Assembly (NASS) in that regard is null and void, as it contravenes the powers given to the courts by the Constitution.
Okeke came to the conclusion while delivering judgement in a suit filed by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) challenging the legality of some Sections of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended.

Reuben Abati To Replace Ima Niboro.

The Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Guardian (Nigeria), Rueben Abati, has crossed the street, professionally, to become the voice of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Mr. Abati's position as Senior Special Adviser On Communication  is expected to be announced early next week When Mr. Jonathan returns from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where he is attending a meeting of the African Union until the weekend.
When announced, Mr. Abati, who recently wrote a 10-part article on the Jonathan presidency, will replace Ima Niboro, the abrasive and often angry Special Adviser to Mr. Jonathan.  Presidency sources told Saharareporters today that Mr. Niboro was yet to be informed of his exit.  Only last week, the outgoing Senior Special Adviser was said to have been all over the presidential villa threatening to “re-organize” his office.
Mr. Abati is a long-running columnist with The Guardian, but his substantive job was to chair the Editorial Board and the editorial pages.  In recent years, his star has dimmed professionally on account of allegations of corruption, including his name being found on a list of senior Nigerian journalists who accepted big plots of lands in Abuja from the Yar'Adua government.  Neither Mr. Abati nor The Guardian denied that allegation.
