ACN. And CPC Merger Set To Float " (A.C.P.C )Action Congress For Progressive Change" As New Party.

In a bid to further concretise their merger plan, the contact committees of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)  and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) have agreed to meet on Tuesday next week in Abuja.

Among  the issues on the agenda of the talks are proposals to float a new party with the name as, Action Congress for Progressive Change (ACPC) as well as to consider modalities for arriving at the party structure.

THISDAY gathered that CPC merger committee met yesterday in Abuja to fine-tune its positions preparatory for the negotiations with ACN.

A source within the merging opposition parties told THISDAY Thursday that the choice of the  proposed name of the coalition party was informed by a consideration that the new party should be  remarkable semblance with the old ones.

It said the coinage, ACPC was formed out the names of both ACN and CPC in order to make it less difficult for electorates to remember and also to identify with some of the notable values the two parties stood for.

Another proposal billed for discussion during the Tuesday's meeting is the issue of how to evolve the leadership structures of the new party.

It was learnt that both ACN and CPC have accepted in principle that apart from the national leadership, positions in the new party at the state and local government levels will be filled by the parties based on areas of strength.

According to the source, the implication is that while ACN will be expected to provide officials  in the area believed to be their strongholds, CPC will automatically constitute the party executives where it has formidable structure.
A remarkable fall-out of fears and suspicion  that are fast griping members of the  opposition parties over the possible interference by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is that the merger committees have elected to imbibe secrecy in their activities.

As such, most of the its officers would not want to be quoted or attributed with any information on the progress of talks.

The bilateral negotiations between the two opposition parties is coming just as ACN is making a move to consult with the national leadership of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to see how they can join the merger discussion.

The consultation, it was learnt, is at the behest of the top leadership of both parties which is intended to encourage ANPP to try to deal with the internal problems of the party to put it in good stead for the merger.

Obanikoro Loses Appeal As ACN. Wins Ikoyi/Obalende Chairmanship Back.

Lagos State Local Government Election Petitions Appeal Tribunal has upturned the judgment of the lower election petition tribunal, which declared the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Babajide Obanikoro, as the winner of the 2011 chairmanship election in Obalende/Ikoyi Local Council Development Authority.

The Justice Opeyemi Oke-led five-man tribunal, in its judgment on Thursday, unanimously declared that the state's Independent Electoral Commission had rightly returned the Action Congress of Nigeria and its candidate, Mr. Adewale Adeniji, as the winner of the election.

Obanikoro had on November 14, 2011 filed his petition at the LG Election Petitions Tribunal challenging the declaration of Adeniji as the winner of the election which was held on October 22, 2011.

The lower tribunal on October 4, 2012 in its judgment nullified Adeniji's election and declared Obanikoro as the elected chairman.

However, the appellate tribunal held in its judgment that the failure of the lower tribunal to hear and determine Obanikoro's petition within 30 days of filling it and not giving a specific order for extension of time had robbed it of its requisite jurisdiction.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Babajide Candide-Johnson, the tribunal dismissed Obanikoro's petition, describing it as "incurably bad".

It held that the failure of the lower tribunal to hear and determine the petition within 30 days contrary to provisions of Section 14 of the State's Local Government Election Tribunal Law, had rendered the entire proceedings "a nullity".

The appeal panel blamed Obanikoro's lawyers led by Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN) for their decision to withdraw their application filed on the strength of Section 54 of the LGETL, seeking 60 days extension of the petition's life span.

Describing the lawyers' decision as "an unpardonable blunder", Candide-Johnson said the decision had no acceptable "explanation or justification".

He said the lawyers "did not first accord priority to save the life of the election petition".

A member of the panel, Justice Kazeem Alogba, said in his supporting judgment, that the lawyers' mistake was "a fatal somersault".

On her part, Oke said it was "a grave error", adding that the provisions of Section 54 of the law was not "a decorative ornament" in the law book.

Candide-Johnson also blamed the lower tribunal led by Justice Dolapo Akinsaya (retd.) for refusing to look into its record and accord priority to Obanikoro's application for extension of time but preferred to hear ACN's preliminary objection to the petition first.

C.A.N Blasts El-Rufai Over Twitter Comments On Jesus And Mary Magdalene.

