Anenih retires from politics

Former Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, has retired from partisan politics.

The former PDP BoT Chairman who announced his disengagement ‎from active politics on Saturday at the presentation of his autobiography, “My Life and Nigerian Politics,” also urged Nigerians to drop partisan politics and support efforts by President Muhammadu Buhari to end recession.

“I am persuaded that I have no more ambition nor any point to prove in politics.

“I am, therefore, glad to declare that, from today, I shall be withdrawing from active partisan politics.

“I shall, however, continue to avail the country of my experience, give suggestions and offer advice, as a statesman,” Anenih told ‎his audience.

The former PDP leader said the current recession in the country is a national predicament which must be confronted by all irrespective of political affiliation.

“I therefore urge Nigerians to persevere and hope for better tomorrow. We must support and pray that God will give the President the wisdom and vision to steer the country away from recession to prosperity.

But former President ‎Goodluck Jonathan appealed that he should rescind his decision.

Jonathan, who was among distinguished personalities that attended the book presentation, said Anenih’s experience in security and politics would be wasted if he makes good his decision to quit politics at this time.

How I Was Defrauded Of N918m, Atiku’s Wife Tells Court

Mrs Aminat Titi Abubakar, wife of former Nigeria’s Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday told a Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja of how she was defrauded of N918 million by a former governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom State, Nsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs.

The  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Jacobs, Abdulmalik Ibrahim and Dana Motors  on a 15-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and fraudulent conversion of properties belonging to THA Shipping Maritime Services Ltd.

Led by the prosecution counsel, Mr Babatunde Sonoiki, told the court presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye how Akpan allegedly defrauded her of her shares in the company and other proceeds.

She told the court thàt Akpan Jacobs who doubled as the company’s managing director and secretary had allegedly gone to the Corporate Affairs Commission where he altered the share arrangement in his favour.

She alleged Akpan forged a company board resolution re-distributing the shares ownership and alloted 70 per cent to himself , 15 per cent to her and 15 per cent to Holmes.

With the shares re-distribution, Akpan Jacobs was alleged to have fraudulently assumed full ownership of  THA Shipping  and subsequently sold a property worth N918m belonging to the company to Dana Motor Nigeria Limited.

When asked, she said Akpan told her that he allotted major shares to himself in other to obtain loan from the bank for the company.

Testifying further before the court, Mrs Atiku stated that Akpan Jacobs , a pastor used the proceeds from the sales of the company’s property to contest for the governorship position in Akwa Ibom State.

Mrs Atiku lamented that her investment in the company had gone down the drain and  stated that her interest in coming to court is to ensure that justice is done.

“I have never been inside a court before. Not even a police station in all my life. I am here because I want justice. All my investment and even profit are gone. I want this to serve as a deterrent to other fraudsters that they can’t defraud people and not face justice”, she said.

Part of the charge preferred against the defendants by the EFCC stated: “that ýNsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs and Abdulmalik Ibrahim as the Managing Director and Company Secretary on or about the 10th day of August 2008 in Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud stole and converted to your own personal use the sum of N918,000,000.00 being proceeds sale of the property and appurtenances situted at Plot C63 A Amuwo Odofin Commercial. Layout along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos belonging to Tha Shipping and Maritime Service limited entrusted with you as the Managing Director.

ý”Nsikakabasi Akpan Jacobs and Abdulmalik Ibrahimý on or about the 1st day July 2002 in Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud forged a Memorandum and Article of Association of Tha Shipping and Maritme Service Limited dated the 1st day of July 2002 purporting the sgnatures therein to have been signed by Florence Doregos and Fred Holms.”

DSS Sting operation: Reps drill Justice Dimgba, Wike, Liman, CCB, others

THE House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee investigating all cases of property and arrest of persons by the Department of State Services, (DSS), especially the circumstances surrounding the attempt to arrest a Federal High Court judge in Port Harcourt, yesterday drilled Justice Abdulahi Liman of Port Harcourt Federal Court, Governor Nyesom Wike, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba and the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau.

DSS OPERATIVES

This is as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in Rivers State, Emmanuel Aguma, SAN, who represented Governor Nyesom Wike at the investigative hearing declared that nepotism and breach of federal character laws in appointment constituted worse threat to national security than stealing.

The committee had also sought to know the junior SSS operative that insulted Governor Wike, an elected governor during the sting operation.

Meanwhile, Justice Liman told the House Committee that he was the person that advised Justice Uche Agomoh not to allow the operatives of DSS into her residence on October 8, 2016, when the sting operation was carried out, until the identity and mission of the operatives were made known to avoid hoodlums claiming to be security operatives raiding the place.

