FG distributes relief materials to IDPs in Nasarawa

The Federal Government on Friday distributed relief materials worth three million naira to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nasarawa State.
At the distribution exercise in Lafia, the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, Hajiya Sadiya Faruck, said the gesture was to reduce the hardship of the IDPs.

The commissioner, who was represented on the occasion by the Assistant Director, Field Operations, Bello Mohammed, called for proper utilisation of the items.

She said the IDPs were indigenes of Taraba State, who were displaced as a result of the sectional crisis that had affected the state since 2013.

“The gesture is the Federal Government’s response to mitigate the suffering of the IDPs. The government is giving similar support to IDPs in all the states affected by the crisis,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the commissioner as saying at the event.

Faruck listed the items distributed to include grains, cloths, shoes, drugs and educational materials.

The state Governor, Umaru Al-Makura, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the support.

Al- Makura, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mohammed Abdullahi, assured that the state government would ensure judicious utilisation of the items.

Boko Haram affiliate planning deadly attacks – FG

The Federal Government on Friday raised the alarm that a Boko Haram affiliate, Muslim Brotherhood, is planning massive attacks on banks, arms depots and prisons.

It said the group through its cell in Kogi State was trying to acquire bomb-making chemicals and high-calibre weapons to perpetrate acts of terror.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the alert followed intelligence made available to the government.

The statement said: “The cell is making frantic efforts to advance its IED-making capability through the acquisition of such chemicals as Sodium Azide (for producing improvised detonators), Potassium Chlorate (alternative to ammonium nitrate used for producing IEDs) and Aluminium Powder (a fuel source for amplifying explosions).

”One Usman, an IED apprentice, left the cell some time back to join Islamic State in Libya. The new desire to acquire IED precursor chemicals could suggest that Usman or other persons may have returned from Libya and have acquired IED-making skills intended to increase the activities of the group.

“Intelligence also revealed that the group is making serious efforts to acquire sophisticated arms, including shoulder-fired rocket launchers.

”Further intelligence monitoring has revealed that members of the Muslim Brotherhood are planning to forcefully free their members who are in detention in Kogi, Abuja and Kaduna,. Including one Bilyaminu, an IED expert for the group, who is now at Kuje prison.

Mohammed appealed to Nigerians to be vigilant and to report any suspicious persons or movements to the appropriate authorities.

Boko Haram and some of its affiliates have established cells in some parts of Kogi State.

On January 10, the Department of State Security Service ( DSS) arrested a kingpin of the sect in Okene town, Adavi local government area of Kogi State.

Identified as Abdullahi Mohammed, he was said to be the leader of the Boko Haram sect in Okene and was responsible for the coordination of Boko Haram activities in Okene axis of Kogi State.

On October 13, about 10 suspected Islamic fundamentalists were killed near Lokoja in Kogi State during a bloody encounter between an Islamic sect and men of the Nigerian Army.

FG’s lawyer withdraws from Justice Ngwuta’s trial

The lead prosecution lawyer in the trial of Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court, Charles Adeogun-Philips, on Thursday announced his withdrawal from the case.

Adeogun-Phillips, an ex-prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), while announcing his withdrawal at the resumption of proceedings, was silent on what informed his decision.

At the resumption of proceedings before the Federal High Court, Abuja, shortly after the judge, Justice John Tsoho asked parties if they were prepared for the case, Adeogun-Phillips rose to his feet and told the court he has resolved to opt out of the case.

When the case was called, a lawyer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, who had always accompanied Adeogun-Phillips to court, Mrs. Hajara Yusuf, announced her appearance for the prosecution.

She said: “I have been instructed to inform the court that Mr. Charles Adeogun-Philips, the lead prosecuting counsel, will no longer be appearing in this matter.

“In view of this change, myself and my colleagues will be appearing, subject to when arrangement will be made in due course.”

Justice Tsoho thanked Adeogun-Philips for his courtesy during his appearance for the prosecution.

“The court has taken notice of the withdrawal of the prosecution counsel, Mr. Charles. And the court wishes him success in his future endeavours,” the judge said.

Lead defence lawyer and former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), also commended Adeohun-Phillips for his conduct and wished him success in his future activities.

Cattle breeders deny involvement in ethno-religious violence nationwide

A group, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has denied claims in some quarters that its members were involved in ethnoreligious killings in some states across the country.

The group’s National Secretary, Baba Othman Ngelzarma said,  in a statement yesterday, urged security agencies to investigate those linking his group’s members to incidents of violence. Ngelzama, who commiserated with the people of Southern Kaduna, Delta and other states over recent  cases of attack and killings, said his group will continue to condemn perpetrators of evil regardless the groups or individuals involved.

“Precisely on the 9th December, 2016, one of our members was killed while ten of his cows were also allegedly killed by some elements from the Nimbo community in Enugu State, who crossed over to Idah Local Government area of Kogi State to commit the said crime.

“Then, some unscrupulous members of Igah community in Uzoajeh Local Government of Enugu State crossed over to Omasi in Anambra, killing twenty-two cows belonging to our members.

“This was followed by the killing of two of our members at Rugan Alahji Quadri, then five others were reportedly killed in Lushi, and worst still Fulani settlements of Bomaanda, Jollari (Garin Ardo Bakari) and Lande Jewshi were allegedly burnt down by some elements of Mumuyeh community in Lau Local Government of Taraba State.

“On that same fateful day, one of our members was also killed in a community close to Ganye in Jada Local Government area of Adamawa simply because some of his cows mistakenly strayed and damaged a few molded blocks in a block making factory.

