DSS detains Tony Ezimakor, Daily INDEPENDENT’s Abuja Bureau Chief

DSS

The Department of State Services, DSS, that arrested and detained Tony Ezimakor, INDEPENDENT Newspapers’ Abuja Bureau Chief on Wednesday, February 28, has held on to him for the second day running.

Ezimakor had walked into DSS headquarters in Abuja at 10.30a.m. on Wednesday to honour an invitation from the security agency, but was detained.

He was shunted from one office to the other on Wednesday and asked to wait for a particular officer, who was said to have been away from his office.

INDEPENDENT’s management had made frantic efforts through its lawyer, Mr. Douglas Ekhator, since Wednesday, to see the detained Ezimakor, but with little result.

At press time, the INDEPENDENT’s management had received no news about Mr. Ezimakor, though the lawyer, Mr. Ekhator, returned to the DSS office yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ezimakor was not given his medication though the lawyer took it to him late Wednesday.

According to them, “we, hereby, alert the world to this real and present danger that Mr. Ezimakor is a high blood pressure patient and apart from taking his drugs, needs to see his doctors at very short notice.

“The implication is very clear; any outfit holding him for days is endangering his life. We reiterate that Mr. Ezimakor’s wife said the husband left home on Wednesday without medication and did not eat any food before leaving home Wednesday morning.

“She lamented that her husband’s health must be in grave danger, especially as DSS operatives have denied him access to his prescribed drugs.

“INDEPENDENT, therefore, is asking for its Abuja Bureau Chief’s immediate and unconditional release, otherwise his life is in serious danger.”

Underage voting are motion pictures from Kenya – INEC

Underage voting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fact finding team on alleged underage voting during February 10th council poll in Kano Friday dismissed the video footage as product that emanated from Kenya.
Briefing Reporters in Kano, the Chairman of the committee, Engr. Abubakar Nahuce, said
“all we have seen in the social media were pictures and videos that are not verifiable, some of them are not even in Nigeria, some are from Kenya elections which people are attributing to Nigeria,”

Engr. Abubakar Nahuce explained that “from what we have seen and discussed with you media men, none of you have seen any underage voter in the line or voting,” .

He disclosed that none of the stakeholders that includes civil society organisations and media presented evidence of underage voting during interaction with them.

Professor Nuhu Yakubu led INEC constituted the committee following the hullabaloo that greeted videos and photos of underage voting purported to have been perpetrated during the Kano election.

Engr. Abubakar Nahuce , the leader of the team who is also the INEC National Commissioner for Kano, Jigawa and Yobe states said they have not discover any anomaly in terms of underage as INEC is not investigating any other thing outside that like the turnout and the conduct of the election.

He noted that the team would write its report and submit to INEC headquarters for further action, as he stressed that it has not discovered any evidence of underage voting during the last council poll in Kano .

The team while in Kano met with Kano Sate Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) Chairman, the media and other relevant stakeholders.

Court rejects bail for Army officer arraigned with Evans

Victor Aduba, an army officer, who is one of the suspected henchmen of billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans was yesterday refused bail by an Ikeja High Court.

Aduba, is the sixth defendant and the army officer who aided Evans activities, in the ongoing kidnap trial of Evans and five others before Justice Hakeem Oshodi.

In a ruling by the court, Aduba’ s request for bail was rejected on the ground that the applicant does not live in Lagos and that he does not have sufficient reasons to warrant bail.

Justice Oshodi said the court considered the gravity of the offence allegedly committed, the offender’s possibility of interfering with course of trial and his antecedents before arriving at his decision.

He held that the sixth defendant would constitute a high risk, especially having admitted in his statement of being involved in illegal operations where he collects N20,000.
The offence which the sixth defendant (Aduba) is standing trial for is a very severe one. It would be wise to hold him in custody for his own safety and protection.

The judge held that Aduba did not place sufficient material before the court to make the court exercise its discretion in his favour.

