Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo Plagiarizes President Bush’s Speech

The  newly sworn-in President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo is enmeshed in a plagiarism scandal as it appears portions of his inaugural speech at the Independence Square on January 7, 2017, was lifted from inaugural speeches delivered by former US presidents, George Bush and Bill Clinton.

President Akufo-Addo while addressing the gathering urged citizens to be active partakers in the running of the country.

“I ask you to be citizens: citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens building your communities and our nation. Let us work until the work is done,” he said.

A quick check through the Internet reveals that the above statement is contained in George Bush’s 2001 inaugural speech.

Another part of the speech where Nana Addo urged Ghanaians to believe in their strength in tackling challenges, was also lifted from Bill Clinton’s 1993 inaugural speech. Checks reveal that the only difference in the statement was the replacement of ‘Americans’ with ‘Ghanaians’.

“Though our challenges are fearsome, so are our strengths. Ghanaians have ever been a restless, questing, hopeful people…”

In a similar development, recall that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari was recently involved in a plagiarism scandal where it was discovered that he plagiarised portions of a 2008 speech by US President Barack Obama. After much public outrage, Buhari apologised.

Governor Wike reacts to dismissal of his 6 police details

Governor Nyesom Wike led Rivers State government has described as saddened the decision of the Nigeria Police to dismiss six police officers.

In a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Austin Tam-George, and issued on Friday night, the government claimed that the police officers were subjected to a secret and unfair trial, “on totally fictitious charges of professional misconduct, during the rerun elections in Rivers State on the 10th of December 2016.”

The government viewed the dismissal as “a tragic day for professionalism and the respect for human rights in the Nigeria police force,” saying that “the dismissed officers committed no crime, other than foil a carefully orchestrated electoral heist by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in collusion with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Police force.”

According to the statement, the claim by the Police that the affected officers misused their firearms while in the convoy of governor Wike on the 10th of December, 2016, was a wrong and cruel fabrication.

The state government, then, urged Nigerians to demand the immediate reinstatement of these officers, and for the Inspector General of Police to allow an independent inquiry, adding that the APC government has never hidden it’s alleged desperation to “overrun Rivers State, colonize its people and loot the treasury of the State.”

The statement maintained that the Rivers people would continue to resist all attempts to enslave them.

Arik passengers stranded in Kaduna Airport for 4 days

Several passengers, including children, were stranded at Kaduna International Airport since on Tuesday, following the failure of Arik Airlines to airlift them as scheduled.
Some of the disappointed passengers made the complaint to the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, at the airport during the on-the-spot assessment of the facilities on ground at the airport.

They lamented that they had been parading the airport since on Tuesday just to board Arik air from Kaduna to Lagos to no avail without any explanation or apology from the airline officials.

They described the attitude of the operators of the airline as nonchalant because there was no any notification by any means. They added that it was until after the passengers approached the minister to complain that one of the official told them to come back on Saturday. The airline was said to have been canceling its flight without considering the distance they travelled from or the implication of such on their businesses.

One of the passengers who gave her name as Mrs Nkenna with her three kids told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she and her family were supposed to have traveled to Lagos on Tuesday. She said the airline had been cancelling flight without prior notification, adding that it had been the same experience in the last four days.

“I and my family including our children are being stranded at Kaduna Airport by Arik Airline. “I don’t know what to do because the airline did not give us any prior notice to the cancellation of the flight; no SMS, no email. “We have been coming to the airport everyday since on Tuesday hoping to to board only for an official of the airline to tell us on Friday that we will board on Saturday.

Another affected passengers, Mrs Janet Oyedele, expressed her frustration with the airline, saying she was not aware of the cancelation of the flight until she got to the airport.

“One of the staff working at the airline’s counter assured us that the flight was rescheduled for Saturday but was not sure of the possibility of the flight.

“Arik Air seems to be a disgrace to this country and unfortunately for them, they are not the only carrier flying, why are other airlines not affected?

“The reason is Arik air has been messing up with passengers and getting away with it over time,” she said.

Reacting to the four-day cancellation of flight, Arik Air Communications Manager, Mr Ola Adebanji, attributed the cancellation to fuel scarcity and bad weather. According to Adebanji, there is fuel scarcity earlier in the week coupled with bad weather.

So, it is not deliberate but if the weather is okay to fly today, they will go. On whether there would be any form of compensation for the passengers, he said he was not aware of that.

FIFA stops $1.5million grant to NFF over “traces of corruption”

World football governing body, FIFA, has decided to stop their annual $1.5million development grant to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), because they found “traces of corruption” in how previous funds were spent.
According to AfricanFootball, FIFA has also issued the NFF a final warning “to straighten their financial records”.

Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, had expressed his anger after FIFA sent a query on how NFF used grants they received.

The letter from the world football governing body was signed from the office in charge of the national associations.

FIFA member-associations including Nigeria, began to receive increased annual grants under new president, Gianni Infantino.

Initially, they were paid $250,000 annually, before it was increased to between $1.2million and $1.5million to each FA.

Gernot Rohr reacts to Mikel Obi’s move to China

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said he does not have any problem with John Obi Mikel moving to China.

The captain of Nigeria’s national team, has signed a three-year deal with Tianjin TEDA, after leaving Chelsea on a free transfer.

Rohr also advised other Nigerian players to move during the January transfer window.

“Some are not playing in their clubs and now is the month, very important January when they can change clubs to play and have competition,” he told Channels TV on Friday.

“It is very important that Super Eagles players have competition in their clubs.

“He (Mikel) did not play much in the last month. He played in the Olympics, don’t forget it – he played all the games. He also played all the games for Super Eagles but (only) did not play in Chelsea.

“So I am happy that he can play now in China. It is always better to play in China than to stay in Chelsea and not play.

“He is now nearing the end of his career and it is normal that he is looking for a good contract,” the coach said.

Former Niger Delta militants get 2 months salary

The Federal Government has paid two out of the four months outstanding stipends owed former Niger Delta militants under the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

Mr Ramsey Mukoro, leader of the 3rd phase of the amnesty programme, told newsmen on Saturday that some former agitators had received two out of four months’ salary backlog.

“The Amnesty Office has started paying but my third phase people have yet to get alerts, we are hoping that we in the third phase will benefit as well.

“It has really been difficult for us and we spend Christmas and New Year on empty stomach, they should try and make it go round,’’ Mukoro said.
Mr Piriye Kiyaramo, the Liaison Officer at the Bayelsa Office of the Presidential Amnesty Office, told pressmen that the Amnesty office began the payment after the new year holidays.

“The office commenced payment of the outstanding stipends this week after the new year, precisely on Wednesday.

“The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, retired Brig.- General Paul Boroh is concerned about the welfare of beneficiaries in the programme.

“He would stop at nothing until a sustainable reintegration of the ex-agitators into the society with sustainable source of livelihood,’’ he said in a statement.

Police arrest journalist over Facebook post, fly him to Abuja

Some plain-clothes policemen on Friday arrested and whisked to Abuja a journalist based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Jerry Edoho.

The young journalist, who is the Deputy Editor of Ibom Nation Newspaper, a local publication, was arrested by the security operatives and forcibly taken to the Federal Capital over a post he allegedly put up on his Facebook page involving Dana Air.

Edoho, had while reacting to a photograph of a purported crash involving a Dana flight heading to Lagos from Abuja in which he was tagged, sought clarification from friends on his list to confirm the authenticity of the story.

He had written, “Rumor via social media (Facebook) has it that Dana Air enroute Abj-Lag with 153 passengers crashed killing all on board. Please could someone help verify the authenticity of this shocking report? Below is (the) pix from the scene as uploaded on my wall.”

But following a petition by Dana Air to the police authorities in Abuja after the said photograph became a hot topic of discussion among a section of Facebook users; Edoho was arrested in Uyo on Friday and taken to the FCT on a Dana flight scheduled to leave by 4pm.

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who confirmed the incident to Saturday PUNCH around 8pm on Friday shortly before leaving Uyo for Lagos, said he saw three plain-clothes security officers forcibly taking Edoho away while still at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo.

He said, “Jerry Edoho sighted me at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo, and alerted me that he was being taken forcibly to Abuja by a team of plain-clothes security men over a publication on Facebook.

“He told me that he was tagged in a post about the recent rumoured crash of a Dana plane, which was false. That, upon being tagged, he made a post like several other Nigerians asking whether the crash report was true. The security men were to convey him to Abuja via a Dana flight that was scheduled to depart by 4pm.

“The security men confronted me for speaking with him ‘without their permission.’ I retorted that Mr. Edoho is a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that his right to freedom of expression cannot be taken away. This resulted in an altercation between me and the security men whose identity I cannot immediately ascertain. I understand that his arrest followed a petition by Dana Air to the Nigeria Police Force.

“I am using this platform to urge both the police and the management of Dana Air to respect the fundamental rights of Mr. Edoho. He should be released on bail pending the conclusion of investigation into whatever allegations that have been made against him. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship.”

When contacted, Spokesperson for Dana Air, Mr. Kingsley Ezenwa, said he wasn’t aware of the issue but that he would get back to our correspondent as soon as he was able to confirm the matter. His response was still being expected as of the time the paper went to press.