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai
The Christian Association of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja reacted to the allusion to Jesus Christ by a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, on a social media.
The body condemned el-Rufai, saying he was only tring to whip up sentiments around religion for a selfish agenda.
CAN urged religious leaders and political associates to advise him on the need to be sober and circumspect, in his comments to avoid setting the country on fire."
The organisation, which also asked President Goodluck Jonathan to check the former minister, added that from his unbridled assault on the Christian faith, el-Rufai was capable of "setting the country on fire."
The ex-minister had, in an attempt to discredit the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe; and Presidential Adviser on Media and Publcity, Dr.  Reuben Abati, tweeted, ""@zebbook: If Jesus criticises Jonathan's govt, Maku/Abati/Okupe will say he slept with Mary Magdalene."….LWKMD….."
The sarcastic post elicited angry reactions from his followers on Twitter and Facebook friends, who saw his comment as blasphemous. The twitter post sparked public outrage on the social media so much that he had to offer an apology on Twitter and Facebook.
His apology stated, "Hello friends. I have been travelling and trying to catch some sleep in between the last 24 hours and missed all the furore arising from my retweet of Ogunyemi Bukola's (@zeebook) joke, Maku et al and Jesus. I must say I am taken aback by the extent of desperate misrepresentation of what was an innocuous attempt to show the godlessness of the Jonathanians to denigrate anyone that dares to ask them to be accountable.
"To those who were genuinely offended by the retweet, I apologise. I did not meant to offend anyone, neither did the @zeebook I know and featured as one of the Young Voices in my Friday Column. Jesus or Isa Alaihis Salaam is a respected prophet of Islam. Every Muslim accepts this in addition to his miraculous virgin birth. It is therefore absurd for any Muslim believer to disrespect Jesus Christ.
"I hope those in this class will see my point of view and accept my apologies for any offense or disappointment caused. And I advise everyone to read @zeebook's timeline and mine to read exactly what was tweeted, rather than the second-hand reports of certain people who always twist whatever I write or not write to achieve their morally-repugnant objectives."
The General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake, who read the assocation's first official reaction on the alleged careless utterance to journalists, had described the statement by the former minister as reckless and a reflection of deep-seated moral bankruptcy.
He said, "We must not allow him to turn Nigeria into a cauldron of fire by his reckless, bigoted and twisted commentaries about our Lord and our faith, and we must view him for exactly what he is.

Atiku Says Stiffer Laws Will Prevent White-collar Criminals” In The Country.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to make the anti-corruption laws stiffer.
Mr. Abubakar, in a statement by his media office, Wednesday, said stiffer anti-corruption laws will serve as deterrence against white-collar criminals in the country.
Reacting to the public outrage that greeted the two-year sentence passed on a pension crime convict, John Yusufu, the former Vice President explained that the issue brought to light the major defects of the anti-corruption laws.
Mr. Yusufu was freed after paying fine of N250, 000 on each of the three counts charge he pleaded guilty to. He was tried alongside five others on a 20-count charge of stealing N33 billion.
Mr. Abubakar said the anti-graft law used was too weak and more than a decade after, it is high time the provisions of the law are reviewed to strengthen the commission and the anti-graft war.
"President Obasanjo submitted a stiffer draft law which, however, was watered down by the then National Assembly," Mr. Abubakar said.
He said rather than trading blames, Nigerians should also look at the weaknesses in these laws and call for urgent review of the laws.
Mr. Abubakar said the purpose of punishment is deterrence and the ultimate desire to produce remorse in the hearts and minds of offenders. This, however, could not be achieved when the punishment is made so light as to make criminality attractive, he said.
He said the situation where majority believe the law is designed to suppress the poor or petty offenders is bad for the campaign against anti-corruption. He particularly warned that the recent outrage over the light conviction of the pension offender could send the wrong signal to the international community about the seriousness or sincerity of Nigeria to fight corruption.
The former Vice President maintained that the existing penal provisions of the anti-corruption laws make it impossible to impose punishments that fit the gravity of the offences committed by white-collar criminals.

Alicia and her husband Swizz Beatz love a "Creative Director" title don't they?  They have yet another one to add to their arson.
At today's Blackberry 10 launch event at Pier 36 in NYC (pictured above), RIM's chief executive, Thorsten Heins, named the androgynous dressed "Girl On Fire" singer as the Blackberry phone company's Global Creative Director.  Likely a move to rev up publicity for the brand.

Steps To A Healthy Pregnancy.

Now that you know you're pregnant, it's more important than ever to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. You can boost your chances of having a problem free pregnancy and a healthy baby by following a few simple guidelines.