In his testimony, Liman denied that the DSS operatives came to his house but stated that they went to Justice Agomoh’s residence.

Why I told Justice Agomoh not to let the DSS in— Liman
He also stated that he received distress call from Justice Agomoh who he said was his neighbour on October 8 when the incident occurred, that her (Agomoh) security staff called her attention to the presence of some people at her gate who claimed to be security operatives, demanding to see her over some security issues.

He said: “I asked her if she had asked her security men to let them in, she said, no. I then advised her not to allow them entry while she made contact calls to other people who might come to her aid, in case they turned out to be robbers, assassins or even kidnappers.”

One of the arrested Judges, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba declined to comment on the matter because of its pendency with the National Judicial Commission, NJC, saying any comment on the matter was prejudicial, but pleaded with the committee to avail him of any allegation made against him by the DSS, a request that was granted.

Action of SSS a national tragedy—Wike
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, described the incident as a national tragedy, adding that a good cause should not be fought by wrong method, even as he said that he was not against the fight against corruption.

DSS has constitutional right to arrest— CCB
In his presentation, the Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau, Sam Saba disagrees with the submission of the Rivers State governor that the DSS lacked the constitutional powers to carry out arrest of the judges.

According to him, “The provision of section 2 subsection 3 of NSA Act Cap N74 states as follows, “The state security has powers of prevention, detention within Nigeria of any crime against the internal security of Nigeria.

Wike’s baseless allegation a cheap ploy to intimidate, harass INEC- Amaechi

GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, yesterday, alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had handed over original result sheets of the coming rerun elections in Rivers State to  the former governor of the state and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi  Amaechi.

But reacting swiftly, Ameachi, through his Media Office, said: “This new wild, baseless allegation by Governor Wike is a cheap ploy by a failing garrulous man to intimidate and harass INEC into doing his bidding and whip up public sentiment against All Progressives Congress, APC, its candidates for the elections and the President Buhari administration, ahead of the December 10, re-run elections in Rivers State.

“We know his game. This is an old worn out trick that will certainly fail.  Wike is scared, profoundly afraid; this is why he is telling these spurious lies. He knows he will lose at the polls, if the election is free and fair. Amaechi has no business with any result sheets for the coming elections and has nothing to do with Sheriff or the self-imposed woes and travails of PDP.”

Similarly, the electoral body has dismissed the allegations as unfounded.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, told Vanguard on phone that he was not aware of such development, noting that result sheets for the election had not even been printed.

However, Governor Wike, who spoke while flagging- off the construction of Ulakwo II Afara Nihi road in Etche Local Government, claimed it was Amaechi that made the disclosure on Tuesday  in Abuja during a meeting of Rivers APC leaders.

While boasting that he was in possession of the proceedings of the alleged Abuja meeting of the APC, he said:  “While we are working for the people of Rivers State to convince them to vote for us, the APC is busy working with INEC to rig the rerun elections. Amaechi told them at the meeting that Sheriff is working for them (APC ) and that they have   finished PDP.” Sheriff cannot finish PDP, he can only finish himself.

“On December 10, follow your results bumper to bumper. Don’t allow anyone to swap results.”

Jungle Justice Bill Scales Second Reading at the Senate.

In October, it was reported that a bill to protect people against jungle justice had scaled second reading in the Senate and might soon become a law. Considering that there are already laws against wanton killings in place, such a bill is superfluous.

Nigerians practise jungle justice, not for a lack of laws but because our institutions are too tepid to enforce existing ones.

Lately, in the cosmopolitan city of Lagos, a young man was lynched by a mob for the alleged crime of stealing a mobile phone. There are conflicting accounts of the incident and up till now, nobody has sorted through the murky details to produce the identity of the victim. His killers depersonalised and dehumanised him to justify his gruesome murder. Even if he truly stole a mobile phone, his death was unwarranted. There are reasons human societies institute laws commensurate to a crime and we need to find the language to explain that to a mob; people who have already consigned themselves to the status of animals so they could legitimately rip another one of their kind at the jugular.

In Nigeria, it does not take much more than a mere accusation to be a victim of jungle justice. Most people who participate do not even stop to ask questions before rushing to mob a victim.

In the wake of the Lagos’ unfortunate incident, the Senate is hastening the passage of the bill into law. While it is almost gratifying that the lawmakers are demonstrating responsiveness, a law is a reductionist solution to a complex problem.