“We were also notified of the killing of two villagers by Herdsmen in Ehuvu, in Ughelli North local government area.

“In recent times, precisely two Herdsmen were brutally killed on 7th January 2017 at Omobanam east in Anambra State for presumably ritual purposes.

“In all the reported cases, our timely intervention by calling for restraint amongst our members helped
forstalled the looming reprisal attacks.”

“Unfortunately, when such violence and killings occur, farmers and members of such communities receive favorable reporting, while herdsmen are singled out for condemnation.

“That has become like a recurring decimal, and also plays a major role in the deep seated animosity between the feuding parties. It is our firm belief that balance reportage would go a long way in addressing this ugly trend.

“Again, MACBAN vehemently disassociates itself from those who hold the view that the Southern Kaduna skirmishes between Fulanis and the other ethnic groupings represent a case of ethnic cleaning o religious war.

“Our resolve for peaceful co-existence between our members and their host communities remain firm. This explains our initiatives and recent trips to Enugu State where we rubbed minds with the Pan-Ndigbo Ohanaeze, and representatives of the Enugu State Governor on how best we can actualize our peace plan,” the group said.

EFCC recovers $9.75m, N1.25bn in two weeks

Mr Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday confirmed the recovery of 9.75 million dollars and 750,000 pounds from a residence in Kaduna state.

He also confirmed that N1.25 billion was recovered from a public servant and said that all the monies were recovered within two weeks.

Magu stated this in a report he presented to the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes during the 2016 budget performance appraisal and defence of 2017 budget before the committee.

He said the commission recovered N102.91 billion, 8.30 million dollars, GBP 29,155, 12,475 pounds, 117,004 Canadian dollars as proceeds of crime between January and December, 2016.

Other monies recovered during the period, he said, were 806.50 Dirham, 5,000 Francs and 2,000 Rupees.

“Out of the 37 accounts frozen/forfeited, six banks are yet to provide relevant information on the amount accrued into the suspected accounts within the period under review,’’ he said.

The document revealed that the commission secured 135 convictions, out of which 46 were from Lagos zone, 30 from Abuja zone, 22 from Port Harcourt zone, 19 from Kano zone, 15 from Enugu zone and three from Gombe zone during the period.

Magu acknowledged the support of the committee towards fast-tracking completing of EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

He disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Finance had listed the payment of N1.8 billion out of N2.9 billion meant for completion of the headquarters.

He, however, added that the commission had resuscitated its offices in Kaduna, Ibadan, Benin and Maiduguri as part of efforts to boost its operations across the country.

Magu urged the legislature to support the fight against graft, saying “corruption is fighting back”.

On recruitment, he said that the commission only recruited 331 cadets on equal quota basis across the country except Lagos, Ekiti, Bayelsa and Rivers with lower numbers.

Giving breakdown of the 2016 appropriated allocation to the commission, Magu told the committee that total budgetary approval was N18.89 billion, but that N14.74 billion representing 78.04 per cent was released.

He explained that N7.62 billion was for personnel cost, overhead was N2.75 billion while capital expenditure was N8.49 billion for the year.

Magu added that 91.1 per cent component of the released funds had so far been utilised.

Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Rep. Kayode Oladele, said that Nigeria had applied to join the league of members of Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an international anti-corruption agency.

He said that the move was part of efforts to strengthen ongoing anti-corruption crusade in the country.

Oladele, who lauded the development, expressed optimism that Nigeria would be admitted as “Observer Member’’ by the end of the year and would become full-time member in the nearest future.

“Our collective efforts to unleash sustainable development in Nigeria through the rooting out of corruption will not produce the desired result if Nigeria is unable to transact in the international market place without let or hindrance.

“In this regard, Nigeria has applied to join the FATF and based on the level of our commitment.

“A high-level delegation from the FATF is due to visit Nigeria in March, 2017, to meet with various stakeholders and report back to its plenary in June, this year.

“I have no doubt that we will be successfully accredited and admitted at the end of the exercise,” he said.

Oladele commended EFCC for the successes recorded so far and said: “for the first time in Nigeria’s history, anti-corruption searchlights have been beamed on the judiciary and the revelations have been mind-blogging.

“In addition, similar exercises in the arms procurement process by the Nigerian military have also led to several arrests.

“Overall, the EFCC made the highest number of recoveries of stolen resources, running into billions of naira in a single year in the annals of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.”

The chairman solicited the support of Nigerians in stemming the scourge of corruption in various facets of the economy.

According to him, the fight against corruption is one of the most potent weapons to fight recession which structural cause is rooted in waste, looting, misplacement of priorities and misappropriation of yesteryears.

Oladele also pledged the support of the house to the EFCC and assured of life assurance for the commission’s operatives. (NAN)

IPMAN: fuel scarcity imminent

The Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) yesterday raised the alarm that petrol may soon be scarce as private depot owners are now selling the product above pump price.

Its Vice National President, Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, who disclosed this to The Nation on phone yesterday, added that owing to the prevailing situation in the depots nationwide, marketers in far areas may increase their pump prices.

He said: “Our members have started complaining about the issue of this price increase by private depots owners. They are increasing the price now seriously which will not allow our marketers to sell the product at the government rate.

“They are selling at between N140 and N143 from the private depots.  And if the NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) and DPR (Department of Petroleum Resources) do not take drastic measure against it, it may likely cause scarcity nationwide.

“Since the private depots are not selling at the DPR’s dictate, these private depots are selling above the government rate that we are supposed to pay. They are supposed to give us this product at the rate of N133.28. This is giving us serious problem nationwide now.

