ECOWAS fails to arrange power transfer in Gambia – President-elect Barrow

Adama Barrow 2016.jpg

Representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have failed to convince Gambian President Yahya Jammeh to give up power following his defeat in the December 1 election, president-elect Adama Barrow said.

A statement from Barrow's office late on Friday said Jammeh's meeting with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Liberia's Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Ghana's former president John Dramani Mahama was "unproductive."

Barrow's spokesman Halifa Sallah said ECOWAS would nevertheless continue its mediation efforts.

The ECOWAS mediators also met Barrow on Friday. The president-elect was due to attend a Franco-African summit in the Malian capital Bamako, which will attempt to resolve the crisis on Saturday. Jammeh is not due to attend.

Gambia has been in a political deadlock since Barrow, a real estate mogul who was little known before he announced his candidacy, defeated Jammeh in the election.

Jammeh, who has ruled the small West African nation for 22 years with an iron fist, refuses to accept the election result and has filed a petition to challenge it at the Supreme Court.

Buhari is expected to offer Jammeh political asylum if the 51-year-old autocrat agrees to hand over power.

The talks with ECOWAS came several hours after Gambia's ruling party filed a motion with the Supreme Court to prevent Barrow from being sworn into office on January 19.

ECOWAS earlier pledged to send troops to ensure a peaceful transition of power in Gambia if Jammeh persists in his refusal to step down. (DPA)

Varsities’ Non-Academic Unions To Begin Warning Strike On Monday.

Non-academic unions in the Nigerian universities say they will on Monday embark on a five-day warning strike over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 Agreements with the unions.
The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the unions in a statement stated that the warning strike became necessary in order for government to fully implement the 2009 FGN/Non-Teaching Staff Unions Agreements it freely entered into with the unions.

JAC said that a letter of the warning strike signed by Samson Ugwoke, SSANU President, Sani Suleiman, President of NAAT and Chris Ani, NASU President had been send to the Minister of Education.

JAC said the letter was also copied to the Minister Labour and Employment, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission and President of Nigeria Labour Congress.

The statement quoted the committee as saying that “the University system is challenged by poor governance and administrative lapses which needs to be addressed holistically.

“Poor funding of our universities, shortfall in payment of staff salaries, increasing corruption in the university system should be addressed.’’

It also listed as among the problems that required attention of the government was inadequate physical infrastructure and abandoned projects which they said had reduced the capacity and output of its members.

Other areas were lack of adequate teaching and learning facilities which had reduced the productivity of members and the non-payment of Earned Allowances being product of the 2009 Agreement, among others.

Meantime, JAC has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over what it described as the “continued industrial unrest at Federal University of Technology, FUTA, Akure: the need for decisive government action concerning the university’s Vice Chancellor.”

Why I put ladies on dog chain, Lagos socialite opens up

FILE PHOTO: Pretty Mike with the girls on dog leash.

The Lagos socialite, Mike Nwogu, popularly called Pretty Mike, has opened up on why he chained some girls on a dog leash and took them to different events in Lagos recently.

The controversial Pretty Mike who owns Club Uno in Lagos said he did it to advocate for women who “have no voice.”

He said: “For me, there is a mission statement. I would give you some examples to explain the mission statement behind my action. I would not call any names but I am sure we all know about an Emir that was given a 15-year-old as a wife. To me, that is putting women on a leash. We talk about traditional rulers that marry underage women, that is putting women on the leash. We talk about boyfriends and husbands that beat their spouses and abuse them physically, emotionally and spiritually, that is putting women on a leash. I needed to get the world’s attention first to be able to pass across my mission statement. It is all about women advocacy at the end of the day. It is all about empowering the women. These women have no voice. I refer to the girls I use as super heroes and we had to do something drastic in order to be heard and get the world’s attention. Now they are talking about it.

