Private Jet Operated By Vistajet Robbed By Lagos Airport Bandits While Taxiing On The Runway

The security apparatus at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos was on Tuesday once again called to question as a private jet owned by Vistajet was attacked on the runway of the airport.Information gathered by SaharaReporters revealed that the jet with the registration number 9H-VFA operated by EAN on December 12 2017 was attacked on the runway18R of the airport by unknown bandits when taxiing to the hangar of  Evergreen Apple Nigeria (EAN) Ltd. The jet was arriving from Istanbul between 2110-2130hrs after landing in Lagos.

A source close to EAN confided in our correspondent that the pilot of the jet Captain Emma Heering discovered that the rear door of the aircraft was opened while taxiing to the hangar of EAN.

After an investigation, it was discovered that a big black bag belonging to the air hostess, Francesca Louis was missing from the jet.The source told our correspondent that it was not the first time such an incident would be happening at the airport.

Earlier in the year, some bandits allegedly opened the door of a small aircraft from the rear that was taxiing on the runway and escaped with some belongings of some of the occupants.

The investigation further revealed that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) responsible for airport security has only one operational vehicle escorting aircraft that lands on the runway, but at times, there might not be any operational vehicle on the ground to monitor aircraft that is taxiing to the apron for arriving aircrafts.

It was reported that this particular jet with call sign VT584 was not escorted by any operational vehicle as at the time of the incident due to lack of any operational vehicles at the airside of the airport, a situation, which made the criminal act to be perpetrated with ease on the said day.

An airline source speaking anonymously with SaharaReporters said: “What actually happened was that when the aircraft was taxiing to the hangar of EAN, the cabin crew discovered that the rear door was opened. So, when the jet taxied to the hangar, it was discovered that one big black bag belonging to their air hostesses was missing. An alarm was raised, but no one could trace the bandit who had forced the door open while taxiing.Lagos Airport

“It is bad that this is happening in an airport, which was recently certified by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has scaling security and safety hurdle. The government should look at the incident and several others that have been happening in the airside because this is not the first time such a thing would be happening at the airport and several others across the country.”

Besides, a similar incident had occurred on Med-View Airline when a stowaway passenger scaled the fence of the airport to enter the wheel well of the Boeing 777 aircraft of the airline to London. The stowaway told security agencies that he had scaled the fence of the airport and spent days waiting to board the aircraft ostensibly with the aid of unscrupulous airport officials.

The stowaway could not, however, disembark from the plane in London and had to be brought back to Lagos before he was discovered by one of the security personnel at the airport.

Till date, FAAN could not explain how the stowaway successfully gained entrance into the aircraft.

It would be recalled that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos was certified in September this year by Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria (NCAA) after 38 years of opening the airport.

The safety and security certification awarded the airport by NCAA had however received some scepticisms from stakeholders and security experts in the sector.

Security analysts have repeatedly stated that the airport may not have met all the safety requirements to ensure its certification especially in the area of insurance cover and security.

Experts had said that for any airport to be certified, according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) minimal standard, such an airport must have adequate maintenance and security programmes in place.

The security expert insisted that airport certification was not about the terminal building, but the facilities installed at such airport, including navigational aids provided by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

With the Tuesday incident, the certification of the airport by NCAA has further raised questions about its authenticity

Muslim Law Student, Amasa Firdaus, Denied Being Called To Bar Over Hijab Speaks

Amasa Firdaus, the Nigerian Law School graduate denied access to the venue of the call to the bar ceremony earlier this week says her demand remains the need to grant approval for the use of hijab among Muslim law graduates.

The graduate of the University of Ilorin, had been denied access to the ceremony after insisting on wearing hijab during the ceremony. Amasa was specifically refused entry into the hall for insisting to wear the wig on top of her hijab – a headscarf.

Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday, December 16, Amasa maintained that she remained resolute in her convictions to set a precedent for Hijab-wearing Muslims during the ceremony.

“My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the call to bar (ceremony).”

When asked whether she was aware of rules and regulations that guide against the use of Hijab at the ceremony, she said there was none, stressing that it was merely based on conventions.

“There is nothing like that (laws preventing the use of Hijab). When you ask them too, they tell you it is convention; that that is how it is done and it has to remain like that,” she said.

Asked what motivated her to take the decision, she explained that she wanted to change the narrative and give Muslim sisters the rights to express their constitutional rights as enshrined in the constitution.