BREAKING NEWS: Pastor EA Adeboye retires as General Overseer of RCCG, names successor

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has retired as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Just last year, the church slammed those calling for the 74-year-old to retire as head of RCCG.

Pastor Johnson Odesola, Special Assistant to Pastor Adeboye on Administration and Personnel, said at the time that the church’s constitution did not state that anyone above 70 years should not lead the ministry.

He said: “Whereas the constitution provided that the deputy and assistant general overseers are appointed to retire at 70 and enjoy their retirement benefits for life, there is no such provision for the general overseer.”

Pastor J.O. Obayemi has been named as Adeboye’s successor.

Obayemi was a deputy in charge of Finance and a member of governing council, before his appointment.

Anxiety grips 33 governors over N552.74bn refund,EFCC & ICPC marking them closely .

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun

Some of the 33 governors whose states benefitted from the recent refund of N553 billion excess deductions are desperate to keep details of the financial transactions from the public.

They do not want their civil servants in particular to have the details so that the workers will not be able to blackmail them as they did in respect of the bailouts.

President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the release of N522.74 billion to states as refunds pending reconciliation of records.

In directing Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun to release the money to the states, Buhari said workers’ welfare, particularly salaries and pensions,  must be prioritized.

Some states were accused of diverting the N300billion bailout  first given to them last year and abusing the loan restructure worked out for them by the Debt Management Office (DMO).

Many states are still owning their workers for several months and there are fears that some of the governors are less interested in using the refunds to meet their financial obligations to the workers.

Informed sources said in Abuja yesterday that the Presidency is likely to show more than a passing interest in how the states deploy the refunds and may even monitor the use of the cash.

It was also learnt that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) are also going to keep tabs on the utilization of the bailout funds by governors.

The refund sheets had been obtained by the anti-graft agencies as at press time.

The Nation gathered that the  governors prevailed on Adeosun not to make details of what they got  public to avoid  fresh confrontation with workers.

The breakdown per state remains a secret at the  Ministry of Finance in line with the agreement with the governors.

Following protest by states against over deductions for external debt service between 1995 and 2002, 33 states were listed as beneficiaries with each of them entitled to a cap of N14.5 billion being 25% of the amounts claimed.

Minister Adeosun said the payment of the claims will enable the states offset outstanding salaries and pensions which have been “causing considerable hardship.”

The presidency asked  the states to devote a minimum of 50% of any amount disbursed to address the challenges associated with salaries and pensions.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that presidency had asked the 33 states to use 50 per cent of the bailout funds for “challenges associated with salaries and pensions.”

Security reports have however indicated that some of the governors have refused to disclose the amount actually given to their states.

Findings confirmed that some of the governors have devoted only 10 to 25 per cent of the bailout to payment of backlog of salaries

A reliable source in government said: “The presidency has received reports that some state governors were not forthcoming on the actual refunds paid to them. In fact, the row over the figures has caused tension.

“Some state governors have openly come out to declare that only a fraction of the bailout funds will be used for salaries and pensions. There is a state which purportedly received about N5billion, but it only earmarked N1.5billion, leaving outstanding wages unaddressed.

“The President will be personally upset if these bailout funds are diverted or converted to other use by the governors. The presidency is already monitoring development in all the states.

“If the bailout funds are not judiciously used, the presidency may not be disposed to such interventions in future.”

It was difficult at press time to get the exact figures of what was  released to each of the 33 states.

A finance ministry official said: “The governors reached an agreement with the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, not to release the breakdown in order not to cause tension in the affected states. They said they might incur the wrath of workers if there is full disclosure.

“At the governors’ forum, all members were directed to keep the figures under wraps because of the likely consequences in each state. This is why some governors have under-declared what they were allocated.”

Attempts by the Nation correspondent to get the breakdown from the Federal Ministry of Finance have failed as all relevant desks claimed that “there is instruction from above not to release the fact-sheet.”

One of the desk officers said: “There are even threats to deal with whoever releases the breakdown.”

Meanwhile, it was also learnt that the EFCC and ICPC have been mandated to keep tabs on the utilization of these funds.

“The anti-graft agencies already have the fact-sheet on the allocations to each state and they are keeping tabs on all these governors. In the last exercise in April, ICPC had discovered that about 16 states were yet to disburse about N57, 663, 185, 735 allocated to them out of N713.7billion intervention funds to states.

“The first bailout was part of a three-pronged relief package that will end the workers’ plight. While N413.7billion represents special intervention funds, the balance of about N250billion to N300billion is a soft loan to states.