“The normal rate at which the marketers are supposed to sell this product is at the rate of N145 and we are supposed to get this product at the rate of N133.28 and we are not getting it like that.

“This is a serious problem as the marketers cannot sell above government rate and if the marketers cannot sell the product automatically, there will be scarcity.

“The other marketers who are in remote areas may start to push up their price because there is no way you can do the business without gain.”

According to him, it is not an excuse for the depot owners to claim that they sell above petrol pump price due to scarcity of foreign exchange.

He added that the  NNPC is now the sole importer of the product so marketers cannot blame their hike on scarcity of forex.

This, manipulation, said Maigandi, is known to the DPR.

“DPR and NNPC are all aware. You can confirm from them why the private depots are selling above the government rate. And nobody is importing the product other than NNPC. So they have no excuse to say that it is because of the forex. It is NNPC that is solely bringing  this product. So for them to say they are selling above official price because of forex is not true,” he said.

Reacting, the NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu said the corporation was unaware  that private depot owners had increased  their pump prices.

According to him, the NNPC as a player in the industry like other marketers, and has always stayed within the band of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA).

Multichoice profiles DJ Scratchmaster for tomorrow’s BBNaija party

The one-hour Saturday party for the BBNaija housemates is one of the highlights of the show, and one that fans look forward to. Tomorrow, the remaining 12 housemates will dance to celebrate the exit of one or two of the five housemates that have been put up for possible eviction on Sunday. They include Bassey, Bisola, Gifty, Debbie-Rise and CocoIce.

Despite the looming eviction, the party usually puts the housemates in high spirit, with so much to drink, while they dance to a collection of club bangers.

Organisers of the show presents, for tomorrow’s party, Keron Hector, aka DJ Scratch Master, from Trinidad on the wheel of steel.

A producer and sound technician who’s been making waves since he was a teenager back in 1990. Throughout his career he’s also earned quite a reputation for his cool, calm and collected demeanor which is in stark contrast to his electric sets and soul stirring remixes known far and wide.

For the biggest moment of the week, being Sunday evening’s eviction, the man to look forward to is Falz The Bahd Guy.

It is not clear if his singing partner, Simi, will accompany him on the show, but Falz will, as usual, bring to the live show, his comic rap songs to the delight of studio audience and viewers across 54 African countries.

Going by some of the remarkable moments in the Big Brother Naija house after the exit of Soma and Miyonse, Kemen poured his heart out to Marvis telling her that he felt that Uriel really liked him but was afraid of falling in love with him. Marvis kept trying to get him to open up more by playing devil’s advocate. Little did he know that Uriel had told Biggie earlier that Kemen would be the last person on earth she would think of dating and that she would rather remain single. Thus, he might not be getting any Valentine’s Day gifts from Uriel.

ThinTallTony was also in a heart to heart with Bisola about his childhood and his mother while Gifty got under the covers and answered Bally’s questions. Bally wanted to know if she had ever been unfaithful and she said “Only once.” She then went on to say that she didn’t like “weak men,” “You’re telling me no, I say yes” meaning that she wanted a man to fight for her.

Will Uriel put Kemen out of his misery? Is Bally interested in Gifty or why would he ask her such leading questions? Indeed there are so many questions begging for answers. Tomorrow’s eviction will lighten up some of the grey areas.

He explained that the programme was to give financial support to them to boost production of cassava, rice and maize, adding that attention would also be given to fisheries and poultry farming.

Admonishing youths to key into the opportunities offered by the programme to earn a living, he said everything would be done to ensure that they benefited maximally from the programme.

The coordinator, Ogun State Youth in Agric Business, Comrade Olugbenga Ige, thanked the state government and the CBN for the opportunity to be self-employed and help in diversifying the economy.

What Justice Ademola earns, official tells court

An account official of the Federal High Court yesterday shed light into the earning of federal judges.
He said a judge goes home with about N833,638.76 monthly made up of N528,638.76 basic salary and N305,000 welfare allowance.

The Chief Accountant of the Federal High Court, Mr. Awoyemi Adisa,  stated this while testifying at the resumed hearing of the trial of Justice Adeniyi Ademola, his wife Olabowale and a lawyer, Joe Agi (SAN), at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja.

He gave a breakdown of  other allowances due to a federal judge as including furniture allowance paid every four years, annual leave allowance, annual estacode for medical check-up abroad and car advance of about N7 million  which the judges are to pay back in 60 months.

Adisa said he was unable to provide the total amount a judge was entitled to because he had never had cause to do the calculation.

“Apart from salaries and emoluments, the first defendant (Justice Ademola) is paid other allowances. Honourable judges of the Federal High Court are paid furniture allowance once in four years to the tune of N5,514,280.

“Aside that, they are entitled to N305,000 monthly welfare allowance. Also they are entitled to allowances for overseas medical check-up once in a year. The estacode allowance is paid. The figure for overseas medical check-up may not be the same from year to year because of fluctuation of dollars.

“For last year, they were paid air fare to the tune of N1.6m. On this record, the estacode is not stated. But the estacode was paid to them in dollars. Because of the volatility of the exchange rate, the money available could not cater for what was on the budget, so we applied to the Central Bank of Nigeria for dollars after providing them with the travelling documents of the judges.

“If I can remember, they (the judges were paid $6,300 as estacode. They are also entitled to leave allowance which is N180,474 once in a year. There are some seminars they attend and allowances as well air fare are paid to cover the seminars.

“To my knowledge, all they are paid is what is contained in this document. I don’t have the total figure of what goes to the judges because I have not totalled them,” he said.