“The bail application is hereby refused and is dismissed,” Justice Oshodi held.

Aduba, Evans and four others were arraigned before the judge on August 30, 2017 on two charges bordering on conspiracy and kidnapping.

The other defendants are Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okuchukwu Nwachukwu and Chilaka Ifeanyi.

Proceedings in the case was however could not proceed further yesterday as Evans’ lawyer, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, was absent.

While adjourning the matter till March 16, 2018, following prayer for same by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Titilayo Shita-Bey, the judge said he hoped that the letter written by Ogungbeje to seek an adjournment was not a ploy to frustrate the case.

Earlier, the judge, in a short ruling, foreclosed the opportunity of the fourth defendant, Nwachukwu, to cross-examine the first prosecution witness, Mr. Anselem Dunu.

The witness is the elder brother of the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceutical Limited, Donatus Dunu, who was allegedly kidnapped by the gang sometime in February this 2017.

The judge’s decision to foreclose Nwachukwu’s chance of cross-examining Dunu was because he was not willingness to cross-examine the witness by himself as he was not represented by any lawyer.

Prosecuting lead counsel, Shitta-Bey, had urged the court not to allow Nwachukwu’s failure to get a lawyer to stop yesterday’s proceedings.

She said, “The matter was adjourned for continuation of trial, particularly cross-examination of PW1 by the fourth defendant.

“That the fourth defendant is not represented by counsel should not prevent the cross-examination of the witness from going on.

“He has been given ample opportunity by this court to get counsel of his choice.

“Under Section 36(6)(d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), he’s entitled to examine the witness either by his counsel or himself.”

She added that on account of the fourth defendant’s delay to get a lawyer, the case had already suffered many adjournments.

Counsel for the third and fifth defendants, A.A. Uzochukwu and Joseph Otogbolu, respectively aligned themselves with Shitta-Bey.

Counsel for the sixth defendant, Emmanuel Ochei, however urged the court to give Nwachukwu further grace to get a lawyer.

The judge, accepted the submission of Shitta-Bey and others, and directed the court registrar to ask Nwachukwu if he was ready to cross-examine the witness or foreclose his opportunity.

Responding, Nwachukwu said, “I’m not ready, My Lord.”

He added that his family had arranged a lawyer for him, but he was surprised that the lawyer was not in court.

Responding, the judge held, “The court does not buy your excuse. It’s been the same excuse that you have been giving to the court.”

Justice Oshodi directed the registrar to ask Nwachukwu once again if he was ready to cross-examine the witness by himself, to which he again replied, “I cannot cross-examine the witness.”

Consequently, the judge held, “Since the fourth defendant has refused to take up the opportunity to cross-examine the witness, he has forfeited the opportunity.”

As Shitta-Bey said she had no need to re-examine the witness, Justice Oshodi, consequently, discharged the witness.‎

Parents of BBNaija “Double Wahala” housemate Bambam dismiss social media claims

Big Brother Naija housemates

The family of Big Brother Naija “Double Wahala’’ housemate Bambam has dismissed suggestions on social media claiming her parents want her withdrawn from the show.

This is due to the recent social media frenzy surrounding her escapade in the toilet with fellow housemate Teddy A.

Video images of what looked like the two housemates copulating have been circulating on the Internet over the past week.

The actions of these two housemates have caused a resurgence of a wide debate among Nigerians that focused on the immorality of the show.

BBNaija followers have emphasised on Bambam’s claim to be a religious and dedicated member of her church at the beginning of the show.

An alleged member of her church Stephanie Amaty took to social media to express her disappointment in Bambam, who she claimed is a chorister in her parish.

She said “I am personally disappointed in Bamike “Bambam” she is a choir member in my parish’’.

Followers of the show on social media have claimed the parents of the BBNaija housemate have requested to have their daughter withdrawn from the show as a consequence for her wrongdoings in the BBNaija house.

