Shea butter, also known as karite butter, is a cream-colored fatty substance made from the nuts of karite nut trees (also called Mangifolia trees) that grow in the savannah regions of West and Central Africa. Karite trees, or shea trees, are not cultivated. They grow only in the wild, and can take up to 50 years to mature (they live up to 300 years!). In most parts of West Africa, destruction of the shea tree is prohibited because this little nut provides a valuable source of food, medicine, and income for the population. In fact, shea butter is sometimes referred to as “women’s gold” in Africa, because so many women are employed in the production of shea butter.

Benue State commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Eugene Aliegba, today led a delegation that brought 80 imported exotic pigs to the Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Yandev.
The swine comprising 60 females and 20 males arrived Nigeria last night through Abuja airport and reached their destination at about 10am accompanied by two expatriates from the University of Iowa in the United States of America, the Consultant on the Benue State Swine Integrated Farm, Dr. Timothy Ijir, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Security, Mr.Emmanuel Atser.
State Information and Orientation Commissioner, Mr. Conrad Wergba, his Sports and Youths counterpart, Mr. Aondowase Chia, Gboko caretaker chairman, Mr. Ioryue Yajir, as well as journalists, other dignitaries, the rector and staff of the college as well as other members of the public turned out to witness the arrival.
While Dr. Aliegba pledged to give journalists details on the animals later, they were carefully offloaded into a building already constructed for them.
The Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Atser stated that the specie which he described as the best in the world was procured from Ireland.
Dr. Ijir disclosed that the animals were aged between two to four months and were expected to start breeding within the next six months.
Speaking at the ministerial press briefing to mark the 2012 Democracy Day in Makurdi yesterday, Dr. Aliegba, represented by the permanent secretary in the Ministry, Prince Andy Uwouku, disclosed that the farm centre was established in conjunction with Iowa State University from the USA.
He said the centre comprises two farms which were located in Yandev and Katsina-Ala and would undertake pig production, processing and marketing as well as crop production.
According to Dr. Aliegba staff have already been trained to manage the farms while the buildings to house the animals and the administrative block have already been constructed. This puts to rest speculations that the Swine Project is a hoax.

Breaking News.Security beefed up in Benue as Boko Haram gives notice to strike.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau says his group will not be defeated

There was fear in Otukpo, headquarters of Idomaland in Benue State, on Saturday, following a threat by the dreaded the Boko Haram sect to launch attack in the ancient town.
Consequently, security operatives went round the town to demonstrate their might and as well scare off members of the sect who had threatened to bomb the town.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that members of the notorious Islamic sect, last week, sent text messages to security agents alerting them to plans to bomb the police station in the town, the Otukpo Main Market, St Mary’s Church, among others.
The alert, according to a source, informed the moving around the town of the security operatives with security vehicles, including an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) in company of vigilance members, commercial motor cycle riders and other well-meaning members of the town to denounce the threat.
The development has thrown the town and its surroundings into a state of uncertainty, as residents were said to have kept away from public gatherings, including church services on Saturday.
Sometime in January, the area was also thrown into similar security threat, when members of the sect were alleged to have visited the town and had gone round with the aid of commercial motor cyclists to locate their probable sites of bombing.
The police, using their plain-clothes detectives, were said to have gone into surveillance in order to identify members of this notorious sect or those that might have link with them.
To prevent entry into their premises, the police had placed a heavy iron at the gate, which made it difficult for anybody to gain entry.
The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Alaribe Ejike, when contacted, said he was yet to be informed about the development.

Man With Ammunitions Arrested at Radio House Abuja.

A man tried to smuggle grenades and rifle ammunition into Nigeria's Information Ministry where ministers were attending a news conference Monday, witnesses and authorities said.
The man apparently made it past the gate of the Radio House compound in Nigeria's capital Abuja, heading toward where the ministers were meeting before being stopped. Footage aired on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority showed the man sitting on the ground next to a woman's handbag that contained the rifle rounds and the grenades.
While police identifed the cannisters as hand grenades, at least one had the acronym "CS" and the word "riot" written on its side, likely making it a cannister of tear gas instead of a bomb. Another cannister bore similar markings to it, and the other appeared to a stun grenade.
As journalists shouted questions at the man after his arrest, he said that he had come from a neighboring state and was trying to give the bag to someone else inside the ongoing ministerial conference. The conference, aired live on state television Monday, continued uninterrupted.
Police later identified the man arrested as John Akapapu and said they had taken him into custody as they continued an investigation into the incident. A statement from federal police command said officers recovered 37 rifle rounds and three grenades after Akapapu's arrest, but did not offer any details about why the man carried the weapons onto the ministry's grounds.
Nigeria has been under increasing attack by a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which has been blamed for more than 520 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. Nigeria's capital also has been targeted in bombings carried out by militants from the country's oil-rich southern delta.
However, those attacks have been carried out largely by car bomb, not by attackers using military-style hand grenades.

Pressure Grows On US To Lists Nigerian Militants As Terrorists.