How many more laws would have protected the four undergraduates of University of Port Harcourt who were lynched after being falsely accused of theft in Aluu community? What gave their killers gumption if not a conviction that the law is largely impotent? A couple of years ago, an older woman probably suffering from dementia was lynched in the same Lagos by retarded folks who were convinced she fell from the sky when she transfigured from bird to human. Her killers do not need more laws to stop their Inquisition crusade.

Likewise, the 74-year-old Mrs. Bridget Agbahime of Kano State mobbed by those who believed she had blasphemed against an indifferent god. I read her husband’s interview where he described the incident in vivid details and I could not help but weep. Imagine how devastating it must be for him to have witnessed the death of his wife, lost his livelihood, and on top of all the trauma he has suffered, learnt that those apprehended by the police had been set free. What good would have been more laws for the National Youth Service Corps members who perished in the heated aftermath of the 2011 elections? It has been 21 years since Gideon Akaluka’s decapitation; today, the guilty parties swagger around and about the metropolis, their freedom a middle finger to the law.

I will concede though, that due to socio-cultural changes, and the upgrade in the tools we use to navigate daily existence, existing laws need to be tweaked. These days, it is not uncommon for folks to gather around lynching sites to take selfies, posing against a scene of gross inhumanity and using the dead as a backdrop for their narcissism. There are those who are quick to whip out their phones to record mobbing so they can share it on social media and generate traffic for their pages and blogs. There are those whose presence at such scenes engineer the expectation of perverse entertainment; they wilfully egg on the perpetrators, hyping a lynching so they can derive some catharsis from ritualised violence. At varying levels, these people share culpability with those who carry out the actual lynching.

What psychologists have previously described as bystander apathy has a fresh traction in the age of social media. People are no longer content to simply stand around expecting others to take responsibility and stop the crime. No, they want to see the lynching carried through so they can record a spectacular footage and share later. By processing such grievous acts into fodder for bored eyes, they might also be establishing the evidence of their own involvement in the crime. We can argue that people who record such scenes provide key evidence of human depravity but analyses of such eyewitness activities have revealed that people also create the news they eventually report. Combating mob justice should involve interrogating the role the hand behind the camera played; whether by divesting themselves of responsibility and watching the crime happen through their camera lenses, they are accessories to murder.

If the Senate will carry on with the bill, they will do well to remember that jungle justice in Nigeria does not happen only on the streets, it is in fact a staple of our judicial system. Fighting jungle justice should therefore start from understanding the processes of its social and psychological formation; the cultural undercurrents that make it possible for people on the streets to abjure legal processes and proceed to administer justice as it suits them.

We cannot talk about the jungle justice that takes place on the streets without talking about President Muhammdu Buhari who, on live TV, displayed his lack of regard for court orders on the leader of the Independent People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and former NSA, Sambo Dasuki. We should also talk about Buhari’s tacit endorsement of the death of the Shiites who stood in the way of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai. About 350 of them were buried in a mass grave. What about the death of the pro-Biafra protesters who were cut down by police bullets as they ran for their lives? Like Pontius Pilate, the rest of us – including voices in the civil society who used to be active right up until the last administration – simply wash the blood from our conscience.

From Buhari, we should move on to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission whose idea of justice now is largely hunting down people, subjecting them to public ridicule, and quietly letting them go afterwards. Right from the time Buhari became President, the EFCC has spent more time entertaining us with confession narratives coming out of their gulag and little else in the actual fight against corruption. We are expected to simply lap it all up like those who use their phones to record lynching. Afterwards, they send us on our way, tense with our aborted pleasure of witnessing justice done. With such level of erosion of public confidence in judicial institutions, making more laws to combat jungle justice is disingenuous.

These days, being tried in the “court of public opinion” is the closest we get to see justice done in the anti-corruption fight. We can take it for granted that much of the hoopla about arresting people, detaining them, and granting them bail is a cycle that is meant to merely make us dizzy. Yet, there are people out there who hail this ugly development; they further beg for the constitution to be suspended so the President can “properly” fight crime. If the so-called educated people consider the law as an encumbrance to their idea of justice, why would those on the streets who are quick to lynch feel any differently?

Tackling jungle justice or any of its variants will do well to catch those in government who use extrajudicial means to overcome what they consider the shortcomings of the legal systems.

The proponents of the bill may have good intentions but they cannot circumvent the reality: mob justice is not merely about the spectacle of public lynching; it goes all the way to up to the leadership. The Senate should do more than merely munch on facts in a parliamentary session, they need to properly address the lapses of administrative infrastructure that make even the state resort to jungle justice.