“I knew that was what was going to happen,” she said of the consequences of her decision. She, however, said she remained resolute in her convictions to speak for the recognition of rights of female Muslim law graduates.

She explained further that the Law School has not said anything on the case, adding that the support from the Muslim community has been impressive. “My demand is that Hijab should be approved,” she affirmed.

The OLF, she said was specially designed to turn the five divisions of Lagos into a tourist destination for 8 days non-stop showcasing not less than 40 concerts all together across the city of Lagos while developing the local economy of these areas thereby making it self-sustaining during the festive period and after.

‘What I did to enlarge my bum’ – Seyi Shay

Sultry Nigerian singer, Seyi Shay, broke the Internet when a picture of her dressed in a transparent outfit surfaced on the web.  It was obvious the singer wasn’t wearing panties under the dress. The picture caused so much ruckus even amongst fellow celebs who were aghast that the singer could wear such outfit in public.

But it is so apparent that Seyi doesn’t care whose ox is gored as she told Saturday Beats recently she was so proud and comfortable wearing the outfit.

“I wore that dress in New York. I dare not wear such in Nigeria. New York is one of the most fashion inclined cities in the world. The dress was made by Sokayna who is a crème de la crème designer in the world. He is Senegalese but he is doing very well for himself. Recently, Rihanna, Madonna and even Nicki Minaj, wore the same jacket I got from him. They all shop from him so it was an honour and a privilege to wear his piece.

Why would I say no to such an offer? Even if the dress were a string, I would have still worn it. Also, if I had worn anything underneath the dress, it would have spoilt the design, it was not designed for anything to be worn underneath it,” she said.

Apart from the fact that she has become more daring with her sense of style, Saturday Beats wondered aloud if the singer did cosmetic surgery as her backside, which used to be very flat has added some massive flesh.

To that, the singer admitted that having a bigger backside was one of the good things that happened to her this year. She further revealed that she almost went for a surgery to increase her boobs but later changed her mind. The songstress said, “I did not get this big bum through injections or surgery.

If I did not do surgery on my boobs, is it my backside I would then operate on? Someone advised me to be doing squats. Till now, I spend most of my time in the gym. Having big buttocks was one of the good things that happened to me this year. I do 100 squats in the morning, in the afternoon I do 50 and then at night, I do another 100. It hurts a lot but it is worth it; I would not lie about that, the pain is worth it.

“I have been getting a lot of compliments since my backside added. I wanted to do a boob job but I changed my mind and the reason is that I realised that I could fit into almost anything especially sample sizes from designers. One of the things that Sokayna complimented me for when I was in New York was my body. He said that his clothes were not specifically made for African bodies but I have an extraordinary body and I would be ‘finished’ if I did a boob job. Everything fits, so I am happy with what God gave me.”

While chatting with Saturday Beats, Sheyi described this year as a rough one while thanking God for miracles.

“I am already excited about next year because, in March, I am going to release my EP. This 2017 has been a bit rough for me but it has been full of miracles. The highest point for me this year, professionally, has to be when I was featured on the cover of New York Times, which is a global newspaper.

Also, one of my favourite songs, Yolo Yolo, was released this year. This year was when I met my new manager, Kamal Ajiboye, and we would work together for a very long time, by God’s grace,” she said.

Nigerian man sentenced to 18 years in prison for duping over 40 Vietnamese women

A Southern Vietnam court has sentenced a Nigerian to 18 years in prison over a fake customs enforcement scam, state media reported on Friday.

A local media reported that Michael Ikechukwu Leonard, 45, was convicted on Thursday of “deceiving others to steal their assets” in a scam which targeted wealthy Vietnamese women.

The court in Can Tho city determined that Leonard gained his victims’ trust on messaging apps using various alter egos, including a U.S. army officer.

The convict was said to have promised to send his victims valuable presents, including laptops and jewellery from the U.S.

Local accomplices, Huynh Ha Binh, Huynh Ha Uyen and Nguyen Tran Quynh Nhi, would then contact the women claiming to be customs agents and demand fees or fines for the non-existent shipments.

They successfully conned a woman in Can Tho out of 28,500 dollars, leading to their arrest.

It is unclear how many women were duped by the gang in total.

Leonard’s accomplices received sentences ranging from 12 to 15 years.

