Putting cellphone in the pockets can cause infertility in men.

A Cell Phone

A Chemical Pathologist, Prof. Ganiyu Arinola, has advised men against putting cellphone in their trouser pockets, saying it may cause male infertility.

Arinola, who is the Head, Department of Chemical Pathology, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, gave the advice in Ibadan.

According to him, public attention has been drawn to the issue of safety of radiations from laptops and putting cellphone in the pockets.

“This calls for special focus, considering the fact that infertility has affected certain percentages of couples of reproductive age.

“It is worthy of note that nearly half of these percentages have been linked to male infertility.

“Other factors include exposure to certain environmental pollutants, lifestyle, occupation and infections of the urinary genital tract which have been linked to male infertility.

“Putting cellphone in the pockets or hang on a belt is recently proposed to be the cause of infertility, especially in the males,’’ he said.

Arinola, who is also a senior lecturer of Immunology at the University of Ibadan, said that studies carried out, using various methodologies, linked cellphones radiation to male infertility.

According to him, opinions differ as to the possible mechanism by which cellphones radiation may produce these changes within the short-time of putting it in the male pockets.

“Radiation from cellphones is said to affect sperm structure, mobility/movement, vitality or being alive for expected length of time.

“But, it is known that millions of sperm cells are released during mating and only one sperm is needed to fertilise the female egg.

“The likelihood is that all the sperms may not be damaged at the same time, but within the short-time of putting cell-phones in the pocket.

“Based on the health risks from cellphone radiation, it is advisable that simple precautionary safe method of handling cellphone should be practiced in order to protect health and fertility.

“Men should put their cell phones in the pockets of their shirts or suits, car safe, or hold it by hands, which are not in direct contact with testis sac.

“This is a wake-up call to the men of reproductive age,’’ he said.

Arinola also advised that cellphone users should be cautious of the duration of phone possession, frequency of daily use, length of use and where they are kept.

He said: “Human body, such as layers of the skin, bone and tissue offer protection from the direct radiation of cellphone.

“Sperm damage was suggested to be the production of `toxic’ or reactive oxygen species by radiation from cellphones.”

Arinola further explained that the reactive oxygen species were particularly harmful to living cells and proteinous substances, which according to him, our body sperm cells and supporting materials are made-up of.

“The production of oxygen species by cellphone radiation raises the possibility that cellphone radiation, as a result of careless placements and long term use, can contribute to sperm damage.

“Based on the health risks from cellphone radiation, it is advisable that simple precautionary safe method of handling cellphone should be practiced in order to protect health and fertility.

A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. Alexander Owolabi, had described infertility as major burden on clinical service delivery in Nigeria, leading to marital disharmony and physical violence against women.

Owolabi, who is also an In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) expert with the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH)), Ile-Ife, said, “There is gender discrimination as to who among the couple is responsible for infertility.’’

While delivering the 306th Inaugural Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun, said: “About 40 per cent of infertility is due to problems in the female, 40 per cent to problems in the male, and 15 per cent to combined male/female problems.

“In five per cent, there is no recognisable cause,’’ he said.

Owolabi said that the factors predispose to HIV such as greater marital instability and higher likelihood of extramarital sexual partners when a couple was frustrated by the inability to have a child.

According to him, experiences from clinical practice in Nigeria indicate that infertility is a major burden on clinical service delivery in Nigeria.

He said several reports indicated that infertility was the most frequent reason for gynaecological consultation in Nigeria.

Owolabi said: “As result of high premium place on child bearing, and since in this environment, childbearing is the sole purpose for marriage, infertility or childlessness is socially destabilising for couples.

“Infertility carries several stigmas, causes marital disharmony, divorce, suicide, separation, remarriage, social ostracisation and physical violence against women, even when it is a male factor that is responsible.

“These factors increase the chances of spreading HIV/AIDS.’’

While Owing Kogi Workers for Months, Gov. Bello Builds New Mansion for Himself (Photos)

Governor Yahaya Bello

The quality of the edifice being erected by APC chieftain, Yahaya Bello in an austerity period appears to be in sharp contrast with the lives of his people of the confluence state.

