Sudanese Lady Sentenced To Death For Her Religious Choice Of Marrying A Christian.

A Sudanese court has sentenced a woman to death for apostasy the abandonment of her religious faith after she married a Christian man.
Hours after a Sudanese court sentenced her to death when she refused  recant her Christian faith, her husband told CNN that he feels helpless.
"I'm so frustrated. I don't know what to do," Daniel Wani said  on Thursday. "I'm just praying."

His wife, Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, was convicted by a Khartoum court this week of apostasy, or the renunciation of faith.
Ibrahim is Christian, her husband said. But the court considers her to be Muslim.

Her legal team can appeal the verdict.

According to the rights group Amnesty International, she was also convicted of adultery and sentenced to 100 lashes because her marriage to a Christian man is considered void under Sharia law.

"The verdict is contrary to commitments Sudan has made in its own Constitution and commitments made under regional and international law; Meriam has been convicted solely on account of her religious convictions and personal status," said Katherine Perks with the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies.
"The fact that a woman could be sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion, is abhorrent and should never be even considered," Manar Idriss, Amnesty International's Sudan researcher, said in a statement.

"'Adultery' and 'apostasy' are acts which should not be considered crimes at all, let alone meet the international standard of 'most serious crimes' in relation to the death penalty. It is a flagrant breach of international human rights law," the researcher said.

Ibrahim is eight months' pregnant and is in custody with her 20-month-old son, according to Amnesty International, which considers her a prisoner of conscience.

How Nigeria Refused International Help To Search For Missing Chibok Girls.

The president of Nigeria for weeks refused international help to search for more than 300 girls abducted from a school by Islamic extremists, one in a series of missteps that have led to growing international outrage against the government.

The United Kingdom, Nigeria's former colonizer, first said it was ready to help in a news release the day after the mass abduction on April 15, and made a formal offer of assistance on April 18, according to the British Foreign Office. And the U.S. has said its embassy and staff agencies offered help and were in touch with Nigeria "from day one" of the crisis, according to Secretary of State John Kerry.Yet it was only on Tuesday and Wednesday, almost a month later, that President Goodluck Jonathan accepted help from the United States, Britain, France and China.

The delay underlines what has been a major problem in the attempt to find the girls: an apparent lack of urgency on the part of the government and military, for reasons that include a reluctance to bring in outsiders as well as possible infiltration by the extremists.Jonathan bristled last week when he said U.S. President Barack Obama, in a telephone conversation about aid, had brought up alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian security forces.

Jonathan also acknowledged that his government might be penetrated by insurgents from Boko Haram, the extremist group that kidnapped the girls. Last year, he said he suspected Boko Haram terrorists might be in the executive, legislative and judiciary arms of government along with the police and armed forces. The waiting has left parents in agony, especially since they fear some of their daughters have been forced into marriage with their abductors for a nominal bride price of $12. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau called the girls slaves in a video this week and vowed to sell them."For a good 11 days, our daughters were sitting in one place," said Enoch Mark, the anguished father of two girls abducted from the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School.

"They camped them near Chibok, not more than 30 kilometers, and no help in hand. For a good 11 days."The military has denied that it ignored warnings of the impending attacks. Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, a Defense Ministry spokesman, told The Associated Press the major challenge has been that some of the information given turned out to be misleading. And Reuben Abati, one of Jonathan's presidential advisers, denied that Nigeria had turned down offers of help."That information cannot be correct," he said. "What John Kerry said is that this is the first time Nigeria is seeking assistance on the issue of the abducted girls.

In fact, Kerry has said Nigeria did not welcome U.S. help earlier because it wanted to pursue its own strategy. U.S. Sen. Chris Coons said Friday that it took "far too long" for Jonathan to accept U.S. offers of aid, and he is holding a hearing next week to examine what happened. A senior State Department official also said Friday that the U.S. offered help "back in April, more or less right away.""We didn't go public about it because the consensus was that doing so would make the Nigerians less likely to accept our help," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the issue concerns internal discussions between governments.Nigeria is a country of 170 million in West Africa that receives hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid from the U.S. every year to address a rising insurgency in the north and growing tensions between Christians and Muslims.

The northeast, where the girls were kidnapped, is remote and sparsely populated, far from the southern oil fields that help to power Africa's biggest economy. The abductions came hours after a massive explosion in the Nigerian capital of Abuja killed at least 75 people, just a 15-minute drive away from Jonathan's residence and office. Chibok government official Bana Lawal told the AP that at about 11 p.m. on April 15, he received a warning via cell phone that about 200 heavily armed militants were on their way to the town.Lawal alerted the 15 soldiers guarding Chibok, who sent an SOS to the nearest barracks about 30 miles away, an hour's drive on a dirt road. But help never came. The military says its reinforcements ran into an ambush. The soldiers in Chibok fought valiantly but were outmanned and outgunned by the extremists. They then made their way to the Chibok girls school, where they captured dozens of girls. Police say 53 escaped on their own and 276 remain captive. The following day, Jonathan was photographed dancing at a political party rally in northern Kano city, and newspapers asked what their leader was doing partying when the country was in shock over the kidnappings.