When asked why the documents he brought to court only contained the judge’s earnings from 2009 to 2016, leaving out 2004 to 2008, the witness said: “Within the short period of time given to us to produce the documents this is what we could readily provide. Prior to 2009, the salaries and emoluments documents were prepared manually.

“It is noteworthy to mention that the court moved its headquarters from Lagos to Abuja in 2011. The manual records of salaries and emoluments were left behind in Lagos.”

Under cross-examination, he added that judges are paid car advance of N7,201,000 payable back for 60 months.

He said not only was Justice Ademola from a well-known family, being a grandson of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, he was still entitled to benefit from the assets owned by his late grandfather.

Another prosecution witness, a ballistician with the Police, Taminu Jeremiah, gave evidence in relation to the two Avar Magnum Pump Action guns allegedly recovered from Justice Ademola’s Abuja home during a raid by men of the Department of State Services (DSS).

An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jeremiah, who said he was the only surviving ballistician in the police, said the guns fell into the category of prohibited guns for which only the President could issue its licence to individuals. The trial continues today.

NLC to Fed Govt: cut off looters’ hands as a deterrent

THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday asked the Federal Government to cut off the hands of those found to have stolen public funds.

It urged government to name and shame those involved to serve as a deterrent to others.

Addressing a protest rally for good governance at the Unity Fountain in Abuja, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said it was unfortunate a few individuals stole the nation’s common wealth and nothing had been done to bring them to book.

Wabba said government must prove to the world it was serious about winning the fight against corruption and recovering stolen money as well as the alleged $22 billion not remitted to the Federation Account from sale of oil and gas.

He said when the hands of such people are amputated, Nigerians would be able to identify them as those who stole public funds and who were responsible for the country’s recession.

He said: “We must not allow a situation where few, because of their interest, will hold the system to ransom. We are demanding increase in electricity supply and they are saying add more tariff, we are demanding increase in minimum wage and they say they are going to be paying in percentage. We should not be tired.

“Why should somebody steal one billion naira and walk the street free. We are demanding that they should be named and shamed. We are also demanding that one of their hands be cut off so that when we see them, we will know that they are people that have stolen our money.

“So, let us not be tired. Not to pay salaries and pensions is criminal. Not to increase our wages in this condition is corruption and so, we must demand good governance and support the fight against corruption.”

President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, said efforts must be made to end corruption in the country.

He said: “We must end corruption in this country and support good governance. It is only in Nigerian that corrupt people are being celebrated.

“We want to tell the world that we are insisting that corruption must be fought to a standstill. Those people who are aiding and abating corruption should be prepared for the wrath of Nigerians. If you escort criminals to court, we will follow you there and disgrace you.

“Today, we have to show our displeasure because it is only in Nigeria. Workers and the downtrodden are suffering. Their pay is not increased, while we have daily increase in inflation and recession because of the stolen wealth that has not been redistributed to Nigerians.

“We have so much corruption in the states and local governments to the extent that bailout fund given to them will be diverted. We are going to follow them with EFCC and ICPC to make sure that those diverting our bailout fund meant for the payment of salaries, pension and arrears of promotion must be dealt with.”

Security operatives yesterday prevented the protesting workers from the Presidential Villa to deliver their protest message to Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The letter demanded good governance and sustained fight against corruption.

The workers, led by Wabba and Bobboi Kaigama, who were matching to the Presidential Villa from the Unity Fountain, were stopped at the Federal Secretariat by armed security operatives at 11.05 am.

They were, however, asked to send a delegation of their leaders to take their message to the Villa, a request which they initially turned down, insisting the Acting President either send a representative to receive their message or they be allowed to enter the Villa to deliver the message.

However, 20 representatives of the workers were later selected to take their message to the Acting President while the rest waited for their leaders.

They were entertained by the music of legendary Fela Anikulakpo Kuti, the late Bob Marley, among others.

Traffic on the busy Shehu Shagari Way was diverted as the workers partially blocked the road waiting for a response from the Villa.

The placard-carrying workers were, among other things, demanding good governance, accountability and sustained fight against corruption.

Some of the placards read: “Make payment of salaries a priority”; “Our salaries can’t take us home again”; “Electricity tariff hike in the face of darkness is the height of wickedness”; “Building infrastructure without payment of salaries is corruption”; “Owing workers’ salaries is an act of corruption”; “No electricity, no industrialisation”; “Replace importation with production” and “Non-payment of pension is bad governance” and others.

About two hours later, the leaders emerged from the Presidential Villa to inform the workers that they were well-received by the Acting President in company of some cabinet ministers and given the assurance that their demands will be looked into by the government.

Also, human rights lawyer Mr. Femi Falana yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to prosecute those, who diverted the money meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

He spoke at Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’ office when organised labour made a peaceful protest to his office.

Falana, while appreciating labour, said: “President Buhari should flush out corrupt officials out of his government and those involved in the diversion of IDPs money should be prosecuted.”

The lawyer urged states to join the fight against corruption.

His word: “In spite of the promises made by this government to make life good for the people, pensioners are dying; things are getting difficult every day.

“I urged organised labour to ensure payment of pensions and salaries of workers. Despite recession, convoys of governors are still very long and they still purchase cars.”

According to him, Buhari government should know that “the honeymoon is over”.

Falana, who wished Buhari speedy recovery, condemned officials of government who travel abroad for medical treatments.

“It is a shame that our governors and President still travel abroad for medical treatment”, he said.

Commissioner for Establishment Akintola Benson  promised to deliver the message to the governor.

Legal battle looms as AMCON names new managers for Arik

New managers were yesterday appointed for Arik Air to save the airline from a debilitating financial turbulence.

The Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) took over the management of Nigeria’s biggest airline.

But the airline rejected the takeover and vowed to challenge it in court.

AMCON, according to a statement, appointed Captain Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu as the managing director and Mr Seyi Opasanya (SAN) as the receiver.

The takeover, according to AMCON, clearly underscores the government’s decision to instil sanity in the aviation sector and also to preserve Arik as a going concern.

Security was heavy at the airline’s head office.

The AMCON statement reads: “From all indications, respite may have come the way of Arik Airlines currently immersed in heavy financial debt burden that is threatening to permanently ground the airline.

“For some time now, the airline, which carries about 55 per cent  of the load in the country, has been going through difficult times that are attributable to its bad corporate governance, erratic operational challenges, inability to pay staff salaries and heavy debt burden, among other issues, which led to the call for authorities in the country to intervene before Arik goes under like many before it.

“The move, which clearly underscores government’s decision to instill sanity in the nation’s aviation sector, has also prevented a major catastrophe that would, among other factors, protect and preserve Arik Airlines as a going concern.”

AMCON said the development would afford Arik, which is the largest local carrier to go back to regular and undisrupted operations, avoid job losses, protect investors and stakeholder funds as well as ensure safety and stability in the already challenged aviation sector.

The statement reads: “ The airline would now be managed by Capt. Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu, a veretan aviation expert under the receivership of Mr. Oluseye Opasanya, SAN.”

Explaining the rationale for the intervention Minister of State for Aviation Hadi Siriki said: “We believe that this appointment is timely and will stabilize the operations of the airline.”

This, he said, will enhance the long term economic value of Arik Air and revitalise the airline’s ailing operations as well as sustain safety standards, in view of Arik Air’s pivotal role in the Nigerian aviation sector.”

The Minister, who said the Ministry of Aviation would support the management of the strategic carrier, added that all steps had been taken to ensure that there would be no undue disruption of Arik’s operations or activities of other stakeholders, on account of the changes.

Capt. Ilegbodu, under the receivership of Opasanya, SAN has also assured the staff of the troubled airline and all other stakeholders that his appointment would, among other objectives, enhance the value of Arik, improve customer experience, and sustain the safety, reliable and secure operational history of the airline.

“As a matter of fact, Arik Airline has been in a precarious situation largely attributable to its heavy financial debt burden, bad corporate governance, erratic operational challenges and other issues, that require immediate intervention in order to guarantee the continued survival of the Airline.”

Yesterday, Arik temporarily suspended its flight operations to the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, United States, claiming that the two Airbus A330-200 aircraft dedicated to the route had been taken to France for C checks.

More than eight aircraft are grounded, making it difficult for the airline to make routine commercial flights.

The statement reads :” The myriad of issues confronting Arik Air of late ranges from confiscation of aircraft due to non-payment of leases, frequent flight delays, constant fracas between Arik staff and irate passengers at both local and international airports etc.

“During the last Yuletide season, passengers were stranded in airports all over the country due to Arik’s incessant flight delays and cancellations, which negatively affected the preference they enjoy from passengers. You are all living examples of this.

“The airline is so overwhelmed to the extent that the workers’ wages are not paid for several months, leading to occasional confrontation between the management of Arik and different aviation unions in the country.

“It was Arik’s inability to pay its workers for seven months that forced the United Labour Congress (ULC) and Engineers Union to recently shut the offices of the airline across the country, causing untold hardship to thousands of travellers and an embarrassment to the aviation sector.

“Besides owing workers’ salaries, the airline has also not been remitting the taxes of workers to relevant bodies, thus also defrauding the country.

“The airline is also in perpetual default in its lease payments and insurance premium, leading to regular and embarrassing repossession of its aircraft by Lessors. Various class actions are pending against the airline all over the world.

“We assure all stakeholders that the intervention is in the best interest of the general public, workers, creditors and other aviation interest groups.”

Buhari fires Aso Rock army bodyguards, replaces them with DSS.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the replacement of men of the Nigerian Army with operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) as his bodyguards, Vanguard reports.
The directive was reportedly given by the President before his departure to the UK for vacation.

It was learnt that the Chief Security Officer, to the President, CSO Bashir Abubakar had expressed displeasure at soldiers protecting the President.

It was further gathered there had been a running battle between the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) Abdulraman Mani and the Aide de Camp (ADC) to the President, Colonel Lawal Abubakar on which of the agencies would do the job.

A source said “protection of the President by body Guards is actually the work of the DSS but Mr. President did not have confidence in the service because of the way they treated him during the campaigns.

“The soldiers were moved into the inner circle of the security network while SSS operated at the periphery. This has not gone down well with both services. Mr. President was convinced to reverse this order”.

Corrupt uniformed men to blame for high cost of food items – Minister

Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh

Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has blamed rising cost of food items on corrupt practices of men of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Army, and Nigeria Customs Service.

Ogbeh told stunned members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture that the extortionist practices of the uniformed operatives especially at the numerous check points and ports was responsible for the acute hunger in the land.

The minister spoke at the 2017 budget defence of his ministry.

He noted that despite having written formally to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, and other heads of security agencies against the unhealthy situation, the fraudulent practices remained unabated.

Ogbeh said: “One of the factors responsible for the high cost of food items is the daily unbearable extortions men of the Nigeria Police, their counterpart in the Army and Customs Service visit on truck drivers conveying farm produce from the hinterland to urban centres under the guise of carrying out security checks.

“These truck drivers based on raw lamentations made to the Ministry in recent time, alleged that at every check points, they are always forced to part with reasonable amount of money by any group of the security agencies, which they said, made farmers to have no option than to factor cost of the extortion into prices of the food items”.

