Scandal Hits Pro-Jonathan Group Over Allegations Of Rented Crowd.

According to Sahara Reporters,The Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, a group passionately campaigning for a second term for Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, has been hit by allegation of fraud, with some members of the group accusing it of staging a crowd in support of the president and refusing to pay them as agreed.

TAN has conducted regional rallies in support of Mr. Jonathan since August, with the last of its six conventions held in Kano, for the northwest, which comprises Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.

The Kano event held Saturday, September 27. As with the previous five regional rallies, the event was attended by senior officials of the federal government, and thousands of supporters.

Much of the crowd at the event was rented, some aggrieved members of the group have told PREMIUM TIMES.

The politicians, who are members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano State, and were drafted to be part of the TAN rally, have narrated how they were asked to rent a crowd for the president for an agreed fee, only to be left stranded without money to compensate hundreds of youth and women hired for the rally.

The matter is threatening to tear the support organization apart with the aggrieved members threatening to seek redress and to expose the sham they claim was on parade at the event.

The aggrieved agents now have a pile of debt to settle and some of them who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES say they do not know who to talk to about the money they spent in bringing in supporters.

One of the agents, Ibrahim Lawan, who said he is the Secretary of the PDP Youth Awareness Initiative, Kano, told PREMIUM TIMES that he was instructed to bring in 500 youth and women and to hire buses that will transport them to the venue of the rally in Kano city.

The arrangement, according to Mr. Lawan, was that each participant would be paid N500 on arrival, and N2, 000 for each bus. Those contracted to rent the crowd hired at least 50 busloads of supporters, he said.

The story changed once they arrived at the venue, he told PREMIUM TIMES.

“But to my utmost surprise and confusion, as we entered the venue we tried to locate the organizers but we could not see them. When I called them they said I should be patient as they would settle everything after the event. But almost immediately, we realized that the whole thing is a scam because nobody was talking to us again,” Mr. Lawan said.

He said they were left to source money and settle some of the youth who became restive and attacked them and their personal vehicles, and seized their belongings, including phones.

“This left us in rancour with over 600 angry youths who went wild due to frustrations of spending lots of hours, no food or water and also no available transportation back to their various destinations,” he said.

Mr. Lawan said he managed to escape while two of his guards were injured in the fray that followed.

Students in the state, who were also asked to put up a showing at the event, were treated the same way, he said.

Another agent, Bello Dan Alkarya, also told PREMIUM TIMES that he was asked to bring in women and youth to the venue and would be given N500 naira for each of them.

Mr. Alkarya said he did, but unlike Mr. Lawan, he was short-changed as only N300 was paid for each person transported to the rally venue.

TAN has no official representation in Kano, PREMIUM TIMES understands. Our correspondent, who made findings in Kano, was told the group has only two resource persons who are responsible for the entire northwest.

One of the officials, who agreed to speak, but on the condition his identity be protected, said he had received several complaints of people short-changed by the group after the event.

“I simply told them I am not an insider into the activities of TAN because I don’t know much about them. We are only two of us in the whole of North West Region and we don’t have any office. The only way I get to them is when they call me, I don’t know anything about them,” he said.

“In fact, the only person who holds everything is the owner of the group, Ifeanyi Uba. He is the one who directed one Jibrin to make sure that they get some people to bring in women and youth. Now you can see that there is a problem in the whole thing,” the man said.

TAN’s Director of Communication and Strategy, Udenta Udenta, told PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone interview on Saturday that the association was not aware of the issue and could not have been involved in such an arrangement.

“Kano rally was our last rally. The response of Nigerians to our objective and rallies was spontaneous and they are full of passion and conviction. From the South East rally to the North West, that has been the trend.

“However, stakeholders, including those contesting elections, can mobilize people to come to the rallies. It is not like TAN is doing the entire mobilization. It is like a market place. TAN only set up a platform to accommodate various interests. Therefore, whoever made the accusation (you are talking about) should be clear on it; he should state clearly who is responsible, when the agreement was reached, date and if not, such a story should be dismissed.”

Mr. Lawan said he and others affected have decided to reach out to the media, the PDP leadership and the police.

“Till now those in charge of the mobilisation and payment of transport fares and feeding stipends are nowhere to be found or contacted,” he said. “It’s indeed a pity to see how things are being organised by TAN Northwest (Kano). Please PDP, GDG and TAN members, come to my aid, I am currently under pressure and threatened by angry PDP youths to pay them their stipends.”

TAN has been at the centre of controversy before. During its earlier rallies, the group staged the events at the peak of the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria defying complaints and warnings from Nigerians about the possibility of helping to spread the deadly virus.

Rapist Penis Chopped Off By Angry Mob For Trying To Rape A Teenage Girl.

An angry mob hacked off the penis of a man with a meat cleaver after he was accused of trying to rape a teenager girl in India.

The incident took place in the north-western city of Ganganagar where the suspected attacker was found pinning the girl to a wall.

The 40-year-old man was taken to a butcher’s shop where he was beaten, before his genitals were brutally chopped off with a meat cleaver.
The man is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital and his health condition has been described as critical.