‘How alleged killer wife Maryam’s mum, brother, househelp tried to hide evidence’ – Police

The Nigerian Police Force, yesterday, alleged before an Abuja High Court at Jabi that family members of Maryam Sanda, wife of murdered son of erstwhile Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bilyamin Bello, attempted to hide evidence against her.

Police, in an amended two-count charge it filed before the court, alleged that Maryam’s mother, Maimuna Aliyu and her brother, Aliyu Sanda, upon realizing that an offence of culpable homicide was committed, “did cause evidence of the offence to disappear”.

It said the duo, with the help of one Sadiya Aminu, carefully cleaned the blood from the scene of the crime with the intention of screening the 1st defendant, Maryam from legal punishment.

According to the prosecution, the three persons involved in the scrubbing-off of murdered Bilyamin’s blood, by their action, committed an offence punishable under section 167 of the Penal Code Law. Consequently, Police re-arraigned Maryam alongside her mother, brother and Aminu, before trial Justice Yusuf Halilu yesterday.

Whereas Maryam was in the count-one of the charge marked CR/15/17, which Police filed pursuant to section 109(d) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, was accused of stabbing her husband to death with a broken bottle on November 19 at their Abuja residence. The three others were in count-two, charged with causing evidence of the crime to disappear. The prosecution told the court that Bilyamin died as a result of several stabs on his chest and neck.

Police maintained that the defendant attacked her husband with the knowledge that her act was likely to cause his death. Meanwhile, all the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge, even as they begged the court through their lead counsel, Mr. J.B. Daudu, SAN, to release them on bail pending the determination of the case against them.

While Daudu, SAN, stressed that allegation against Maryam’s family members was a bailable one, he pleaded the court to consider the well-being of the 1st defendant’s six-month-old baby and grant her bail pending the trial. Besides, the defence lawyer tendered a medical certificate he said showed that Maryam was suffering from a serious ailment.

He told the court that all the defendants were anxious for the trial to commence so that they could establish their innocence. However, in his ruling, Justice Halilu declined to release the alleged ‘killer wife’ on bail. The Judge ordered that she should remain in Suleja prison until February 5, 2018, when a full-blown hearing was scheduled to begin in the case.

Justice Halilu held that the defence lawyer failed to place sufficient material before the court to show that the undisclosed ailment the 1st defendant was suffering from could not be treated in prison. Nevertheless, the court granted bail to the three other defendants, saying they must, however, produce two sureties each. The court held that the sureties must show evidence that they are resident within the Abuja city center, as well as deposit title deed of their landed properties.

Besides, the defendants were asked to surrender all their travelling documents to the court. It will be recalled that the court had on November 24, remanded Maryam in prison after she was arraigned on a two-count charge of culpable homicide punishable by death under section 221 of the Penal Code law.

I don’t run family government in Imo – Okorocha

The governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has dismissed allegations by some elites in the state that he runs a family government.

According to him, “those behind the allegation have missed the point.”

Governor Okorocha stated this on Friday, when more than five thousand members of the Rochas Mandate Movement held solidarity rally to honour him in Owerri.

He said: “more than 4,000 children had gone to University through Rochas Foundation and more than 15,000 of such children are also in the various colleges of the Foundation”.

“When some of them graduate, they chose to be with me and I cannot afford to say no to them and if any of such children becomes anything under me they would say he or she is a member of Rochas Family”

He stressed that his ambition in life was to see people grow through him; adding that “those who never offered the people of the state leadership when they held sway but only shared the people’s resources would never come back to power in the state”.

“Uche Nwosu (his son in-law) who is from Nkwerre Local Government Area and Prince Eze Madumere, from Mbaitoli LGA are all counted today members of my family because they have grown to prominence but when they took those steps of faith no one counted them as members of my family”.

The governor noted that he has done the state and her people proud with his monumental achievements.

The Imo governor also reiterated that he would neither run for Senate nor for president in 2019, but would be keen in who succeeds him and who can sustain the tempo of the achievements recorded by his administration.

“The people I see here are people who are committed. People that are following me not because of what they could gain from me, but because of what we have done for the world. As it stands, come 2019, I’m contesting for nothing. But in my heart, I have searched out and resolved that one man has good thoughts about Nigeria in his heart. Secondly, the possibility of leadership will easily get to the Igbos after him. That man is President Muhammadu Buhari”.

“My coming as a leader in Imo State was by your efforts. No big political bigwig supported me and in my stride, I have brought sitting Heads of states of other countries to Imo State,” he added.

