Benue Hits N500 Million IGR Target-----Ayabam.

Posted by Picasa

Benue State Government has achieved its N500 million internally generated revenue monthly set target, while it has also set a billion naira revenue target monthly as from January 2011.

The Chairman, Benue State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. Andrew Ayabam, who said this, added that since assumption of office some months ago, he had raised the revenue profile of the state from N120 million monthly to N500 million.

He expects that by January next year, we would have achieved a target of N1 billion monthly," he said.

Ayabam explained that the board had embarked on tax payers' education as well as coordination collection process as strategy towards realizing this goal.

He regretted that situationwhereby ministries, departments and agencies (MDGs) were collecting revenues indiscriminately and not remitting same into the state coffers, saying the money were misappropriated.

The chairman further said the board had plugged all loopholes of siphoning taxes by government officials by insisting that all revenue due to the state government be paid into bank accounts, adding that they had employed the services of all banks resident in the state as collecting agents for the board.

"We have a situation now where ministries, departments and agencies must remit taxes collected, must be deposited into government approved banks. We are building up a database that will aid us for continuity and sustainability of the entire process," Ayabam said.

He expressed delight that these measures had worked out effectively as tax payers no longer have difficulties in paying their taxes.

"As you go to the bank to transact other businesses, you could also make your tax payment or issue your instruction for deductions by the bank," Ayabam stressed

A representative sample of phone owning Nigerians were polled on their opinions and preferences of several high profile aspirants who have declared their intention to seek the nation's highest office in next year's elections.

This poll is part of the ongoing snap poll exercise conducted by NOI Polls to rapidly assess public sentiments following various electoral events. NOI Polls is a Nigerian based opinion research organization which Works in technical partnership with Gallup Polls (USA), to conduct periodic opinion polls on various socioeconomic issues in Nigeria.

The results revealed wide disparities in the level of knowledge, opinions and preferences of the respondents about these aspirants.

But the company says  these results could change as other factors such as the choice of Vice Presidential Candidates and the current efforts of some Northern politicians to choose a consensus candidate from the region are factored in.

The results:
General Buhari (Retired)
Participants in the survey were asked if they were aware of retired General Buhari's intention to run for office in the forthcoming elections.  Well over 9 in 10 people (97%) surveyed were aware of this fact. When asked if they felt he should run for office, 41% said he should, while nearly 6 in 10 people (58%) said he should not run.

The Majority of the people (70%) who said he should run, cited  "his right" as a Nigerian as the reason he should run.  8% said he had the "experience" needed, 5% said "he is a man of integrity", while the reason given by another 8% was "he is a good man".

The highest proportion (34%) of respondents who said he should not run, mentioned a "preference for other candidates" as the reason why he should not run for office. 22% said they wanted a "new generation of leaders", while 14% each cited a "general dislike" for the candidate and an inability to "provide the positive change need in Nigeria".

Governor Bukola Saraki
While 88% of the people polled were aware of Governor Saraki's intention to run for office, only slightly over one-third (35%) of respondents felt he should run. 62% said he should not run while 3% did not have anything to say on the issue.

The vast majority (84%) of those who said he should run for office, mentioned "his right" as a nigerian as the reason he should run. 6% said he is a "good man", while 35% each said he is "experienced/ competent" and he is a "man of integrity".

29% of those who said Governor Saraki should not run, cited a "preference for other candidates" as their major reason. 16% cited a "general dislike" for the candidate,14% said he is "inexperienced/incompetent"; while 11% each mentioned a "bad reputation" and an inability to "provide the positive change needed in Nigeria", as their reasons.

President Goodluck Jonathan
Almost all (99%) the people polled said they were aware of President Jonathan's intention to contest in the upcoming presidential elections. 87% of respondents said they feel he should run for office. This figure is slightly higher than a similar poll conducted in August 2010, before  the president declared his intentions to contest, where 81% felt he should run.

Again, majority of respondents ( 23%) who said he should run, mentioned "his right" as a Nigerian as their reason. 18% cited "experience/competence", 16% each said he is "innovative/progressive" and he is a "man of integrity"; while 10% and 12% said he is a "good man" and he "represents a new generation of leaders" respectively.