FG bars unqualified teachers from 500,000 jobs scheme

The Federal Government has agreed to ban unqualified and unregistered teachers from classrooms nationwide, the Registrar/Chief Executive of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, has said.

According to him, the government will not consider teachers without registration certificates and TRCN licence for its 500,000 teachers’ recruitment scheme.

He stated that already, the decision had been jointly endorsed by President Muhammadu Buhari; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah.

Ajiboye said this on Wednesday in Abuja during the 10th Education Conference organised by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, with the theme, “Improving Education standards and emulating  the global perspective and practices.”

He said, “Presently, it has been accepted by the Federal Government; the President, and ministers of education have agreed that no one again that is not qualified and is not registered with the TRCN will stand and teach in our classrooms.

“I can assure you that no one will be employed as a teacher by the Federal Government without licence and registration certificate. We are calling on all teachers to register, if you know yourself and you refer to yourself as a professional teacher, you must be registered with the TRCN. You must carry our certificate and our licence.

“At the last induction ceremony that was conducted last week in OAU (Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, six professors registered with the TRCN and 14 other academics were also inducted into the teaching profession.”

While calling on teachers both in public and private schools to ensure they were duly registered and licensed by the TRCN, Ajiboye said the Kaduna State Government, had directed its teachers to obtain their licences and registration certificates before they could be promoted.

He said, “Teachers in private schools are also expected to be registered and licensed by the TRCN. According to the law establishing the council we are the ones who can talk about who is a teacher in this country.

“Currently, teachers in private schools are responding to TRCN’s call for them to register. Now we are in the level of persuasion when we move beyond this level we will go to the enforcement of the law.”

The President of NAPPS, Dr. Sally Adukwu-Bolujoko, called on the Federal Government to invest 50 per cent of the budget in education every year for the next 20 years to revamp public schools.

He added, “From 2012 to date, all the budgets in education have just been about 11 per cent, whereas you know that UNESCO’s benchmark for developing country is 26 per cent. Countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast have started to give more than 26 per cent. With our large population, and the biggest economy in Africa, we have not reached half the mark of UNESCO.

“The state of our public schools is appalling. It is not a place where value is given. It is a place where the values children acquire from good homes get eroded. We are asking that as a matter of strategy, focus on education by funding it and having the political will to drive and to monitor our money till it delivers results.

“We are bothered that the Nigerian child’s education is poor, under the threes, dilapidated houses, sitting on bricks and on the floor. Every child should be captured in school. No longer should a Nigerian child be at home or hawking when others are in school.”

Mariah Carey Dishes On James Packer Breakup For The First Time & Reacts To Nick Cannon's New Baby

Mariah Carey is somewhat opening up about her recent breakup with James Packer. And chick said she's too traumatized to discuss it. Find out how she’s dealing with it and more inside….

The Queen of Christmas isn’t letting a pesky breakup keep her from enjoying the holiday festivities.

In true MiMi fashion, Mariah Carey hit the stage on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” in a red silk robe serving up Holiday glamour. “I try to festivate whenever I can,” she said. Festivate?!

After stripping off her robe (showing off an all black ensemble underneath), the Grammy Award winner dished publicly for the first time about her breakup with her ex-billionaire fiancé James Packer. We noticed she wasn't wearing her massive 35-carat engagement ring anymore.

By the way, Mariah is gunning for $50 million that was promised to her in an unsigned pre-nup. Get those deets HERE.

Ellen talked about Mimi’s new docu-series, “Mariah’s World,” where fans will get to see her trying on wedding dresses as she prepared to trek down the aisle.
"Now it’s a whole friggin' thing," the Elusive Chanteuse singer said. When asked if she’s happy and how she’s feeling mentally, Mariah responded,
"I think I'm doing well. … Everything happens for a reason. Things are the way they are."

Very true.

Ellen then probed Mariah about James appearing on the docu-series. While reports claim he never wanted to be on the show, MiMi alluded that may not have been the case.

Ellen said, "He didn't want to be in the docuseries at all. And yet he's in it. You see him."

"Allegedly," Mimi snidely responded.
Also, in a separate interview with EXTRA, the hot mom broke her silence about her ex-husband Nick Cannon's newbaby on the way. And she seems very supportive.
She said, “I’ll always be supportive of him… and this is all news to me, 'cause I didn’t know about this till maybe last week. I asked him a question and then he kinda said yes, but didn’t, and I’m like, it’s kinda confirmed… If he’s happy that’s great.”
Since Mariah and Nick are currently single, they may spend Christmas together with the kids in Aspen as they normally do.

