Nigerian Woman Jailed In Dubai

A Nigerian on vacation in Dubai will spend seven years in jail after a court  convicted her on Wednesday of smuggling and possessing around 3kg of methamphetamine  during her stay in Dubai.

The Dubai Court of First Instance imprisoned the 38-year-old Nigerian woman, simply  called E.A., for seven years and slapped her hefty fine of Dh50,000 after she was  incriminated of unlawfully bringing in drugs to the UAE.

"I did bring the substances but I did not know that it was drugs or a banned  substance," said the defendant, E.A., when she defended herself in court.

Pronouncing yesterday's judgment, Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir said the accused will  be deported after the completion of her punishment.

According to the arraignment sheet, prosecutors accused E.A. of smuggling and  possessing five bags containing nearly 3kg of methamphetamine.

An Emirati customs inspector testified that she suspected the woman when she arrived  at the customs counter at 5 a.m. at Dubai International Airport.

"When she placed her luggage on the scanner, I noticed some strange shapes on the  screen… I took her to the search room. When I searched her personally, I did not  find anything. However when I searched her luggage, I found five different nylon  bags hidden secretly in the sides of the travel bag… immediately she said her  belongings were inside the bag but she was not aware of the findings. She alleged  that it belonged to someone else," claimed the inspector.

An Emirati anti-narcotics policeman testified that E.A. admitted that she smuggled  the drugs from her country and was supposed to deliver them to her compatriot.

"She agreed to cooperate with us and help us have her compatriot arrested. We made a  reservation for her in a hotel in Naif … then she contacted her compatriot and  agreed to meet him to pick the drugs … after the deed was completed, an  anti-narcotics police team arrested the compatriot in a sting operation. Upon  questioning him, he alleged that E.A. was his sister's friend and he just wanted to  meet her. No drugs were found upon searching his house," claimed the policeman  during prosecution questioning.

Records said the compatriot was prosecuted in a separate case. The primary verdict  remains subject to appeal within 15 days.

2011 Elections Causes Brawl In NollyWood. . , , GEJ vs IBB

The president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, a...Image via Wikipedia
Wild speculations are trailing Nollywood’s disposition to President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for the presidency in 2011.The Goodluck Jonathan campaign team is reaching out to Nollywood in order to reach youths and other Nigerians who constitute the wide fan base the industry enjoys.

It’s alleged that the President is dolling-out money and other favours to Nollywooders to engage their support and that is rocking the industry.
One of such allegations is the N300, 000 honorarium said to have been given to each actor supporting the president. Some of these actors are complaining that the president’s agents short-changed them as they could have been entitled to more money.

Accusing fingers are being pointed at Francis Duru whose is coordinating the recruitment for the campaign team. It was also learnt that an advertorial and musical video have been produced and are on air in Abuja and Lagos. Francis has denied the allegations, but they just won’t go away.

It’s also believed that the honorarium is causing disaffection among those behind the scenes. Producers and directors who were excluded from the deal are complaining of foul play by the president’s campaign team. Dickson Iruegbo, a seasoned director thinks differently. He believes no Nollywooder should have collected honorarium and their support for the president should have been voluntary. This resulted in a fight between him and Emeka Eyiocha who collected honorarium.

Another supporter of Goodluck Jonathan’s bid under fire is Stephanie Okereke. The award-winning actress is alleged to be in a hot romance with the president. Stephanie who has always enjoyed a healthy relationship with the president’s family long before he became the vice president is also running another Nollywood support group for Jonathan. It was reported that she organized a breakfast meeting of top actresses in Nollywood with President Jonathan on Independence Day.

Some people even accuse her of using her closeness to the president to enrich herself and keep some A-list stars away. Some of her colleagues say she used her privileged relationship with the president to get Niger Delta states to bankroll her New York Film Academy programme she facilitated for some people in Abuja and that she hesitated a bit in calling the stars for the breakfast meeting because she didn’t want them to come. Stephanie couldn’t be reached for comments as at press time.

Actors of Yoruba genre movies, SBN learnt , are unhappy too that they were left out of the deal and are looking for a place “to perch”. SBN was reliably told that most of them are drifting toward the IBB campaign team as he is seriously targeting the grassroots. Saidi Balogun’s closeness to Adiukwu Bakare has been touted as a possible link through which the IBB campaign team would penetrate the grassroots.

Despite the fact that many actors are rushing to dine with the president, some we learnt have openly turned down his invitation. Among them are Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji . Meanwhile, Obesere, Pasuma, Osupa and Taye Currency and other Fuji musicians are all rooting for IBB

Over 100 actors and actresses in the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood have garnered support for Governor Babatunde Fashola’s second term bid next year.

