APC reserves right to challenge defectors in court – Lai Muhammed

The Federal Government says the All Progressives Congress (APC) reserves the right to challenge defectors in court.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said this on Saturday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise.
The Minister when asked about the party’s next step for the defected APC members to vacate their seats, said: “I still believe that the party (APC) reserves the legal right to actually challenge any of them and ask for their seats to be declared vacant.”
His comments come after the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and some lawmakers and three state governors left the ruling party for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The minister believes that the defections were planned following the emergence of the Reformed-All Progressives Congress (R-APC).
“All you have seen from the beginning – R-APC, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) were laying the foundation for the defection,” he added.
The minister also accused the leadership of the National Assembly (NASS) of frustrating efforts to ensure unity within the party.
According to him, the emergence of principal officers of NASS was against the wishes of the party as the election in 2015 happened when most APC lawmakers were having a meeting with the President.
He added, “The leadership of the National Assembly destroyed party cohesion the moment they chose to go against the wishes of the party in the election of NASS principal officers.
“It is no longer a secret that the manner at which the Senate President emerged was not to the liking of the part as a whole.
“I still remember clearly that the major leaders of the party were waiting to meet at the National Conference Center in Abuja for Mr President when we heard that the Senate President had emerged.”
Lai Mohammed, however, decried that the necessary working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government was getting affected by what he described as the “lack of discipline within the NASS leadership”.

Lauretta Onochie, President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide on social media has again reacted to the defection of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki from the All Progressive Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Onochie on her Facebook page in an article titled ‘The Many Sins of Dr Bukola Saraki Against APC and The APC Led Government’ listed the sins she perceived the Senate President must have committed.

Below are the ‘Many Sins of Dr Bukola Saraki Against APC and The APC Led Government’ by Lauretta Onochie

APC is the most tolerant political party in the world. No other party would accommodate Dr. Saraki the way APC did till we could take no more. Here are a few of his sins. Just a few obvious ones that are in the public domain:

• Non-confirmation of EFCC Chairman sent in by the President impeding and threatening to derail the fight against corruption.

• Giving preference to PDP members in committee appointments in the Senate.

• Delay in the confirmation of the boards for AMCON, CBN, NERC, NSADA, ICPC, among others.

• Giving the Deputy Senate President to the opposition party.

•Placing roadblocks to the actualization of government’s promises to Nigerians.

• Constituting a clog in the wheel of progress of the development of the country and the implementation of the policies of the administration.

• Joining forces with the opposition to ridicule President Buhari’s fight against corruption.

• Stole money from the APC Campaign during the Presidential campaign in 2015 and starved the Campaign Council of funds.

• Maintains a relationship with a gang of armed robbers who have been notorious for disturbing the peace of good people of Kwara State.

• Rallied corrupt elements to buy his Senate Presidency seat against the wishes of the Party.

• Currently inducing Senators with $100,000 each to suffocate PMB’s government in the Senate.

• Delay of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 budgets and thus impeding the economic development of the country.

• Budget padding and inserting 391 projects into budget of only two agencies.

• Shutting down the National Assembly and personalizing the National Assembly affairs especially when he is required to answer questions at law enforcement authorities, we see the entire senate following him to the CCT and shutting down the Senate.

• His refusal to entertain the virement for the funding of critical MDA’s which will ensure key agencies like INEC, NSA, NPF conduct their duties to ensure a free and fair elections.

• Frustrating key laws in the fight against corruption and promoting laws that serve personal interest like the Bill on re-ordering the sequence of elections.

• Fictitious insertions of amounts that are diverted in the name of constituency projects.

• Lack of internal democracy where he, at will, suspends senators with different opinion from him.

• Refusal to approve loans meant for infrastructural development of the country.

• Using the Senate as an institution to fight personal vendetta.

• Generally undermining the government for the past three years.

• Permitting and tacitly endorsing frivolous motions to unjustly attack the President and the Government.

Wammako declares PDP dead, says defectors will regret actions

Senator Aliyu Wammako in Sokoto today: declares PDP a dead party

Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto) who staged a grand homecoming to Sokoto today said defectors to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties from All Progressives Congress (APC) will surely regret their actions.

Wamakko stated this on Saturday at a special rally in support of President Muhammadu Buhari and APC organised by loyalists, in the wake of the defection of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to PDP from the ruling APC on Aug. 1.

He described PDP as a dead political party and categorically ruled out Tambuwal’s exit being a threat to APC hold on the state.

He said the Sokoto APC still has two Senators, seven members of the Federal House of Representatives and 12 state assembly members, beside the high percentage of political elders, youths, women and others in the state.

He conveyed President Buhari’s goodwill message to Sokoto residents.

He debunked Tambuwal’s statement that the Federal Government has not executed any project in Sokoto.

Wammako said many projects have been executed and many have been proposed across the state.