“Yes, there are other ways I could have gone about it but there has to be a new way all the time. This is the era of social media and if I come up with a good write-up about women advocacy, nobody would pay attention to me. I would not even get up to ten ‘likes’. We are in the era of social media and if you pay close attention, something drastic has to happen to get the attention of people on social media. Most of the people that have become popular on social media did so by doing something drastic, different and unique.”

It would be recalled that his picture, which showed him with two masked girls on dog leashes, went viral on social media recently and generated a lot of public outcry.

Few days ago, he was arrested by the Lagos command of the Nigeria Police Force and made to sign an undertaking never to do such again.

He however apologised publicly thereafter saying he didn’t meant to dehumanise women but to advocate for them.

“I have done it twice and let us not make it look as if it is something I have been doing all the time. The overall reason I chose to do this was because of the mission statement behind it. It is just unfortunate how people are so quick to jump into conclusion without actually finding out what is going on. All they think is that it is an abuse, or a form of slavery or perverted thoughts,” he said.

Nollywood Actress, Ibinabo Fibresima, Opens Up on Prison Experience, Marriage in Explosive Interview

Nollywood actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima, has spoken out about her life in very frank terms in this new and explosive interview.

Ibinabo Fiberesima is a top Nollywood actress who has been in the eye of the storm following her court case over the death of Suraj Giwa, who died in a car accident.

Despite the controversies and outcry that have trailed the sad incident, the actress has managed to remain strong. Fiberesima turned a year older on Friday and to commemorate the occasion, she awarded scholarship to eight indigent students.

In this rare interview with Premium Times, the former model and mother-of-three opens up for the first time about her travails, prison experience, marriage and much more.

PT: Congratulations on your birthday. There have a few discrepancies in your age on the Internet. What’s your true age?

Ibinabo: My official age is 44 years and I was born in 1973.

PT: Why did you decide to award scholarship to eight indigent students?

Ibinabo: To celebrate my birthday this year, I decided to do something different. So my foundation, Ibinabo Care Foundation decided to award scholarships to eight students up to their university level. I will personally follow up and visit the students in school myself. My friend, Monalisa Chinda, was doing the same thing but unknown to her, she was actually paying into a ghost account for four years. I will solely fund this project and I hope to get my colleagues involved in the project as well.

PT: Aside from acting, what else do you do for a living?

Ibinabo: I don’t really act and I just returned to acting. My most recent film is 76 the movie. I also have starred in many yet-to-be released movies. I recently also set up my production outfit, DPT Media, so there is so much to do and I am thankful to God.

PT: As the past Actors Guild of Nigeria president, what are you doing to support ailing veteran actors?

Ibinabo: I am still the AGN President, there has not been an election and we are in court. So, I still remain the president. It’s hard to help the ailing veteran actors because it was easy to reach out to the immediate past president for help but with this government it’s not as easy. It’s not as though they won’t help if we reach out but it’s a longer process.

I always tell our veteran actors to learn to look after themselves. You don’t have to have money to d and that is what I keep telling people. We have so abused ourselves in this industry.

We are workaholics and our lifestyle does not help us. When you are on set, you want to drink all you can, it will mess you up. Actors need to stop for a minute and realize that they have a life like every other human being. Being a celebrity doesn’t t make us supernatural. Once you are over 40, you need to go for medical checkups. In my Facebook post, I spoke about the lumps I found in my breast three times.

PT: Did you accidentally find out?

Ibinabo: Yes I did find out accidentally. They were having a screening at my aunt’s hospital and I walked in and then I just decided to check my breasts casually. I was lucky to have not died that day because of the way the doctor screamed after discovering the lumps and suggested that they took it out immediately. If I weren’t strong I would have collapsed. I couldn’t sleep that night, so I called my dad and went back to Port Harcourt. My dad checked it and they had to get rid of the lumps immediately.

PT: Is your dad a doctor?

Ibinabo: Yes he is a surgeon and the surgery was carried out in his hospital. He was so worried and was looking at the sky while the operation lasted. He didn’t enter the theatre and the result didn’t come out until two weeks and my father couldn’t eat. That’s how afraid everybody was. So, we must look after ourselves, even though sometimes you just wake up and something is upon you.

