Ex-VP Sambo cries out: My house has been searched four times in six months

Ex-VP Sambo cries out: My house has been searched four times in six months
Former vice-president Namadi Sambo says the security operatives who raided his home at 1, Alimi road, GRA, Kaduna are desperate and are on a "fault-finding mission".

He also said his house has been searched four times "in six months".

On Wednesday, heavily armed operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) raided the residence and did not find anything incriminating.

But in a statement on Saturday, Umar Sani, media aide to Sambo, noted that the recent raid was the fourth in six months.

Sani said the visit of the operatives was unscheduled and the reasons of the search were not "specifically stated."

He said that at the rate at which the ICPC operatives were going, it would not be surprising to find an object planted at the former vice-president's home to incriminate him.

"As a law-abiding citizen, the former vice-president did not raise any alarm in the previous invasions in view of the fact that he has nothing to hide," the statement by Sambo's aide read.

"The recent desperation exhibited by some security agencies in carrying out a raid on an unoccupied residence blocking all entry and exit points, in a commando-style and coming along with a bullion van speaks volumes of the clandestine intention of the security operatives.

"It is therefore worrisome to note that the consistency with which the searches occurred and the intervals between them portrays a desire of a fault-finding mission. We are apprehensive that a repeat of such episode will not be surprising if an incriminating object is planted in his residence in order to wilfully and deliberately incriminate him.

"It is against this background that we wish to draw the attention of the unsuspecting members of the public to this phenomenon.

"The desperation of some of the security agencies is glaring by the number of times such searches were conducted and still counting. We hope it is not a way to try to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it."

Beyonce and Jay Z’s name twins names ‘Rumi and Sir Carter’

Beyonce_and_Jay_Z

With a big sister named Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay Z’s new twins were always going to have unusual monikers.

And despite the couple’s silence on their new babies – they have yet to even officially confirm the birth – their names appear to have finally emerged.

The newborns were revealed to be named Rumi and Sir Carter, after their parents filed trademarks to protect the names.

His muse Beyonce wore several custom made looks by the former Roberto Cavalli designer to the Grammy Awards this year, including those glittering gold stage costumes. But this stunning scarlet gown is the one we’ll be remembering for years to come!

Check out the plunging neckline and long sleeves on this dress, which perfectly fitted the pregnant singer’s figure. The colour is very striking indeed, and of course you can’t go wrong with sequins when it comes to a big occasion like the Grammys.

According to the website TMZ the company run by Beyonce and Jay Z – real name Shawn Corey Carter – filed legal documents on Friday to secure the rights to the unusual monikers.

While both names are distinctly unusual choices, Sir is the more uncommon of the two – with the name normally used as a title before a man’s first name.

Meanwhile, while Rumi is a Japanese girls name, it’s also the last name of the famed 13th century Persian poet Jelaluddin Rumi.

‘Sir’ also happens to be used in one of his most famous poems:

‘Bring the pure wine of

love and freedom.

But Sir, a tornado is coming.

More wine, we’ll teach this storm

A thing or two about whirling’.

Along with their boy-girl twins, the couple are also parents to five-year-old daughter Blue Ivy.

The 35-year-old singer and the New York-born rap star welcomed their twins into the world earlier this month and are both said to be overjoyed.

And Jay Z has been getting a lot of advice from his friends, including old pal Diddy.

The 47-year-old music mogul is a long-time friend of the New York-born rap star, and as the father of 10-year-old twin daughters D’Lila Star and Jessie James, Diddy has been happy to offer his help to Jay.

He shared: ‘Jay-Z is the one that gives me counsel, so I was so happy to be able to give him counsel on this. And the thing that I said is, you have to be prepared for double the love.

‘You are used to getting love from one child, but when you get this incredible love from two kids, and they’re twins, it is truly a blessing.

‘And may God bless him and Beyonce and their family and everybody out there that has kids – period. That’s what really runs our lives. But to have twins is double the fun.’

But when he was asked if twins were double the work, Diddy told talk show host Seth Meyers: ‘It’s um, um, um … I want to say thank you to the mother of my children.’

