Jeta Amata One Of Nigeria's Most Prominent Film Directors On CNN's African Voices,Talks About His Family ,Career And His Movie '' Black November''.

Jeta Amata

Angelle Kwemo, Vivica Fox, Jeta Amata, Jeta's wife Mbong Amata and Enyinna Nwigwe (l-r) pose for a photo at the "Black November "screening in Washington, on May 8, 2012

Jeta & Mbong Amata

African Voices is a weekly show that highlights Africa's most engaging personalities, exploring the lives and passions of people who rarely open themselves up to the camera. Follow the team onTwitter.

He is one of Nollywood's most popular film directors, hailing from a famous family of movie stars that have shaped Nigeria's entertainment industry for decades.

Yet Jeta Amata had other career plans while growing up.

"I wanted to be a pilot," says the award-winning filmmaker. "I was about six and I was intrigued with the fact that something could fly up there and that some man could control it; I wanted to control the plane."

But Amata's dreams to conquer the skies were put aside as his family genes kicked in. Instead, Amata went on to reach great heights with his feature films, winning international acclaim and carving out a career as one of Nigeria's most prominent directors.
Nigerian filmmaker blurs borders
Jeta Amata: My Hollywood crossover
Amata: I rebelled against family

For his latest film, "Black November," Amata broke new ground working with both Hollywood and Nollywood talent.

An impressive roster of American film stars, including Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger, Vivica Foxx, Michael Madsen and Tom Sizemore, as well as musicians Akonand Wyclef Jean, is joined by famous Nigerian actors Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Enyinna Nwigwe.

Amata's family is also part of the star-studded cast. Along with Amata's father, Fred, the film stars his wife, Mbong Amata, as the female lead.

Spotlight on Niger Delta

"Black November" is a drama about Nigeria's Niger Delta region -- a part of Nigeria still struggling to overcome a past history of rebel violence. The area is the world's third-largest wetland but decades of oil drilling had turned it into one of the most oil-polluted places on Earth.

"For years now I've been wanting to make something on Niger Delta," says Amata. "I wrote three scripts over the past maybe eight years about the Niger Delta and as things kept escalating it became almost more difficult to make but I got to the point where I knew it just has to be now."

Amata, who grew up in the Niger Delta, titled his film "Black November" after the month when local environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa was killed.

Read this: Veteran director reveals secrets of Nollywood's successIn 1995, Nigerian writer and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Saro-Wiwa was one of nine environmentalists arrested and executed by the then military regime. The news provoked international outrage and Nigeria was suspended from the British Commonwealth until 1999.

Many of the Delta protests led by Saro-Wiwa targeted oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, which was sued by families of the activists, who accused the company of complicity in the deaths. The company said it never advocated any act of violence against the activists and tried to persuade the government to grant clemency. In 2009, the company agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the families, paying them $15.5 million.

Amata, who had once met Saro-Wiwa through his father, says he was affected by the activist's death.

"I have always wanted to tell a part of his story," he says. "Most of the politics in his story I didn't want to get into. I wanted to get to the human part of his story. What excites me about people's stories are the human parts of them, not necessarily the politics. Even in 'Black November' I know I touch on politics a bit but I'm more concerned about the feelings of the people, about what they've been through and where they are going through."

Amata says his goal is for viewers to realize what people in the region have been through over the past few decades.

"We want the world to stand with us," he says. "We are not trying to fight the government, trying to fight the oil companies, no -- we are trying to repair what has been damaged," adds Amata. "We can change the Niger Delta of Nigeria."

The booming industry has been notorious for churning out over 1,000 films a year which often struggle with shoe-string budgets and low production values.Nollywood, the term coined for Nigeria's mega film industry, has grown in recent years into a mighty movie-making machine, capturing audiences with its universal themes and arresting stories of urban culture.

Amata, who is often praised for the high production values and strong narratives of his movies, says he initially disliked the Nollywood name, which sounded like "not-Hollywood."

Yet, today he passionately defends the industry, rejecting claims that his movies are not part of Nigeria's movie-making movement.

"If I make a couple of Hollywood films its not going to change who I am and where I come from," he says. "I built Nollywood with people out there," he adds. "I was one of the first few people to make films. I worked hard for the market. I learned like all the Nollywood directors how to pull a camera apart and how to put it together. I am not going to lose that title, never.

"I don't care what people say, or what they think, or how they say it is really not Nollywood, I am Nollywood."

Senegalese Woman Arrested With Drugs Hidden In Her Private Part At Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos.