He thanked Sokoto people for the warm reception as well as huge support for President Buhari’s administration.

He urged the people to sustain the support to ensure Buhari amd APC victory in 2019 elections.

” The present political situation in Sokoto is not between mw and Governor Tambuwal but between APC as a political party and the dead PDP”, he said.

The Senator enjoined Nigerians to shun detractors and support the good leadership of President Buhari and APC at all levels.

State APC Chairman, Alhaji Sadiq Achida, said APC is still in control of the state and the control will continue.

Goodwill messages were received from former Kebbi State Governor, Nasamu Dakingari, Umaru Gwandu, representative of Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state and Muhammad Bello, who attended the rally, to show solidarity with the people of Sokoto people.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report Wamakko was received by a massive crowd that even delayed the landing of the aircraft for hours as motorcyclists and people troop onto the runway.

NAN report that the mega rally witnessed a long motorcade, a long chain of tricycles and thousands of pedestrians who trekked from the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, down to Senator Wammako’s residence in Gawan Nama in Sokoto metropolis.

Dankwambo joins PDP presidential race

Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, long speculated to be interested in Nigeria’s 2019 presidential race finally confirmed his intention on Saturday night.

“After wide consultations with party members & Nigerians of diverse backgrounds! I, Dr Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo will be running for office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the platform of our great party, the People’s Democratic Party. #GoingBeyondPromises”, he said.
He is the fifth aspirant to announce his candidacy in the PDP. Others are former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, who only two weeks went to Gombe to solicit Dankwambo’s support, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna and chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa, Attahiru Bafarawa, former governor of Sokoto and Tanimu Turaki, a former minister of the Jonathan era, who has launched a campaign via billboards.

Umahi must apologize for denying APC use of Abakaliki stadium – Oshiomhole, Don’t mind Oshiomhole; there is nothing to apologize for-Umahi

The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Governor of Ebonyi State, chief David Umahi to tender apology for denying the party the use of the Abakaliki township stadium for their rally in the state.

Oshiomhole made this call while addressing party faithful in Ebonyi during the APC rally that took place at the APC ground, beside the Offia Nwali flyover, presco junction, Abakaliki.

He said that the governor should not overuse his powers, adding that he (Adams) felt bad when he heard that the governor whom he described as his friend could deny his party the use of the township stadium.

He said: “When the people are determined, no obstacle will stop them. I hope he will apologize to his people for denying them access to the stadium.

“I was governor before, I allowed PDP access to the stadium as many times as they wanted. It is just about being civilized. And any time, the President is coming to the state, I rolled red carpet to receive him even when I will abuse the party the following day. Assuming that everybody matters is a hallmark of leadership.
“When you refuse to display power, when everybody knows you have it, you even become more powerful. When you abuse power, you simply become so small and so powerless. Let me say this, two weeks ago we were in Ekiti and that was my first question paper after my election.

“My dear friend there. He is even my aboromi (younger friend), Fayose said he is a rock. If he falls on you he will crush you and if you fall on him you get crushed. Now, within 24hours, he was on the ground crying. I said, no, why should you cry? I was to travel to Ekiti, but PDP government stopped me.

“But with my PVC, we destroyed them out of power. They should learn lessons from that. He who abuse power, abuse will await him. What I want to tell my friend is that the stadium belongs to the people, the governor is the manager of this public facility. The Manager does not drive away the shareholders.

“You are the shareholders and I don’t want to say more than that. But if I’m pushed I will ask the people question. If we were to take it in other level and the federal government decides that the Governor should not drive on the federal government roads, what happens? Somebody said he will fly. What if we stopped him from flying through federal government airport? What happens?” He stated.

The chairman, however welcomed some defectors, including senator Sunny Ogbuoji representing Ebonyi South senatorial zone, former SSG of Ebonyi State Prof Bernard Odoh, former minister of power and steal Chief Goddy Ogbaga, former speaker of Ebonyi State house of Assembly, Chief Augustine Nwankwoagu, among others.

Earlier in a remark, the minister of science and technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said that South-east must be in the mainstream of Nigerian politics.
“Let me warn that if every member of APC in Ebonyi will get their PVC, it means that APC is wining the 2019 election in Ebonyi,” he added.

Senator Ogbuoji, who responded on behalf of the defectors said APC in Ebonyi had no faction but called on some people whom he described as aggrieved members to comeback.

“I feel bad that some of our members who feel aggrieved are not here, but as far as I’m concerned, there is no faction in APC in Ebonyi,” he added.

But, in a swift reaction, the state governor, Chief David Umahi, who spoke through his Chief Press secretary, Emma Uzor said “don’t mind Oshiomhole; there is nothing to apologize for. They shifted their rally to 11th.