Buhari: Court asked to order Saraki to set up medical panel

A Nigerian based in the United States of America, Mr. Toyin Dawodu, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to compel the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to appoint a medical panel to determine the health status of ailing President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari had left the country for the United Kingdom since May 7, 2017 for a medical vacation.

But the details of the President’s ailment and condition have been kept away from Nigerians.

In his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/508/2017 and filed on June 28, Dawodu urged the court to declare Saraki as empowered by the Nigerian Constitution to set up a medical panel to determine Buhari’s health status “without first being a resolution of the Executive Council of the Federation.”

Section 144(1) of the Nigerian Constitution provides that such a medical panel should be appointed by the Senate President following a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of the members of the Executive Council of the Federation.

But the plaintiff, through his counsel, Frank Tietie, contended in the suit that “in the absence of a resolution by the Executive Council of the Federation” as required under section 144(1) of the Constitution, the Senate President could constitute such medical panel “to determine the health status of the President.”

The respondents to the suit are Saraki, the Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).

While he prayed the court to direct the Executive Council of the Federation to convene a meeting to vote on a resolution on the medical fitness or incapability of President Buhari to discharge the functions of his office, he also prayed for an order directing the Senate President to set up a medical panel to investigate the President’s health.

His prayers read in part, “A declaration that the 1st Respondent, Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is empowered by Section 144(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Altered) to appoint a Medical Panel to determine the health status of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, without first being, a resolution of the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) on the medical fitness or incapability of President Muhammadu Buhari to discharge the functions of the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

A supporting affidavit deposed to by a lawyer, Otika Stephen, in the law firm of the plaintiff’s lead counsel, described Dawodu as a US-based Nigerian.

The affidavit, however, stated that “the plaintiff is a registered voter in Nigeria. A copy of the applicant’s voter card is herein annexed and marked as Exhibit A”.

It stated that Dawodu was not against Buhari but decided to institute the suit in the public interest.

It also stated that Buhari’s health status was of national concern and that when his illness could no longer allow him to discharge the functions of his office, “it would be in the national interest to advise him to resign.”

The affidavit, however, added that the Federal Executive Council “is unlikely and unwilling to exercise its constitutional responsibility of determining by resolution” the status of the President’s health.

It stated that with President’s handing over to the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, as acting President, he (Osinbajo) “is fettered even in his capacity to fully discharge the functions and responsibilities of the office of the President.”

It said it was therefore important to determine the health status of Buhari and the nature of his illness “in order to advise him to either resign or be impeached.”

No fewer than 45 student delegates of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, in the course of the week, graduated from two universities in Belarus.

Three of them clinched first class honors in Information Technology from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio-electronics.

While a total of 29 majored in various fields from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio-electronics, 16 others trained in related areas at Brest State University, Belarus.

The graduation ceremony in Minsk was well attended by envoys from various countries with a Nigerian delegation from the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

The First Vice Rector of Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics Dr Siarhei Dzit, in his speech, commended all the graduates for their resilience and expressed hope that they will apply the knowledge gained in advancing society.

He said: “As one of the best international school in Information Technology, we are known to produce graduates with the requisite technical knowledge to meet contemporary challenges in the industry. I am optimistic that these graduates can firmly take their place in world class firms to exhibit their professionalism”.

In a congratulatory message to the graduating students, the SA on Niger Delta, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, commended them for outstanding performance and urged them to “exude the highest level of competence and excellence in chosen area of vocation”.

He urged the graduates to put to gainful use the skills they now possess to place Nigeria on the map in Information Technology and other advanced technical areas.

Court Slams N4bn Damage On Sahara Reporters Over False Story Against Saraki

A judgement of N4 billion has been slammed against the publisher of the popular online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, over series of stories published last year by the medium against Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

The judgement which was passed by an  Ilorin High Court judge, Justice Adeyinka Oyinloye on Wednesday, June 28, was in relation to some libelous stories published by the online medium against Saraki between September and December of 2015.

The Senate President had, through his lawyer, Babatunde Olomu, asked for the intervention of the court following the publications.

Both Sowore and Sahara Reporters were joined as defendants in the suit marked as KWS/23/2017.

Speaking to newsmen, Babatunde Olomu said that the defendants had refused to defend the case despite the service of the summons on them.