Get early prenatal care

Good prenatal care is essential for you and your baby. Call your healthcare provider right away and schedule your first prenatal visit, During that visit you'll be screened for certain conditions that could lead to complications.

If you haven't yet chosen a provider, get started now. Finding the right person whether you're looking for a doctor or a midwife can take a while. In the meantime, let your current caregiver know if you're taking medication or have any medical concerns.

Watch what you eat

Now that you're eating for two, you may be surprised to learn that you only need about 300 additional calories per day. Make sure you get plenty of protein. You now need 70 grams a day compared to 45 grams before you got pregnant. And while your calcium requirement remains the same, it's more important than ever that you meet it, which is a challenge for many women.

You'll want to steer clear of undercooked eggs and meat, unpasteurized dairy products and juices, raw seafood, and cold deli meats to avoid ingesting bacteria that could harm your baby. Also avoid certain fish that may contain high levels of mercury or other contaminants.

Take prenatal vitamins

Most prenatal supplements contain more folic acid and iron than you'll find in a standard multivitamin.

It's important to get enough folic acid before conception and during early pregnancy. Folic acid greatly reduces your baby's risk of developing neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida.

Ideally, you should start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid at least one month before becoming pregnant. Once your pregnancy is confirmed, up your daily dose to 600 mcg.

You also need to make sure you're getting enough iron. Your iron requirement increases significantly during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters.

But more is not necessarily better taking too much of certain things can actually be harmful. Avoid megadoses of any vitamin, and don't take any additional supplements or herbal preparations without your caregiver's okay

Exercise regularly

A good exercise program can give you the strength and endurance you'll need to carry the weight you gain during pregnancy, help prevent or ease aches and pains, improve sluggish circulation in your legs, and help you handle the physical stress of labor. It will also make getting back into shape after your baby's born much easier.

What's more, exercise is a great way to reduce stress, and some research suggests that staying active can boost your level of serotonin, a brain chemical linked to mood.

Just remember not to push yourself too hard or let yourself get overheated or dehydrated. (You'll also need to avoid hot tubs and saunas while you're pregnant.)

Get some rest

The fatigue you feel in the first and third trimesters is your body's way of telling you to slow down. So listen up and take it easy as much as you can. If you can't swing a nap in the middle of the day, give yourself a break and let your other responsibilities slide a little. If you can't sleep, at least put your feet up and read a book or leaf through a magazine.

Relaxation techniques such as yoga, stretching, deep breathing, and massage are all great ways to combat stress and get a better night's sleep.

Just say no to alcohol

Don't drink while you're pregnant: Any alcohol you drink reaches your baby rapidly through your bloodstream, crossing the placenta, and your baby can end up with higher levels of blood alcohol than you have.

As little as one drink a day can increase your odds of having a low-birthweight baby and increase your child's risk for problems with learning, speech, attention span, language, and hyperactivity. And some research has shown that expectant moms who have as little as one drink a week are more likely than nondrinkers to have children who later exhibit aggressive and delinquent behavior.

Women who have more than two drinks a day are at greater risk for giving birth to a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Children born with this condition suffer from mental and growth retardation, behavioral problems, and facial and heart defects.

Drinking also increases your risk for miscarriage and stillbirth. So play it safe — avoid alcohol completely and have a nonalcoholic drink instead. Let your caregiver know if you're having trouble giving up alcohol, so you can get help.

Senate Orders CBN To Recover N35.5bn From Jimoh Ibrahim

The Senate yesterday ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to recover its N35.5 billion intervention fund disbursed to Air Nigeria, owned by a business mogul, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim.
The Senate had at its plenary yesterday accused Ibrahim of diverting the fund to finance other concerns other than its original mandate.
These were fallouts of the Senate adoption of the probe report of a joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, carried out on the fatal air crash involving Dana Airline on June 3, 2012.
The probe report earlier adopted by the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation also recommended the removal of the Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren over "professional negligence and incompetence" resulting in the fatal Dana plane crash that claimed 153 lives of passengers on a scheduled trip from Abuja to Lagos.
The Senate report also directed that Dana's current Air Operating Certificate (AOC) should be revoked on the ground that it was not issued in compliance with NCAA's Civil Regulations Guideline 2009.
The report recommended that NCAA inspector, Engineer Suleiman Akwuh who did pre-arrival inspection on the ill-fated Dana Aircraft without prerequisite professional qualification should be dismissed from service. Also, that Demuren who approved and deployed the officer should be sanctioned for professional negligence. The report reads in part, "(a) NCAA under the leadership of the current Director-General, Dr. Harold Demuren brought in MD83 to operate in Nigeria even when there is no licensed engineer rated on the aircraft.
(b) For the period under review Dana operated 14 air returns caused by system failure which is a sufficient indication of imminent danger.
(c) Up to the time of this report, NCAA is still without any licensed engineer type-rated on MD83 yet it is going ahead with technical audit on Dana operations with a view to restore its license. This constitutes negligence.