"Mariah's World" premieres December 4th on E!

Benue Deputy Speaker cross-carpets to APC

The Deputy Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. James Okefe Tuesday abandoned his original party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter read on the floor of the Assembly by the Speaker, Hon. Ikyange, Okefe anchored his decision to defect to the APC on section 109 sub-section 1 (g) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Deputy Speaker solely relied on the current leadership tussle in the PDP at both National and State levels to dish out his membership of the PDP.

“As you may be aware, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has been enmeshed in a protracted internal crisis which has thus far defiled all efforts to resolve, including court rulings.

“The crisis has polarised the party along Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff lines at the National Secretariat, and along Honourables Dan Ale and John Ngbede lines in Benue State”, the letter reads in part.

The deputy Speaker also disclosed that the unruly rivalry going on in his former party has greatly affected his smooth operations at the state Assembly.

“In view of the forgoing, therefore, I hereby write to formally notify you of my decision to quit the PDP on which platform I was elected to the House and join the APC on the strength of the above argument”, Okefe submitted.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as act of “cowardice,” the hypocritical disposition of the deputy Speaker since his assumption in office.

While reacting to the official letter of defection submitted by Hon. Okefe on Tuesday, the Minority Leader of the 8th Assembly, Hon. Sule Audu lambasted the deputy Speaker for waiting for such a long time before he could summon courage to cross-carpet.

According to Audu, the deputy Speaker has been hobnobbing with the APC since the day he betrayed his party, PDP and joined force with the minority APC to produce Principal Officers of the House, during the inauguration of the 8th Assembly.

The leader of PDP in the House said the umbrella party had since forgotten anybody in the name of James Okefe and wondered why he (Okefe) would be saying he was decamping afresh.

DAILY POST recalls that Hon. James Okefe, a member representing Okpokwu State Constituency was elected under the PDP during the 2015 general elections, making the umbrella party the majority in the 8th Assembly.

He, however, formed alliance with the minority, APC, and with the intervention of the leaders of APC in the state, he became the deputy Speaker, after he supported the candidate of the APC to clinch the Speakership.

I stiched my anus thrice, wore pampers for years – Repented Nigerian gay

An ex-homosexual, Emmanuel Stephens, has narrated his ugly ordeal when he was gay.

The graduate of Theatre Arts, University of Calabar, Crosss Rivers State, shared his tale with New Telegraph in a bid to discourage intending gays.

According to him, the act has made him stitch his anus thrice and it was the worse experience ever.
He said, “I had my anus sutured three times while I was practicing homosexualism. That was the price I had to pay for such ignorance. The first suture was in South Africa. There, it wasn’t a problem because people don’t give a damn but coming back to Nigeria was a clash of culture and my religion.

“I went to South Africa in search of greener pastures, but fell in the hands of late Johnson, a gay, whom I served for four and quarter years.

“I was forced into the ‘fraternity’ (homosexualism) and when I got back to Nigeria and met a particular doctor for the second round of anus suture; I knew my time was up, following the doctor’s counseling.

“So, when I came back to Abuja, I continued the practice until I met a Christian doctor, who was supposed to suture my torn anus. The doctor had done it once and the second time, he had to counsel me on the dangers of homosexuality and advised me to quit, which I paid no heed to. I treated him with some level of contempt but on that very day, I had an issue with my system, and he gave me an option of repentance or death.

“When I was given such options, I chose life than to die and gave up the practice but it wasn’t easy at first because the doctor made me go through a psychologist and psychiatrist as a way of reforming me. After that, I had a new lease of life.

“I had been wearing adult pampers to prevent the feaces that regularly oozes from the anus because the anus had widened and cannot control defecation.

“Really, Satan has a way of subjecting the ignorant people into perpetual bondage. I thought I was a ‘big boy,’ spending money at will but I was dying gradually. I don’t know how I got into such. Women didn’t appeal to me then. I played the female character,” Emmanuel who has turned a new leaf stated.

“I have been admiring the wealth of this man and he drives clean cars. We all sell motor parts but I didn’t know he has something else. One day, the man called me and said, ‘Victor, you want to be like me?’ I said ‘yes’. And he asked me to follow him. We entered a public toilet, he removed his pant and showed me blood stained pampers and said, ‘This is what we do for money. I blend homosexualism with drugs.’

“If you are interested, come, I will make you. When I saw and heard what he said, I opened my mouth agape and he laughed and said, ‘You don’t want to be like me. I’m not a cultist.