“Moreover what ever facilities they used in Ebonyi, the road, the place they stayed, the flyover and the street light belong to Ebonyi State government. Why are they crying? Oshiomhole is rather disappointed by the rejection of APC by the people of Ebonyi State. We have no apology,” he stated.

PDP mocks Presidency, says APC wooing its members

The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday said the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress is attempting to woo its members describing the party as discredited and famished fold.

The PDP said it has nothing, but pity for the APC, who, it alleged in its blind desperation, could not see that the train had since left the station.

National Publicity Secretary of the former ruling party, Mr. kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement in Abuja, said that nobody, no matter the lure, abandons a cruising liner, which he said the PDP now represented, to jump into “a sinking ship with a disoriented captain which the APC has become.”

He was probably referring to attempts by the ruling party to woo a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio from the PDP.

Ologbondiyan said, “Indeed, no one, no matter the enticement, runs into a collapsing building from where terrified, wounded and traumatized people are already taking flight for their dear lives.

“Nigerians can now see the shameless hypocrisy of the APC, which is now going about, cap in hand, to beg the same persons it haunted as corrupt and evil, seeing that it has been overrun by the tides.

“Having failed to cow such persons through threats, media trials, trumped-up corruption charges and raw violence, the APC is now seeking to ensnare them with promises of political opportunities it no longer has control over.

“The dilapidated APC, by now, ought to have known that no Nigerian will again fall for its gimmick of false promises and subject him or herself to the prison yard democracy, that it offers.”

Alleged supporters of politician ride motorcyles on Sokoto airport runway

A Twitter user on Saturday shared a video of the Sokoto Airport runway where alleged supporters of a politician rode motorcycles in pursuit of an aircraft supposedly carrying the politician.

The video shared on @diaryofpilot showed that the video was shot from inside a taxiing plane and shows motorcyclists right on the same runway as the plane.

The video was captioned: “Happening in Sokoto Right now… The Runway filled with supporters of some candidate… Where did we get it wrong as a country?”

Since the video was posted, other Twitter users have been reacting.

Lawmaker resigns over accusation he spends more time on boat than parliament

An Italian sailing champion turned Member of Parliament, who justified frequent parliamentary absences by saying he could do politics from his boat announced his resignation on Saturday, blaming a “media lynching”.

In a letter to the president of the lower house, Andrea Mura said he had always taken his parliamentary mandate “with the greatest seriousness” but that he had been unfairly rounded on by the media with “ignominious and groundless accusations” which his Five Star Movement had not given him the opportunity to explain.

Since his election in March, Mura had turned up for only eight of the assembly’s 220 votes, monitoring website OpenPolis revealed earlier.

The 2010 “Italian Sailor of the Year”, however, breezily rejected the criticism last week, telling Sardinia’s La Nuova Sardegna newspaper: “Political activity is not only conducted in parliament. You can also do it on a boat.”

Besides, he said, with “the overwhelming majority of the Five Star MPs (and its coalition partner, the far-right League party) in the Chamber of Deputies, it makes no difference whether I am present or not.”

The staunch environmentalist said at the time he had always told his party that he saw himself as an “advocate of saving the ocean from plastic more than as a member of parliament.”

Lawyers petition Malami over ‘unconstitutional’ NBA election

A group of lawyers has described the ongoing election of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as illegal and unconstitutional. The group, Concerned Members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has written a letter asking Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, to intervene in the matter.
The lawyers have demanded that the general council of the NBA should be convened as enshrined in the body’s constitution — in a situation where the association is unable to conduct its election at the end of July.

The electoral committee of the association had scheduled the election for July 27-28 but shifted the date to July 30-31, and most recently, to August 2-3.

“The NBA constitution clearly requires the association to conclude leadership elections before the end of July,” read the letter signed by Chidi Odinkalu, convener and Silas Onu, secretary.
“That is clearly the ‘appropriate time’ provided in section 6(2) of the constitution. If elections do not do not take place by the end of July, then by operation of section 6(2) of the NBA constitution, the tenure of the national officers of the association is terminated and the general council of the Bar shall convene to appoint a 10-man caretaker committee to run the affairs of the NBA for the unexpired duration of the tenure or such a time as new national officers are elected.

“The underlying disposition of the NBA constitution is clearly that a leadership that is unwilling or unable to organize elections within the clock envisaged by the NBA constitution loses credibility to do so. Section 6(2) operates to bring its tenure to an end.
“For the avoidance of doubt, after July 31, even the ECNBA ceases to exist and cannot organize any elections.”

The concerned lawyers also protested that the ongoing election is “afflicted with irredeemable deficits of legitimacy”.

“Quite apart from failing to meet constitutional muster, the on-going process of election is afflicted with irredeemable deficits of legitimacy. It has been configured to guarantee that an overwhelming majority of voters will be unable to accredit to vote for no fault of theirs. The outcome will lack legitimacy within and beyond the NBA,” the group said.