According to him, the first series of service involved an arrangement between the office of the Nigerian Ministry of Justice and their counterpart in New York, the operational base of the medium.

When that yielded no result, the counsel said the claimant thereafter seized the opportunities of a visit to Nigeria by Sowore to serve him at his two properties in Ikeja area of Lagos state.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Adeyinka Oyinloye of the court agreed with Olomou and granted all the reliefs sought by the claimant in the case.

The reliefs granted are as follows:

“the sum of N1 billion as general and aggravated damages for libellous words falsely, maliciously and recklessly published by the defendants of and concerning the claimant in the online issue of Sahara Reporters of October 5, 2015 under the caption “Nigeria at 55: Bukola Saraki and 83 Inmates Are Running the Asylum”

“The sum of N1 billion as general and aggravated damages for libellous words falsely, maliciously and recklessly published by the defendants of and concerning the claimant in the online issue of Sahara Reporters of Sahara Reporters of September 20, 2015 under the caption: “A polished Name for political immorality. Time for Saraki to Go!”

“The sum of N1 billion as general and aggravated damages for libellous words falsely, maliciously and recklessly published by the defendants of and concerning the claimant in the online issue of Sahara Reporters of Sahara Reporters of November 09, 2015 under the caption: “Bukola Saraki On a Shopping Spree to Buy Judges…Stop Being a Clown And A Coward Man Up, Face The Music

“The sum of N1 billion as general and aggravated damages for libellous words falsely, maliciously and recklessly published by the defendants of and concerning the claimant in the online issue of Sahara Reporters of Sahara Reporters of December 1, 2015 under the caption: “Arms Contract Scandal: Senator Saraki Blackmailed CBN Officials To Pay N250 Million Hush Funds”.

“An order for an injunction restraining the defendants from further writing, printing or causing to be written, printed or circulated or otherwise published of the claimant the said, or similar libel.

“An order directing the defendants to remove the offending publications from its website on the Internet within three days from the date of judgment and an order directing the defendants to publish an apology to the claimant on its online newspaper and in three other daily newspapers.” he said.

Meanwhile, Saraki on Thursday,   June 29, commended the judgment by the court, emphasising that it was a testament that the moral arc of the universe will always bend towards justice.

The Senate President in a statement through his special adviser on media and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, urged Nigerians to seek redress in court if they have been unfairly treated in any way.

“This judgment is a fulfillment of our promise that we will explore all legal means to seek redress for all the fabrications and mudslinging that Sahara Reporters has thrown at us over the years.

“This judgment demonstrates that our justice system can and will continue to protect the fundamental human rights of all citizens from being infringed by anyone.

“The ruling by Justice Adeyinka Oyinloye, will serve as a deterrent to all those who profit by propagating ‘Fake News’ to blackmail innocent citizens or curry undue favours.

“This judgement is definitely not a victory for the Senate President alone. It is a victory for all the victims of the falsehood which Sahara Reporters daily dole out to rubbish the reputation of innocent Nigerians, many of whom either out of fear, lack of the patience to consistently pursue a court case for years or lack of belief in the ability of the system to give them justice decided to live with the injury to their reputation,” the statement said.

The Senate President swore that he will not spare any legal efforts and expenses, both in Nigeria and abroad, necessary to recover every kobo of the cost awarded in his favour from the defendant.

“The restitution from this judgement will be channeled to set up a foundation whose aim will be to support pure and unadulterated investigative journalism and assist the families of real journalists that die in the line of duty.

“The money will also be used to support genuine publications whose owners are struggling to pay salaries of workers or meet their ever rising running cost. Part of the money will also be channelled to help lawyers who have been providing pro bono services to litigants, particularly, on cases bothering on enforcement of fundamental human rights,” the statement concluded.

Kemi Olunloyo Fires Biafrans; Says Nnamdi Kanu Collected $5000 Monthly From Evans The Kidnapper

Kemi Olunloyo is back… and this time, she has launched a war against Biafrans.

The journalist rained insults on the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu alongside all Biafrans. According to her, Biafrans are as “Dumb As Fuck”.

She further accused Nnamdi Kanu of allegedly collecting $5000 monthly from the arrested notorious kidnapper, Evans.

