Atiku blast Buhari at his presidential rally in Yola, says more Nigerians have died now than those killed in Iraqi, Afghanistan (Photos)

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday, insisted that more people have died since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power than those killed in “Iraq and Afghanistan” put together.

The Waziri of Adamawa said this while decrying the large-scale killings in some states in the country.

Addressing a large crowd at his presidential rally in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, Atiku said President Buhari’s government would be remembered more for its bloodshed than any development it brought to the country.

“Today, we are witnessing the most insecure atmosphere.

“More people died under APC than the people killed in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.

Abubakar also said he would reduce inflation and unemployment rate in the country, adding that Buhari has displayed a common lack of capacity when it comes to the issues that matter to citizens.

“Today, we have the highest unemployment rate in history of this country, more than one million of our youth are unemployed.

Abubakar further noted that, “Today, we are more divided than at any other time in Nigeria’s history.”

Nigeria to probe case of stranded Nigerians in Russia

Nigeria has resolved to investigate suspected human trafficking in the case of the 155 Nigerian football fans who got stranded in Russia after the World Cup tournament.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, revealed the plan to probe the incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja where he received the returnees.

The stranded Nigerians, who besieged the nation’s embassy in Moscow on July 12, were safely returned to the country following a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Onyeama said after a discussion with the Director General of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Ms Julie Okah–Donli, it was clear that there were possible cases of human trafficking among the returnees.

“I have spoken to the DG of NAPTIP and she had also indicated that they had sounded the alarm bells for these young children not to leave the country, that it had all the hallmarks of trafficking and irregular migration,” he said.

The minister insisted that some of them, among whom was a nursing mother, were quite too young to have travelled to Russia by themselves solely for the purpose of the World Cup tournament.

He added that an investigation would also be launched into an allegation that some travel agents cancelled the return tickets of the football fans without informing them, leaving them stranded in the European country.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, had revealed the Presidential directive in a statement, following the activities of the travel agents who reportedly cancelled the return tickets of their clients and abandoned them to their fate.

President Buhari had ordered Onyeama and the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, to commence the process of repatriating the stranded Nigerians.

Shehu said the Presidential directive was in line with the policy of the Federal Government to ensure the welfare of all Nigerians in every part of the world.

Nigerian Banks fight on Twitter: See who won

The Picture from the tweet by Sterling Bank that got Nigerian banks fighting

Some Nigerian banks have engaged in a social media battle, throwing banters at each other on their Twitter handles. Some seem to be winning and others are at the receiving end.

Four major banks so far involved in the battle of wits are Sterling Bank, Access Bank, First Bank and Union Bank.

The beef apparently started when Sterling bank took to its twitter handle @Sterling_Banking to post a picture with the inscription: “In shooting for the moon men become stars”

They had below the picture, logos or illustrations that clearly depicted some other Nigerian banks.

First from the left was a man rocking a boat that had the colours used by Access Bank and having symbols contained in Access Bank logo. The next icon was an orange coloured brick (GTB uses orange as its main colour): then a man riding an ‘elephant’ which is majorly used by First Bank, then another man on a rocket coloured in Sterling Bank’s primary colours, heading to a red moon (Sterling bank’s logo): this was then followed by a man riding a white Horse (Horse is the main logo of Union Bank).

Below the picture, another inscription read: “Choose a partner that takes you higher.

Shoot for the moon, become a star – it’s the least you deserve. Welcome to #SterlingBank 😊 pic.twitter.com/Jt7M5AkSSb

— Sterling Bank Plc (@Sterling_Bankng) July 20, 2018

The post by Sterling Bank didn’t quite go down well with some of the banks whose logos or signature animals were depicted as most of them tweeted their clapbacks at the post by Sterling Bank.

First Bank took to its twitter handle @FirstBankngr to tweet a ‘clapback’: “What an elder sees while sitting, a child cannot see even if he travels to the moon. #RespectYourElders #YouFirst

What an elder sees while sitting, a child cannot see even if he travels to the moon. #RespectYourElders #YouFirst

— FirstBank Nigeria (@FirstBankngr) July 21, 2018

Apparently not satisfied with the “comeback”, First Bank again tweeted, this time a GIF image of a rocket crashing right from the skies. The GIF had the inscription: “Mr Burns Groaning.

… And straight into the trash can. #RespectYourElders #MoveOver#NextPlease #YouFirstpic.twitter.com/tkyZe9FVgc

— FirstBank Nigeria (@FirstBankngr) July 21, 2018

Access Bank also followed suit with a comeback punch line when it took to its twitter handle, @myaccessbank to write: “We will travel on an imaginary rocket too, if we were a one-customer Microfinance Bank; but with ten million customers and counting, we rather bring the galaxy to you!.”

— Access Bank Plc (@myaccessbank) July 21, 2018

Union Bank on its part took to its twitter handle @UNIONBANK_NG to take multiple jabs. First it wrote: “Heading to the moon without a spacesuit…journey mercies.”

It went on to tweet another jab where it wrote: “When the elders speak… #SimplerSmarterSAFERBank” with a picture of a dog holding using its paws to close the mouth of another dog.

When the elders speak… #SimplerSmarterSAFERBankpic.twitter.com/xCgYbcniDm

— UNION BANK (@UNIONBANK_NG) July 21, 2018

As if it was not enough, Union Bank went on to tweet: “There’s no coming back after “Ether” or “Story of Adidon”…settle down now, take a deep breath. Back to counting this Naira, Dollars and Pounds…

There’s no coming back after “Ether” or “Story of Adidon”…settle down now, take a deep breath. Back to counting this Naira, Dollars and Pounds… #SimplerSmarterSAFERBankpic.twitter.com/LGSRSsOPtw

— UNION BANK (@UNIONBANK_NG) July 21, 2018

‘Ether’ was the title of one of the best ever dis tracks, where American Rap artists Nas dissed another rap artist Jay-Z, a track which many rap analysts said there was ‘no coming back from’.