Ibrahim Babangida (IBB)
While nearly all of those quizzed (97%) are aware that Ibrahim Babangida has declared his intention to run for the 2011 presidential elections, only 27% think he should run for office.

When asked why they think he should run for office, 76% of those who think he should run said that it is within his rights as a Nigerian, 9% said that he is a good man and 8% said that they believe he is  competent enough to be president.

Of the 69% who think he should not run, 19% cited his reputation as being poor, 19% said that they dislike him, 17% said that they want a new generation of leaders.

Atiku Abubakar
Awareness of Atiku Abubakar's presidential aspirations is also high at 90%, however only 27% of respondents think that he should run while 70% believe he shouldn't run for president.

The highest proportion of those who believe that he should run (87%) say that it his right to do so.

Nuhu Ribadu
86% of respondents are aware of Ribadu's intention to run for the 2011 presidential elections. Just over half of Nigerians (55%) think that he should run.

Benue Governor receives IBB in Makurdi.

BENUE State Governor Gabriel Suswam has described former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, as a man with presidential qualities to lead the nation.

Speaking at a meeting with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates in Benue State, Suswam described Babangida as a statesman who has presidential qualities required to lead the nation.
A crowd of top politicians, women groups and students from the 23 local councils of Benue State thronged the Makurdi airport to receive Babangida.

Benue political leaders led by Senator George Akume, besieged the airport for several hours before the arrival of Babangida by 12 noon.

Suswam advised General Babangida to de-emphasise zoning and focus his campaign on his laudable qualities. He said that in his eight years as military president, he left lasting legacies that helped to develop the nation.

According to Suswam, the PDP as a party believes in internal democracy, noting that the nation deserves quality leaders to transform the country.

In his address, Babangida solicited the support of Benue people. He said he cultivated the friendship of Benue people when he started his military career in 1964.He called on Governor Suswam to support his bid to lead the nation again.

Amazing World of Ali Nuhu.Kannywood Super Star.

This is the amazing world of Ali Nuhu, whose foray into Nollywood started from the Hausa films genre. His first film Abin'sirrine (It's a secret) was in 1999 after he graduated from the University of Jos, with a degree in Geography. "I have always wanted to act, even when I was a small boy. I knew I would act someday but how it would start was unknown to me," he offers.

Luck smiled on him when he read an advertisement. "It was about an audition and they needed cast for a film. That was after my graduation but the film that shot me to limelight was Dijangala, which bagged an award of the Best Hausa Film at the Zuma Films Festival in Abuja. Though a re-make of the old Dijangala, it was what I needed to be hot in the Hausa film market. Since then, I have been in the Hausa genre of Nollywood before Wetin Dey?"

Getting the role of Ibrahim on the Wetin Dey? set was by a stroke of luck. "I came in late," he revealed. Late? Didn't he want the role from the outset? "Already, they had taken the pilot copy to London for selection but they needed to make changes. I was invited for an audition in Kano and was told that it was a BBC-sponsored stuff. There were four directors on set and, after my audition, I was chosen to play the role of Ibrahim and we were on set for a year and three months." He played the role so well that you would think he suffered from the deadly virus. Ironically, he confessed that: "I didn't know about HIV/AIDS or even stigmatisation of victims until I got to the set. I got to meet people infected and we learnt from them in interpreting our roles. The role of Ibrahim was a true life story of a victim who knew he had AIDS and, to cover up, he quickly married his cousin. He was afraid of stigmatisation and discrimination. So he continued covering up his tracks until he met his waterloo. I believe the society made Ibrahim who he was and not because he was callous or wicked."

Based in Kano, his handsome face has featured in many Hausa films and he is one of the celebrated stars of the Hausa movie world. Attesting to the fact that the Kano movie industry is getting more vibrant daily, Nuhu says their audience is not only northern based. 'From Abuja to the East and neighbouring African countries, we are watched and our stars celebrated. In a year, we have produced over 200 films. We are doing well in the market and we are set to do more."

Back to Wetin Dey?, he agreed that the soap had influenced his life. "We are fighting a cause but I was told that people could mistake me for HIV positive person but I didn't mind because we wanted to make viewers know that HIV/AIDS victims are people like us and should not be discriminated against. That was why I put in every skill I have but viewers believe I am HIV positive in real life. I am not. I have gone for test and I am negative. That I play a role on television does not mean that I am that person."