Contrary to those reports, the family of Bambam has released an official statement through Bambams Instagram page appreciating her fans and reinforcing their support for their daughter.

The statement reads “there’s been a false news circulating on social media about BamBam’s parents requesting for her to leave the big brother house to return home.

“This news is very false as the supposed person is not family, friend or even supporter of BamBam, I repeat it is completely false and as such should be disregarded.’’

The family completely disregarded the source of information of the alleged claims and appealed to viewers to continue showing support toward Bambam.

“We do not know the said user from anywhere and have no affiliations with her. Its the work of unscrupulous elements and it is what it is. Thank you for those who stuck out for us and brought it to our notice.

“We crave your indulgence to please spread this news and continue to show your support as we stand together to ensure victory is ours by Gods grace.”

Bambam’s initial game strategic partner Teddy A, had earlier proclaimed in the show to respect Bambams’s religious background by abstaining from any form of sexual intercourse with her.

Dasuki Loses Bid For Freedom At The Supreme Court

Detained former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki has lost his bid for freedom as the Supreme Court rejected his request to that effect.

Dasuki has appealed to the apex court, challenging his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) and prayed for the suspension of his trial pending his release by the government.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous judgment of a five-man panel today, dismissed Dasuki’s appeal for lacking in merit.

Justice Ejembi Eko, who read the lead judgment, said Dasuki’s continued detention was not a violation of any order for bail earlier granted the ex-NSA by both the Federal High Court and High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before which he is standing trial for separated criminal charges.

The court said Dasuki’s detention was not at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that put him on trial.

It further said the bails granted Dasuki in respect of criminal charges brought against him by EFCC have been obeyed having been implemented by the Controller of Prison Kuje on December 29, 2015.

The court affirmed the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier upheld the FCT High Court, where it said the EFCC was not liable for the detention of Dasuki by DSS.

Senator Sani Speaks On Reordering Election Timetable, Governorship ambition

The Senator representing Kaduna Central in the national assembly, Shehu Sani has given reasons the National Assembly decided to reorder the election process ahead of the 2019 general elections.

He also spoke on his reported ambition to replace Gov. Nasir El-Rufai at the Kaduna State Government House.

Talking about his reported aspiration in an interview with Vanguard, the lawmaker said, “In politics, there are things you want and there could be a decision later on what may be or may not be. In the process where reconciliation is taking place now, I think it is in our interest to first of all, according to what the president said, put our ambitions in our pockets and wait for Asiwaju to address the problems.”

On why the National Assembly re-ordered the sequence of elections, he added, “You see, there is an impression of the National Assembly which people have, that there are pro and anti-Buhari senators but I do not think that is true.

“Nobody was elected to be pro or anti. We are all senators and on issues, we vote or decide what our positions should be. Having said that, the re-ordering of the sequence of elections was informed by a number of factors.

“One is the fact that the hitherto position as it were, where you start from the president and end up with the states was one in which we had the “bandwagon” effect.

“Smaller parties felt that each time you had a presidential election and President Buhari wins, it means nobody will win any seat again; it is going to be President Buhari all through.

“So, now, what we are saying is that they should put the presidential election last and that Nigerians have the opportunity to vote for senators and members of House of Representatives; the ones they want, they elect them and those ones they do not want, they reject them.

“The reason for this is very simple. We are trying to avoid mass trials, mass convictions and mass burials of senators and members of House of Representatives. So, by that, we will now allow each person to go to his grave or to be acquitted before “Justice Electorate.”

Fulfil Your Campaign Promises To Nigerians,’ – APC Tells Buhari

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the United Kingdom, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that his government’s projects and services are based on the party’s manifesto to fulfil “our binding social contract with the Nigerian people”.

Its Chairman, Dr Philip Idaewor, in a statement, said this would “enable Nigerians see the values and visions of the APC for a new Nigeria where character, ethics and service to our country are values that will enable the emergence of the new nation we all desire”.