A twitter user who sought to know who was the elder among the banks that spoke of themselves as elders also got a punchline response from First Bank which wrote: “Even fathers have fathers; they are called ‘forefathers’. #Babababawon #YouFirst.

The Fight may not be over as of yet as some of the banks that were depicted in the original post are yet to respond to the tweet as at the time of this report.

As for the winner: we leave you to choose for yourself.

Candle light burns baby to death in Onitsha

A 4-month old baby, Chimmuanya Chukwu was on Saturday, burnt to death following a candle fire that gutted a room apartment at Okija Street, Awada in Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the mother of the baby had left the baby at home around 7pm to recharge her torch in the neighborhood when the incident happened.

Narrating her ordeal, the mother of the baby, Mrs Oluchi Chukwu said her baby was fast asleep when the wax of the candle light she litted got exhausted and spread into the inflammable material she laid on.

“I went out to charge my rechargeable torch because there was no electricity within my vicinity when the candle exhausted its wax and melted on an inflammable material leading to the fire which engulfed their room,” she said.

The visibly devastated woman explained that those who assisted in putting out the fire could not rescue the baby as they were ignorant of her presence in the room.

“My baby couldn’t have died if those who came to our rescue were aware that she was inside. It was unfortunate that I lost my baby in such a manner,” she lamented.

Chukwu said she took the baby to a private hospital where she was confirmed dead, adding that she had been buried.

The caretaker of the building, who witnessed the incident, regretted that the baby had died before the inferno was brought under control by neighbors.

A tenant, Innocent Chukwu said the fire could have escalated but for the quick intervention of neighbours.

Nigerian school comes under fire for printing names of indebted students in magazine

A private secondary school based in Ondo State on Saturday came under fire for allegedly printing the names of final year students, who didn’t contribute towards the purchase of a television set in the school.

A Twitter user, Bhadmus Hakeem @Bhadoosky revealed the anguish of parents of the graduating students, who discovered that the names of their children and wards, had been printed in the school’s send-forth magazine as debtors.

What would you do if you find out your child’s name was printed on his/her school’s send forth magazine as “Debtor” because he/she didn’t pay N5000 to buy the school a parting gift? A school you were paying N104,000 per term for six years? Thread

— Bhadmus Hakeem (@Bhadoosky) July 21, 2018

Hakeem in his Twitter thread said that the students were required to contribute the sum of 5,000 naira towards the purchase of a 32″ television set. “Yesterday (20/7/2018), a school in Arigidi Akoko, Ondo state, decided to throw over 24 parents and their children into sorrow on a day they should be the most joyous because they didn’t pay N,5000 to buy the school “32 inches TV”.

On a graduation day, the worst thing you can ever do to a parent and child is make them sad and also document their sadness forever. How do you explain unprofessionalism of this magnitude to people? What were (sic) the school management trying to achieve with this stupidity?”

When our source reached out to the school, they revealed shock at the news, saying that it was the decision of the graduating students to buy a television set for the school as a legacy of their set

According to the School Coordinator, Mr Austin Duyi, “Hundred per cent of the information” posted by Hakeem is “incorrect.”

He said, “SSS three students were the ones that organised the project to help their school and leave a legacy. The person, who posted the malicious information about the school, we don’t know.”

When asked if the students had been the one to put the names of indebted students in the magazine, Duyi said, “In every school magazine, there is a page given to the student to allow themselves to express themselves. They are the ones who wrote everything and said it should be printed.

“It is, therefore, a surprise to us that someone would pick up only that column of the magazine, which is between 60-70 pages. The person didn’t see the good aspects of the school, only the negative. We are shocked.”

Atiku launches presidential bid today

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and frontline presidential aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to launch his presidential bid in Yola today (Saturday).

A statement from his Media office in Abuja said after several months of consultations with critical stakeholders in Nigeria and members of the PDP, he will make a formal declaration to contest the 2019 presidential election under the PDP

The statement noted that Atiku will be making his declaration at a political rally in Yola, the capital of his home state of Adamawa.

According to the press release, Atiku’s decision to join the presidential race in 2019 is in response to the yearnings of the majority of Nigerians to enthrone a government that will fix the country’s broken economy, strengthen national unity and create much-needed jobs for Nigerians.

“After extensive consultations with his family, Nigerians of diverse dispensations at home and abroad, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar has decided to make a formal bid for the 2019 presidential election race under the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”, the statement said.

Atiku Abubakar has embarked on nationwide consultative visits to many states across the country where he met with stakeholders in the PDP. He has visited all but one of the states in the South-South geopolitical zone, as well as some states in the South-East geo-political zone.

Just this week, the former Vice President and leading presidential hopeful, embarked on visitations to states in the North-East zone where he met with stakeholders from Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Taraba and culminating with a grand rally in his honour by the Adamawa State Peoples Democratic Party in Yola on Saturday, 21 July.

The release, however, notes that the consultative visits to other geopolitical zones of the country will continue in earnest after the formal declaration.

It notes further that Atiku’s declaration today will be followed with the unveiling of a policy document that will give a clear direction to the solutions that the former Vice President hopes to bring to bear in governance if elected president of the country.

“The campaign’s policy documents being baked by policy experts from diverse backgrounds and youth professionals across the country will be unveiled as soon as the process is concluded.

“The policy document covers a large area of Nigeria’s national life including the economy, restructuring, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth and women development among many others”, the statement added.

The statement thanks PDP stakeholders from states already visited for the warm reception accorded the former Vice President and his delegation and remarks that “Atiku looks forward to a robust consultation in visits to other states on his schedule.”