“Altogether, we are talking of about N1, 266.44trillion in nine months given to governors as bailout funds. This is why the EFCC and ICPC will take more than a passing interest.”

OMG ! WikiLeaks Threatens To Create Dossier Of Celebrities' Sensitive Personal Information.

This sounds really, really wrong. On Friday, Julian Assange's WikiLeaks revealed plans to possibly create a dossier of sensitive information on Twitter's verified accounts.

Verified accounts typically belong to celebrities, high-ranking officials, and other people of prominence.

As for what info would be included in the index, the organization cited "family/job/financial/housing relationships." The group explained they'd use the data to create a "metric to understand influence networks based on proximity graphs." Hmmm... In response to the announcement, Twitter FLIPPED OUT and slammed WikiLeaks for its hypocrisy.

Nigeria buys new aircraft from Russia

The Nigerian Airforce says it has acquired two Mi-35M attack helicopters from Russia to fight terrorists and criminal gangs.

The Mi-35M is a rugged helicopter that offers round the clock combat use of guided and unguided weapons in regular and challenging climate conditions which is equipped with the latest navigation suite, target sights system, laser range finder and location finder.

“The aircraft have already been delivered awaiting official induction after which they will be launched for operations,” the Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar, said at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.

He said the Air Force has also installed camera on a Beechcraft aircraft NAF 202 and NAF 204, and upgraded the camera on NAF 201 all in 2016.

“Furthermore, 3x EC-135 helicopters were handed over to the NAF by NNPC in March 2016. In collaboration with Aero-contractors Nigeria Ltd, 2 of the helicopters were reactivated.

“These included NAF 547 and NAF 548. Efforts are also on-going to carry out PDM/reactivation of 2x Mi-35P helicopters NAF 530 and NAF 531,” he said.

The Air force has also recently inducted four new Super Mushshak Trainer Aircraft, which were acquired from Pakistan.

The Air Force also said it spent over N25 billion to train pilots in 2016. The pilots were trained both locally and outside Nigeria.

The Chief of Operations of the Force, Isiaka Amao, an Air Vice Marshal, who made the main presentation said the training activities of the Airforce in 2016 placed more emphasis on “pilots, engineers, technician and regiment personnel”.

“The NAF in 2016 trained 869 of its personnel overseas including 101 pilots and 357 engineers and technicians, while 4,868 were trained locally including 131 pilots and 643 engineers and technicians,” he said.

Throwing more light later, the Chief of Training and Operations, Ahmed Iya, also an Air Vice Marshal, said the Airforce spends “between $600,000 to $700,000 to train Pilots overseas while about $60,000 to $70,000 is spent to train Pilots locally”.

At official rate of N305 to the dollar, the force spent some N25. 7 billion on the pilot trainings.
The Air Chief said 14 Pilots recently graduated and joined the pool of fighter pilots within the service adding “presently more Pilots are training in Ilorin, Jordan and with the Egyptian Airforce”.

The Air force Chief also said “a total of 6,000 hrs was flown by NAF platforms translating to Jet A-1 fuel consumption of 10,525,945 liters”. He said despite this extensive employment of air power, “the casualty figures of own troops were minimal due to the professionalism displayed by NAF pilots”.
He however, failed to give the exact figure of the total casualty.

No increment in import duties on food items, luxury goods – Nigerian Government

The federal government on Friday said it has not raised import duties on food items and luxury goods.
A statement released by the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Finance, Salisu Dambatta, stated that the 2016 Fiscal Policy Measures, FPM, did not involve any upward review of tariff on certain food items and luxury goods.

Mr. Dambatta explained that tariffs for the items remained at their 2015 levels, while duties for some other items were actually reduced.

According to the statement, a comparison of the 2015 Fiscal Policy Measures and the 2016 Fiscal Policy Measures would affirm the reduction.

“On the contrary, tariffs for those items remained at their 2015 levels, while duties for some other items were actually reduced. A comparison of the 2015 Fiscal Policy Measures Circular dated 20th March, 2015 and the 2016 Fiscal Policy Measures dated 29th November, 2016 will affirm this position,” Mr. Dambatta said.

Commenting on the 20 per cent duty on pharmaceutical products in the 2016 Fiscal Policy Measure, the statement said that pharmaceutical products were in the import prohibition list.

Mr. Dambatta explained that the move is in support of local manufacturers of pharmaceutical products, adding that those who import the products under special permission are mandated to pay the required duties.

“This is in support of Government’s intention (to) give further encouragement and desirable protection to local manufacturers of Pharmaceutical products and ensure that those who, despite the prohibition, import such products under special permission, pay the required duties.”