PT: What major lessons did you learn in your stay in prison?

Ibinabo: I don’t think I learnt a lesson the second time I went to prison. From the first time I went to prison, God told me to slow down, accept life and just know that he is lord and and that’s how it has been. My life has been formed properly. In the past, when people wrote things about me in the papers, I would bother but not any longer. But it rarely happens right now because I am very careful about how I live, I’m very focused and I just give glory to God for who I am today.

PT: You poured out your heart for the first time on Facebook on Friday and you spoke about your marriage. Has your marriage truly packed up?

Ibinabo: I think people should respect what I wrote. I prayed and thank God. I think people should thank God and just let things be.

PT: So, is this a yes or no?

Ibinabo: People should just let things be and just thank God for me that is all. I am alive today and I think it’s a big deal for me that I have been through everything. Did you see the love on the Internet on my birthday? I was crying half the time. I would be reading some people’s message and I would break down. You wont even believe that the wardresses in prison called me to wish me happy birthday, I just broke down in tears. There is just so much love.

PT: Do you see yourself shooting a biopic or writing a memoir anytime soon?

Ibinabo: My story is ongoing, if I write a book it would be so lengthy so lets just keep glorying God and see where he is taking all of us.

PT: How have you been able to reinvent yourself over the years and remain relevant?

Ibinabo: My first son’s father would say, ‘Ibinabo, when you have God, you will always be relevant.’ I didn’t quite understand him but now I do. My son is 19; so over two decades later it makes sense. If you have God in you and trust God you will always be relevant in a good way.

PT: Ibinabo is said to have 5, 6 children…

Ibinabo: People just write all sorts of things on the Internet. I love children so when they claim I have 6 children I accept. I have three biological children- two boys and girl and I adopted more children.

PT: We saw a different side of you in 76 the movie, how did you get into character to play the role?

Ibinabo: Working with Rita and Ramsey you must try and be like them or better. Rita just glows; I love Rita, she’s that actress after my heart.

PT: How do you manage to look this good at 44?

Ibinabo: I don’t know how but they say it is the genes. My paternal grandmother and father’s family, the Majekodunmis are forever young so I think I got their genes.

PT: It’s not difficult to tell that you have succeeded in bringing warring Nollywood actresses together…

Ibinabo: The only reason they don’t talk with each other is because of rivalry and what people say. So I just try to teach them to love themselves and if this other person is doing well give him or her thumbs up because you will do better. There is no need to beef each other, I always implore them to love each other and thank God they listen.

PT: How did you pull through last year after the case was revisited?

Ibinabo: I wont lie I died like a million times, I always say I always try to see the positive in the worst of situations. I just prayed to God, telling him that I was getting back into prison and that he should help get me out.

PT: Were there times you wished you wished death upon yourself?

Ibinabo: The first time I went to prison, I would have committed suicide. But this second time when it was so bad because I had just had the surgery. So nobody knew about it because I try not to put my public life out there and so I was really in a bad state. Some people whom I met the first time in prison were still there. So, I just took it in m stride and I thank God I was brought out. It’s not a nice place.

PT: How about the family of the deceased?

Ibinabo: It’s the grace of God; I’m still begging them for forgiveness. I’m imploring everybody to join me in begging them and to also pray with me. I am not a bad person I’ve done it all. People have said I didn’t beg but I did everything humanly possible being and God bears me witness. I am still begging because someone dear lost his life. I keep saying how sorry I am but it comes across as though I don’t care or I’m arrogant. I would never do that. It breaks my heart when I read some things and people make me look a devil.

PT: If you could change anything what would it be?

Ibinabo: That accident would never happen, that man would be with his family today. Sometimes I break down considering the fact that I was involved in an accident and someone died. So many versions have been told and some say that I rammed into the deceased.

PT: So, what really happened on that day?

Ibinabo: I was blocked by armed robbers so I swerved to avoid running into them and an oncoming vehicle hit my car and that’s its. The two cars collided and that’s the truth of what happened.