EFCC Arraigns House Of Rep Member Gebi Over Dud Cheques Worth N125m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today arraigned Aliyu Gebi of the House of Representatives before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja on a 13-count charge of issuing dud cheques worth over 125 million Naira to one Usman Mustapha.
According to the EFCC, one of the charges reads as follows: "That you, Hon. Aliyu Gebi, being the owner and sole signatory of Craft Technology Ltd and Craft Technology Ltd on or about the 12/01/2012 at Abuja Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory did obtain credit by issuing a UBA Plc cheque No. 00091852 in the sum of N10,000.000.00 (Ten Million naira)  only in favour of Musty Petroleum Ltd. which when presented within three months was dishonored on the ground that there was insufficient fund in the account and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 1 (b) (I)  of the dishonored cheque ( offences) Act, 2004 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria."

Justice Abba Mohammed granted the accused person bail on self-recognition and ordered that he deposit his international passport with the EFCC and to report to the Commission whenever he is needed.
Trial was set for February 19, 2013.

This perfume is also inspired by the smell of a baby and is ‘designed to cuddle and pamper every little boy and girl’, which means it’s fine for delicate skin, is unisex, but ultimately, mimics the smell of a baby’s skin.”
Believe it or not Dolce & Gabbana isn’t the first company to try such a tactic, back in the 1980s Love’s Baby Soft also released a baby product to enhance a little one’s smell. In 2010 a ton of “Eau de Enfant” products reached market, including several by design houses Burberry and Bvlgari. In this case Dolce & Gabban refers to its product as “scented water” and not perfume.
While the product is alcohol.
free, a full list of ingredients has not been released which could cause many cautious parents to shy away from the baby perfume product.
It is unclear at this time how the perfume “enhances” a babies smell while keeping their natural newborn baby scent.
Because the baby perfume is made by Dolce & Gabbana it is not cheap at $45 per bottle.
The biggest sell for Dolce & Gabbana at this time appears to be its hopes that parents who already associated themselves with the brand will attempt to carry that association over to their children.
Will you be purchased the company’s “scented water” product for use on your child

Court Orders Girl To Refund N570,00 Dowry Paid On Her Over Frudulent Marriage.

A Nigerian court based in the capital Abuja has ordered a 16-year-old girl, Maryam Suleiman, and her parents to refund N570,000(about $4,000) to her husband, Mukailu Naibi, over a fraudulent marriage.
The judge in the Area Court sitting in Lugbe, Haruna Masanawa, ruled that Suleiman and her parents must refund the money to Naibi within 30 days. Masanawa also ordered that Naibi’s estranged wife, who had filed for divorce, must remain married to him pending the full refund of the amount.
"Based on the evidence before me, the court is convinced that the plaintiff’s parents are dubious people that no child should be proud of. They collected money from different suitors, all with the fraudulent intention of marrying their daughter out to them, all of which turned out to be fake promises. This honourable court hereby orders the plaintiff to pay the defendant the sum of N570,000 before divorce is granted to her,’" Masanawa said.
Naibi of Keke village, Kaduna, whose wife allegedly starved him of sex for two years of their marriage, had demanded N1. 2 million as compensation from the wife’s parents before he would agree to his wife’s request for divorce. Naibi, 37, while testifying in the case, said the amount covered the bride price he paid before marrying Suleiman. He told the court that the amount also covered the cost of damage done to his house after Suleiman set it on fire before filing for divorce. Naibi tendered written documents with records of all expenses made on his estranged wife and her parents, in addition to presenting a witness who testified in his favour. He told the court that his wife had refused to make love to him since they got married two years ago.
"Your worship, since we got married two years ago, my wife never allowed me to make love to her for once and all my attempts to do it always led to fighting. I married her out of love and I still love her, but with this development, I have no choice, but to ask the court to grant her divorce wish for the sake of peace," Naibi said.
In her testimony, Suleiman said her husband had made love to her once but she was not impressed and so wanted divorce. "I don’t love him. I don’t love anybody who bears his name and I hate anybody who loves him," she told the court. Naibi’s in-laws denied most of his claims.