Ogbe also listed other factors that affect government’s agricultural policies including high cost of diesel which now sells for N300 per litre .

He noted that because trucks conveying farm produce are powered by diesel, the cost of diesel affect the cost of the produce.
He also said that the treaty on free movement of goods and services put in place by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) among member states, paved the way for movement of not less than 300,000 trucks of grains outside Nigeria on daily.

The Ministry of Agriculture, he said, cannot check such huge movement of grains outside the country..

He assured that the federal government would soon reduce prices of food items following the Presidential committee set up to that effect.

He however said that farmers were already kicking against the move to reduce the prices of food items.

Ogbeh noted that farmers were angry with him over the move to reduce prices of food items because they see the subsisting situation as very favourable economically to them.

He said: “The situation on ground as far as high prices of food items are concerned is one of a dilemma to me because while the city dwellers are unhappy with us, farmers are very happy and seriously kicking against any move to tamper with their happiness by cutting down the high price of farm produce for now.”

The Minister said one of such farmers asked him recently in Katsina not to tamper with the present price of food items.

The farmer, he said, claimed that he made N4 million from the sales of Sorghum which had catapulted him from the realm of poverty to that of affluence.

He said that another farmer in Anambra state claimed to have made N1 million profit from sales of rice as a result of the current market price.

Ogbeh told the committee that his Ministry’s 2017 budget would be driven by the need for food security in the country.

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday said there were plans to remove yellow buses, popularly known as danfo, from Lagos roads. The idea of this buses is a really fantastic one, I just hope it won’t send people’s husbands and fathers, the men who currently operate the Danfo buses, into unemployment.

Guest Blogger | Nkem Ndem: Valentine’s Day Is Not A Do-Or-Die Matter

I am going to be completely honest: I am a huge romantic. I love love…and as such, I certainly adore the idea of a specific day being set aside to celebrate love. Unfortunately, though, I haven’t had much luck with Valentine’s Day!

My earliest memory of the holiday is of my bubble literally bursting after a package I found in my schoolbag (and had been so excited about) revealed a rusty GL neck-chain which my secret crush -who sadly, wasn’t the guy I fancied at the time- had obtained from his grandmother’s box of rejected pieces of jewelry and placed in a card designed with the picture of a half-eaten apple and a mouth that said “You are so delicious”.

Even worse was Valentine’s Day 2008, My 3rd year at Covenant University, when a porter at Deborah Hall, one of school hostels, seized the bag of provisions my mother had sent to me through a family friend, Obinna, with claims that Valentine gifts were not allowed from males at the female hostels. The thought of that day still brings tears to my eyes. It was the worst experience ever. Not only did I have to deal with the pain of realizing that I would have to survive the next 4 weeks without Milk, Milo, Rice Krispies, Titus Sardines and other school-life necessities, I also had to sit through hours of watching other girls gush over the Val gifts their boyfriends managed to smuggle into the hall and silently wonder when “amoshine”.

Over the years, I have come to realize that contrary to what romantic comedies had me believing since I was about 6, Valentine’s Day actually isn’t all that great. In reality, it is more like a number of the fancy clubs on Lagos Island- the idea of the club is way better than the actual club in itself. The music is so loud you are in a constant state of stress; the people suck; you spend so much money but never have any fun really; yet, you keep coming back, telling yourself that will it get better.

Let’s face it, Nigerians are submerged in the cultural hypnosis that nudges them to associate true love and commitment with Valentine’s Day. I consider this a form of “conditioning” as the Valentine’s Day of today so obviously has nothing to do with real love. It is now a highly commercialized day of forced love with the main beneficiaries being brands that get to sell you anything from red flowers and chocolates to exorbitant destination getaways. Even worse, having a date on this day, also, has become a status symbol more than anything else, and for some God-knows-why reason, being able to celebrate Valentine’s Day means that you are somehow better or more successful than your single friends.

Quite honestly, the level of pressure this holiday brings is worse than that of a shaken bottle of Coke. The singles who dream of being coupled up, face the pressure of finding a date at all costs; those who are dating feel the pressure to find the ultimate gift or pull off the most original and meaningful romantic gesture ever; and Nigerian girls who like to show off their Val gifts certainly do not want to be at the bottom of the totem pole, so, they weary their men and literally everyone else with their demands. In fact, even the men -especially the stingy and weak ones- who do not want to deal with all the pressure, say and do all they can to get away with not celebrating it. You find them making such silly statements as “every day is Valentine’s day”, “Can’t you see it’s quarter to Buhari O’clock?”, or “Love should be spontaneous and not contrived, Valentine’s day defeats that purpose”. Some even go as far as breaking up with their girlfriends days before February 14th.

The truth is, Valentine’s Day celebrations is not a do-or-die affair. The choice to go ahead with the celebration is up to you and if you decide you don’t want it or that the day is not for you, no one will kill you (hopefully). Of course, the sentiment behind the day is probably worth celebrating but…whether you choose to abstain from the celebrations, or whether you go along with the commercialized way we presently celebrate the holiday, note that your grand gestures will not be able to replace emotional intimacy if the security of your bond is already in question. Also, for those who are single and filled with resentment for people with partners to celebrate the holiday with…please, "Stop it. Stop jealous". The day is not just for those who have partners, and as such, you are not required to have a “bae” to enjoy it. Make the most of the day. And if not for anything, take full advantage of this day because it is a day in your life.

I am hoping this February 14th will be pleasant for everyone really. Surely, every Nigerian can use a bit of love at this time as we keep standing together #IstandwithNigeria

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Oprah is Richer...........