“I have showed you what I do. I was surprised because we all pursue the same trade. This is a very clean man that drives the latest model of G-Wagon. I didn’t accept the offer because I’m married and I didn’t know how to hide it from my wife.”

What’s your excuse? 6 funny reasons some Lagosians give for skipping work

Living and working in Lagos can be very tough. Aside from the horrible traffic situation around town, the hustle to earn a living can take a toll on you not just physically, but emotionally as well. Sometimes, little things happen around you and you feel the need to just seize the opportunity and take a break from work to just chill; other time, you just hate your job and need some time away from it. Either way, you figure the only way to get away with it, without losing your day’s pay or even your job is by calling in sick. While these excuses may not be too far from the truth, many Nigerians have, in attempt to be creative, gone all out to make their excuses seem more legit. Jumia Travel shares 6 of the most hilarious, ridiculous and outrageous but REAL excuses some Nigerians have actually given to miss work. Want to steal an excuse? Scroll down!

I entered one chance

The term “One chance” is commonly used in Lagos to refer to vehicles that load passengers and take them to unknown locations so as to rob them or murder them for their body parts. A number of Lagosians have survived encounter with “one chance” and so, some other now use it as a valid reason to skip work, switch of their contacts and call in a few days later to say they escaped a one-chance bus. Usually the employer cannot request for proof and is morally expected to be just sympathetic, but also probably extend a few more days off for the individual.

I have explosive diarrhea

This is the most common excuse most people in the labour force in Lagos use when they call in sick. Due to the numerous local food joints around town, there is always a high chance anyone could get food poisoning and eventually suffer diarrhea. Even better, diarrhea is easily contained with proper hydration and other home remedies, so the victim may not necessarily be required to issue a hospital report upon resumption.

I caught my spouse cheating on me

This excuse normally should be a personal issue that should not be announced, but Lagosians are not perturbed. A number of people have called in to explain they cannot come in for work because they caught their spouse cheating and are too disoriented to be productive at work. This may be a hilarious reason but sometimes is actually so serious the police are involved.

My mother had a bad dream

Lagosians are highly superstitious and it would not be surprising for someone to call in and state that they cannot come in for work because they got a call in the morning from their mother as she had dreamed they would meet their demise should they step out of their house on the day.

My dog gave birth

It can be difficult owning and raising a pet while working in Lagos, but some people are passionate about it. They not only have pets, but they make a side business out of it. These set of people, because of the strong relationship they have with their pets, consider such reasons as “my dog gave birth” legitimate enough not to come in for work.

My vehicle ran out of fuel

Fuel is a priced commodity in Lagos at the moment, as the city suffers bouts of fuel scarcity from time to time. During these times of scarcity, some people actually call in with excuses that they ran out of fuel and do not expect to get penalized in any way.

Boy Allegedly Burnt To Death In Lagos Was A Notorious Thief In His 20’s – Police

The Lagos State Police Command has opened up on the news of the seven-year-old boy allegedly burnt to death over gari in the Orile area of Lagos.

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspect was believed to be between 20 and 25 years old, and not a seven-year-old boy which went viral on the social media. He also said the charred remains of suspect who was burnt to death has been recovered.

According to Owoseni, the lynching occurred around 4am penultimate Saturday. Read his statement below

He said, “In the course of the police investigation, it was discovered that the fellow that was lynched in the video was an adult. The police found his decomposing body in a canal somewhere in the Orile area. He was an adult of between 20 and 25 years.

The state emergency management agency was contacted to remove the corpse. Our inquiries revealed that he and two members of his gang had attacked a victim with a machete in order to snatch his wallet and mobile phone.

“It was also found out that his gang members had been operating in the area for a while. Some of the gang members had, at one time or the other, been arraigned in court and through the judicial process of securing bail, found themselves out again.

“During this particular incident, the mob collected the machete from the suspect and attacked him. In as much as we condemn all acts of impunity and people taking laws into their hands, you will agree that what happened was a societal problem.

“It would not be charitable to put the blame on the police. It is a menace that all of us should fight. The police will continue to make arrests when crimes are committed.”

ONDO ELECTION : We will replace Ibrahim's name with that of Jegede as ordered by the Appeal Court.- INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that it will obey the judgement of the Court Appeal, which asked it to remove the name of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Saturday governorship election in Ondo State.

The commission said it would now replace his name with that of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) as ordered by the appeal court.
However, the electoral body said that the order of the court should be served on it before Friday.

It said it was when such judgment is served on it that it will immediately comply with it.
Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, stated this in an interview with our correspondent.
He nevertheless said that the commission was not planning to shift the date of the election.
Oyekanmi said that the commission would now jettison the earlier Federal High Court judgment by Justice Abang Okon, asking it to use the name of Ibrahim as the PDP candidate.