The Defense Ministry also announced that all but eight of the kidnapped girls had been freed, quoting the school principal. When the principal objected and demanded the military produce the rescued girls, it retracted its statement.Frantic, some Chibok fathers made their way into the dangerous Sambisa Forest themselves, where the girls were last seen. But they turned back when villagers in the forest warned that Boko Haram would kill both them and their daughters. The parents said the forest dwellers did not see any soldiers looking for the girls. And a state senator said that every time he gave the military information from people who had caught sight of the girls, the insurgents moved camp. The military denied any collusion with the extremists and said it had been pursuing every lead. On May 1, it handed over responsibility for all information about the girls to Borno state officials. For two weeks, Jonathan did not discuss the abducted girls in public. In his Easter Day message, he said only that his thoughts were with the families of those killed by insurgents and the dozens wounded by the Abuja bombing.Last week, angry Nigerian women, including at least two mothers of abducted girls, took to the streets in Abuja to protest the government's failure to rescue the girls. Jonathan did not meet with them. Instead, he cancelled the weekly executive council meeting to offer condolences to his vice president, whose brother had died in a car crash. His wife, Patience Jonathan, that night called a meeting to "investigate" what happened at Chibok, and said the kidnappings were engineered to hurt the name of her husband and his government. She accused the leader of the protests of being a Boko Haram member, detained her and released her after several hours. Finally, at a Labor Day rally, Jonathan made a public pronouncement that "the cruel abduction of some innocent girls, our future mothers and leaders, in a very horrific and despicable situation in Borno state, is quite regrettable." He pledged, "We must find our girls."On May 2, he set up a "largely fact-finding" committee to put together a strategy for rescuing the girls. Last Sunday, he raised eyebrows by saying on TV that he was "happy" the missing girls were "unharmed," but then admitting that the government had no new information from the abductors.Jonathan also hinted Sunday at why, apart from national pride, initial offers of help may have been ignored. Even before the kidnappings, he complained, he had asked Obama in two telephone calls for help with intelligence on the extremists but received questions about alleged military abuses. Jonathan said he responded that the U.S. leader should "send someone to see what we are doing" on the ground, and "don't just say there is some matter of alleged abuses.

"The Nigerian military is accused of widespread killings that go beyond members of Boko Haram. The Associated Press documented last year how thousands of people are dying in military detention, through the mortuary records of a Maiduguri hospital. And Amnesty International reported in October that hundreds of detainees were killed, tortured and starved, or even asphyxiated in overcrowded cells. On May 4, Boko Haram abducted at least 11 more girls, aged 12 to 15, from two villages in the northeast. One of them managed to escape. And the Chibok girls are still missing, in a conservative society where girls who are raped can be stigmatized."It is very painful. I know my daughter, very obedient and very religious ... she wanted to be a doctor," Mark said. "I was eager to see my daughter with such a hope. Now....I don't know what I can explain to the world.

Benue State Commences Exportation Of Yams To UK.

Benue state has commenced exportation of yams to European countries with the first batch to United Kingdom weighing 19.8 metric tons.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Donald Gbugho, who made this known in Zaki-Biam - the town believed to be the largest producer of yam in the state, has also urged farmers to take advantage of the development to increase their production.
He explained that the exportation of the yams was made possible by Xeggs Nigeria Limited through the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and therefore called on other interested companies to key into the abundant opportunities of Benue agricultural produce to do business with the state.
According to him, the ready market for Benue yams would ameliorate the plight of the farmers who lose huge sums of money on yearly basis in the past due to the rot of their farm produce as a result of inadequate storage, processing facilities and good market.
Gbugho further appealed to potential investors in the agriculture sector in the country to explore available opportunities in yam, cassava, soya bean, beni-seed and citrus to boost their businesses and to develop the state.
He advised the farmers to form cooperative groups to enable them capture regional markets so that the state would continue to tower as the food basket of the nation and indeed the food basket of Africa.

House Of Reps Deffers Approval Of Proposed Extension Of State Of The Emergency In 3 States.