‘Mikel Obi has not spoken to me in 5 years’ – father

Chief Michael Obi, the father of professional footballer and Super Eagles Captain, John Mikel Obi, has opened up on the kind of relationship he shares with his celebrity son.

Pa Obi, 74, said that were it not for an opportunity created by the just concluded World Cup in Russia, it would have been five years since he last spoke to Mikel on phone.

According to him, the Super Eagles’ skipper once confided in one of his brothers that anytime he wants to call their dad, something tells him not to do so.

He said in an interview with Daily Trust newspaper: “My relationship with Mikel is an issue, but we don’t know what to do. It’s over five years now without a phone call from him to me. But he communicates with his mother.

“There is nothing I have not done to fix it. God has told me that I should not feel hurt. When we start to talk about it, I say, ‘Well, as long as I see him on TV, doing great, no problem’.

“During the just-concluded World Cup, one or two days to one of their matches, we spoke. He called his mum, and she told me that Nchekwube (Mikel) was on the phone and I told him that God will see him through. I prayed for him. That’s it.

“When he first joined Chelsea, my people in Anambra were very happy that God has blessed their son, and when he came to Abuja, they prepared very well with the hope that he will come to our hometown. They even made some magazines. It was grand. But he didn’t come. It was a shameful thing to me, as a father.

“He once told his brother that sometimes he picks his phone to call me, but something tells him not to.

“Sometime last year, he was to bring his twins so that I could name them, he said he would. But he didn’t. His other colleagues frequent home, so I don’t understand.”

Delta APC splits as Oshiomhole replaces exco sworn in by Oyegun

Crisis has erupted in Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This followed National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole’s inauguration of the Prophet Jones Erue-led executive.

Former National Chairman, John Odige-Oyegun, had sworn in the Chief Cyril Ogodo-led state executive.

Speaking on the matter, National Vice Chairman, South-South, APC, Ntufam Hilliard Eta, denied claims that Oshiomhole was dismantling Oyegun’s structure in Delta.

“The national chairman of the party, Comrade Oshiomhole, did not swear in Prophet Jones Erue as Delta state chairman of APC unilaterally. Erue was sworn in with the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party in attendance”, he told Vanguard.

“We believe that due process was followed in the election of Prophet Erue and his executive. It is not an attempt by the party to favour any group in the party. What we have done is to follow the rule of law.

“It is laughable for any person to say that the inauguration of Erue executive was to hand over governorship ticket to Ogboru when the party had declared few days back that it was going to adopt direct primary option.

“Even the Delta state leadership of APC cannot determine who is going to be the governorship candidate, the power is with the party faithful, not to talk of the national leaders of the party, who are far-off in Abuja and other places.”

On why the party did not wait for the Reconciliation Committee, headed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, he said: “The question will be best answered by the national chairman or Kachikwu himself.”

In his reaction, Chief Ogodo said: “As the chairman of the party, I was not at any meeting where Ogboru was given the nod to become our governorship candidate.

“But the body language of the national leadership is that they want to give the structure to Ogboru. And that is already clear and Ogboru is beaming with smiles now.”

Arewa youths blast presidency for attacking Northern elders, Afenifere, others

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, has come hard on the presidency for attacking the coalition of Nigerian socio-political groups.

It had in a strong worded statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Shehu Garba, condemned the gathering of prominent elders that passed a vote of no confidence on the President Muhammadu Buhari government for its failure to end the incessant killing of innocent Nigerians by suspected Fulani herdsmen in various parts of the country.

The coalition of Northern Elders’ Forum, NEF, Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Pan Niger Delta Forum had during the week, passed a vote of no-confidence on Buhari, over what they described as the President’s inability to find a lasting solution to the country’s problems.

In a statement AYCF entitled “This Insensitive Presidency”, signed and forwarded to DAILY POST on Saturday by its National President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, the group said, “Our attention has been drawn to the intemperate and highly immature response by the Presidency to the historic summit of the Northern Elders Forum, Afenifere, Ohanaeze and PANDEF on the spate of killings in Nigeria under the incompetent government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It is sad that instead of facing the honest assessment of the killing fields Nigeria has become under this government by elders and leaders who have nothing at stake but the best interest of Nigeria, the Presidency resorted to crude attacks and motor park insults.

“To say that elders who have no material needs in their very old years are shedding ‘crocodile tears’ because a government that has been rated the most corrupt in this history has blocked their access to public funds is laughable as a ridiculous claim but sad because it reflects how petty and shallow the minds of those in charge of our affairs are.

“The response has confirmed the take of the leaders that Nigeria needs a dynamic and visionary leadership to take over from the current incompetent, insensitive and visionless bunch running the country to the edge of the precipice.

“We understand that the coming together of patriots from every corner of Nigeria to take a common stand against the misgovernance called government in our country has robbed this presidency of its desperate card of divide- and-rule of playing sections of the country against themselves.

“It is now clear that this government represents no section of Nigeria except the cabal of evil doers .

This achievement of oneness that is now driving the administration to extreme desperation is a good reason for the very senior citizens across Nigeria to ignore the vituperation of a sinking administration.

“The Northern and Southern Elders and Leaders deserve commendation for voluntarily brainstorming on the way out of the current stagnation has regrettably changed the true face of governance in today’s Nigeria.”

Adegboruwa sues Joe Igbokwe over Facebook post against Supreme Court

Popular human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has dragged the Lagos state publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe before a Federal High Court, Lagos, seeking to sanction him for accusing the Supreme Court of selling justice to the governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Igbokwe had written on his Facebook page: “Wike will not have the audacity and the temerity to kill again in Rivers state and run to the Supreme Court to buy Justice. It will never happen again in Nigeria where Buhari is President.”