Kanu, Diouf in charity match for Boko Haram victims

Nigeria’s former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu led a team of African all-stars in a charity football match on Thursday, to raise money for people displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency and highlight their plight.

Kanu, Senegal’s El-HadjiDiouf, Fabian McCarthy of South Africa and CyrilleMubiala from the Democratic Republic of Congo were in a side that took on Nigeria Premier League side Kano Pillars at Kano’s SaniAbacha stadium.

The home side won 2-1 in front of a 16,000-strong crowd.

Ticket sales from the “Match for IDPs” (internally displaced persons) will be combined with money from a charity dinner to support those made homeless by the eight-year conflict.

The Islamist insurgency began in 2009 and has since killed at least 20,000 people and made more than 2.6 million homeless.

Diouf told reporters after the match his aim by playing was “to raise awareness of the dire need of the IDPs and raise funds to support them”.

“Whatever money is raised here will be used to support the IDPs,” added the former Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers forward.

Boko Haram has been pushed out of captured towns and villages in the northeast but the military counter-insurgency has laid bare the extent of the devastation wrought on the remote region.

Some 1.8 million IDPs in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states still live either in sprawling, unsanitary camps or with family members. Others have fled as refugees to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

With farmers killed and land blighted by conflict, food shortages have been widespread, forcing IDPs to rely on handouts from international aid agencies, who have had to scale back operations because of a lack of funding.

IDPs remain vulnerable to continued Boko Haram attacks, particularly from suicide bombers, while women and young girls have been exposed to sexual abuse in the camps, including from security personnel and officials.

Match organiser Abi Goodman said, “We want to use football to communicate with the people about what is going on in the IDP camps.

“What we are doing is a drop in the ocean as the IDP needs are so huge.

“But we want to use this as a rallying point for the government, wealthy individuals and Nigerians living abroad to support the IDPs,” she added.

Rivers community threatens to sue apc for ‘insulting’ Ateke Tom

Council of Chiefs from Koniju Town in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State has threatened to drag the All Progressives Congress in the state to court for allegedly insulting their monarch, His Royal Majesty, King Ateke Tom.

The chiefs demanded an apology from the state APC and its agents for purportedly denigrating and defaming the character of their monarch, who is a former Niger Delta agitator.

Chairman of the town’s Council of Chiefs, Chief Chris Opuayaraya, explained that his colleagues would allow the APC a reasonable length of time to apologise to the people of Okrika for insulting their traditional ruler.

Opuayaraya claimed that a former deputy governorship candidate in the state, who led a recent pro-SARS protest in Port Harcourt, allowed youths to carry banners with an inscription; ‘Wike is making Criminals King’.

He explained that it was painful to observe that the banner where such statement was written had the photographs of King Ateke Tom and the state governor.

Opuayaraua warned that they would seek redress in court should the party fail to apologise and retract such statement without delay.

“As if that was not enough, the defeated deputy governorship candidate of APC in the 2015 election in Rivers State, Hon. Asita O. Asita’s speech was also heard on radio and corroborated with inscription on the flex banner.

“We, the Chiefs, elders and people of Okochiri Kingdom and indeed the entire Wakirike ethnic nationality wholly condemn in strongest terms the damaging, malicious, provocative and insulting inscription targeted to maligning and denting the hard-earned reputation of our monarch.

“We view the act as sacrilegious, inciting and intended to demean not only the image of our well respected traditional stool and its occupant, but also a great disrespect and disservice to the people of Okochiri Kingdom, who after a thorough selection, picked His Royal Majesty to ascend this exalted ancient throne,” he stated.

The Council of Chiefs, however, cautioned that the people would not allow any political party, community or organization to humiliate them or denigrate their traditional stool.

Reacting, a member of the APC Leadership Caucus in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr. Darlington Nwauju, said that though the chiefs were free to go to court to seek redress, they would not be able to prove that King Ateke Tom was being referred to as a criminal.

Nwauju explained that the call by the Council of Chiefs for an apology was misplaced, saying, “The flex banners used that day never mentioned the name of Ateke Tom. It was an open ended stated statement. We are aware that there are several chiefs and kings in the state.

“Moereover, they cannot prove it in court that the banner referred to Ateke Tom. I hope they will not resort to self-help.”