Read Her Article as shared on Her Facebook page Below:

“Biafrans are so fuckn DUMB. They think Fani Power and Fayose are agitating for them. All my brothers are doing are preventing a repeat of July 1966 when Ibos were slaughtered in #Makurdi and other parts of the north in revenge for Nzeogwu’s attack on the northern and yoruba leaders.

FFK and I LIVED IT! My father was 31yo and a commissioner in Akintola’s government. He ran to Akintola’s house that morning before the soldiers arrived.

My mom a mere 26yo secretarial assistant was the one typing the letters fast as she told me I was 2yo and sick that morning sitting next to her.

The letters were to tell the cabinet and others that the soldiers were COMING and they had killed Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa and Okotie- Eboh that morning. Meanwhile, in Agodi government house, the Premier had vanished and went to his private residence armed with guns in Iyaganku.

My dad was with him and told Akintola to leave! He said I will be an “Omo Akin” his last words meaning BRAVE TILL THE END. Historical archives say Akintola exchanged gunfire with the soldiers. MY FATHER HAD JUST LEFT HIS HOUSE THAT MORNING!!

Meanwhile on the Remi Fani-Kayode side at the Deputy Premiere’s residence in Agodi (still the Deputy Governor’s residence to this date) the soldiers arrived and were beating the hell out of FFK’s father with their guns RIGHT IN FRONT OF FEMI WHO WAS 5yo.

Femi, myself and my mom recounted this moment Jan 2016 over the phone last year on the 50th anniversary. Femi told my mom he vividly remembers. They then took his dad away. He later escaped death.

In all this 1966 tragedy, only Ojukwu and Azikiwe the other Nnamdi ESCAPED so u see why the Hausas got mad and slaughtered the Igbos. There will be no damn BIAFRA! You Biafrans must fight back and get the LAME NPF to arrests Arewa Youths. Osinbajo and El Rufai ordered that. Nothing has been done. Stop using that as an excuse to divide Nigeria and form the B!

#Igbos are extremely intelligent people. This entire Yorubaland will not be developed without them. If they leave, Ibadan’s economy alone WILL COLLAPSE.

#Biafrans, however, are smart but NOT intelligent people. Fuck off Biafrauds!
YOU WILL NOT SEPARATE NIGERIAGAIN! UNDER MY DEAD BODY!

THIS IS MY FINAL SAY ON #NNAMDI’s foolishness. You have the audacity to accuse politicians of taking bribes, looting and even DISRESPECTING GEJ the best president ever?? Who are u sef? Yet you allegedly collected $5000 monthly at IPOB from #Evans a classic Nigerian criminal.
Fuck you Kanu! I’ve done prison twice in Nigeria where its a badge of honor. Prison doesn’t await you again.
HELL AWAITS YOU!!

Buhari/Osinbajo and all Nigerians RIDE ON.
#OneNigeria.

I HAVE BLOCKED ALL BIAFRANS WHO INSULTED ME WHEN I WAS ADVOCATING FOR THIS MOVEMENT. COMMENT AND SPEAK YOUR MIND. THE LUCKY MORONS GET A REPLY from #AdaBiafra to #Ashawo. Your disgruntled change of my name.

FG gives Nollywood additional N420 Million Grant to support Aspiring Practitioners

The Buhari-led administration says it has released the sum of N420.2 million to the Nigeria film industry popularly called Nollywood to improve and support aspiring practitioners.

According to a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Finance, Patricia Deworitshe, on Friday in Abuja, the money, which is the second tranche payment will benefit 105 film distributors.

The Federal Government had earlier introduced the “Project Act Nollywood”, with three primary components aimed at developing the movie making value chain.

The components are the Film Production Fund (FPF)Capacity Building Fund (CBF) and Innovative Distribution Fund (IDF).

The FPF and CBF have been fully implemented, while the IDF, which is the third component of the project, is on-going.

The IDF covers online, National, Regional and community categories of Nollywood Film distribution and exhibition.

The objectives of IDF are to improve the distribution network of Nigerian Audio-Visual contents, cut down on piracy, create jobs, and protect intellectual property rights within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

N1.8 billion was approved for disbursement to 106 beneficiaries in this component, and N1.335 billion was disbursed earlier in the year as the first tranche to 105 beneficiaries.