Image via Getty

Oprah Winfrey is $150 million or so richer (excluding taxes or whatever) after selling an immensely expensive 1912 painting. Good for her.

According to Bloomberg, Oprah made “one of the biggest private art deals of 2016" when she parted with a piece of artwork by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt for $150 million. The new owner of the painting is an unidentified, also wealthy, person from China.

The painting has a rich pre-Oprah history that dates back to World War II when it was found among other Nazi-stolen paintings. In 2006, the heirs of the subject of the painting reacquired it after a legal battle. Oprah has made a decent profit after buying the art, Page Six reports:
Already one of the world’s richest people with a net worth of $2.9 billion, Winfrey originally purchased the “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer” for $87.9 million at a Christie’s auction in 2006.

Klimt created the painting in 1912 and it depicts the wife of an art patron and industrialist in Vienna.

A source says Oprah loaned the painting to the Museum of Modern Art in 2014. Via Bloomberg:

While the Klimt was hanging at MOMA’s fifth-floor galleries last year, Winfrey was approached through Geffen by art dealer Larry Gagosian, who had a potential buyer lined up, said the person. Winfrey was willing to let it go for $150 million, according to the person.

Before she sold the work to an unidentified Chinese buyer during the summer, Winfrey agreed to temporarily lend it to Neue Galerie for the exhibition “Klimt and the Women of Vienna’s Golden Age, 1900–1918,” which ran from Sept. 22 to Jan. 16.

Minister Kick-Starts Tour of Tourist Sites With Visit To Owu Fall

Minister Kick-Starts Tour of Tourist Sites With Visit To Owu Fall

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, kicked-started a tour of tourist sites in the country with a visit to the spectacular Owu Waterfall in Kwara State on Sunday.

The Minister, who was accompanied by representatives of the local community in which the Waterfall is located, officials of the Kwara State Ministry of Culture and Tourism as well as the media, described Owu Waterfall as one of the wonders of nature, saying the government is now looking toward natural assets like the waterfall with a view to developing them for economic benefits.

“We are all awed by the awesomeness nature of the Almighty. You can’t begin to wonder where is the source of this water and what I found most enticing and really baffling is the louder we shout, the more the volume of the waterfall.
This is one of those natural assets that we have been bestowed with and there is no country that has this kind of assets that will not be able to exploit it for economic benefit,” he said.
Alhaji Mohammed underscored the dearth of infrastructure as one of the major challenges confronting tourism development in Nigeria, but expressed optimism that the revitalization of the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT) will bring about synergy within the government to surmount the challenge.
“Fortunately we have been very busy trying to revitalize the Presidential Council on Tourism because tourism is not a stand-alone ministry.
Without the cooperation of other ministries such as Power, Works and Housing – because you need to provide road, electricity and security – you cannot actually have a vibrant tourism industry.
I am happy I came here personally today and I have seen it and at the next meeting of the Steering Committee of the PCT, we will actually put this across,” he said.

The Minister promised to liaise with his counterpart in the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to give priority to the construction of t0he 7-kilometer access road to the waterfall.
He also commended the Owa-Onire Community and the Kwara State Government for encouraging tourists to visit the Owu Waterfall through the facilitation of access and the provision of security.
The Tour Guide and a leader in the community, Mr. Akanbi Sunday, who chronicled the history of the Owu Waterfall, thanked Alhaji Mohammed for being the first-ever Minister of Information and Culture to visit the waterfall.
The Minister had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Onire of Owa-Onire, Oba Abdulraham Fabiyi, telling the traditional ruler he was in the community to have a first-hand knowledge of the Owu Waterfall with a view to developing it as a viable tourist site, in line with the diversification policy of the Federal Government.

Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, Takes Over Arik Air

The Federal Government has taken over Arik Airline by appointing an Aviation expert, Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu, to manage the company under the receivership of Oluseye Opasanya SAN.
The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, explained that decision to intervene “clearly underscores the government’s commitment to instill sanity in the country’s aviation sector to prevent a major catastrophe”.
The Minister of state for Aviation,Hadi Sirika, expressed optimism that the development will bring about stability in the airline.
Arik has been experiencing difficulties in recent times. Some of the issues that have plagued the airline include: confiscation of aircraft due to non-payment of leases, frequent flight delays, and constant fracas between its staff and aggrieved passengers.
Sirika said in a statement, “We believe that this appointment is timely and will stabilise the operations of the airline.
“This will enhance the long term economic value of Arik Air and revitalize the airline’s ailing operations as well as sustain safety standards, in view of Arik Air’s pivotal role in the Nigerian aviation sector.”
He also pledged that the Aviation ministry would support the new management of the airline and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to ensure that there would be no undue disruption on Arik’s regular business operations.
AMCON said Arik, the largest local carrier, can now go back to regular and undisrupted operations to avoid “job losses, protect investors and stakeholder funds”.
It continued in a statement, “From all indications, respite may have come the way of Arik Airlines currently immersed in heavy financial debt burden that is threatening to permanently ground the airline.
“For some time now, the airline, which carries about 55% of the load in the country, has been going through difficult times that are attributable to its bad corporate governance, erratic operational challenges, inability to pay staff salaries and heavy debt burden among other issues, which led to the call for authorities in the country to intervene before Arik goes under like many before it.”
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, some passengers disrupted operations at its headquarters at the Lagos airport.
During the last Yuletide, passengers were stranded in airports all over the country due to cases of flight delays and cancellations by Arik, which negatively affected the preference they enjoy from passengers.
AMCON noted that, “the airline is so overwhelmed to the extent that the worker’s wages are not paid for several months, leading to occasional confrontation between the management of Arik and different Aviation Unions in the country.
“It was Arik’s inability to pay its workers for seven months that forced the United Labour Congress (ULC) and Engineers Union to recently shut the offices of the Airline across the country causing untold hardship to thousands of travelers and an embarrassment to the aviation sector in the country.
“Besides owing workers’ salaries, the Airline has also not been remitting the taxes of workers to relevant bodies thus also defrauding the country. The airline is also in perpetual default in its lease payments and insurance premium, leading to regular and embarrassing repossession of its aircraft by Lessors. Various class actions are pending against the airline all over the world.”