In a 32 paragraph affidavit deposed to in support of the new suit, Mr. Adegboruwa claimed that Mr. Igbokwe’s post was capable of generating loss of confidence in the judicial system.

According to him, such a situation of zero confidence in the judiciary could discourage people from seeking redress from the law courts and which would in turn lead to lawlessness and resort to self-help and rule of the might.

He also said that it will lead to loss of patronage for lawyers, who would no longer be able to handle cases in court, given that it is now possible to buy justice with money.

Adegboruwa contended that as a public officer, Mr. Igbokwe should not be involved in disparaging other public institutions and that his offending post is a clear case of abuse of public trust for which he should be sanctioned appropriately.

He contended further that the Attorney-General of the Federation, being the leader of the official Bar in Nigeria and chief law officer of the federation, was the one best placed to take up the case against Mr. Igbokwe, on behalf of the judiciary, lawyers and indeed the general public.

The rights lawyer disclosed that before filing the suit, he took up the Facebook post with Mr. Igbokwe asking him to substantiate his claims.

Similarly, the Rivers State Government also demanded explanations from Mr. Igbokwe and threatened court action.

Subsequently, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, invited security agencies to probe Mr. Igbokwe’s allegations and deal with the judges found culpable and if the allegations are false, to take appropriate steps to prosecute Mr. Igbokwe.

Rather than withdraw the offending post, Mr. Igbokwe proceeded to issue a more comprehensive post, wherein he specifically stated that the Chief Justice of Nigeria was under the influence and payroll of Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Reliefs sought in the case are also follows: “A declaration that Joe Igbokwe is not entitled to make any statement to the effect that a judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria was bought and paid for.

“A declaration that the statement of Joe Igbokwe, to the effect that the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria was bought and paid for is reckless, unjustifiable and amounts to an unwarranted denigration of the integrity and authority of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in particular and the judiciary in general.

“A declaration that Joe Igbokwe is not a fit and proper person to be elected or appointed into or to hold any public office in any part of the federation of Nigeria.

“An order directing the Abubakar Malami to forthwith interview, engage and demand proof from the 2nd defendant, of the latter’s statement that the judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria was bought and paid for, failing which the said 1st defendant should forthwith prosecute the saidJoe Igbokwe.

“Perpetual injunction restraining Joe Igbokwe, his servants, officers and agents, or otherwise howsoever, from further issuing, uttering, publishing or making any statement, of and concerning the judiciary and the legal profession in Nigeria, capable of undermining the credibility, authority, integrity and sanctity of judgments of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and of all other courts in in Nigeria, generally.

“An order directing Joe Igbokwe to forthwith vacate, relinquish and surrender any and all public positions that he presently occupies.”

Hold Oshiomhole, Masari responsible if anything happens to me – R-APC chairman, Galadima

Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), Buba Galadima, has asked Nigerians to hold the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and their National Welfare Officer, Ibrahim Masari, responsible if anything happens to him.

In an interview with Vanguard, Galadima claimed Oshiomhole is an “usurper”, who was not among those who signed APC’s Memorandum of Association.

He also made reference to statements made by Oshiomhole, where the former Edo Governor vowed to “crush” him”.

“I have read the new national chairman say there are still PDP members in APC and they should go.

“Oshiomhole was not part of the APC. When we were signing the memorandum of association with other parties that formed the APC, Oshiomhole was not there. I didn’t see his signature and I didn’t see his face. I look at him as a usurper but I want to say; you know desperate people and drowning people can do anything.

“Adams Oshiomhole, the purported chairman of APC and Ibrahim Masari, the purported national welfare officer have made statements in the press, both in print and electronic media that they will crush me. That means that they can kill me.

“So, should anything happen to me, the nation and the world should hold them responsible. They can use state powers to detain me. They can use state powers to eliminate me. I want this to be on record and I want this recorded. To crush means anything.

“They have no confidence in themselves in engaging me in a public discourse for the world to know who is right and who is wrong. So, they want to use extra means to deal with me. I have the papers; I have the audio and the video,” Galadima said.

Obasanjo to Nigerian women - Free yourselves from ‘the other room’

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday in Ibadan charged Nigerian women to fight for their political and economic relevance instead of accepting to be confined to the other room.

Obasanjo spoke on the topic, ‘My understanding of women aspiration in business and politics’ at an event organised by Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria and The American Corner, Ibadan.

At the programme, which was held in support of women’s participation in government, political processes and the work place, Obasanjo said it was a huge shame that no woman was among the 50 people that drew the Nigerian constitution. He said he encouraged women to join politics by ensuring that nine women were chosen to serve in his cabinet when he was the president.

He pointed out that Nigeria was ranked far below South Africa, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Mauritania among countries that encouraged women in politics.

He said, “No longer should our women allow themselves to be consigned only to the ‘other room’ and the kitchen. In 2017, according to the United Nations, gender inequality cost Africa $95bn. That is tremendous waste. We cannot continue heaping up waste and expect that we will not maintain our poor record of being the world’s poverty headquarters. The starting point is girl child education. Child marriage must be made unlawful.”

He said women should make definite efforts to fight for their place in politics and economy, as women and children are usually the direct and indirect victims of poor leadership. He said men would not relinquish their position willingly.

The Public Affairs Officer at the United States Consulate, Lagos, Ms. Darcy Zotter, had earlier called on Nigerian women to trigger the agent of 21st century positive change in them by increasing their political awareness and challenging men for political space.

“You don’t have to be a superwoman, you have a vote and you can be the 21st century change maker,” she added.

No matter how small I am, I have a postal address -Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says no matter how smallish he is, he has a postal address.

Oshiomhole said this on Friday while speaking with journalists after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The chairman was asked why the party was planning to hold congresses in Imo state despite a court order.

But Oshiomhole said he had not been served a restraining order, adding that it was on the basis of the court order that annulled the congresses that the party conducted another one.