So, who is he? To his numerous female fans, who think Ali Nuhu is not married, this is indeed sad news. "I am happily married and I have two kids. My wife is quite beautiful and I would do anything to please her. I even give my scripts to her and anything she would not like, I would not do on set," he said. Is he saying he would not kiss or touch a woman on set just because his wife would not approve? "Though she is Hausa and a devout Moslem, she is liberal and believes my profession is important. Oftentimes, my roles on set could have to do with women and she would not object to kisses or hugs. Romantic scenes are allowed but there is a limit."

But his religion, Islam, forbids it. "I am a professional actor and as long as what I am doing on set is not sinful, my religion would not frown on it. A lot of Nigerians mistake your roles on television or films for the real you. They have forgotten that your real you is different from the actor in you. I could dress scantily on set but would not do that in real life."

Asked Ali Nuhu if his wife gets jealous over his female fans and he replies, "Naturally, women are jealous and could get possessive over their husbands. I feel for wives of actors when female fans flock around them for photographs, autographs or make calls even late in the night. Naturally, my wife is not a jealous person but there was a time some rumour-mongers were all over town saying I was dating an Hausa actress. After an event, I gave the lady a lift and my wife saw us together. She was not angry but she cautioned me to stop being seen with that girl because people could mistake our intentions."

With a successful fragrance franchise under her belt and her first baby on the way, Mariah Carey already has plenty on her plate, but that's not stopping the multi-platinum star from gearing up to launch her first lifestyle line of sparkly baubles, shoes and limited-edition fragrance for HSN on Nov. 29. And Mariah fans will not be disappointed. From the pave-set "initial" pendants to the crystal-encrusted butterfly earrings, the collection is signature Mariah. "From the inception of working with Elizabeth Arden, I wanted the fragrances to represent what I really like," Mariah tells WWD. "It really opened my eyes and opened the doors for me in terms of starting to think about going into other creative ventures." And although it comes as no shock that the high-heel queen would extend her creativity to shoes--her line includes fur-trimmed suede boots and quilted nylon boots--she admits that jewelry wasn't always on her radar. "I never even used to wear jewelry. I used to wear baby earrings, tiny things," she said, but once she was influenced by HSN's resident fashionistas, she was sold. And with 20 years of performing in the bag, Mariah's Nov. 29 TV time isn't striking any nerves, telling WWD, "I think it's just about being yourself, explaining the different products and enjoying yourself." Miss Wheelchair pageant.

The event, which originated in the United States of America in 1972, will debut for the first time in Africa with the aim of selecting an intelligent and worthy advocate for people living with disabilities in Nigeria. According to Cosmas Okoli, the President of Mobility Aid and Appliances Research and Development Centre (MAARDEC), organisers of the pageant, the criteria for selecting the winner would not be focused on beauty like most other pageants but would seek for a woman with good communication skills who can serve as a brand for people with disabilities.

'No bikini contests'

"Miss Wheelchair Nigeria Pageant is not a beauty pageant in the sense that there is no emphasis on the physical appearance of the contestants," he said. "There are no bikini contests and the contestants will be judged on their achievements since the onset of their disabilities, their projection and communication skills, and their abilities to successfully advocate for over 20 million Nigerians with disabilities. It is likely that the winner would be very beautiful but that is not one of our criteria."

According to him, while the actual worth of prizes to be given to the winner is not yet known due to insufficient financial sponsors, the winner of the pageant would go home with a brand new car and other attractive prizes. "The Miss Wheelchair Nigeria Pageant 2010 title holder will receive a handsome prize and will be branded and equipped to carry out some specific assignments including to ensure at least 500 persons with disabilities are gainfully employed," he said.

The criteria

The choice of using a physically challenged person for their advocacy, he added, was necessary to adequately project their cause. "In any advocacy it is best to use those that are mostly affected," he said. "Who is best to talk about marginalisation other than those who are marginalised? Women on wheelchair suffer the most and so we decided it was best to start with Miss Wheelchair. As women with disabilities, they also suffer the stereotype associated with disabilities."