S/Africa Unveils $260 A Month Minimum Wage | Which Is Four Times Better Than Nigeria’s N18,000

The South African government has unveiled a national minimum wage of 3,500 rand ($261) per month in 2018, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, the announcement follows protracted negotiations between the government and labour unions. The Deputy President also added that the national minimum wage, which equates to 20 rand ($1.50) per hour, would come into effect in May 2018.

“The balance we have sought to strike is that it must not be too low, so that it doesn’t affect the lowest paid workers, but not too high that it leads to massive job losses,” Ramaphosa told a news conference.
He also explained that firms and businesses that are unable to afford the minimum wage would be permitted to apply for an exemption of up to 12 months.
The development has been greeted with approval from supporters who maintained that it would stimulate growth as workers can spend more, and reduce inequality.
However, critics have said that it could lead to increased unemployment as employers will be unable to afford higher wage bills.
Meanwhile, the announcement is coming at a time when Africa’s most popular nation, Nigeria, is battling to raise its own minimum wage as it has been gorged in the abysmal depth of an economic crisis.
The country’s current minimum wage stands at N18,000 ($60) with organised labour demanding that it be increased to at least N50,000 ($166), even though several states and local governments have ‘continuously’ defaulted on the existing amount.
The Nigerian government has failed to accede to the demand of labour in the wake of a biting recession that has crippled Africa’s largest economy.
This was evident in the recent protest by labour unions who argued that the N18,000 is way below a living wage and cannot meet basic needs of workers.

UNILAG Distances Itself From Purported Dress Code Issued To Students

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has distanced itself from a purported dress code issued to students.
The refutation was issued in a statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information, University of Lagos, Prof. Toyin Adebule, on Thursday.

Reports had some days ago made the round that the school ‘in a memo has approved new dress code for students.’
In a memo purported on Tuesday, it was alleged that the university had issued a new dress code for students, adding that indecent dressing did not ‘reflect the seriousness, dignity and character-moulding nature of academic enterprise’.

Among others, the report claimed that the university had outlawed tight-fitting clothes as well as mini skirts and dresses.
However, the University said it did not approve new dress codes, while stating that it encourages decent dressing.

The statement read: “The University of Lagos wishes to inform the general public that it has not approved or implemented any new dress code for its students. The general public is hereby advised to discountenance any campaign in the print, electronic or social media claiming that the University of Lagos has introduced a new dress code for its students. All such claims are false and do not emanate from the university.

“However, it is pertinent to state that the university encourages students to dress decently and our watchword is, ‘Dress as you want to be addressed’.

More than half of teachers in Niger have fake certificates – Governor Bello

Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger has said that 60 per cent of primary and secondary school teachers in public schools in the state used fake and invalid certificates to obtain teaching jobs.

Bello made the statement when he received members of the Board of Directors of Bida Emirate Education Forum, led by its Chairman, Prof. Jonathan Ndagi, in Minna on Wednesday.
He said that the attention of the state government had been drawn to the fact that most primary and secondary school teachers used fake certificates to get employment.

According to him, most of the teachers in public schools do not have the requirement and are not qualified to teach.
He said, “Information reaching us is that majority of our teachers in public schools do not have the competency to teach and that is why the state has record of mass failure in WAEC and NECO.
“Primary school is the basic foundation for children, if the foundation is faulty, then we will bring graduating students who cannot compete with their compatriots.”
The governor directed the Ministry of Education to look at the challenges facing public schools and suggest how best government can intervene.
He said, “Identify the genuine teachers and the fake ones. The real teachers will be compensated and paid well.
“Teachers’ salaries will be reviewed and those with fake certificates will be fished out because if we allow this to continue it will mean the children of the ordinary men don’t have hope.”
Earlier, Ndagi disclosed that the emirate generated N107m as Internally Generated Revenue since 2001 to date.
He said the organisation spent N124m on the renovation of classrooms, establishment of computer-based test centres and creation of women development centres.
The chairman added that the emirate also sponsored 150 indigenous students for pre-degree programmes in Federal University of Technology, Minna.
He said that the state government only supported the emirate with N20m since 2001 and called for more support.

TY Bello directs ‘Coming to America’ Sequel, stars Nigeria’s Humblesmith

The old movie featured Eddie Murphy and it’s still one of the best, if not the best he ever starred in but what if I tell you that Nigeria’s rising high-life artiste, Humblesmith has starred in a sequel of that and it was directed in Nigeria by the fabulous TY Bello?

It was a unique story of a Golden Prince who is set to leave his comfort zone for a new and more fulfilling life. It is the story of Humblesmith, the Golden Prince of Africa and who else could have shot it perfectly like TY Bello.
A photoshoot like no other, themed after the famous movie, ‘Coming to America’. If Eddie Murphy could see this, he would jump at the perfect representation of that hit movie. No, Humblesmith is not starring in a movie but TY Bello re-enacted Eddie Murphy into Humblesmith in a recent photoshoot in Lagos.