Deworitshe said that before the release of the second tranche, the finance ministry had earlier carried out a successful monitoring and evaluation of the first tranche disbursement.

Fifteen community cinemas and viewing centres have been established through the grant and this has improved the distribution network of movies in Nigeria. The programme has supported 18 firms in strengthening online distribution platforms, this has helped curb illegal downloads and piracy.

Two hundred and fifty six permanent jobs and 544 temporary jobs have been created through the financial support provided to 105 beneficiaries by the programme,’’ she said.

Deworitshe said the programme had also aided the extension of the Nollywood Industry to sub-Sahara Africa through the funding of National distributors to expand their distribution capacity and network.

She said through the programme, distributors had expanded their capacity to lip-synching their content in French for onward distribution to the ECOWAS sub-region.

New York Bronx-Lebanon Hospital shooter identified as Nigerian

Dr Henry Michael Bello, the gunman who shot six people at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Centre in New York on Friday, has been identified as a Nigerian.

Some Nigerians in New York, who knew Bello, confirmed to the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. And the NYPD has also identified him to be a Nigerian-born doctor.

Bello, 45, shot dead a woman, on the 17th floor and injured at least six others on the 16th floor, before killing himself the New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neil, said.

Five of his victims were seriously injured and “fighting for their lives”,

Bello went into his former workplace wearing a white lab coat with an AR-15 machine gun hidden underneath with the intention of targeting the same individual.

NYPD officials said Bello asked for a specific doctor on the 16th floor but when he was told the doctor was not there, he became angry and started shooting at everyone.

Officials said Bello tried to set himself on fire before committing suicide.

Reports said Bello, who was hired at the hospital in August 2014 as a house physician, had past arrests for sex abuse, turnstile jumping, burglary and public urination.

In September 2004, he was arrested and charged with sex abuse and unlawful imprisonment after a 23-year-old woman told officers he had grabbed her crotch area outside a building on Bleecker Street in Manhattan and tried to penetrate her through her underwear, reports said.

Court records indicated that in September 2004, Bello pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, a misdemeanour, and was sentenced to community service, while the felony sexual abuse charge was dismissed, according to reports.

He was going to be fired by the hospital, after reports of sexual harassments, but instead chose to resign in February 2015 in lieu of termination, reports further said.

Reports from the New York State Education Department said Bello had received a limited permit to practice as an international medical graduate in order to gain experience so he could be licensed.

The permit was issued on July 1, 2014, and expired on July 1, 2016, while he also had a pharmacy technician license that had been issued in California in 2006.

He went to medical school on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

A photo provided by authorities showed him dead on the floor of the hospital, wearing a bloodied doctor’s coat.

Law enforcement officials described Bello as transient recently, with at least five different addresses since he left the hospital.

APC will determine my fate in 2019 – Dakuku‎ Peterside

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and 2015 governorship candidate of the party, Dakuku Peterside says perceived disagreement within the party’s fold was because of its now found attractiveness.

Peterside, who is the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, however, said the leadership of the APC would determine his fate in the 2019 general election.

Speaking in an interview with Daily post, Peterside expressed optimism that the APC in Rivers State would overcome its challenges, unite and work on retaking power from the Peoples Democratic Party in 2109.

He said those expecting to benefit from the reported rancor within the APC in Rivers State should think twice.

He said, “There is absolutely no rift in my political party, the APC in Rivers state. The party is united under Honourable Rotimi Amaechi.
“In various families from time to time, you will see people with different perspectives but over time there is an internal mechanism to resolve these issues and what is going on in the APC family in Rivers state is usual.
“We are a large family and that has nothing to do with the objectives.
“We are on a mission to uproot the misgovernance in Rivers state.
“And let me say here that my fate will be decided by my party come 2019.”

REVEALED: Why MTN dropped Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has aired on major network stations across the nation for over ten years and it has become a family game show. It came as a rude shock when news went round that its major sponsor, telecoms giant, MTN, pulled out of the show. Due to this development, the organisers of WWTBAM had no choice but to rest the show temporarily.