Civil servants in Kogi state, both serving and retired, may be grumbling about irregular payment of their entitlements, but Yahaya Bello, the governor, is not building his hopes on their economy.
On Mahmoud Atta street, GRA Okene, the governor is putting finishing touches to his state-of-the-art country home, or mansion rather, which an insider described as “a thing of beauty”.
But there is a snag: residents of the exclusive residential area are complaining about the disruption the 42-year-old governor has brought upon their lives.

The governor is converting the street entrance to his private gate
“He has converted the main street entrance to his private entrance and is creating another entrance for lesser mortals like us,” a resident complained to TheCable.

“A governor converting a public road to a private and exclusive road for himself. This is a big shame.”

Reacting, Kingsley Fanwo, spokesman of the governor, said his principal has made a better provision for the affected residents.
“Some of these issues are not the way we see them. The point is that if he is building a house and the structure is affecting the road network and he is giving the people a better road, they should be grateful,” he told TheCable.

“It’s not as if he is obstructing the road and he is not doing anything about it. It’s not that he is flexing his power as governor. He has been considerate enough to give them a better road.”

Rights group, HURIWA calls for immediate investigation of Imo market killings, threatens to sue Okorocha

.

A Non-governmental organisation- HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has condemned governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state for flouting a subsisting order of an Imo State High Court by forcefully demolishing the Ancient EkeUkwu Market in Owerri leading to many fatalities.

HURIWA said the decision of the Imo State government to proceed with the demolition amounted to the institutionalisation of impunity even as it warned the Imo state governor not to assume that he is bigger than the collective citizens of the State nor is he above the laws as stipulated by the Constitution.

HURIWA accused governor Okorocha of illegal use of armed soldiers and mobile policemen to carry out a simple task of stopping possible breach of peace as a consequence of the controversial demolition of the longstanding market in the heart of Owerri city.

The Rights group said the action by the Imo state governor had been stridently opposed by the indigenes of Owerri who kicked against the plot to demolish the market and successfully secured a pending interlocutory Court’s Injunction to halt the demolition but which has been brazenly disrespected by the All Progressives Congress governor.

The Rights group specifically lamented the undue applications of high handedness by the armed security forces who deployed crude and violent tactics that resulted in the gunning down of unarmed protesters including Children young enough to be Governor Okorocha grandchildren.

HURIWA therefore called for the arrest and prosecution of the killer soldiers and police or else the governor would be held personally liable and dragged before the World’s crimes court to face charges of crimes against humanity.

The Rights group said the killings if not investigated and offenders arrested and prosecuted, then it would forward a petition to the International Criminal Court in The Hague Netherlands.

In a statement by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Director of Media Affairs Miss. Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA deplored the illegal action of the Imo state governor which precipitated social upheavals resulting in the extralegal executions of unarmed protesters by armed soldiers and mobile police deployed at the instance of a man who is in total breach of section 6 of the Constitution which grants the Judicial powers of the State to the Court of competent jurisdictions.

“We are worried by the widening spectre of lawlessness and absolute disregard for the Principle of Rule of law by elected and appointed political office holders.”

HURIWA also affirmed thus: “We condemn the dictatorial and lawless administration of Mr. Rochas Okorocha of APC for violating the sanctity of the Rule of law and thereby occasioning the gross violations of the sanctity of the lives of the citizens of Imo State who were gunned down for only lawfully kicking against the unlawful and criminal acts of Government of Rochas Okorocha”.

“We will take legal notice of these infractions and will report the matter to the International Criminal Court in The Hague Netherlands so governor Okorocha and his lackeys who committed the atrocities in the demolished Owerri township market can be prosecuted for crime against humanity if the Federal government of Nigeria fails to bring these brutes in military uniforms to face the consenquences of their unlawful killings”.