An eyewitness has said that the locals did not want to help the man because they could see his penis on the ground and knew this was punishment for sex crime.

“We have had a lot of intolerable offences against women in this country recently, with girls being raped, hung, and molested, and it’s time it stopped,” the eyewitness said, adding that “This sends out a very strong message to anyone like that if you do it you will be punished.”

A number of high profile attacks have been carried out on women in India during the recent years, where a 23-year-old woman died after being attackedand gang-raped on a bus in Delhi.

Carribean Islands Of Dominica Cancels Flavour's Show Because Of Ebola.

The Caribbean island of Dominica has canceled a contract with a Nigerian band scheduled to participate in a local music festival, citing worries about the Ebola virus.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Thursday that he struck the band called
"Flavour" from the lineup of Dominica's three-day World Creole Music Festival
out of "an abundance of caution." He noted that a total of four musicians
would have flown in from Nigeria.

According to him Nigeria is one of several countries in West Africa where Ebola has spread.
It is unfair to classify Nigeria under this category afterall the vast majority of more than 3,800 deaths linked to Ebola have occurred in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Military Jet In Near Crash At Yola Airport.

A military jet was on Friday involved in a near crash at the Yola Airport, Adamawa State.
The aircraft suddenly lost two of its rear tyres while it was trying to take off.
The jet is believed to be one of those being used for aerial bombardments of insurgents in the North East, including Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
An eyewitness at the airport at about 2.30pm recalls that when the incident occurred, there was panic among airport users and workers when the engine of the aircraft, which was already taxing, was suddenly switched off.
When the alarm was raised, airport officials, including fire fighters and security operatives, were quickly mobilised.
Some of them were driven to the scene in a white patrol van to ascertain the situation.
The initial rumour was that the jet was on fire, but the officials debunked this information when they returned from the scene. The development led to the temporary closure of the airport’s runway to traffic.

"Endorsements" Crisis Brewing In PDP As Govs Kick Against Stopage Of Their Endorsement By NWC.

The governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) yesterday kicked against the stoppage of consensus endorsement of their candidature and others in their states for the 2015 poll by the National Working Committee(NWC) of the party.
According to a comprehensive report by The Nation Newspaper,The aggrieved governors alleged that the NWC had acted in concert with the presidency to halt the endorsement gale.
They also accused the presidency and the NWC of “double standards” when the leader of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan had benefited from the same consensus endorsement.
Some of the governors also said they might ask the National Convention of the party to revisit the endorsement of Jonathan by the National Executive Committee(NEC).
The National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, had on Thursday voided the endorsement of governorship, senatorial and other candidates by the governors and state chapters.
The party directed the governors and state chairmen of PDP to cancel such endorsements.

With the annulment of the endorsements, some of those affected are: the President of the Senate; Chief David Mark, who is seeking the fifth term in the Senate; the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba(SAN); outgoing governors already anointed for the Senate, including Godswill Akpabio( Akwa Ibom); Gabriel Suswam(Benue); Emmanuel Uduaghan(Delta); Saidu Dakingari(Kebbi); Theodore Orji ( Abia); Sullivan Chime( Enugu); Ibrahim Shema(Katsina); Babangida Aliyu(Niger); and Isa Yuguda(Bauchi)
Others are: second-term- seeking governors like Ramalan Yero( Kaduna); the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Garba Umar; Ibrahim Dankwambo(Gombe); Henry Seriake-Dickson(Bayelsa), among others.
Those whose governorship endorsements have been voided are Emmanuel Ugwuanyi(Enugu); the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu(Ebonyi); ex-Minister of State for Health, Dr. Ali Pate( Bauchi).
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the governors were shocked that the PDP NWC could give such a directive after it had lured them to endorse Jonathan’s automatic second-term ticket.
One of the governors, who was devastated by the directive, said: “We have discussed among ourselves, such a cancellation of endorsements by the NWC is unacceptable to us.
“Whatever is good for the goose is good for the gander. If the NWC means business, the ban on endorsements should be across the board.
“We cannot be used and dumped by anybody or group. Why are they changing the game now?”
Another governor said: “Such a ban will spell doom for the party. The National Headquarters should not dabble in what is happening at the state. Are they just realising that endorsement is not good for our democracy?
“Look, endorsement or consensus-building is part of the game too.”
A third governor said: “The party should let us subject all nomination process to state congresses and National Convention. The party should leave the presidential nomination open and the President should seek second term mandate at the National Convention.
“Since the beginning of the week, we had suspected foul play when they directed all aspirants to come to Abuja to collect nomination form for any elective office.
“In any case, I am not bothered because the National Secretary , who issued the directive, was not elected by the National Convention of the party. The directive was a product of illegality, it cannot stand.”
It was gathered that some governors were being appeased by party leaders as at the time of going to the press.
“Nobody us targeted but we do not want endorsement abused in such a way that it will erode democratic process. We will iron our issues on this,” a top party leader added.

Sen Gemade Picks PDP Nomination Form,Vows To Defeat Gov Suswam.

