Nigerian Girl Honoured In U.K
The Nigeria High Commission in the UK has honoured Miss Chidera Ota who excelled in the 2010 GCSE in the UK with 15 As.
The Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ota, 16, garnered the highest grades in English Literature and English Language; Mathematics, Statistics, French, German, Latin, History, Sociology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and IT qualifications equivalent to three GCSE's.
Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to the UK, Amb. Dozie Nwanna described her feat as exemplary and highly commendable.
"You have wiped our face and brought pride and honour not only to your parents but to the country and other Nigerians living in the UK,'' Nwanna said.
He said Nigeria was full of talents and outstanding personalities who have continued to excelled in various walks of life at home and abroad, making them deserving of recognition and celebration.
Also, the Head of Chancery in the Mission, Mr Ahmed Umar, said the initiative to honour Ota was a further attestation to the High Commission's policy of recognising and celebrating Nigerian achievers in the UK.
"This is consistent with the rebranding and image making policy of the Federal Government,'' Umar added.
Ota, who wants to become a medical doctor, told NAN in an interview that she studied Latin twice a week during lunch break to meet up with the challenges.
"I stayed home a lot and put in a lot of work for my GCSE's because I want to become a doctor though I know it is a very hard and competitive field, and I know I need to do extremely well to get into medicine,'' she said.
Ota has already secured a scholarship to attend King's School in Canterbury where she will study Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A-levels.

Michelle Obama and friends see 'Fela!' on Broad
The audience at Thursday's performance of "Fela!" on Broadway got an extra thrill when an unannounced guest arrived — the first lady.
Michelle
Obama and six girlfriends stunned theatergoers when she arrived at the
Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 49th Street to catch the TonyAward-winning musical about Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat artist and Nigerian political activist.
"When
the audience realized that she was in the audience, they just went
nuts," said Stephen Hendel, who co-conceived and produced the show.
"People started standing up and applauding, saying 'We love you!' and
'We love you, Michelle!' It took a minute or so to get the audience to
settle down."
The
musical features dancers mingling with the audience and the first
lady's group was seated along Row G, where many of the dancers cross
over. The Secret Service asked the dancers not to change their
performance but to give Obama some extra space.
Hendel
was one of only few people who knew ahead of time that the first lady
was coming. The cast was only told 20 minutes before Obama's arrival.
She and her friends arrived shortly after 8 p.m. as the overture was
ending.
The
audience also cheered wildly when the musical made reference in the
first act to one of Kuti's nicknames: Black President. Said Hendel:
"The whole place just exploded."
At
the end, the first lady's group gave the musical a standing ovation and
Obama stayed to greet and congratulate each sweaty member of the cast
as they passed. "She was hugely gracious," said Hendel, who watched the
night's performance with his wife, Ruth, also one of the show's producers.
"It's a wonderful feeling that this show would have Mrs. Obama come t

Pretty And Saucy Ghanaian Actress Yvonne Nelson Receives 1 Year Ban.
The gossip windmills had been grinding the rumour for some time now, it has been confirmed that indeed sexy Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has been banned for a year in Ghana and in Nigeria.
Multiple accounts of recurring public displays of obscene language and behaviour from the actress towards colleagues and decision makers have finally caught up with her. The ban originated from a complaint filed by the Venus Films Production CEO, Alhaji Salam Maamuni, that brought about an urgent meeting of Ghanaian movie industry decision makers who all had some friction to report in their various endeavours with Ms Nelson.
The latest incident happened on the set of her latest movie entitled "4Play Reloaded",produced by Venus Film Productions. Displeased with the absence of her co-star Jackie Appiah with whom she was to shoot a scene, Ms Nelson verbally abused anyone who was within earshot and cared to listen.
Nigerian movie makers have been notified by their Ghanaian counterparts and advised not to hire the services of Ms Nelson. Any Nigerian movie featuring Ms Nelson will be banned in Ghana. The Ghanaian authorities hope to make an example that should send out a strong signal throughout the industry and discourage similar behaviour.
The ban is due to run from October 2010 till October 2011. Calls placed to Ms Nelson and her representatives were not returned at press time.