PT: What projects do you hope to embark on in the near future?

Ibinabo: I depend on the grace of God and wherever it takes me is where I will.

Neymar's son signs for Barcelona's FCB Escola.

A few months ago, the FCB Escola launched a course for the children of players and employees at the club. Among the kids enrolled were Thiago Messi, Benjamin Suarez and Milan Pique. Now, Neymar's son David Lucca has joined that trio.

The training sessions take place near the Mini Estadi every Monday and Thursday between 17h and 18h. The kids enjoy themselves with various games and other exercises to stimulate their learning. With the ball, they do the basic. The legendary control-pass is a staple, although they've not yet moved on to the famous rondos.

Each session is closed off to the public and only the parents are allowed to attend. Gerard Pique, Antonella, Messi's partner, and Sofi, Luis Suarez's partner, haven't missed one session. Messi and Suarez have also been at seveal sessions, as has Shakira. On Thursday, Neymar was present, accompanied by some of his friends, to watch on as Lucca trained with Barcelona.
It's still too soon to know if any of the children will have careers in football. So far, Benjamin Suarez is the one who stands out the most. The Uruguayan star's son has inherited his father's strength.

ATTN: Gov Samuel Ortom,''On My Experience At Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi'';

This is a letter written to the Governor by one of her citizens following  her observation/experience at the BSU Teaching hospital. Please read.

The Gov. Samuel Ortom
The Benue people’s House
Benue State

Attention;
Benue State Commissioner of Health
Speaker, BNSHOA
Chairman, Health Committee
BNSHOA

AN OPEN LETTER TO GOV. SAMUEL ORTOM ON MY EXPERIENCE AT THE BSU TEACHING HOSPITAL, MAKURDII must first Congratulate you Sir, on the recent graduation of doctors from the Benue State University College of HealthSciences; this has not been achieved since the launch of that program12 years ago. Under your administration, 152 medical doctors graduated. This is an unprecedented event.

Dear Gov. Ortom, I will also say congratulations on the approval and release of N3.7milion for their registration with the Dental and Medical Council of Nigeria. It shows Sir, that you are a man of the book who believes in legalities. I also pray that as this fourth set of doctors graduate, they will all be absorbed in the BSU Teaching hospital-BSUTH.
As it is characteristic of teaching hospitals, they work in tandem with the university, training doctors in addition to offering medical education to their students and resident physicians.

Many teaching hospitals also serve as research institutes and I believe BSUTH should be no exception
Dear Gov. Ortom, I am writing to share my mixed experience at the teaching hospital, BSUTH ,this yuletide. I had the rare privilege of taking a loved one under emergency situations to the hospital, being on referral from a hospital in Gboko. I will spare you the near death happenstance from the poor services we received at the private hospital in Gboko, and I will focus on my interface at the BSUTH.

The emergency unit received us in their traditional way of attending to accident and emergency cases, and although I expected a quicker response, I commend the attention to details they subsequently displayed in reviewing the patient. This experience would soon form a basis for my week long desperate and unbelievable engagements with the personnel as well as the infrastructure at the teaching hospital.

Sir, my patient required a couple of OTC drugs including normal saline water, we could not access these at the hospital’s Pharmacy. She is an accident victim who was rendered immobile and required an xray before further diagnosis could be made but the xray department were not operational due to faulty equipments. This situation compelled us to, painfully, take her to the Federal Medical Centre for the xray.

These unfortunately became the trend throughout my sojourn at the BSUTH. EVERY drug, test, hospital need, surgical need and even personal need could only be bought from the pharmacies outside the hospital. The hospital seems to have totally run out of supplies and equipment. The only thing it had going was the expertise and willingness of the medical personnel.

Conservatively, my family spent close to two hundred thousand naira in the purchase of all the aforementioned from the other pharmacies outside BSUTH. These monies, including several others, could easily have been raked in by the teaching hospital and in turn may have facilitated to create a better funded institution.