Odi massacre: Anyone with tribal marks on their chest was slaughtered, corpses littered everywhere –Bolou, former Bayelsa commissioner

Over 18 years ago, precisely on November 20, 1999, the Nigerian military, acting on the orders of then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, invaded Odi, a predominantly Ijaw community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, and wreaked monumental havoc on the community.

The attack, which many observers have described as a pogrom, came at a time when there was conflict in the oil-rich Niger Delta region over widespread agitations for oil resources control and environmental protection.

Prior to the incident, there were reports that some armed bandits murdered 12 police officers close to Odi. Unconfirmed reports also said military personnel deployed in the community were ambushed close to the town, which increased tension in the area. The soldiers broke through the ambush and exchanged gunfire with the armed bandits in the town, which further escalated the tension.

In retaliation, the military, allegedly on the orders of Obasanjo, invaded the town and leveled the community. In the course of the invasion, many people were killed while most of the houses in the community were set ablaze.

While the Federal Government put the casualty figure at 43, some reports said about 2,500 civilians were killed.

The matter became a matter of litigation and N37.6bn damages was awarded in favour of the community against the government by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. In 2014, the Federal Government reached an agreement with the community and N15bn was eventually paid. That also created a conflict in the community, as the chairman of the negotiation committee was kidnapped and held in captivity for some days.

In this interview with SIMON UTEBOR, an indigene of Odi, Mr. Tari Bolou, a two-time commissioner in the state and council chairman during the massacre in 1999, recounts their ordeal during the period

What really comes to your mind when you remember the Odi massacre?

My mind always bleeds whenever I remember. The massacre that took place in Odi, a predominantly Ijaw community community, is better imagined than remembered. On that day in 1999, it appeared that the entire military, the entire security forces of this country came to unleash mayhem on the community. They (military) took over the entire area from Mbiama down to Patani. There was a total lockdown. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was the President of the country then. To shed more light on that incident, I wish to state here that Odi people never converged anywhere and planned to kill policemen, no, it was not so. We are a peace-loving people; we are travellers and we are enlightened.  The cause of the problem actually started with one Mr. Jokotola, a police area commander, said to have come from Abeokuta, the same local government as our former president (Obasanjo).

The then area commander destroyed a place called ‘Black Market’ in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. During the destruction of the market, he allegedly killed some persons. As a result of that, so many people escaped and some of the escapees went to Odi.  On a particular day, he said he was going to visit Odi. When he drove to Kaiama, we learnt that the Divisional Police Officer in Kaiama told him not to go to Odi and that there were some rough boys there. But he (Jokotola) refused to heed to the DPO’s advice. The area commander, on getting to the Mobile Police Command at Kaiama, was advised by the MOPOL commander, as we learnt, not to go to Odi and that he would not go with him. But he refused and went to Odi. When he got to the College Junction in Odi, those boys that ran from him in Yenagoa after killing their colleagues were there. They had laid an ambush for him. They caught him. One of the hoodlums, simply called Ken, retorted, ‘This is the Jokotola that made me to be alone in this world.  We were six in my family, but today, I am the only existing child of my mother. Since I have seen you today, I will kill you and kill myself. You will kill me or I will kill you.’

The DPO at Kaiama was an Odoni man, our brother. He had a stroke and his health had deteriorated. When the police were torturing some hoodlums arrested earlier, the DPO collapsed and died.  They (hoodlums) said, ‘If our brother has died, then all of you will die.’ So, they killed them (Jokotola and a few policemen). Thereafter, Obasanjo decided to avenge the death of his kinsman. He sent the military to level Odi, a small community.

How small is Odi?

Well, Odi is a growing community. Day in and day out, our daughters are giving birth, so let me say both home and abroad and everywhere, we should be about 200,000 persons.

Where were you on that fateful day?

During that incident, I was the Vice Chairman-elect of the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. I had come to Yenagoa to see my family. The government unleashed military terror on my people. They killed both young and the old, raped our mothers and daughters, looted property worth billions of Naira and burnt down all the buildings. That was the peak of man’s inhumanity to man. It was a complete genocide.  They were shooting and shelling from all corners – Kaiama bridgehead, Odi junction, Patani. The innocent people that were travelling were caught in the sporadic shooting. They killed all of them.

The Senate visited then, what was their response to the incident?