HURIWA said: “We demand that the civil society community in Imo state should also proceed to press charges against identified armed security operatives who committed these daylight extrajudicial killings of protesters who posed no harm to anyone but who were simply ventilating their collective outrage at the unconstitutional act of the current Imo State governor. Those who occupy government posotions and believe that they will be there forever are deluding themselves and the likes of Okorocha must be reminded that political power is ephemeral and that the bloodshed that happened today will not go unpunished particularly for the perpetrators and those who deployed the heavily armed soldiers”

Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer speaks on Nigerian govt’s move to revoke client’s bail

A request by the Nigerian government seeking the revocation of the pro-Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s bail, is “misconceived”, his lawyer has said.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Friday demanded the revocation of Mr. Kanu’s bail which was granted the defendant in April.

The application which was based on 12 grounds of appeal, followed an allegation by the AGF that Mr. Kanu exhibited flagrant disobedience of court orders on his bail conditions.

“Among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant are as follows: “That he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people,” Mr. Malami said in a statement.

“That he should not grant any press interviews, hold or attend any rallies. And that he should file in court medical updates of his health status every month.

“Rather than observing all the conditions, the 1st defendant/respondent in flagrant disobedience to the court order flouted all conditions given by the court. The first defendant has in furtherance to the offence he was charged, inaugurated Biafra Security Service, ” the statement said.

In a reaction to the application, however, Mr. Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, told newsmen on Friday that his client had “successfully challenged the bail conditions referred to by the government”.

“Though we intend to file a formal response to their most misconceived motion, it is my position that it does not lie in the power of the AG to ask for the revocation of the bail granted to my client. The prosecution can’t be seen at the same time as the persecutors.

“We have successfully challenged the bail terms we considered offensive to our clients constitutionally guaranteed rights. So their recent application is belated.
“Section 169 of the ACJA being relied upon by the AG can’t avail the Attorney General absolute power to ask for the revocation of bail. Parties must be heard on the merit by the court, ” Mr. Ejiofor said.

Mr. Ejiofor also said the alleged security outfit created by Mr. Kanu is a “mere group” formed in the exercise of the citizen’s constitutional right.

He added that the group cannot “by any stretch of the imagination” constitute themselves into a security threat.4

“Let the federal government open their case if they have any genuine charge against my client. They are beating about the bush because they have no case against my client,” Mr. Ejiofor said.
Mr. Ejiofor further said the bail granted his client should be viewed in terms of its essence to ensure attendance at court hearings.

“Let me remind the public that the main essence of bail is to ensure that the person affected stands his trial and nothing more.

“Our client is ready to stand his trial but the federal government is not willing to open their case, they are rather interested in keeping my client behind bars which can’t happen again.”

The application filed by Mr. Malami was pursuant to sections 169 and 173 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA.

According to section 169 of the ACJA, the AGF is empowered to make the said demand, in the event where: “circumstances arise which in the opinion of the AGF would justify the court cancelling the bail.

“Where a defendant has been admitted to bail and circumstances arise which in the opinion of the AGF would justify the court in canceling the bail, or requiring a greater amount: a court may on application being made by the Attorney General of the Federation, issue a warrant for the arrest of the defendant and after giving the defendant an opportunity of being heard, may commit him to prison to await trial, or admit him to bail for the same amount”.

In section 173, the court of law is exclusively empowered to act in a similar circumstance.
Section 173: subsection (2) states thus: “the court may, where circumstances appear just (a) vary the order of release of the defendant at any subsequent hearing: (b) at any subsequent stage of the proceedings cause a defendant who has been released on bail to be arrested and committed to prison custody, provided that the judge shall state in his proceedings the reason for the variation of the condition or commit a of the defendant”.

Part of the allegations against Mr. Kanu includes making separatist comments and inciting Igbo natives to refrain from exercising their rights to vote.

Mr. Kanu also spearheaded a sit-at-home protest in the Southeast region on May 30, after he was released.

Saboteurs behind quit notices – Balarabe Musa

Former Kaduna State Governor, Balarabe Musa, has said that “saboteurs” were behind groups issuing quit notices to Nigerians living in some parts of the country.