On the quality of personnel service, I had the fortune of knowing some doctors who were graduates of my alma mater and would immediately call them at the dire need of medical attention requiring judgement on supply and drug options. However, this will be the misfortune of many sick people who would not have this privilege to have medical staff ponder options with them.

My surmised position of this will be the need to employ more staff at the hospital most especially nurses. There is presently a dearth of nursing care and I understand it is due to the closure of the nursing schools in the state? I particularly sympathized with an exhausted pharmacist who quickly prayed that more hands were brought on board.

In my engagement with the staff, a few ascribed the desperate situation to the nationally accepted Treasury Single Account which hampers the smooth flow of operations/increased bureaucracy in such institutions like hospitals; others said it was due to the reduction in their monthly allocations, still, some said it was purely bad management, more said no, the management had done the best they could, given the circumstances, and for many junior staff, there was a familiar ‘government worker lackadaisical attitude which manifested in very poor hygiene in the wards, rest rooms, and as seen in the well laid out brown lawns in the hospital compounds owing to long owed salaries from the outsourced companies.

Dear Governor, I believe there were more reversible failures than I witnessed. And that is why I make this appeal to you : we are surrounded by private hospitals that collect more money for far less medical care, therefore I strongly believe that BSUTH is the golden treasure of Benue state health care. It saves lives, provides jobs and more importantly hones our future doctors. It belongs to all, the poor and the rich. We should jealously grow it for what it is worth.
Sir, BSUTH deserves all the attention you can give.

Thanks for your time.

Long Live Gov Samuel OrtomLong live BSUTHLong live Benue State
Sincerely yours,
Benue Indigene

Maitama Sule, Paul Unongo, others denied access to IDP camp in Maiduguri

Members of the Northern Elders Forum, led by Maitama Sule and Paul Unongo, were on Friday stopped by security at the gate of an IDP camp, as they tried to make donations.

The elders arrived Maiduguri the Borno State capital and were received by the governor, Kashim Shettima.

The NEF members said they were in Maiduguri to commiserate with the people and government of Borno on their experiences with Boko Haram, and to congratulate the governor on his work as chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum.

They called for a more united northern Nigeria, and commended the Nigerian military for helping the state to chase out Boko Haram from its Sambisa forest stronghold.

Mr. Shettima expressed concern that the north may continue to suffer crises like Boko Haram and communal clashes in Kaduna and Benue states should its present leaders fail to educate its large youth population.

At the end of the courtesy visit, Mr. Shettima directed that the visitors be given logistics and security to visit the Shehu’s palace and some of IDP camps that were part of their itinerary.

But they were stopped at the Dalori-1 IDP camp by soldiers as they made efforts to access the facility to deliver some 100 bags of rice they brought along.

After nearly 30 minutes of explanations and phone calls, the elders left to catch their flights.
The bags of rice were not delivered at the camps. And they were also not allowed to meet the IDPs.

The soldiers stood their ground, despite explanations by protocol and escort policemen accompanying the NEF members.

A protocol officer told PREMIUM TIMES that the soldiers said they were not adequately notified of the visit to the camp.

“They said only the Garrison Commander could make them to open the gate of the camp for the elderly state statesmen. And they said they had not been given such orders,” said one of the protocol officers who would not want his name mentioned.

One of the NEF members, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, told journalists “As part of our visit, we brought 100 bags of rice as our token contribution to our brothers and sisters in Borno state. This is not money from any government; this is our own personal contribution as members of the northern elders’ forum.

“It is unfortunate there was a breakdown of communication. The camp management didn’t know of our arrival. But we are not disappointed. We are coming back again. We will find a good way of handing over these bags of rice so that it gets to the people that it is intended for.”

He said they could have chosen another camp to make the presentation, but that they had no time.

Those who visited Muktar Muhamma, Yahaya Kwande, Muhammed Bello Kirfi, Ango Abdullahi, Paul Tarfa, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Bashir Sodangi, among others.