The movie stars, led by Mr. Segun Arinze are championing the campaign for Fashola’s second term and have come under the aegis of Lagos Artistes For Fashola, LAFF. They visited the governor yesterday in his office at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State, South West Nigeria.

Those who were at the State House, Ikeja were Segun Arinze, Zack Orji, Fred Amata, Bassey Ekpeyong, Abubakar Yakub, Kingsley Ogoro, Sunny Mcdon, Fathia Balogun, among others.

According to Arinze, Fashola had done tremendously well and “is an actualiser. I have gathered friends who have made impact in the movie industry in Lagos State to come together for you.

“We have come together for the actualization of your second term.

I don’t care whose ox is gored. We will stick with you throughout the campaign period until the victory is won,” he said.

Arinze added that the artistes would release album and jingles to sensitise the people and ensure that they vote for the governor next year, stressing that “there is now a brand called ‘BRF.’

“We will go to the grassroots to mobilise the people, we will support you; you will get our backing and support,” Arinze said.

In his response, Fashola commended the artistes for their support during the 2007 electoral campaign and urged them to promote ideals that would better the lot of the people in the society.

“By sheer deed of commitment, you have found a way where there seems to be no way. You have helped to address youth restiveness and unemployment,” he said, adding that lots of youths’ talent had not been harnessed in the area of cinematography.

“How many Nigerian universities offer courses in cinematography? I champion this cause that Nigerian universities should offer courses in such area. Many of you were probably forced into acting out of necessity,” he stated.

The governor appealed to the actors and actresses to use their movies to shape and fight the ills in the society rather than exposing them negatively, citing several cases were police were portrayed in bad light in movie scenes.

“Maybe you may not pay attention to the values you portray but I do. Your work is influential and you can use it to promote the image of this country. For instance, our police are doing well. Any time you produce movies and you get to a police scene, they are always portrayed as badly dressed, that is the image you are sending out.

“Through those movies, you can challenge the police on how they should behave. We can tackle the issue where people are offered bribe and they reject it in our movies. And again, if you teach violence in your films, you will breed violence in the society. It is our job to remake this country,” Fashola said

Female Internet users are more engaged. On a worldwide basis, women spend 8% more time on the Internet than men. They go online 58 times per month on average, more than the 54 times per month for men. They also spend about 4 minutes more per day online than men (82 minutes vs. 78 minutes).

In the U.S., women make up about half the internet population, but generate 58% of dollars spent online. Interestingly, while men and women account for about the same share of spending at the online pure-play retailers (Amazon, Dell, Overstock, etc.), women account for twice the share (67% vs. 33%) of online spending at multi-channel retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

Women have always spent more time on social networking sites than men, but the percentage of time women spend is increasing at a faster rate than for men. Women have often been early adopters of technologies that emphasize sharing and communication, such as photo-sharing, chat and IM. Interestingly, women of all ages tend to become highly engaged in social media. While a smaller percentage of older women use social networking, once they discover it, they are just as engaged as younger women.

Women engage in several activities online that are more commonly associated with male interests. For example, they exhibit about the same interest in online gambling as men (so beware those female pokers that sit down at your table!). There is also a large and growing interest among women in online gaming, which includes many women over the age of 35. Additionally, the percentage of women who consume sports content is trending upward at a rapid pace, and is approaching that of men. Women and men are pretty evenly matched in terms of financial news content, with women visiting tax sites more often than men.
What’s interesting thing about these findings is that with few exceptions, they were true across the globe. When women are relatively heavier users of a particular content category, the same thing is often true in opposite corners of the world. That means any stakeholder in the digital advertising value chain – from developers to publishers to agencies – can use this information to employ effective marketing strategies and execute them on a global scale. It’s clear that women are shaping the Internet in some pretty important ways, and it’s time to begin thinking more seriously about how to seize the opportunity.

50 Cent sued over Before I Self Destruct

50 Cent is facing legal action from an author who alleges the rapper used the plot from his book as the concept for his movie and album Before I Self Destruct.
The In Da Club hitmaker scored a chart hit with the 2009 album and turned the record into a film of the same name, which he both wrote and directed.
Novelist Shadrach Winstead has filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court of New Jersey alleging 50 Cent took the idea for the multi-media project from his 2008 book, The Preacher’s Son-But The Streets Turned Me Into A Gangster.
In the legal documents, Winstead claims the rapper "infringed the copyright by publishing and selling an audio visual work (a movie released in DVD format), coupled with an audio recording. In many cases, the content and word choice used by Defendants in their work is identical to that used in Plaintiff’s book."
The lawsuit seeks an undisclosed amount of damages as well as all the profits made from 50 Cent's movie and album, according to Allhiphop.com.