Musa, who condemned such notices, on Saturday, said that the development was a threat to Nigeria’s unity.

The People Redemption Party leader was reacting to the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra’s reported rejection of the withdrawal of quit notice given to Igbos to leave the north and a fresh quit notice given to Yoruba and Hausa persons resident in the Niger Delta to quit the region before Oct. 1.

“The quit notices are designed to escalate tension in the country and promote disaffection among citizens.
“Clearly, the issuers of such notices are irresponsible groups being backed by some people in their respective regions to issue the notices.

“Such backers are saboteurs ready to undermine the unity of the country for their own parochial ethnic and political interests.

“It is sad that issuance of quit notices to Nigerians resident in other states is now the order of the day.

“The development threatens the unity of the country and the peaceful coexistence of all citizens.

“The groups issuing the threats are not doing that alone. They are actually acting scripts by some people in their regions who are supposed to be leaders.

“These backers are saboteurs who are bent on undermining the unity of the country for their personal and parochial interests,” he said.

The former governor urged the government to take the right steps to arrest the development in the interest of peace and progress.

On the rejection of quit notice withdrawal by IPOB, Musa said that such rejection was not relevant because IPOB could not force Igbos, who had chosen to live in the North, to leave by October 1.

The former governor noted, however, that the northern youth group that issued the quit notice did not have the power to implement their threat.

“All these groups issuing quit notices and threats do not have the powers to do anything.

“They only create tension in the polity and threaten the peace of the country.

“They can’t tell people where to live. They are nonentities who are just claiming an influence they do not have,” he said.

He said that the responsibility to keep the country together was that of every citizen, and urged leaders and politicians to promote peaceful co-existence in their respective regions.

Kano Govt Begins Training Of 6,700 Women

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje

Kano State Government says it will train no fewer than 6, 700 women in various skills under its women empowerment programme.

Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje made this known while flagging off the training in Kano on Saturday.

Ganduje said that the participants, selected from 44 local government areas of the state, would receive training on how to prepare local delicacies and other trades to enable them to be self-reliant.

He said that the training was aimed at empowering women not only to become self-reliant, but to enable them to be employers of labour in their respective communities.

“We believe that if we our empower women, they will be able to establish small businesses and support their families,” he said.

Ganduje said that the beneficiaries would be given a token amount as a start-up capital to enable them to set up businesses of their choice after the training.

The governor said that his administration attached great importance to women empowerment, hence, its decision to give priority to girl-child education.

He urged the participants to make best use of the opportunity to enhance their socio-economic status.

“I have directed all the 44 local government areas to compile list of associations of businesswomen with a view to supporting them to enhance their businesses,” Ganduje said.

In her remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Yardada Bichi, said that the state government had released N101. 8 million for the training of the women in various skills.

Northern Elders Forum meets in Benue, insists on unity of the North

Northern elders representing the Northern Elders Forum decorated with Benue regalia in group picture with Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom (center in white).

The deputy secretary of Northern Elders Forum, Barrister Mustapha Wali has faulted the federal government for not taking drastic steps to nip in the bud the constant conflict between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the country.

Wali who spoke during the courtesy call of the group on Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom on Saturday also requested for details of the anti-grazing law recently introduced by the state government.

He further called on the state government to ensure that the anti-grazing law is treated with human face.

Speaking earlier, leader of Northern Elders Forum, Wataregh Paul Unongo said that the unity of the north is paramount to the group

Unongo led select delegation of Northern Elders Forum on courtesy visit on the state governor, Samuel Ortom.

The new leader said that their meeting is premised with the issues that will bond the north together in the face of daunting challenges confronting the region.

He further said that the leadership of the association fell on him with the demise of Alhaji Maitama Sule and maintained that over the years Benue has been part of the north.

Welcoming the elders into the state, Governor Samuel Ortom thanked the Northern Elders Forum for the support the group has extended to President Muhammad Buhari.