When our brother, the late Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, of blessed memory, a former Senate President, visited, there was no road to pass through to the community. Okadigbo begged them (military) to open the road before he could go into the Odi community. When he and his team including former Senate President David Mark got there, they saw a lot of decomposing corpses litter the entire area. I could remember, David Mark, wept. I saw him weeping as a child because of the destruction and the level of killings that took place. Okadigbo himself saw that the soldiers were not friendly. When Okadigbo wanted to move to the market square area, the soldiers asked him not to go further. The security forces were furious, pulling their triggers to shoot on sight. So, Okadigbo urged those that came with him to leave and that he would join them later. The soldiers, led by one Colonel Agbabiaka, even seized the media vehicles that accompanied Okadigbo. The soldiers were so ferocious that they did not allow any of the residents to leave Odi. They did not allow anybody to go into Odi as well. It was that bad.

How many days did the military occupation last in Odi?

Days? I am saying that they stayed there for months and used about three weeks to burn down all the buildings. Almost all the security forces were stationed in Odi, a small community!

We felt bad that Obasanjo who we all voted for at that time allegedly carried out such a pogrom in our community. On March 15th, 2001, when Obasanjo came, I was the one that delivered the keynote address. At that time, I was the Executive Chairman of the local government.

What was contained in your keynote address?

As the chairman of LGA that comprised Odi, I requested for a compensation of N25bn as of then. When Obasanjo visited, he never gave us any good answer. At last, he (Obasanjo) said, ‘Let this not repeat itself. If it repeats itself, we will come by sea, by road, by air and I will not be there to control my boys. However, if Prof. Isoun rebuilds his house, I will come and spend my weekend in Odi.’

During Obasanjo’s visit, it was only former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and myself that were allowed to address the people. Up until today, Odi is no longer the same. We are just mere remnants. But no matter what, Odi’s name will never be removed from the map of this state, and from the map of Nigeria as a few of us are still in existence.

Do you have any statistics on the number of people that were killed during the massacre?

A lot of people died. Even the King of Odi, who was my father’s immediate elder brother, was killed during the invasion. The king was killed when he told the military that the building they were about to burn was his younger brother’s own. When he appealed to them not to burn the building, the soldiers pushed him down and shot him in his leg and he died eventually. With that and many other incidents, you could see that those trigger-happy soldiers did not respect the traditional authority; they shot and killed the king. They killed aged people and countless young people.

Apart from killing our people, many were severely tortured. They handled our people with ‘diamond hands’. I use diamond because it is the strongest substance in this world and we were handled like that. That sad event reminds me of the fate of the minorities in this country – they actually do not have people to save them in case of a situation like the Odi massacre.

But what was the actual cause of the disagreements between the Odi people and the security personnel?

To be candid, we did not have any disagreement with the security forces. In the Odi community, everybody goes about their normal business. We have the Federal Government College; we have some government parastatals such as the Bioresource Centre. Hausa people are there; Fulani people and other tribes are there. It is a peaceful community and everybody is peaceful.

I must say in all honesty that we did not have any disagreement with any military or police personnel. For the group of the boys that committed the havoc against the police, instead of the security personnel to look for the culprits, they came and destroyed the whole community. How many times have the police personnel been killed in Lagos? Have they killed the people living in the state? What about in the North? But our case was treated in a different fashion. It is not fair.

The report then was that the people killed about 12 policemen and that was why the government of the day was furious and decided to punish them?

No. It is not true. That is what I am saying: If they kill policemen in Lagos, does it mean that the whole of Lagos State will come together, hold a meeting to kill? No, there were people who did it. That is why we have the police, that’s why we have the DSS, that’s why we have the military intelligence, the military police and others. What they ought to have done was to look for the culprits and punish them. But that invasion and massacre was a punishment to everybody.

In Odi,  as a community, we don’t go anywhere to hold meetings to kill people; the strangers that were in Odi caused that havoc. Let me reiterate here that an incident happened. It sure happened. The area commander, Jokotola, as I said earlier, killed some persons in the Black Market in Yenagoa. The escapees, most of whom were not from Odi, caused the havoc. Even the leader of the hoodlums, Ken, wasn’t from Odi.

Would you blame the military for that action especially when some policemen were killed and their men ambushed?

Yes, I blame the military totally. The invasion and massacre were uncalled for. That is why I said they should have deployed military intelligence to fish out the perpetrators instead of killing the entire community. Even the Biafrans that fought with Nigeria were not treated the way they treated Odi people.

We learnt that many buildings were set ablaze excluding banks, the Anglican Church and schools. Is that assumption correct?