Madonna joins fight against bullying

MadonnaCover of Madonna
Madonna has become the latest star to speak out against bullying, insisting she is "incredibly disturbed and saddened" by the recent spate of suicides among unhappy youngsters - because she too felt isolated as a teen.
Troubled gay students have hit headlines across the US in recent weeks after several allegedly took their own lives following cruel taunts from their peers.
And the pop superstar admits she is heartbroken by the tragic deaths - because it was her gay friends who ultimately made her feel accepted.
Speaking via satellite on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Madonna says, "I'm incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying. Suicide in general is disturbing. Teenagers committing suicide is extremely disturbing but to hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories... is kind of unfathomable...
"The gay community has been incredibly supportive of me... I can totally relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in in school. I wasn't a jock. I wasn't an intellectual. There was no group that I felt a part of.I just felt like a weirdo... It wasn't until my ballet teacher, who was also gay, took me under his wing and introduced me to a community of artists of other unique individuals who told me it was good and OK to be different and brought me to my first gay disco and ironically made me feel I was part of the world and it was OK to be different."

Woman Fired For Slagging Boss.

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...Image via CrunchBase

A Connecticut woman who was fired after she posted disparaging remarks about her boss on Facebook has prompted a first-of-its-kind legal case by federal authorities who say her comments are protected speech under labour laws. The National Labor Relations Board alleges that American Medical Response of Connecticut illegally fired Dawnmarie Souza from her job as an emergency medical technician late last year after she criticised her supervisor on her personal Facebook page and then traded Facebook messages about the negative comments with other employees. The complaint, filed October 27 by the board's Hartford, Connecticut regional office, could set a precedent for employers to heed as more workers use social networking sites to share details about their jobs. "It's the same as talking at the water cooler," said Lafe Solomon, the board's acting general counsel. "The point is that employees have protection under the law to talk to each other about conditions at work." Federal labour law has long protected employees against reprisal for talking to co-workers on their own time about their jobs and working conditions, including remarks that may be critical of managers. The law applies whether or not workers are covered by a union. NLRB officials claim the Connecticut ambulance company has an unlawful policy that prohibits employees from making disparaging remarks about supervisors and depicting the company "in any way" over the internet without permission. "This is the first complaint we've issued over comments on Facebook, but I have no doubt that we'll be seeing more," Solomon said. "We have to develop policies as we go in this fast-changing environment." The trouble for Souza started when her supervisor asked her to prepare an investigative report when a customer complained about her work, according to the complaint. Souza claimed she was denied representation by her union, the Teamsters Local 443. Later that day, Souza logged onto her Facebook page from a home computer and wrote: "Looks like I'm getting some time off. Love how the company allows a 17 to be a supervisor." A 17 is the code the company uses for a psychiatric patient. Souza also referred to her supervisor with two expletives. Her remarks drew supportive Facebook postings from other colleagues. John Barr, an attorney representing the company, said the real reason Souza was fired was because of two separate complaints about her "rude and discourteous service" within a 10-day period. He said Souza would have been fired whether the Facebook comments were made or not. Barr said the company understands that workers have right to talk about wages and working conditions. But he said it stands by its policy against employees discussing the company on the Internet, including social media sites. "If you're going to make disgusting, slanderous statements about co-workers, that is something that our policy does not allow," Barr said. Jonathan Kreisberg, director of the board's regional office in Hartford, said the company's policy is overly broad. He acknowledged that the law protecting worker speech has some limits, such as not allowing employees to disrupt the workplace or engage in threatening conduct. But Kreisberg argued that Souza's Facebook comments did not cross a legal line. "Here she was on her own time, on her own computer and on her own Facebook page making these comments," Kreisberg said. "If employees are upset about their supervisor and get together on their own time talk about him, criticize and call him names, they can do that." A hearing on the case before an administrative law judge is set for January 25. AP

Jesse Jackson Calla For African Reconstruction.Surgets The Marshall Plan.