He said, “Yes, the judgment as we followed it shows that we must replace the name of Ibrahim with that of Jegede.
“We will obey the judgment because this is an order coming from a superior court. We will abide by that decision.
“However, we will expect that the judgment be served on us before Friday to enable us comply. When we are served, we will comply immediately.
“But we are not going to shift the date of the election. We have passed that stage. The election is going to hold on Saturday, November 24 as scheduled.”
In his reaction to the judgment, a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fanikayode, described the judgment as a victory to the party, Jegede and the outgoing Governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
He said the judgment has shamed those he described as usurpers and spoilers within the former ruling party.
“The usurpers, spoilers and agents of darkness have been exposed, justice has been done, the PDP is back and we are now on the rise,” he added.

“Stop complaining, clean our mess', Obasanjo to Buhari

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has come after President Muhammadu Buhari for lamenting over mess created by previous administrations, saying he was elected to clean the mess.
Obasanjo remained one of his staunchest supporters, visiting him repeatedly and publicly defending most of his actions.

But speaking in Lagos Wednesday, Obasanjo advised President Buhari to stop dwelling on the past, saying since he was elected to change the country, he should concentrate on clearing the mess he inherited.
Delivering the keynote at the First Akintola Williams Annual Lecture, Obasanjo lashed at the Buhari administration for repeatedly lumping the country’s three previous administrations together and then accusing them of mis-governance.

“Now that we have had change because the actors and the situation needed to be changed, let us move forward to have progress through a comprehensive economic policy and programme that is intellectually, strategically and philosophically based,” Mr. Obasanjo said.
The former president also criticised plans by Buhari to take about $30billion loan to fix critical administration.

Lagos cancels monthly environmental sanitation exercise

The Lagos State Government has cancelled the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held every last Saturday of the month.
The cancellation followed a resolution arrived at in Wednesday’s Executive Council meeting which approved the need for a review of the environmental laws and procedures in the state in order to meet the present day challenges and to promote a clean and healthy.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, in a statement said the cancellation of the monthly exercise became necessary due to present economic realities in the country.
The statement said, “It is no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.

“In the last two decades, Lagos has grown exponentially into a mega city with the attendant huge environmental problems associated with managing a population of over twenty million people.
“But sadly, the environmental laws, policies and procedures being practiced in the State have not been able to match the phenomenal growth and the dream of a 24-hour economy, hence the need for the reform.”
Ayorinde said the State Government was aware of a recent Court of Appeal judgment.

He said that the thrust of the fresh initiatives, among others, is to promote holistic and modern solutions to the unique environmental challenges confronting the State, while encouraging citizens to voluntarily partner with government to achieve the desired goals.
It said, “After a careful consideration, the State Executive Council has therefore resolved that the present economic climate can no longer support the continued lock down of a mega city like Lagos, when the citizens should be free to engage in commercial and entrepreneurial activities that can promote economic growth and prosperity.

“Furthermore, Government will also accelerate the introduction of fresh reforms through the passage of the new harmonized environmental laws that will drive meaningful changes in areas of harmonized billing, waste management, modern Landfill sites, noise pollution, introduction of an Environmental Trust Fund and an Environmental Advisory Council.

“The Government wishes to reiterate its strong commitment to a clean and secure environment for the benefit of its citizens, and will continue to provide the necessary leadership to meet the environmental challenges of a mega city like Lagos. Lagosians and visitors alike are therefore urged to embrace these changes and imbibe a culture of voluntarily maintaining and preserving their environment to create a beautiful and healthy city that we all can be proud of.”

The statement added that the State Government would henceforth be tougher in ensuring expeditious enforcement against contraventions of its policies and regulations and as such, residents should voluntarily comply with the necessary laws and support government in its bid to have a clean and healthy environment.

Buhari to present 2017 budget Dec 1

The 2017-2019 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper sent to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari for legislative approval narrowly escaped being rejected again at the Senate on Wednesday.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly condemned the projections of the proposal in the document as unrealistic, even though it said the Presidency had set December 1 for the presentation of the 2017 Appropriation Bill to the legislature.

The senators, who took turns to criticise the new version of the MTEF/FSP as well as the officials who prepared the document during the day’s plenary, submitted that it should be sent back to the executive to include the “correct” figures showing the true state of the
economy.

The MTEF/FSP, which will form the basis for the national annual budget for the three years, had earlier been rejected by the Senate over the failure by the executive to include some critical details in the document.

The Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, had described the first version of the MTEF and FSP as “empty.”

Although it was not announced at the plenary on Wednesday if the missing details had been sent to the Senate before it began work on the MTEF/FSP, the debate on the proposal indicated that the executive might have sent the details to the legislature.

The Senate however agreed that rather than send the MTEF/FSP back to the executive, the legislature was bound to tinker with the figures of the projections to make the proposal “realistic.”

Ndume, who led the debate on the MTEF/FSP, explained that the document articulates government’s revenue and spending plan as well as its fiscal policy objective over a period.

Women AFCON: Ghana hold Nigeria to 1-1 draw

Cup holders Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana in one of the group phase matches of the ongoing 10th Women Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon on Wednesday.

The Falcons drew the first blood when Asisat Oshoala scored her fifth of the tournament in the 19th minute at the Stade Omnisports Limbe, but the Nigerians were somewhat too anxious in front of goal and missed several chances.
Ghana drew level two minutes before recess when Ugo Njoku committed a foul in the box and Elizabeth Addo made no mistake from the spot.
In the second half, the reigning champions piled much pressure on their West African counterparts, but the Black Queens were well organized at the rear and kept the scoreline even.
Oshoala should have put Nigeria ahead in the 63rd minute but failed to connect a cross by Francisca Ordega, and in the 77th minute, substitute Florence Dadson came close at the other end, but goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan timed her run well.
A brilliant move by Faith Ikidi pierced the Ghanaian defence with two minutes left, only for Ordega to fluff the opportunity with Desire Oparanozie unmarked behind her.
On the dot of time, penalty appeals by Nigeria were waived away by the referee after Oshoala was upended in the box by the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
The Falcons remain top of Group B on goals difference from the Black Queens, and will play Kenya on Sunday. The Black Queens will slug it out with Mali, who were poleaxed 6-0 by Nigeria.

I hope Messi never leaves Barcelona – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will need time like his storied predecessor Alex Ferguson to turn the club into a dominant force again, he said on Wednesday.

“The best manager in the history of the Premier League needed a few years to build such a successful period,” said Mourinho.
“If the best needed that time, it means that the others also need that time.”
– ‘Messi belongs to Barcelona’ –
“I am in the beginning of my contract. I am in the beginning of the process. Let’s go step by step,” explained the Portuguese.
“If you ask me would I like to be successful in these three years, would I like to stay here for more time than these three years, then yes.
“Because I am in the club that I want to be. So yes, I would love it. But I have also to deserve that.
“Let us see the evolution of my result. And if one day the club thinks I deserve (it), then I will be very happy and proud about that. I am just in the beginning.”
Mourinho accepts, though, that United fans will expect him to put some silverware in the cabinet sooner rather than later, although he is focused on putting his imprint on the squad.
“The three-year contract I was given is a fair period of time to give to me to where we want to be,” he said. “Three years is not just about the transfer window, though.
“It’s not just about that. It’s about my relationship with the players, my understanding of the player, the understanding of the players of my personality as a manager. A person’s routines, dynamics of how they work.
“That’s got to be key. It’s all about that. But if you ask me if I am a waiting for my third year in the club to have good results, no, I am not waiting. I am going to immediately try to do my best to get results.”
Mourinho gave short shrift to suggestions United might try to lure Lionel Messi to the club from Barcelona.
“Lionel Messi is every season the same story,” he said. “Every season he is going to leave and he never does.
“I hope he never leaves. He belongs to Barcelona. The beautiful thing for him would be to start and finish at Barca.”
United have no fresh injury concerns ahead of their clash with Feyenoord at Old Trafford, with defenders Chris Smalling (broken toe) and Eric Bailly (knee) and midfielder Marouane Fellaini (calf) all set to miss out.

We can’t meet ASUU’s demand – FG

The Federal Government on Wednesday said while it has met eight out of the seven demands of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, it could not meet the union’s demand for earned allowance running into N284bn, especially with the economy in recession.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said this while answering questions from State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Ngige said there was no way the government could pay the allowance because there was no money.

The minister said the government had conceded to the union the right to exclude endowment funds that accrued to universities from the Treasury Single Account.

He said while the government agreed to ASUU’s demand to exclude endowment funds from the TSA, that does not mean that university councils will not have right to audit such an account.

He added, “The other aspect of it is the earned allowance. The earned allowance is the only one that is not sorted out now because everybody knows and agrees that we are in recession.

“If we are in a recession and you are asking us to pay you N284bn, nobody will pay it because the money is not there.