“It is going on. I know for a fact that we were served with a court paper which annulled the congresses that were done under the leadership of my predecessor and on the basis of the court judgement which annulled the election, we were obliged to now go back and reconduct which is what we are doing today,” the chairman said.

“If anybody purports that there is a new court order, it has not been served on me. You will agree no matter how smallish I look, I have a postal address, house address, an office address. So, it’s not possible to have a court order and it is not served on me.

“I do not belong the category that will run away from service, if there is a court order as a governing party we are obliged to lead by example. So, the truth is there is no such court order. There is no stay of execution. A stay of execution is not something that is secret, if somebody claims to have one, ask him to show you a copy.”

British Government mocks Nigeria over vote-buying in Ekiti

The British Government has frowned at the alleged vote-buying, which marred the recent Ekiti State governorship election.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, described vote-buying as a form of electoral misconduct like rigging and ballot stuffing.

He stated this while addressing journalists shortly after a meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Friday.

He said, “I was there in Ekiti to monitor elections and I heard a lot of reports of alleged vote buying and we are convinced that some vote buying went on. I condemn it. Vote buying is illegal; it is against the law, it is just as vote rigging, it is just as bad as ballot stuffing.

“We cannot make a distinction when all these activities are illegal so I condemn that. What are we going to do about it? Well we just had a meeting with the chairman of INEC, we have been talking about public awareness and how the political parties themselves can take responsibility for condemning this action and not continuing it.

“We do hope that 2019 will be free, fair, credible and of course, peaceful elections.”

The British envoy, however, commended INEC for the conduct of elections in recent times, saying the UK government had faith in INEC and its leadership.

He added, “I think the election process itself went well, the materials were there, the security forces kept their distance and did manage to keep a peaceful election and we are seeing progress in how INEC is carrying out each election. So, we have confidence in INEC and the chairman.

“The UK has been a very strong supporter of INEC and together with the USAID, we are spending about $60m over a six-year period in support of deepening democracy in Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Department for International Development Secretary of State, Penny Maudaunt, advised security agencies to be neutral in conduct even as the 2019 general elections approached.

Maudaunt said, “Though the elections were largely peaceful and results widely endorsed by stakeholders, vote buying by both the main political parties was widely criticised.

“There is time to tackle some of the challenges noted before next year’s elections. But INEC will not be able to solve all electoral problems on its own. Everyone in society has a role to play and a contribution to make.

“Political parties must respect a code of conduct adhering to the highest standards. We encourage security agencies to remain visibly neutral and ensure a safe and secure environment for the electorate.”

Jonathan’s ex-aide, Omokri reacts to FG’s refusal to free Dasuki, warns Buhari

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday reacted to the Federal Government’s refusal to release embattled former National Security Adviser, NSA, Sambo Dasuki.

Dasuki was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, in December 2015, over his alleged involvement in illegal possession of firearms.

The former NSA was also accused of diverting $2.1billion from his office while he served as NSA.

He is facing separate trials for the alleged offences.

Since his arrest in 2015, Dasuki has been granted bail multiple times by different courts. The latest bail was approved on July 17.

However, the Nigerian government had said the former NSA can’t be set free because he was responsible for the death of over 100,000 Nigerians.

Reacting, Omokri warned that President Muhammadu Buhari may be the next to be incarcerated over several deaths so far recorded.

In a tweet, Omokri wrote: “Buhari can keep holding Dasuki, but he should remember that he will leave power one day. He should also remember that his administration killed at least 347 innocent and unarmed Shiite men, women, children and infants. Who knows who will be free tomorrow and who will be in jail.”

Fire razes Terminus market in Jos

Traders from different ethnic nationalities on Saturday morning broke down in tears following a fire outbreak which gutted the popular Terminus Market in Jos.

The market which is mostly populated by Igbo businessmen was said to have been destroyed some years ago following a bomb explosion which was allegedly linked with the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
During the latest fire incident which was said to have started last night, several warehouses were burnt to ashes.

The total amount of money lost to the incident could not be ascertained as of the time of this report. The spokesperson of Plateau State Police Command, Matthias Tyopev, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the fire incident in an interview with newsmen.

He said, “Yes, there was a fire incident at the popular Terminus market in Jos. Goods and warehouses were destroyed. The Plateau State Commissioner of Police (Undie Adie), and chairman of Jos North Local Government Area were there to ascertain the level of damage and you will get the details from me later.

“For now, we can’t estimate the total amount lost because of the fire because so many people were involved; the money lost unquantifiable because the fire incident was very severe.”

How we abducted Chibok girls in 2014 — Boko Haram commanders

Following the recent arrest of 22 members and commanders of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, shocking revelations have emerged on the murderous activities of the sect.

It was gathered that three commanders of the Civilian Joint Task Force, an outfit created by the Borno State Government, to assist the Nigeria Military in trailing and arresting members of the sect, were among those arrested by the IRT, for giving out operational information of the military   to members of the sect.

Eight other suspects also confessed during interrogations that they were part of the group that carried out the April 2014, kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls from a government secondary school, in Chibok area of Borno State.

When Vanguard interviewed the suspects, some of the commanders, foot soldiers and informants narrated their roles and the various tasks executed for the group.

Maita Alhaji Modu alias Abu, a   20-year-old Boko Haram commander from Bama Local Government of Borno State,  who was a farmer and had no formal education confessed that he took an active part in the 2014 kidnap of Chibok schoolgirls and he was equally responsible for moving young girls who were used for suicide bombings  from Sambisa Forest into Maiduguri Town.

He said as  a commander, he had been fighting for the sect since 2011 and assisted the group in taking over several towns, villages. He said he also participated in ambush attacks across the Northeastern states of Nigeria and some parts of Niger, Chad and Cameroon.   He disclosed that the leadership of the group usually paid each fighter the sum of N30,000 after each attack.