United States House of Representatives Seal

Congress is stepping up pressure on the Obama administration to formally designate the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram, which has alleged al Qaeda links, as a "foreign terrorist organization."
Scott Brown, a Republican senator from Massachusetts, wrote Secretary of State Hillary Clinton late last week urging her to designate the group, an Islamist sect that has been linked to 700 killings in Nigeria over the last 18 months, as a terrorist organization under U.S. law.
Then, on Sunday, U.S. Representatives Peter King and Patrick Meehan, chairmen of the House Homeland Security Committee and its counterterrorism subcommittee, respectively, released a letter they sent to Clinton on Friday suggesting that the administration was moving too slowly on the issue.
King and Meehan cited a Reuters' report last week about how the Justice Department earlier this year had urged the State Department to apply the "foreign terrorist" designation to Boko Haram. The congressmen suggested that by not doing so, the department was "denying the United States intelligence and law enforcement communities the tools they need to combat an al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization.
"Ten years after 9/11, we cannot allow bureaucratic stovepipes and interagency turf battles to prevent us from protecting the U.S. homeland and U.S. global interests," the congressmen complained.
The letters detail a litany of violence Boko Haram, which means "western education is sinful," has allegedly perpetrated in recent years, including a December 2010 bombing that killed 80 and an August 2011 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, in which 23 people died.
The Justice Department's letter to Clinton warned that the United States should not "underestimate the potential threat Boko Haram poses to U.S. interests abroad and the homeland," noting that it has "forged links" with other militant groups which have threatened Western interests.
A senior State Department official told Reuters last week the department was obliged to undertake extensive analysis before adding organizations to the list and said the department was "not stalling or dragging our feet" on Boko Haram.
A U.S. national security official said on Monday that although most official reporting indicated that Boko Haram was "focused inwardly" in terms of their current attack targets, there was growing evidence that "they don't like Kenya" and that their violent activities were growing.
A congressional source said that as of last week, State Department representatives had lobbied Congress to try to stop legislation that would force the administration to act against the group or explain why it had not done so.
Further legislative moves may occur later this week, another congressional source said.

Drogba And Torres To Leave Chelsea.

Didier Drogba cropped

Europeans Champions Chelsea face an unexpected exodus of strickers as Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres potentially playing else where next season.Drogba’s decisive penalty Saturday looks almost certain to have been his last contribution in a Chelsea shirt, with widespread reports indicating that he will sign a 250,000 pound ($395,000) a week contract with Shanghai Shenhua to link up with former strike partner Nicholas Anelka.

Signed in 2004 for a then club record fee of 24 million pounds, Drogba has been a consistent source of goals for Chelsea, scoring numerous crucial goals as Chelsea have won 10 major trophies during his tenure at the club.
Drogba is keen to sign a two-year extension of his current deal but Chelsea are reluctant to commit to more than a single year.

Despite reveling in his club’s incredible achievements this season, Torres revealed in an interview with Guillaume Ballegue that he intends to discuss his future with Chelsea this summer.
Signed for a British record 50 million pounds in 2011, Torres has endured much frustration during his short time at the club. He has struggled to repeat his prolific form for Liverpool since arriving in West London, scoring only six league goals this season and suffering a 25-hour period in which he failed to score.
"I have been through the worst moments of my career during the season” Torres said, adding: "I felt they have treated me in a way I was not expecting."
It is understood that Torres will not be satisfied in only playing a bit part for the club, stressing his disappointment at not starting either of the FA Cup or Champions League finals.
Chelsea are likely to add to their attack this summer, with Radamel Falcao of Atlético Madrid, Hulk of Porto and Napoli's Edinson Cavani believed targets, meaning Torres’ future looking set to remain uncertain.

Activities Of Boko Haram Sect Are Frustrating Economic Activities In The North.-Gov. Suswam

Benue State governor Gabriel Suswam has said that the activities of the Boko Haram sect are frustrating economic activities in the north. The region, he noted, needs help to overcome the challenges arising from the activities of the sect.
The governor, who spoke in Kaduna during an interview with select journalists, also said that operators of small and medium-scale industries and investors were deserting the region for fear of insecurity.
According to Suswam, it would be difficult to hold any talks with the sect since they have continued to remain faceless without any defined leadership and demands, adding that the government cannot tackle the security challenges without the collaborative support of the people of the north.

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wedded longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan on Saturday, announcing the nuptials through a status update on the social networking site.
The 28-year-old billionaire's wedding took place a day after Facebook's initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange on Friday. More than 280 000 people "liked" Zuckerberg's status change, which was accompanied by a photo of the smiling couple in wedding attire in a small, verdant outdoor setting with a string of lights behind them.
In the photo, the famously casual Zuckerberg is wearing a dark blue suit and tie, a departure from his trademark "hoodie," while Chan has on a sleeveless white dress with lace overlay.
The pair wed in an intimate backyard ceremony in Palo Alto, California, according to People magazine. The couple had planned the exchange of vows for four months, but surprised their guests, who thought they were to celebrate Chan's recent graduation from medical school, the magazine reported.
Zuckerberg's sister, Arielle Zuckerberg, posted, "Balls. Now I'm the only unmarried Zuckerberg..." on her Facebook page. She is listed by Chan as a family member on the site.
Zuckerberg designed a simple ruby wedding ring for Chan himself, People reported. Guests dined on food from the couple's favourite restaurants, and nibbled on mouse-shaped chocolates that the pair ate on their first date nine years ago.