A 33-year-old Senegalese woman, Miss Kamara Oumou was on Wednesday apprehended with 680 grammes of heroin and cocaine carefully hidden in her private parts at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, while attempting to board an Arik Air flight to Dakar.
She was nabbed by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The suspect with Senegal international passport number 400680371 claimed she had to smuggle the drugs due to the love she had for her Nigerian boyfriend.
She was arrested during the screening of passengers at the airport.
Commenting on Miss Oumou’s arrest, NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the suspect used industrial tape to stick three parcels of cocaine, weighing 515 grammes on her waist while 6 wraps of heroin weighing 165 grammes were inserted in her private parts.
He said, “it was a carefully concealed method but not intelligent enough to escape our detection.”
Mr Umar said they were shocked beyond imagination over Miss Oumou’s revelation of smuggling the drugs for love she had for her Nigerian
boyfriend whom she identified as Hakeem.
According to him, “preliminary investigation revealed that they both met in Dakar where Hakeem is believed to have lived for 11 years. Their
relationship lasted only six months before Hakeem left Dakar in December 2012. Hakeem invited Kamara to Lagos from Dakar and lodged her in a hotel where they both spent a week together.
“Within this period, he made necessary arrangement for Kamara to go back with the drugs.”
Narrating her ordeals, Kamara said that it was her first time of seeing drugs.
“I have had a good relationship with Hakeem until my arrest. The day he brought the drugs to the hotel room was my first time ever of seeing drugs.
“He called the drugs ‘products’ and that his business partners are unfaithful and he wants me to take the products to Dakar because he had trust in me.
“Hakeem taught me how to pack the drugs and also took care of my travel arrangements. He said that he lives in the East, but he took good care of me in a hotel in Lagos. We were to travel together to Dakar but he suddenly changed the arrangement. Hakeem travelled to Dakar a day before my trip” Kamara stated.
“How can I ask my boyfriend to pay me? I smuggled the drugs for the love I have for my Nigerian boyfriend” Kamara affirmed.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade has urged members of the public to to be weary of the tricks employed by drug traffickers.
“It is wrong to commit crimes. No reason is strong enough to get engaged in drug trafficking. Drug barons may claim to be in love with unsuspecting couriers. They may even present themselves as philanthropists, members of the public are advised to shun drug trafficking” Giade said.

Pope Francis Washed And Kissed The Feet Of Inmates At A Young Offenders Prison In Rome.

Ritual: The Pope kisses the feet of one of twelve prisoners during the Holy Thursday ritual
Tradition: Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of inmates at a young offenders prison in Rome

The foot washing on Maundy Thursday echoes a New Testament passage in which Jesus honours his 12 disciples before his Crucifixion.
Francis has carried out similar ceremonies in Argentinian jails.
In a first for a Pope, he also attended to the feet of two woman prisoners. Several of the 12 were also Muslim.
Pope Francis already has officials on the back foot with his lack of regard for protocol.
He has insisted he will not live in the lavish Papal apartment, a 12-room property on the top floor of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace.
On seeing the apartment, he said: ‘But there is room for 300 people in here.’
Instead, Pope Francis has chosen a modest two-bedroom hotel-style residence at the Domus Santa Marta building.

GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER
O Jesus, Who by reason of Thy burning love for us
hast willed to be crucified
and to shed Thy Most Precious Blood
for the redemption and salvation of our souls,
look down upon us here gathered together
in remembrance of Thy most sorrowful Passion and Death,
fully trusting in Thy mercy;
cleanse us from sin by Thy grace,
sanctify our toil,
give unto us and unto all those who are dear to us our daily bread,
sweeten our sufferings,
bless our families,
and to the nations so sorely afflicted,
grant Thy peace,
which is the only true peace,
so that by obeying Thy commandments
we may come at last to the glory of heaven.
Amen.

Kim Kardashian To Feature In Tyler Perry's Movie ''Temptation''.

She's kind of excited to be in Tyler Perry’s movie Temptation, which stars Jurnee Smollet-Bell andVanessa Williams. Of course  Kim Kardashian who has a small role in the film! Kim recently sat down with BET to talk about how her life on reality TV prepared her to be comfortable in front of the camera for the movie. Kim also talks about the challenges she will have raising a biracial child and the advice that she has been given from friends who have biraciali t seems that Kim is a little uncomfortable talking about race in front of the camera . People pick apart everything she says and does and she doesn’t want to give people more of a reason to hate her. I would have liked to address the fact that her child isn’t only BIRACIAL, butTRIracial. Kim herself is a product of a biracial marriage. I’m sure that her Armenian father and white mother had some obstacles that they had to face as well when started their family.
Either way, we are counting down the months until Baby Kimye gets here. We know he/she will be FABulous.

My Oga At The Top: "Stop The Rubbish" - Charlyboy

Even though, my ways may be very different from yours, I still believe we must be objective in our analysis, judgment, and conclusion about others. The NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Shem’s experience in the hands of Nigerians and the Channel TV personalities cannot be too different from what many of us face on a daily bases.
Some of us have been arbitrarily judged, smashed, squeezed, criticized, and battered for several years because we have failed to be who they want us to be. Different darts and missiles have been thrown at us because they chose to judge us from the first impression they conceived about us. What insult haven’t we received? They will try to judge you by the few words they hear from your mouth.
When you use signs and symbols to communicate national issues, they misconstrue every bit of it as you are either tagged the head of Nigeria Illuminati, or they may even try to put your sexuality to question. However, we still love them, and still fight for them even when they don’t really understand why we are here.
Some have not even realized the need to hold on to the reality that confronts them today, instead, they are committed to producing gunpowder for the celebration of individual blunder, and they swiftly push national blunder aside.

Yes, the NSCDC Commandant goofed, he failed to give the correct NSCDC website, he wanted his oga at the top to announce that personally, hence he couldn’t go ahead to announce it, as his oga may end up announcing another one later. At first, it appeared to me as if he didn’t understand the question until he got to the point of providing the URL of the website, and then we all laughed when he was unable to provide the web address as demanded.
We all laughed at his little or no IT knowledge, and not really because he is not competent enough to do his job. We all laughed because he had displayed some level of confidence right from the beginning of the interview till the point he was to give the website details.