Narrating how the group carried out the April 2014 Chibok school girls attack, he said; “one of our commanders, who received direct orders from our leader, Abubakar Shekau,   Bana Chungori, called out over 100 of us and we all assembled at the   Sambisa Forest.

He told us that our leader, Shekau had ordered that we should all go to Chibok Local Government and kidnap some school girls at the school. We couldn’t ask questions, because it was a direct order from Shekau and we all mounted our trucks.

We had five big military trucks, three Toyota Hilux vans and two Isuzu pickup trucks. We left Sambisa Forest around 5pm that evening and arrived the school around 10pm.

We surrounded the school when we arrived and when we were certain that there would be no resistance, Chungori gave orders that we should all go in and we found the girls running in fear. We kidnapped many of them and took them away in our trucks.

When we got to the entrance of the Sambisa Forest, Chungori asked all the foot soldiers and other lower commanders including me to leave the truck because he was to take the girls to Shekau, whose camp was deep inside the forest.

I didn’t see the girls again because I was not close to Shekau, but I was paid the sum of N30,000 on the day of the kidnapping and I was also given the sum of N60,000 after a set of ransom was paid for the release of the girls.”

Abu also said; “sometime in December 2014, two of our top commanders; Bakura and Ibrahim, ordered me to take two girls with suicide vests to Maiduguri town and supervise them until they had detonated their bombs.

But each time I got to Maiduguri, I would not go into the Metropolis with them and I would leave them at the outskirt of the town and before you knew it they would have detonated their bombs. The first one they did was at Muna garage and the second was at Dalori which was also on the outskirt of Maiduguri town.

A member of the group, Adam, who had a taxi in Maiduguri, then called our commander and told him that the suicide bombers I had been bringing in had been unable to enter into the town where they were large crowds of people and since he was a taxi driver, he could always help us locate densely populated areas where people could be killed in larger numbers, if only my commanders would pay him.

They agreed on N200,000 per mission and each time I took the girls from Sambisa forest, I would   take them to Adam, who would then take the girls into Maiduguri metropolis and after each successful attack, I was the person who used to take his money to him.   My commanders used to pay me between N60,000 to N70, 000 after each operation. I wasn’t doing this because of my Islamic faith, I was just doing this because of the money.” he stated.

I was paid N200,000 to take suicide bombers to target locations—Mustapher

21-year-old Adam Mustapher, a native of Maiduguri told Vanguard that he joined the sect in 2009 when Mohammed Yusuf, its founder was alive, but he didn’t take part in the fight at the beginning, because he was too young. But he said he became attracted to the group in 2014 when he realized people were making money from the group’s activities.

He also confessed that his job as a member since 2014 was to take young girls being used for suicide bombings to their target locations and he normally earned N200,000 for each operation; “I attended only an Islamic school and I didn’t complete my education.   I am a taxi driver and I have been in the business in the last four years.   I joined the Boko Haram Sect in the year 2009 when the founder Mohammed Yusuf was still alive.

I used to pray with the sect in their mosque but I didn’t join in the fight from the beginning, I went underground. But I rejoined the group four years ago when one Ibrahim, a member of the group approached me with the idea of buying stolen cows and other livestock from the group, which I would sell in Maiduguri.

I made so much money from the business, but that my friend Ibrahim was later killed during an encounter with some soldiers. I bought a vehicle with the money I made and the group then gave me a new assignment which was for me to always convey suicide bombers, who were mainly young girls, from the Sambisa forest, with their suicide vests to their target locations.

The person   who normally took the girls from   Sambisa forest to Muma Garage in Maiduguri, where I would pick them up, was one Abu, who has also been arrested.  Sometimes I got instruction from Sambisa forest on where the suicide bombers would attack and where there was none I would take them to any area where I felt the casualty figure would be very high.

But my targets were usually densely populated areas and before I received the girls from Abu, I normally drove round the town to find areas that were populated.

I took the suicide bombers to several places such as Post Office area of Maiduguri, where they carried out attacks, I also took them twice to Baga Road, Monday market, 33 Army barracks, and several other places where so many people lost their lives during the attack.  I was usually paid N200,000 after each successful mission.

My last mission was on the 10th  of May 2018 in an operation we carried out at 33, Army Barracks in Maiduguri.     In one of my operations on Baga Road, one of my younger brothers was killed during the suicide bomb attacks, I felt very bad about the incident and I wanted to quit but I couldn’t because the money they promised me was tempting.   But I regret everything I have done now. I don’t know how the police learnt about me, I was in my house when they came and arrested me.”

I supplied food items, sold diamonds for   Boko Haram—Mala

One of the group’s logistic suppliers, 48-year-old Ibrahim Mala, a native of Goza local Government area of Borno State, said as a security man at a petrol station, he earned just N5,000 monthly which made him to join the group.  “ I am a member of Boko Haram and I am one of the group’s logistic suppliers.

I met the group through one Arramma, who brought one Abu to me and they asked me to buy some stolen rams and goats from them. I bought the livestock for N22,000 and then they told me that they were members of the Boko Haram.

They then requested me to be their supplier.   Sometimes they brought money to me from the Sambia forest to help them buy food items and other things they would need and after buying the items, I would keep them in my house and call them on the phone to come and pick up the items.

They would then come at night to carry the items.   They usually paid me the sum of N100,000 on each trip. But in the month March they brought some diamonds for me to sell for them and they also linked me to one Alhaji Talba Gonie, who resided at Zageri Ward, on Baga Road, who they said knew how to sell the diamonds.