2019: FG is out to muzzle, stifle us out of operations – DAAR Communications

The Management of Daar Communications, a broadcast outfit, Thursday raised the alarm that ahead of 2019 general and Presidential elections, the federal government is out to muzzle and stifle them out of operations.

According to the media outfit, owners of African Independent Television, AIT and Raypower, said that to achieve this infringement on their constitutionally guaranteed freedom if expression, the government was using the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to arm twist them to support the incumbent administration.
Addressing Journalists recently in Abuja, the Group Managing Director of DAAR Communications, Mr Tony Akiotu, stressed that besides the claim by the commission that they exceeded their transmitting band of 100.5MHz, the broadcast regulatory body has unleashed a fresh onslaught against them just like it did to them shorty after 2015.
Akiotu said “they have been invited several times by the commission to either drop some presenters or decimate/tone down the vibrancy of the programme.”
It would be recalled that NBC had accused the media organization of “Exceeding the allowed band occupancy limit”, from 100.3MHz to 100.6MHz.
The commission also recently slammed the media house over over its political programme, ‘Political Platform’ for “persistent and flagrant infringement on the provision of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code on your programme”. The commission however fined them, N500,000 and N1,000,000 for the two offences, which they paid.
On the sanction slammed on them over the political programme, Akiotu said “At various times, through overtures from the commission, we have been requested to navigate the course of the discourse on progamme to desperately support the seating government at all cost irrespective of the glaring security challenges, killings and the pervading socio-political and economic dislocations that abound in the country which are daily expressed through the mails from the citizenry and the analysts.
“We use this golden opportunity to state our own side if the story considering the worrisome, arm twisting dimension that the unfolding drama by the commission is taking in a most unpredictable manner that belies the operational guidelines as enunciated in the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
“State that gradually and steadily, the commission under the present leadership as constituted is determined to intimidate, undermine and ultimately, programmed to muzzle the constitutional rights guaranteeing the freedom of speech enuciated in the human rights charter of the constitution of the Federal Republic of of Nigeria and global statues.
“Emphasised that under the guise of Nigerian Broadcasting Code, the commission has decided to interpret and enforce unambiguous provisions either through outright breaches of the wilful reinvention of the wheels.”
Akiotu explained that fines were unjust explained thus “we decided to obey and pay because we didn’t want to show that we are above the law and to make them know we are a law abiding body being the flagship private broadcast organisation in the country.”
The group Managing Director who that the accusation that they exceeded their broadcast bandwidth is strange to them, said, “We wish for state that possibly due to some ulterior motives calculated at a deterministic agenda, the commission hurriedly without recourse to its records, to verify certain facts, did not also know that video a letter reference No. NBC/11/s.26/Vol 1.259 dates February 10, 1999; signed by Mr. Bright E. Igbako, DAAR Communications Limited (as it then was) was issued a frequency assignment to Raympower FM radio Relay state in Abuja, letter for Transmission Boundary of 100.410 MHz to 100.590MHz and the operating Frequency of 100.5MHz.”

Senator Godswill Akpabio set to move to APC

The romance between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator Godswill Akpabio, the PDP Minority Leader in the Senate, has unsettled the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpabio might defect to the APC any moment from now once the “terms” are wrapped up, The Nation has reported.
The APC is upbeat about the prospect, which analysts believe will be a major political mileage for President Muhammadu Buhari in the South-South.
A PDP top notch said last night that the party has been appealing to the ex-governor not to defect “but we cannot please him and then displease the governor of the state, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, who is the PDP leader in the state.”
There is no love lost between Akpabio and Emmanuel. Emmanuel was practically made governor by Akpabio in 2015.
It was learnt that Akpabio had made up his mind to defect on July 24 but was not recognised by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who got wind of his move, to make his intention public.
Notwithstanding, Akpabio showed signs of his departure from the PDP on Thursday when he boycotted the special meeting of the National Executive Committee of the PDP held to welcome defectors including Saraki and governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Samuel Ortom of Benue state, among others.
A top APC source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “The APC and some of our leaders are in serious talks with Akpabio, who is rated as a matchmaker in the South-South.
“The talks border on more deals for the South-South, especially increase in derivation formula; enhanced infrastructure for oil producing areas; how to sustain the ongoing reforms by President Muhammadu Buhari; and arresting the developmental slide in Akwa Ibom State.
“The former governor said his likely defection to APC is informed more by patriotism than selfish interest.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The terms are still being worked out, but APC is favourably disposed to Akpabio’s defection.
“The ex-governor has an open mind, he has no airs and he does not pretend in asking for a better nation which he thinks Buhari can offer.
“In fact, it was part of the talks that made him visit Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday when the PDP national EXCO was meeting in Abuja.

“We will no doubt accept him into APC. This is a major development from the South-South.”