The House of Representatives Wednesday deferred approval of the proposed extension of the state of emergency declared in three North Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe by another six months. Meanwhile, the House has elected to be briefed by the service chiefs on the state of security in the affected states before taking any decision. The House took the resolution after a long debate session. House Leader, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola (PDP, Oyo), had in a motion on the need to approve an extension of the emergency in the affected states advanced reasons why it should be approved. In his contribution, the Leader of the Borno Caucus, Hon. Muhammad Monguno (APC, Bornu), told the House that while they may not be averse to extension of the emergency rule in Borno, it is important for the Federal Government to adequately fund and motivate the military because, so far, the state of emergency has failed to yield the desired results. He said: One year of emergency rule has failed woefully due to the poor equipment of our military who are always left helpless to challenge any attack by Boko Haram. 'There was a time insurgents attacked a town and the Commander asked his men to launch a counter-attack and they refused, saying they would not be led to their early graves because they didnt have the necessary equipment to face the fire power of Boko Haram. Also supporting the motion, Hon. Tits Ganama (Borno), said If the emergency rule is not extended, what signal would we be sending to the International community who have come in to show solidarity with us in this trying time Chairman, Committee on Defence, Hon. Bashir Adamu (PDP, Jigawa), told the House that the Defence budget since 2011 has never gone up to 50 per cent implementation. A situation where less than N150 billion would be released out of over N300 billion of the budget would not help achieve anything for the nation.Kicking against the extension of emergency, Hon. Goni Bukar Lawal (APC,Yobe) reeled out statistics of casualties recorded in Yobe under the emergency rule as he explained why they are opposed to any extension. The emergency rule has only succeeded in breeding more terrorism in Yobe State, he said. He gave instances of the killing of students in a Unity school in Buni Yadi.A teacher was explaining to the governor how the attack took place and how the military behaved, the Commander asked him to keep quiet or be labelled a Boko Haram member right in our presence, and I challenged him to do that.Just yesterday, there was an information that Boko Haram were coming to attack but the military refused to go there. It was the civilian JTF who mobilised themselves to confront the Boko Haram and killed over 200 insurgents as well as seized and burnt over 70 motorbikes and two Hilux Jeeps. They refused to hand the captured ones over to the military due past experiences of them being released by JTF, he said. Hon. Emmanuel Jime (APC, Benue) and Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) anchored their opposition on legal and constitutional provision empowering the President to deploy the military in crisis situations without declaring a state of emergency. Jime asked:Has a state solved any incidence of insurgency anywhere in the world? adding the Americans have been fighting terrorism since 2001 as well as Mali. There is a faulty approach that has been applied in this emergency rule. Is there an alternative to this, and I say yes. The Anti Terrorism Act is adequate enough to allow the President fight terrorism without coming to the National Assembly for approval for a state of emergency because its not necessary in this caseThe Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, cited Section 218 of the constitution that empowers the President to deploy and determine the operational use of the armed forces in ways necessary. â€œIf by self admission, the President in his letter has said emergency rule has not abated the crisis and that casualty rates are on the increase, then what reasons should he advance to justify any extension he queried. The Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, in reserving ruling on the matter urged members to exercise patience till Thursday after meeting with service chiefs in respect of a resolution asking for a briefing from the Joint Service Chiefs on the situation with the abducted Chibok girls.

Gov Adams Oshiomole Commissions 300 Cabs To Replace Okada.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, commissioned 300 Comrade Cabs purchased by the State Government for the use of former Okada riders, to cushion the effects of the ban, in June last year.He thereafter drove one of the cabs, round Benin City, the state capital, picking passengers and dropping them at their destinations.Speaking at the commissioning, Oshiomhole said his most difficult decision as Governor was banning the use of commercial motorcycles in the state capital. He said, “I found myself taking a tough decision after repeatedly assuring Okada riders that Okada will not be banned in this state and when I said that, I meant it. Indeed, after my second tenure elections, I renewed that assurance and I know you were really shocked that after reassuring you repeatedly, you woke up one day to hear that the same comrade had decided to prohibit Okada and to give you a very short notice that was less than one week.“That was a tough moment for me because I believe that as we say, those of us who are Christians say that there are moments of temptation. There are things in government that you are never able to disclose even as you are committed to accountability and transparency.“When it became clear we had overwhelming majority of you honest, hardworking genuine Okada workers, labouring everyday to earn a living, we also found out that some criminals from some other states had infiltrated your ranks and in no time became even more in numbers. It was clear that many of the Okada riders didn’t know anywhere in Benin City, and clearly they were here for different reasons.”He declared, “The challenge for the decision maker is to see how you distinguish the genuine operatives from the criminals. That was a process that was physically impossible. I found myself having to say to you eyeball to eyeball, you no longer can drive commercial bikes in the city of Benin. That was the most difficult decision I have ever had to take since I became the governor of the state. It was a choice between what was politically convenient and what was in the best interest of the Edo public including your own selves.”Governor Oshiomhole maintained that in providing the taxis, “government gave 15% subsidy on the price of each vehicle and the subsidy is a grant that we are giving to each of the beneficiary. We are not expecting you to pay back to the government of Edo State”.Earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Orobosa Omo Ojo said government negotiated to reduce the interest rate by the bank from 21% to 18% as well as providing a comprehensive insurance. On his part, the Chairman of the former Okada Riders, Comrade Peter Adoroh appreciated the Comrade Governor for the provision of the first phase of 300 taxi cabs promising “We will remain with you come rain or sunshine”.After the commissioning, the Governor literally turned a taxi driver as he drove round Benin City, the state capital, picking passengers and dropping them at their destinations. The Governor who drove one of the cabs shortly after the commissioning picked some students of Imaguero College who had closed and were on their way home and dropped them at Mission road.Thereafter, the Governor picked two new passengers from Mission road to New Benin and charged them N30 as their fare, saying the N30 he decided to charge was as fare because it was a short route which shouldn’t attract much fare. He however did not collect the fare from his passengers. From New Benin market, he picked fresh passengers to the Mission road and charged the same N30 fare before he drove down to the NNPC Mega station on Sapele road to fill the tank of his cab. He paid N3,298:00 to fill the tank of his cab.