He noted that APC “remains the best ideological vehicle to rapidly transform our polity and our country into one that works and one in which the lives of all peoples matter”.

The chieftain commended Buhari for setting up a reconciliation committee led by a national leader, Bola Tinubu, stressing that the move would ensure unity and peace within the party across the country.

“APC needs to be in harmony with itself in order to attract the best minds from within its rank for national development”, he said.

“Reconciliation would also ensure that forces who wish to play politics with the lives of Nigerians under the watch of the APC government are not given the oxygen to foment troubles for political gains.

“All patriots and progressives in our beloved party must join hands with the leadership to ensure that peace, discipline and vitality is restored within and between the leadership and members of the party at all levels”.

Idaewor, however, lamented that, “many of our leaders do not understand the enormity of the challenges they agreed to take on themselves and therefore view all their actions from the lens of political gains.”

Abducted Dapchi School Girls Are With My Son Habib And His Friends - Mama Boko Haram

A human rights activist, Mrs. Aisha Wakil, has said that the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls are safe with Habib, whom she called her son, and his friends; and that Nigerians have nothing to fear concerning the overall well being of the pupils. Wakil, also fondly called Mama Boko Haram, revealed that a faction of Boko Haram had contacted her, confirming to her that it had the 110 schoolgirls who were abducted on February 19, 2018.

Wakil was a member of the Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges Committee in the northern region, set up during the President Goodluck Jonathan era. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, the activist said the Barnawi faction of Boko Haram contacted her on Thursday. She added that the abductors confirmed to her that the girls were safe, healthy and in good condition. Speaking with PRNigeria earlier this week, Wakil had called on the abductors to release the girls to enable them to be reunited with their families.

Wakil, who is said to have communication links with Boko Haram and respected by some leaders of the sect, declared that she was ready to sacrifice her life to rescue the girls. Wakil said: “They are even the ones that called me, and said ‘Mama, we heard what you have said;’ and told me that they are with the girls and they are going to release them. “I begged of them and said ‘please, let this not be another 1,000-plus days of Chibok girls,’ and they laughed and said no.

“I asked them whether I could come and stay with them (girls) for two days, but they did not say anything. “I can assure Nigerians that so far they are with my son Habib and his friends; Habib is a nice guy, he is very nice boy. He will not harm them, he will not touch them, and he will not kill them. “He is going to listen to us, and so far, he has indicated interest that he loves peace. And I love them for that and believe what they said on this. “They will definitely give us the girls. All I am begging Nigerians is to calm down, be prayerful, everything will be over by God’s grace.”

NAN reports that Wakil had, at various times, participated and played key roles in negotiations between the military authorities and Boko Haram insurgents’ commanders, which facilitated the release of numerous abductees from terrorists’ captivity. In a statement today, the Federal Government announced it has stepped up the search for the 110 girls to the neighbouring countries. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said top military and security officials on Thursday travelled to the North-east to add more urgency to the search, which has now been extended beyond the North-east theatre.

Bullets tear food basket apart

Madu Maji sits on a bench at the cattle market in Makurdi, central Nigeria, dragging his bare feet through the dust to stave off boredom.

In the pens, the few cows that remain are little more than skin and bone.

“Our cows can’t go grazing in the bush, they are dying now. Herdsmen don’t come here anymore,” said the elderly Maji, who operates the biggest cattle market in Benue state.

Because of violence in recent months, only about a dozen animals are sold every day, compared to hundreds earlier.

Nomadic cattle herders have all but left Benue state, driven away by fighting over access to resources and a new law banning migratory herding, an age-old practice necessary for the survival of the livestock.

The fertile lands of Benue, veined with a vast network of rivers, attract thousands of herders migrating with their animals in the dry season from desert zones of West Africa.

More are coming as a result of desertification but tension is rising in a country where space is becoming increasingly scarce because of a population explosion.