Ortom said that the words of elders are words of wisdom and further charged them to rally support for the president in the task of governance.

The governor however used the opportunity to intimate the elders the reason for initiating the anti-grazing law by his administration.

Ortom said that the wanton destruction of lives and property occasioned by the incessant attacks of herdsmen, prompted the state to come out with anti-grazing law which he said is now a global trend.

According to him, “the introduction of anti-grazing law is aimed to protect lives and property of people of the state including herdsmen, at the time we assumed office we were faced with insecurity particularly, herdsmen’ attack.”

“We tried other areas like series of meeting with herdsmen and farmers, fortified security apparatus in the state yet, there was no positive result, then having travelled far and near and discovered that ranching has become a global trend in curbing conflicts between herdsmen and farmers, we decided to initiate the executive bill.”

“The state assembly also followed due process before its passage, public hearing was done and the herdsmen were in attendance at the end of the day the bill was passed into law.”

FG establishes 6 sickle cell reference centres, says Health Minister

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole

Federal Government has established six sickle cell reference centres in six Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) across the country, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, said on Saturday.

Adewole listed the FMCs as the Federal Medical Centres, Ebute Meta, Lagos; Federal Medical Centre, Keffi and the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.

Others are the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa; Federal Medical Centre, Birnin-Kebbi and Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki.

Adewole, in a statement issued by Mrs Boade Akinola, Director of Media and Public Relations in the ministry, urged health partners to support the government’s efforts in tackling the menace of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The minister expressed his appreciation to the partners, who were working with the Ministry of Health on diabetes care and prevention.

He urged more partners to come on board to join the government in the fight against diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in the country.

“I wish to passionately appeal to all partners to support the ministry to conduct National Survey so as to establish the current prevalence of NCDs for sound policy direction and planning in Nigeria,” Adewole said.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia describes Sickle Cell Disease as “a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person’s parents.

“The most common type is known as sickle-cell anaemia (SCA). It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin (hemoglobin S) found in red blood cells.

“This leads to a rigid, sickle-like shape under certain circumstances. Problems in sickle cell disease typically begin around 5 to 6 months of age.

“A number of health problems may develop, such as attacks of pain (“sickle-cell crisis”), anaemia, swelling in the hands and feet, bacterial infections, and stroke.

“Long term pain may develop as people get older. The average life expectancy in the developed world is 40 to 60 years.’’

Kashamu Is After My Life — Gbenga Daniel, Former Governor Of Ogun State

Former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) has accused the senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Senator Buruji Kashamu of masterminding an assassination attempt on his life and urged the police authorities to put him under security watch list and strict surveillance.
In his immediate reaction however, Senator Kashamu denied the allegation saying the former governor must be hallucinating and afraid of his shadows.
The former governor in his petition to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris said five men who were heavily armed stormed his Abuja residence on Thursday August 24 2017 at about 9.13pm asking for him but he had already left Abuja earlier in the day.
He said the assailants however took to their heels when one of the policemen guarding his house started firing his gun. Otunba Daniel alleged that “this renewed offensive was as a result of the recent Supreme court ruling placing his own faction at a disadvantage and ending the reign of his control over the State Executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun state. It is Kashamu’s belief that I was the brain behind his loss of power and relevance in Ogun State PDP  and he felt I must be brought down by all means.
Denying the allegations, Senator Kashamu in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Austin Oniyokor, said, “It is certain that OGD is hallucinating. He is the accuser, the investigator, prosecutor and judge in his own case. Why would Senator Kashamu go after a man who is at the twilight of his political career? Clearly, OGD is afraid of his shadows.
Otherwise, what would have been expected of sane mind was to report the incident to the Police and allow them to do their job of investigating the incident. But, in this case, because he is desperate to score cheap political point and seek relevance for his dimming political career, he has to raise the false alarm and pin it on someone who does not even care if he exists. In doing this, he has cheapishly assumed the role of the accuser, investigator and prosecutor or judge in his own case”.