Yes, it is correct. The First Bank in the community was spared. The military rather guarded the bank. The Anglican Church was not torched but the military torched the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation halls. Schools were also left out. Apart from those buildings, every other building was reduced to the rubble. The buildings destroyed were numerous.

When Obasanjo came, can you recollect the request you placed before him?

Yes, I asked Obasanjo during my address that he should build 500 one-bedroomed apartments; 500 two- bedroomed apartments; 500 three- bedroomed apartments and 1,000  storey buildings and duplexes. That was the request I made as the council boss then.

If all the buildings in the community were razed as you claimed, how were the people able to rebuild them?

At that point, the state government led by Alamieyeseigha put up some emergency buildings to accommodate those that remained after the pogrom. He hurriedly constructed some buildings and makeshift houses where our people relocated to in the interim.

Would you know the number of casualties in the Odi massacre?

There were varied figures of casualties. The government said only 43 people died including eight soldiers, but some people said 2,500 civilians were killed.

Whose report do you believe?

Both accounts are not correct. They killed many people, much more than the estimation. As I said, they even killed a lot of people at the Odi junction. It was that bad that anybody found to have tribal marks on his chest was slaughtered. You will recollect that they occupied our community for months. You can imagine the number of people they could have killed. The figures being bandied are far from the truth. It was a widespread massacre.

So the people could not run away from the soldiers?

They could not leave the place in time. The soldiers took it as a duty to kill people every morning and night. The orgy of killings spread to the East-West Road, too. It was difficult to run because the soldiers were everywhere. They took over everywhere including the forest. That was why many people were killed. It became worse when the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Victor Malu, directed the soldiers to kill all of us.

Would you say it is wicked or mischievous to say only 43 people died as claimed by the government?

Yes. I tell you, the soldiers were there for months, wreaking havoc on our people. It was not a joke. Many of our people were killed.

Are you saying there was no category of persons that were spared from killing by the soldiers?

There was no category that was spared. If they could kill a 93-year-old person, who would they spare? I tell you, they killed all categories of people. Only children were spared somehow.

It was learnt in some quarters that about 5,000 troops were deployed in the area on that day. Do you think the figure is correct or otherwise?

As far as I know, the troops I saw from Mbiama down to Patani were more than 15,000. I am saying that a large number of security departments of the whole country were here in Odi. They came with a mission to eliminate the community and they did just that. The troops were much more than 5,000 from what I saw.

After the invasion, how many corpses were you people able to count?

The corpses were uncountable. My first job as Chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA was to bury people.  At that time, no one could sleep in Odi because of pollution from dead bodies. We had to organise series of prayers and fasting to cleanse the land. All the roads, every corner of the community were littered with corpses. It was an episode that cannot be forgotten for a very long time. It will remain evergreen in our memories as far as you are a son or daughter of Odi community.

Were there people who never saw family members till date?

Yes, a lot of people, a lot of them.

The court ordered that that N37.6bn should go to the community as compensation. But the Federal Government has so far paid N15bn? What is the true situation?

Well, the court ordered that N37.6bn should be paid to our people. During the reign of our kinsman, former President Goodluck Jonathan, the government paid N15bn. Out of the N15bn, the lawyers took N6bn and the community shared N9bn. Up until now, the remaining amount has not been paid. The payment of that money actually brought some rift in the community such that the chairman of the settlement committee was kidnapped.

What caused the conflict after the payment?

As regards the payment, there were some clauses that those (Odi indigenes) that were not staying at Odi during that time were to be given N300,000 each while those residing in Odi were paid N500,000. I think the disparity did not go down well with some persons. Also, during the settlement, owners of some buildings, like storey-buildings were paid N5m; block buildings, N3m and owners of bungalows were paid N1m, among others.

Was any of your buildings destroyed?

My father’s building was destroyed.

How much did they pay?

I think N1m. It was a bungalow.

Since the N15bn was paid, what has it been used for?

The committee that was handling the payment wasn’t strong enough to face the youth. At a point, some youths wanted the entire money to be shared. The committee members did not agree that the total money should be shared. They wanted some fraction to be left for development of the community but the youth refused. The youth even stoned some committee members. Due to that, the people agreed that the money should be divided compound by compound. That was how they divided the money but I know the majority benefited and most of them managed to build small houses. We give kudos to Jonathan. We are indeed very grateful to him.