Nigeria, already home to almost 200 million people, is predicted to become the world’s third most populous country by 2050, according to the UN.

The central region has become the scene of almost daily clashes between settled farmers such as the ethnic Christian Tiv and herders, who are mainly Fulani and Muslim.

More than 100 people have been killed since early January, with 100,000 fleeing their homes to safety, according to the local emergency management agency.

After months of inaction, the Nigerian army announced the planned deployment of troops to several states, including Benue, to end the violence.

FOOD BASKET of the Nation

Adams Nicholas lost everything when “Fulani killers” armed with assault rifles, pistols and sticks descended on his village of Ancha on the evening of January 4.

“A big number of people came with their cattle and they started to shoot sporadically.”

“Two people were killed, our houses were burnt down. They destroyed everything,” said the 30-year-old teacher, one of 10,000 displaced people staying at Gbajimba primary school, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the state capital.

For miles around, dozens of dusty villages with burnt-out homes have been emptied of their inhabitants. Others live under a night-time curfew.

“We’ve always been allowing their cows to graze around our farms. But we can’t live together anymore. They’re animals,” Adams said.

In Benue, nicknamed “Food Basket of the Nation”, the crisis has morphed into an ethnic and religious crisis, with more and more Tiv openly expressing hatred towards the Fulani, whom they accuse of launching raids from neighbouring states and looting their crops.

“Our people largely depend on farming. We don’t have industries here. If you take agriculture away from our people it means you’re taking up their lives,” Benue’s governor Samuel Ortom, an ethnic Tiv behind the controversial ban on open grazing, told AFP.

“We tried every other options, dialogue, meetings, but the killings continued,” he added. “This law will provide peace, it is a win-win for both herdsmen and farmers.”

Since its introduction in November last year, the law has led to a standoff between the authorities and the powerful herders unions that still want a nomadic lifestyle and demand its repeal to allow their herds to return to Benue.

NEGLECT

In the meantime, the boundary is being enforced.

To see herders and their livestock, you have to go to the neighbouring state of Nasarawa, where livestock markets are teeming with activity.

The herders say armed Christian militias are attacking their cattle, arguing that the law has only emboldened them.

For months, pastors and local politicians have been encouraging farmers to defend themselves in virulent anti-Fulani rants.

“Herdsmen have never been the ones who attacked the villages. They only act in a spirit of revenge,” said Muhammed Hussaini, of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, showing gruesome videos of dead cows allegedly killed by farmers.

According to the union leader, the livestock industry has been the poor relation of Nigeria’s economy, which has suffered from years of neglect by successive governments.

“Most of the cattle routes are now cultivated by farmers, people even build houses on these routes,” he explains.

Yet for many Fulani, leaving Benue isn’t a realistic option.

Adamu Mohamed Juda, a 39-year-old “settled” Fulani, has only known Makurdi, where he was born.

“We’ve been living in peace with Tiv people for decades,” said Juda. “We were eating together, we were sleeping together. How did it get to this point?”

Customs Arrests Three Fake Job Syndicates

The Calabar Free Trade Zone in Cross River and Akwa Ibom Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested three suspected job syndicates.

The Customs Area Controller in charge of Calabar Free Trade Zone and Akwa Ibom Area Command, Mrs. Patience Burromvyat, said the suspects were arrested this month in Calabar.

She said the suspects were nabbed for issuing fake Customs recruitment letters to the public and swindling them.

Burromvyat added that the arrest was made possible through a tip-off by the public and surveillance by officers.
“Their method of operation involves opening a fake website on which they advertise recruitment purportedly by NCS to attract job seekers who are duped.

“I take this opportunity to advise the public, especially job seekers, to beware of Internet fraudsters who ask for money to give jobs.

“Recruitment into the Nigerian Customs Service will be advertised in the media at the appropriate time by the headquarters,’’ she said.

The controller said the suspects would be arraigned after investigation, to act as a deterrent to others.