After selling the diamonds, Alahjai Talba Gonie would hand over the money to me and the sect members would instruct me on what they needed me to buy for them with some of the money after which they would come and pick them and the balance of their money. I sold the diamonds for them on five occasions and they rewarded me handsomely, but I don’t know where they got the diamonds from. I bought a land with the money I made from my dealings with the group.

But I am regretting my actions because I was once a Boko Haram victim as they killed my uncle and his son, when they attacked my village in 2014 but the money they offered to pay me if I became their supplier was so tempting. Even my wife wasn’t happy that I joined the group but there was nothing she could do about it”, he lamented.

Mohammed Bashiri, 34-year-old member of the civilian JTF, which was set up to work against the Boko Haram sect, said he opted to work for the sect, because he was not earning any money as a Civilian JTF but the sect was ready to pay him for information he passed across to them.

According to him,  “I was part of the group that formed civilian JTF in 2012, and I also joined the military in fighting against the sect, but the government was not paying me then and I was forced to join Boko Haram.   It was one Adam who lured me into the group and I became his informant.

I used my position as a civilian JTF to pass information to him and whenever he wanted to take supplies to Boko Haram in Sambisa forest, he would need me to give him information about movement of military men.

He used to pay me N10,000 on each information I gave to him and he promised that the group would soon reward me handsomely.

Drop vengeance, release Dasuki – Ozekhome begs Buhari

Human Rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to release the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki who has been granted bail six times by different courts.

Ozekhome, in a letter to Buhari on Thursday tagged, “President Muhammadu Buhari, Please, Release Col. Sambo Dasuki in God’s Name”, insists Dasuki has not been convicted by any court of law to have warranted the long detention since December 2015.

Ozekhome, making references to the various bails including the one by ECOWAS Court, said a situation where government picks court order is dangerous.

He said, “We are having the dangerous situation where this government picks and chooses which orders to obey or disobey, an anarchical situation.

“The same government has so far refused to obey several orders for the release of the Shittes leader, El-Zakzaki. This is clearly against constitutionalism and the Rule of Law.”

The legal luminary further pleaded with the President to give Dasuki a lifeline by releasing him on bail.

“Mr President sir, in the name of almighty Allah, the Supreme God we all serve, let Dasuki go home on bail. Give him a breather. He has a family, friends and dependants to care for. He has not yet been convicted by any court of law.

“He is still presumed innocent under section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution.

“Give him a lifeline. Help us build strong institutions, not strong men. I appeal to you sir, on my bended kneels. Let the milk of human kindness flow in you. Seek ye not vengeance. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but give place unto wrath; for it is written, vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord (Romans 12:19).

“The Rule of law doctrine theorises, amongst others, that: all people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law, the principle of government of law.

“The rule of law means that no person or government is above the law; that there is restriction of arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws. It means that no person however highly placed, is above the law, whether law makers, law enforcement officials, judges or persons in government”.

Buhari says Nigeria is ready to assist distressed African countries

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to assist African countries in distress.

President Buhari stated this When he received the outgoing High Commissioner of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Mrs Haja Afsatu Kabba, at the State House, Abuja, on Friday.

The President said brotherly assistance extended to the West African country during the Ebola epidemic and the recent mudslide natural disaster, was the least Nigeria could do

“I congratulate your new President on his election, and believe that our long-standing relationship, which dates back to almost 60 years, will continue to flourish,” he said.

He wished Kabba, who had spent two years in Nigeria, the best of luck in her next assignment.

The outgoing High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the government and people of Nigeria for the support granted her and her country.

She expressed optimism that the good bilateral relations between Nigeria and her country would continue.

Vote-buying, insecurity threats to 2019 polls — Groups

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) have listed vote buying and insecurity as some of the possible disrupters of the 2019 general elections.

Dr Christopher Fomunyoh, NDI Regional Director for Central and West Africa, made this known at a news briefing in Abuja on Friday.

Fomunyoh said the delegation came to assess current political and electoral environment, preparations, and make recommendations in the build-up to 2019.

He said that the delegation met with senior officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), leaders of political parties, civil organisations, media and senior government officials.

He said the delegation also watched the voting process in Ekiti gubernatorial election and deeply appreciated Nigerians for sharing their views.

“The delegation notes that the 2019 presidential race and other polls in the states will likely be closely contested and take place against the backdrop of shifting political alliances and significant security concerns,

“It also heard repeated frustrations about the continued role that money plays in Nigerian politics, from how candidates are selected to how parties seek to influence voters.

“Nigerians with whom the delegation met also voiced concerns about the state of insecurity in parts of the county and how that could impact negatively on the elections.

“Nigeria faces security challenges from a number of non-state actors that if unchecked could disrupt the electoral process, Boko Haram continues to carry out terrorist attacks on communities in the North-East.’’

Fomunyoh said that terrorists attacks, clashes between pastoralists and farmers were on the rise and the conflicts were further exacerbated by illicit trade in weapons and stolen cattle by criminals.

He said that the inability of security forces to quell this inter-communitarian violence, given political and religious overtones, if not addressed, could erode confidence in government.

He said that persistent insecurity and violence had led to high numbers of internally displaced persons in the North-East and Middle Belt that could pose specific challenges for the conduct of elections.

Mr Jan Surotchak, IRI Regional Director for Europe,  said many Nigerians who interfaced with the delegation expressed frustration with political parties that seemed as personality-driven and lacking in internal democracy.

Surotchak said that squabbles over selection of convention delegates and leadership in the states generated tensions within parties.

He said that party primaries ahead of 2019 would soon commence and should candidates be imposed by party leaders through undemocratic means, such actions could lead to fragmentation and violence and could alienate voters.

He said that high cost of politicking and opaque candidate selection processes were particularly challenging for women, youths and persons with disabilities to overcome.

Surotchak  noted that Nigeria had one of the lowest levels of women in elected office within West Africa.