Woman Who Killed Her Neighbour To Be Executed By Lethal Injection.

A rare female execution is scheduled in Texas. Kimberly McCarthy, who was convicted of murdering her neighbor in 1997, is scheduled to die by lethal injection.
According to Reuters, McCarthy will be the first female to face execution in more than two years. She will be the 13 female since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976 to die by execution
Richard Dieter, executive director of Death Penalty Information Center, said:
“Although women commit about 10 percent of murders, capital cases also require some aggravating factor like rape, robbery, or physical abuse. It’s unclear whether jurors or prosecutors may be more lenient in potential prosecutions of women, since there are relatively few.”
According to the Star Telegram, McCarthy entered the home of Dorothy Booth on July 21, 1997 telling her neighbor that she wanted to borrow some sugar. She then killed booth and chopped off her finger in order to steal her diamond ring. Prosecutors also believe that McCarthy may be responsible for the murder of two other women.
McCarthy was convicted in 1998 and was sentenced to death. The conviction was overturned in 2001 because McCarthy did not have an attorney present when she was being questioned about the crime. She was retried in 2002 and was sentenced to death again.
Wayne Huff, McCarthy’s attorney, tried to get the Supreme Court to review the case before McCarthy’s execution date. The Supreme Court denied the request but Huff has filed a clemency request to Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Whitney Houston’s Brother Says He Got Her Hooked On Crack.

Whitney Houston’s brother says that it’s his fault his sister got addicted to crack.TMZ reports that though Whitney Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown is sometimes blamed for introducing the late singer to the drug she would struggle with for much of her life, Michael Houston, Whitney’s brother, said that he was the first person who did drugs with her.
Michael sits down with Oprah Winfrey alongside his mother, Cissy, for the latest episode of
Oprah’s Next Chapter during which he admits to introducing Whitney to crack in the 80s.
He says that he feels extremely guilty for Whitney’s death, but said that he didn’t realize how deadly drugs could be, or how far-reaching their consequences were, when he first brought them to her. “You gotta understand at the time … the ’80s … it was acceptable.”
Michael Houston adds, “It’s painful … I feel responsible for what I let go so far.”
Whitney Houston died suddenly in Beverly Hills in February 2011. The coroner’s report noted that Whitney died of a drug overdose after binging on cocaine, Xanax, and marijuana.
Michael Houston hasn’t spoken publicly since his sister’s death, even though Whitney was close to both him and her other brother, Gary, while they grew up together in New Jersey. Michael’s revelation that he was the one who introduced Whitney Houston to crack long before she ever met Bobby Brown is a shock to many.

Balotelli Is Gone! Man City Star Heads To AC Milan.

After much speculation surrounding 22-year-old Mario Balotelli's future with Manchester City, it has been revealed today that he is on the verge of completing a £19.5million transfer to AC Milan, back to his home country of Italy.
The two clubs are reportedly on the brink of agreeing upon the deal, which will see Balotelli put on a 4-and-a-half year contract and picking up £180,000 a week.
Balotelli's move was confirmed on Twitter by Milan director Umberto Gandini, who wrote: "Transfer agreement for Balotelli signed with Manchester City. Medicals tomorrow in Milan, then personal terms until 2017 signing."
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini had previously been keen to dismiss the supposed rumours concerning Balotelli's future with the club, with reports circulating yesterday that he had already held his leaving party in preparation for moving back to Italy.
Balotelli made a mark on Premier League football during his time at Man City, if not for his footballing prowess then for his charismatic personality. Dividing opinion with his actions, Balotelli nonetheless became one of a few footballers who was liked by supporters outside of the club he represented.

Viewers of Time Warner, Cox, partners and affiliate cable television networks will now be able to watch Nollywood movies On-Demand starting February 1st, 2013. This will be a boon to millions of cable subscribers of various cultural orientations in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

With the addition of Nollywood movies to Cable TV content, Brandcast Media, Inc. aims to generate crossover appeal through the exposure of this unique content to over 40 million North American homes. About 80% of the movies to be shown on 'Nollywood Hits' have never been seen.

Now the world will see the real life and style of Africa in the comfort of their homes". – Perry Umoh, President & CEO, Brandcast Media Inc.
As a legitimate global distribution channel, Nollywood on major cable television networks will be an emergent answer to Nollywood's rampant piracy and lack of investment and theatrical release interest.