While several rumours have surfaced especially on the internet stating reasons why the telecoms operator backed out, Saturday Beats learnt from a reliable source why the show has been rested temporarily. The source also hinted that the show would definitely be back on air for its tenth anniversary celebration.

The source revealed that the main reason MTN backed out was because of the N330bn fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission. The source further said that the show would be back on air in no time.

“It is the fine that was imposed by NCC that made them pull out of Who Wants To be A Millionaire. The company loved the programme and wanted it to air but that fine was too much for it. It was not WWTBAM alone that it dropped, so many agencies working with the company were also affected including its permanent staff; so it is not about the programme alone. Apart from that, its South African arm also has some little problem that it is facing. That is the reason. However, it is just a temporary thing, once it has settled, the programme would be picked again. It is coming back but for now, it is temporarily resting. In fact, it would air for its tenth year anniversary,” the source said.

Abians Throw Pure Water, Stones At Former Gov Sen Theodore Orji At The Burial Of Dr. Elechi Nwaogbo

It was a disgraceful day for former Governor of Abia State, Senator T. A Orji, as prominent sons and daughters of the state Friday gathered to pay their last respect to the former secretary to the state government under ex-Gov Orji Kalu's regime, Dr. Elechi Nwaogbo.

The event which was held at Ikwuano local government area of the state had in attendance Ex-Gov. Orji Kalu, Abia State Deputy Governor -Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu among others.

As guests were pouring encomiums on the deceased, the gathering took another dimension as the youth sighted ex-Gov. T.A Orji at the venue and his entry was received with shouts of "we don't want you", "thief" among other negative names.

The former governor and now senator had barely sat down when artisans and students started throwing pure water and stones in his direction before he was later rescued at out of the venue by his fierce looking policemen.

Earlier in his remarks, Kalu extolled the virtues of the late administrator describing him as a perfect gentleman whose life was anchored on fairness, justice and equity.

He noted that the success of his regime as Governor can be largely attributed to the tireless efforts of the likes of the late Dr. Elechi Nwaogbo.

Also speaking, Abia State deputy governor stressed that the deceased will be remembered for his contributions to the development of the state.

Recall: INEC receives Melaye’s court papers

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has received court papers in a case filed by Senator Dino Melaye to stop it from verifying the signatures of members of his constituency who are asking the Senate to sack him.

The commission said that the court papers were served on it in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Director of Publicity and Voter Education at the commission, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the commission would study the court papers before taking a position on it.

“We have received the court papers. The commission was served on Wednesday. We are going to study the papers before knowing what to do. The papers do not mean that we are going to stop what we are doing now. However, we need to study them before knowing what we are going to do,” he said.

It will be recalled that the commission had last Saturday told our correspondent that it merely read the story on the suit filed by Melaye in the media, adding that it would not rely on newspaper publications to do its job.

The commission, therefore, said it would proceed with the programmes it had lined up for the verification of signatures of the voters who asked the senator to return home.

But Melaye’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), told our correspondent that the case was actually filed last week Friday.

He said the court might not have been able to serve the commission earlier because “Friday is usually observed as half-working day in Abuja and in other government agencies.

“This is because the workers go for prayers and probably go home from there. So, if the commission said we didn’t serve it earlier, it might be correct.”

The commission, after reviewing the case filed by Melaye, is expected to make a pronouncement if the exercise will commence on July 3, when it is expected to release the timetable for the verification of the signatures.

Melaye had in his suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/587/2017, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, described the recall petitions as fictitious.

INEC had on Thursday last week written a letter to Melaye to inform him about the demand by the people of his constituency to recall him from the Senate.

Kogi West, which Melaye represents in the Senate, has seven local governments areas.

Signatures and petitions from each of the local government areas were packaged in seven bags, which were tagged according to the names of the local governments, and submitted to the commission.

The local governments and the percentage of voters who signed the recall petition showed that Yagba West had the highest number of voters asking Melaye to return home from the Senate.

The breakdown, as shown in the petition is: Yagba West, 55.7 per cent; Lokoja, 54.8 per cent ; Kogi, 52.77 per cent; Yagba East, 52 per cent; Ijumu (Melaye’s local government), 51.8 per cent; Mopa/Moro, 50.4 per cent  and Kabba/ Bunu, 46.7 per cent.