Former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and senator representing Benue North East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Chief Barnabas Gemade, on Friday dared the Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, over his bid to seek election into the Senate next year.
Gemade, who was at the PDP national secretariat to pick the nomination form for the primary election for the PDP ticket for the senatorial election, said he would return to the Senate despite the wishes of the sitting governor.
He made the declaration in a chat with newsmen shortly after collecting his expression of interest and nomination forms for the position at the PDP secretariat.

The senator and the governor are from the same senatorial zone and one would have to make way for the other.
The party’s primary election for the National Assembly comes up on November 22.
“I am the current senator representing Benue North East District and I am going back in 2015. That is why I have come here,” Gemade said.

He observed that the race for the Benue North East Senatorial District would be interesting, with the governor’s bid to unseat him.
“So many people have come to me and said, ‘can you stand the governor?’ Of course, yes, I have stood many before. I will stand this one too,” he said.

Revealed! The Truth About Tiwa Savage On The Truth With Olisa.

Tiwa Savage who has been on the spot light for weeks now following her marital issues with hubby, Tunji Balogun, was a guest on Saturday’s edition of “The Truth” with Olisa.
During the interview session, she addressed a lot of issues including her controversial hit track ‘Wanted’ video, and how her success has redefined how women entertainers are perceived within a male-dominated industry.

“Every woman has that element and that period where they just feel sexy inside.I think I was going through a phase. Yea I wasn’t scared to show it and wasn’t scared of any backlash that was going to come ,because I know that whatever happens,I can always back up any controversy with my talent . The song is my favourite in my album. It might not be most people’s cup of tea in Nigeria, but internationally, they listen to that song and they love it . The guy who produced it is Oak, who produced “Your love “for Nicki Minaj. So I love the song. I’m influenced by Beyonce and by Mariah Carey by Rihanna, Brandy. I’m influenced all the time. I wasn’t thinking whether Nigeria was ready or not, I was just doing something from an artistic point of view.No regrets at all” She explained.

However, when asked if all is well with Teebillz, she refused to say a word, all she did was “zip her mouth” – even when asked about where they spent their honeymoon, she kept mum.

Mkd/Guma Constituency Updates:Suspected PDP Thugs Beat Up Party Elders And Traditional Rulers At Endorsement Meeting.

Party chairman beaten up by thugs.

Hell was let loose yesterday at the Makurdi residence of a party elder in makurdi where a meeting of Utyondu political leaders and traditional rulers degenerated into a bloody free-for-all fight.

The meeting was convened with the main agenda to get the Utyondu leaders to endorse Lands and Survey Commissioner in Benue State, Hon. John Tondu, as sole candidate for the Makurdi/Guma House of Representatives election next year.

But proceedings quickly took a nasty turn following a sharp divide between the traditional rulers who moved a motion for the endorsement of the Lands commissioner, and the political leaders who denounced the endorsement call, and who, it was evident, prefer an open field of contest for all aspirants in the race.

In attendance at the meeting were the district heads of the three council wards of the Utyondu clan, namely; Mbabai, Mbadwem and Uvii, as well as the leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the three council wards and the party's Guma Local Government chairman, Hon. Athanasius Atema'akaa.

Speaking on behalf of traditional authority for their respective domains, the district heads all called for the endorsement of Hon John Tondu as a sole aspirant in the election for the House of Representatives seat for the area, and called on all other aspirants in the race to step down forthwith.

They particularly singled out Hon Dickson Tarkirgir whom they threatened should he persist and pick nomination forms for the race.

But the call of the district heads was stoutly opposed by Hon. Boniface Ortese and Chief Francis Abunde who both separately faulted the endorsement bid on grounds of legitimacy and procedure.

Hon. Ortese particularly cautioned against imposing on the free-will of the Utyondu people to choose their elected representatives and implored the traditional rulers to refrain from getting involved in political matters, as according to him, such could only serve to further drag the traditional leadership institution in the mud.

But no sooner was Hon. Ortese done with his speech than a group of persons suspected to be hired thugs, descended on the meeting and proceeded to physically attack elders and other political stalwarts there.

During the fracas, the PDP chairman of Mbadwem Coulcil Ward, Hon. Tavershima Abunde was seriously beaten by the suspected thugs and sustained bodily injuries, together with a number of other persons, all of whom it turned out belonged on the anti-endorsement divide.

Speaking to this reporter after the incident, some of the persons who escaped from the venue of the meeting vowed to continue to resist what one of them described as the desperate antics of certain forces which are bent on usurping the popular will of the Utyondu people, using money as a chief weapon.

Another source argued that it is totally undemocratic to call on other aspirants to step down just to pave the way for one aspirant, saying that anyone eyeing elective office should be courageous enough to test his or her popularity in open contest and not seek to use money to buy the mandate of the people as it appears to be case with the failed endorsement bid.

One elder pointed to the example of Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam who, as incumbent governor of the state, has opted to go into open contest to seek election to the Senate in next year's election.

As it turned out, the battle for the PDP ticket for the Makurdi/Guma House of Representatives seat in next year's election may just be unraveling, but analysts fear events may get nasty if measures are not urgently taken to bridge certain cracks which are opening up, especially in Utyondu where the seat is supposed to berth in 2015.