You are invariably saying that the money was used for the betterment of the community?

Yes, when you are paid, if you make use of your money, it’s for your own credit. They paid cash and people used it for their own development.

But could you say that the N15bn was judiciously used or did some people help themselves with it?

I won’t make any comment on that. Let it be known that out of the N15bn, N6bn went to the lawyers and the community shared N9bn. They said they did the case out of their pockets and that the community didn’t pay a dime during the court proceedings. They (lawyers) contended that they took the bull by the horn, went to court and won the compensation for the community hence they collected N6 bn.

How many lawyers were involved?

I can’t remember the number of lawyers. It was a group of people that connected them.

We learnt that the house built by David Mark was destroyed…

The house built by Senator David Mark for his in-laws was destroyed. Being our in-law, there was a time he lost his father-in-law and he put up a building, a five bedroomed bungalow. That building was also destroyed by soldiers during the invasion.

Since the money has been paid to Odi, do you think the Odi people have forgiven the Federal Government?

Yes, to some extent. We would have loved it if the remaining part had been paid. If that is done, of course, we will forgive the Federal Government completely.

Have you people forgiven Obasanjo or you feel no amount of settlement can make up for the loss of lives?

Well, it is said that to err is human and to forgive is divine. We have forgiven him, it’s a human error. If we have not forgiven, maybe by now, this community would have started a tribal war against the Yoruba. But we didn’t do that. We have forgiven him.  It is a lesson the incident has taught us but I pray that no person will pursue such an agenda in this country again. Whoever that has done wrong, look for that person and punish the person, not the generality of the people. It’s very uncalled for and this cannot happen in advanced countries.

Robbery saga: Burna Boy submits self to Police

NIGERIAN dancehall star, Damini Ogulu popularly known as ‘Burna Boy’, on Friday submitted himself to the Lagos State Police Command to state his side of the story on his alleged involvement in a robbery attack on a fellow artiste, Mr. 2kay.

He was subsequently arrested, interrogated and detained and is expected to be charged to court on Monday alongside four members of the gang earlier arrested.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, after the interrogation, said the State Police Command has zero tolerance for all forms of crime and would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable in any criminal offence perpetrated in the state.

“There would be no sacred cows. This Command is poised to ensure that every resident can feel safe wherever they are and carry out their businesses without fear or favour. Anyone therefore found to be involved in this case would be made to face the law to clear his or her name or face prosecution,” Imohimi said.

The pop musician, who was declared wanted by the Lagos Police Command in connection with the robbery attack on another popular musician, Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites early last month, reported to the Command headquarters in Ikeja at about 5pm.

The gang leader of the suspected robbers, Tunmise Omotore, had confessed on how they disguised as room service to rob Mr. 2kay at Eko Hotel and Suites on the instruction of Burba Boy’s Road Manager, Joel Kantiock.

PENGASSAN begins strike Monday as peace parley ends in stalemate

The Petroleum  and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) is set to embark on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, following a stalemate in the peace meeting the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Emmanuel Kachikwu, brokered between the union and Neconde Energy Limited.

PENGASSAN and Neconde have been embroiled in crisis over allegation of anti-worker practices.

PENGASSAN, the umbrella body of senior workers in the oil and gas sector, alleged that the management of Neconde wrongly terminated the employment of some of its workers, threatening to go on strike if the sacked workers were not recalled within 72 hours.

The matter caused Kachikwu to initiate a meeting between the two warring bodies in Abuja during the week, but the meeting ended in a deadlock.

In a release signed by PENGASSAN Public Relation Office, Fortune Obi, and made available to The Nation yesterday, PENGASSAN said it would embark on industrial action on Monday.

Obi said: “Following the failure of the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, to settle the rift between this body (PENGASSAN) and Neconde, the management of PENGASSAN has agreed to start the strike on Monday night (December 18th, 2017).

“Prior to the strike, PENGASSAN will hold an emergency Central Working  Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday morning, which will be followed with announcement of strike on the night of Monday.’’

The union said it has put its workers across the country on standby for the strike, adding that nothing whatsoever would stop the body from starting the strike by midnight on Monday.

PENGASSAN’s Lagos Zonal Chairman, Abel Agarin, had in a communiqué said it would not tolerate any act of victimization against any of its members.

He said the union’s position was that the termination of employment of some workers by Neconde was unlawful, as it was not in line with equity, good conscience and industrial relations best practices and extant labour laws.