U.S. civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson called Tuesday for an African version of the Marshall Plan, saying the continent deserved reconstruction and assistance, similar to that given to postwar Europe, after the years of "colonial rape" it suffered. However, Jackson later acknowledged designing a plan on such a large scale would require increased accountability in nations like oil-rich Nigeria. There, experts estimate as much as $380 billion has been embezzled from crude oil revenues since Africa's most populous nation gained its independence from Britain in 1960. "In order for countries to overcome disparities, they need to get fair trade and favored-nation trade status to cover the ravages of war and occupation and colonization," Jackson told a legal gathering called the Kuramo Conference. "The formula was good for European reconstruction -- it should apply to Africa." The Marshall Plan, put forward by the U.S. to rebuild Europe after the war with the Axis Powers, cost roughly $13 billion at the time. Jackson offered no estimate on what a similar program aimed at road, sewer and building construction would cost across the continent, but said Western nations had an obligation to the countries they once occupied. After his speech, Jackson told reporters that Nigeria had to demand accountability from its leaders. Its 50 years of independence was marred by coups and military dictators before the first president was democratically elected in 1999. Even elected leaders today face allegations of embezzling the OPEC nation's oil money. "Nigeria needs allies and help," he said. "Look at the impact of its oil-trading partners, who have benefited so handsomely from a relationship that is not mutually beneficial." Jackson acknowledged that he once benefited from Nigeria's largesse: he toured South Africa to protest apartheid in the 1980s with the financial backing of then-military dictator and current presidential aspirant Ibrahim Babangida. Nigeria, home to 150 million people, is one of the top crude oil suppliers to the U.S.

How Teen Was Beaten To Death In Georgia.

Four Georgia teens have accused in the beating to death of a fifth teen at a house party appeared in court on murder charges Monday morning.

Horace Damon Coleman, 19, Emanuel Benjamin Boykins, 18, Quantez Devonta Mallory, 18, and Tracen Franklin, 19, face one felony murder count each, according to Lt. Bruce Ferguson with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

They are accused of killing Bobby Maurice Tillman, 18, at a house party in metro Atlanta early Sunday. Officials said the party got out of control.

A judge at their initial hearing ordered no bail for the suspects until they can speak with an attorney.

All but Franklin asked for court-appointed counsel. His mother told the judge she had already hired an attorney for her son.

Before the attack, one of the teens reportedly told his friends he was going to hit the next person he saw, Ferguson said.

Sheriff Phil Miller told CNN affiliate WSB the assault on Tillman was unprovoked. He was a "little guy, 18 years old, 5-foot-6, weighed 125 pounds," Miller said about the victim.

"And they beat him up and stomped him and killed him," he added.

Police arrived on scene early Sunday. They were called by the mother of the girl who had hosted the party, Ferguson said. Police took 57 witnesses in for questioning.

Ed Stephens, who lives near where the party took place, watched the brutal attack from his bedroom window, WSB reported.

"I just thought he was hurt. I never thought that his life was ending," Stephens said.

Father And Daughter In Secret Marriage, Offspring’s Fate Uncertain

A secret love affair between a father and his daughter, which produced two children has left the man, the lady and the children completely shattered.

The shocking revelation of the intriguing marriage between the man, an Asaba-based former employee of the defunct Nigeria Railways Corporation (NRC), and his daughter, with whom he had two children in secret, has left family members in shock.

Investigations shows that Sunny (surname withheld) had, in the course of his job at the defunct NRC, worked in Lagos where he met Bola and a relationship ensued. The union thereafter produced Funmi after a number of years.

As fate would have it, sources said, Sunny, 52, was never married to Funmi's mother who was said to have lost contact with him shortly after Funmi's delivery and the demise of the NRC.

Fate however played a fast one when, years later, Sunny relocated to Asaba and ran into Funmi in company of her friends who had visited from Lagos.

Expectedly, after they had met during an outing, and following their mutual compatibility, their old relationship resurfaced blissfully and the union produced another child.

Her mum, who had refused to be part of the relationship which her daughter entered into without her consent, telephoned a few days later to re-echo warnings against marrying Sunny, not knowing they were already on.

However, Sunny's relationship with Funmi took a different dimension when Funmi's mother succumbed, and visited Asaba to nurse her second grandchild.

But to her surprise, Funmi's mother (Bola) found that her son- in - law was her former lover for whom she had Funmi. She went on to show photographs which she and Sunny had taken as young lovers in Lagos.

The discovery from Bola, Funmi's mother, that night created a a huge row that saw neighbours wading in to salvage the situation.

More investigations revealed that, after heated quarrels last weekend, elders of both families moved in to urgently end the union that has brought shame to all parties involved.

Necessary traditional rituals were said to have been performed with the full consent of all involved.

The two children produced from the incestuous union were handed over to Sunny's sister pending when Funmi and Sunny fully recover from the shocking revelations that led to the dissolution of their marriage.

In the event, Funmi is said to have returned to Lagos with her mother, in an effort to deal with the shameful development resulting from her marriage to her father.

A visit to their house at Summit  Road  in Asaba revealed high tension, as family members still gathered at the premises to bemoan the sad story.

One of them,  Mrs. Ifeoma Enachi, said the fate of the children hangs in the balance.  She said even now  they want to know the whereabouts of their mother.

Elder statesman in the quarters Chief Benson Aisudo said Sunny may be banished from Asaba even though it was a family affair.