Surotchak said that the inclusion of youths, women and persons with disabilities would facilitate the emergence of broad range of new leaders to reflect the ingenuity and dynamism of the Nigerian population.

He said that the Ekiti election witnessed vote buying thus some Nigerians expressed concerns to the delegation about the increase on its visibility .

He said that vote buying was an electoral offence which undermined the legitimacy of elections and weakened representative democracy.

He said that the lack of enforcement or punishments for this electoral offence had allowed the practice to persist and grow` `Vote buying is a frightening development in elections.’’

Surotchak called for a check on the social media ahead of 2019, adding that Nigerians told the delegation that the platform was already rift with politically-related content.

He said that hate speech and the denigration of opponents could heighten tensions and increase potential for election-related violence.

He said there was need to allay the fears of Nigerians on the persisting insecurity and the threat of violence as these could dampen citizen participation in 2019.

He said the delegation highlighted its observations so as create awareness on the possible issues that could hamper election in the country and make plans to avert it ahead of 2019.

He said that these issues when adhered to and addressed would boost citizens’ confidence in the election and strengthen democracy.

Bayelsa airport ready August 27, Buhari to perform inauguration

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the much-awaited Bayelsa State International Airport, located at Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, will be ready on August 27, 2018.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, and the Managing Director, Bayelsa Airline, Capt. Henry Ungbuku, made this known on Friday while conducting select journalists around the airport project.

They said that the airport project, which was commissioned by the Seriake Dickson administration in 2012,  would be personally inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on the take-off date (August 27, 2018) after test flights a week earlier.

Specifically, Iworiso-Markson said the multi-billion naira international airport is one of the legacy projects that would change the economic fortunes of the state and bring about prosperity for the people.

He said the airport would create massive job opportunities for Bayelsans and would be a leading investment destination as well as a hub for business when it becomes fully operational.

Iworiso-Markson stated, “There will be more business opportunities, more investment opportunities and more revenue. It is indeed a dream come through for us as a government. We are so excited about this project because of the massive benefits the state and our people will derive from it.

‘’The airport is a testament of the commitment and dedication of the government of Seriake Dickson to open up this state and show to the world our huge potential. This is the heart of the Niger Delta, this is the Jerusalem of the Ijaw nation and this airport will give us a new narrative.

‘’I want our people to know that this is not politics, it is development, and we have often said that we don’t play politics with development.

This airport will be used by all political parties irrespective of party affiliation; so nobody should politicize this project.”

He said that the airport is fully funded by the state government after the Federal Government pulled out from an earlier agreement which would have seen it provide counterpart funds for the construction of the terminal building, control tower, hangar and fire bay.

He expressed gratitude to Dickson for his vision and foresight, noting that it took only a serious leader like him to carry out an ambitious project such as that even in a recession.

Nigeria Air: Buhari deceiving Nigerians, Presidency using national carrier to siphon billions – PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari should “perish the thought of trying to use the unveiling of a nonexistent national carrier to beguile Nigerians now that election is around the corner”

PDP claimed that the new national carrier was a plot by the Buhari’s Presidency to allegedly siphon billions of naira.

The party said it was unfortunate that “having run out of fake promises and not having any development project to parade,” Buhari and his party, All Progressives Congress, APC, have “now resorted to international kite-flying aimed at hoodwinking unsuspecting Nigerians.”

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party said,

“Is it not comical that while other nations are unveiling and rolling out real planes, the Buhari administration, in a most hilarious manner, is ‘unveiling’ drawings of an airplane, name, logo and imaginary routes of a nonexistent fleet, as our national carrier, in faraway London?

“What President Buhari and his handlers fail to understand is that Nigerians can see through their fraud and lies.

“Apart from drawings of airplanes, there are no structures to indicate that a new airline, billed to commence operation in December this year, is being set up; there are no offices, no recruitment of personnel and no form of ground activity anywhere in the country.

“Does it not smack of pure scam that less than six months to commence operations, the supposed new airline has not even started the process of licensing, even when it takes a minimum of six months for a new airline to obtain Air Operating License and three months to develop its manuals?

“Furthermore, every discerning mind can see through the lies in the announced private sector funding, as the Buhari administration has been unable to list any private investor it has gone into negotiation or signed any form of deal with in the said project.

“If the Buhari administration is not on a fantasy trip to beguile Nigerians and pave further ways for its humongous corruption, it should have focused on our existing national carrier structures, in addition to three operating airlines, already taken over by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

“It is therefore clear that the entire project is a huge scam and that the five percent government funding is a direct ploy by the cabal at the Buhari Presidency to siphon billions of naira, using a phantom project.”

Obasanjo wants another term through the back door -Oshiomole

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of seeking another term through the backdoor.

Speaking with state house correspondents on Friday, Oshiomhole described Obasanjo as organising secretary going about to “recruit tired politicians to continue his term”.

He dismissed reports that the ruling party is being hit my massive defections, saying it is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that is suffering mass defection.

“I think this is what you should ask the PDP, they are the ones who have suffered huge mass defection even of the so-called founding fathers. In those good old days people like Professor Jerry Gana will tell us that we are the founding fathers, people like president Obasanjo will tell you that I was the first president and all those stuff, all of these people are gone,” he said.

“I think the media should get more engaged and scrutinize those of us who are political players, especially when we speak from both sides of our mouths, or we know are turning the truth upside down.

“Just few months back, you know that a good number after their convention, people like Prof. Oyediran, Jerry Gana, who are said to be founding fathers of the party left to form what is called the SDP. So, they broke out and when it dawn on them that even together we defeated them just four years ago, now further factionalized what can they do?

“And there is no better proof than that old man who is going round as an organising secretary, recruiting people, looking for tired players to continue with his third term agenda which Nigerians have rejected.”