According to the organisers, the contestants must be women aged between 18 and 50 by May 2010. They may also be married, single, divorced or separated. They may have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren or no children at all. There will be zonal competitions to select state representatives at the grand finale to be held on December 4 in Lagos.

The supporters

Azeez Olanrewaju, the Senior Special Assistant to chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, while speaking at the press conference yesterday, said the council was committed to the pageant and the disability centre. "Our local government is very proud and honoured to partner with the president of MAARDEC and to associate ourselves with this model event," he said. "Pageantry is a medium to market and market is the window of brands. By this novel initiative, I must say that yMAARDEC is on a course to history. We shall portray this event in the glory it requires. All necessary support shall be given to this event."

Mr Okoli, who also announced his intentions to run for a senatorial position in the coming elections, said that it was unfair that there are no people with disabilities in political positions in the country. This he said has contributed to the marginalisation against members of the disability community and building of public facilities such as roads and banks in such a way that is inaccessible to people with disabilities. "If a non-profit organisation can make its structure accessible, why can't the government? It is very painful that we are pursuing the Millennium Development Goals without people with disabilities," he said. "A society is judged by its ability to take care of the weakest members of the society. If you build a society for the rich and powerful, you have not built a society because everybody would not be rich and powerful.

Tenagger dies after abortion. . . .

Homicide detectives at Panti, Yaba, have began investigation into the death of a teenager, Uju Onwuzuruigbe, who allegedly died from complications arising from an unsafe abortion.

Miss Onwuzuruigbe, 18, bled to death on October 22 at her parents' house at Shuribu, in Ajangbadi, few days after an auxiliary nurse, identified as Joy Temi, performed an abortion for her. Her parents reported the matter to the police; and subsequently her lover, Peter Chukwunakwe, and the nurse were arrested.

The victim's mother told her story. "Uju be my daughter and she is the fifth child wen I born, dem plenty wen I get," she said. "But on the 22nd, she come home tell me her mama say her belly dey pain her. She come say make her I give her hot water to drink. As she drink and she still dey cry, dey roll for bed say her belly still dey pain her. I come ask her say wetin happen she say na stomach, but around 5.30 am she come dey shake say she wan die. I tell her say she no go die make she tell me wetin happen. Na so she come confess say, 'mama, I don do you bad, na belly I remove.' She tell me about the nurse, na so I come hear about wetin happen to my daughter. As she tell me these thing, na so she come die. We come go report the case to police."

Not guilty

Both the nurse, Ms Temi, and the alleged lover, Mr Chukwunakwe, denied procuring abortion for the deceased. "She came to me on October 7th that she has a venereal disease, that she was having discharges," said Ms Temi. "I gave her Gentamicin Tablet and she went home. It was after some days that the police came and arrest me that I did abortion for Uju. I am a trained nurse and I got my certificate at the Falati Hospital. I did not do any abortion for her, I only treated her for a virginal infection and it is not an STD she had."

Mr Chukwunakwe agreed that he dated the deceased, but denied knowledge of the pregnancy. "Uju is my girl friend and I have known her for more than one year," he said. "She did not tell me that she was pregnant and I did not take her for any abortion, so I do not know anything about her death."

Not interested in justice

Ambrose Onwozurigbe, the father of the victim, said he is not interested in prosecuting the case. "I want make police release my daughter dead body make I go bury her," he said. "Her body dey for mortuary and doctors no dey to do autopsy for her. Wetin don happen don happen. E no good make she dey there dey smell, her spirit no agree rest and we want carry her go burry her make her spirit rest, so we want make police release her body to us."

Investigations into homicide cases in the state are being stalled following the strike by Lagos doctors. A morgue attendant at the Isolo General Hospital, who did not wish to be named, confirmed that cases of corpses without autopsy reports have increased in the last two months as a result of the doctors' strike. "One thing you should know is that detectives cannot do their work especially in homicide cases when there is no autopsy report to prove the causes of death," he said. "Many people are just coming here to claim their corpses without due autopsy report because the doctors that will carry it out are on strike. So people must bury their dead, and I can tell you that because of this strike, the corpses at this general hospital have increased

It's a remix to the nationwide smash hit single 'Kondo' which was released in 2009, but didn't dominate the charts till early 2010. A posthumous album reportedly titled 'Bullet Proof' is expected to drop sometime in 2011.
