Ex-militants thank Buhari for prompt payment of tuition fees, allowances

Students sponsored by the Office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme in the United States have commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for sustaining the Amnesty Programme and the peace in the Niger Delta region.

A statement by Jimmy Iwezu, leader of the Amnesty Students in the U.S., obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, also dissociated the group from a planned protest at Washington, D.C., on Saturday.

“We wish to express our appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment and dedication to sustainable peace and development in the Niger-Delta through his support and continuation of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

“We also wish to commend the able leadership of Gen. Paul Boroh (rtd) for the positive changes that he has brought to bear on the programme through prompt payment of our fees and allowances.

“While it has not been all rosy, we note that despite the economic recession that Nigeria went through, it was still able to sponsor our education abroad and we are very grateful.”

The statement drew the attention of the public to the activities of those it called “a few faceless fraudsters” in the U.S.

It said the group was allegedly using the social media platform to spread “misleading and mischievous information about our welfare as government-sponsored students in different institutions of higher learning in the United States”.

“We wish to disassociate ourselves from any attempt to tarnish the image of Nigeria in the U.S. through outright lies, falsehood and blackmail being peddled in the social media by a faceless group that has called on people to join them on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, for a public demonstration against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House in Washington DC, USA.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to put it on record that our allowances and tuition fees have been paid up to the month of September, 2017 and the Amnesty Office has promised to pay up to November, 2017 when the next payment is made.”

The students appealed to those they termed “detractors and sponsored saboteurs” to desist from their evil activities of blackmail and distractions against the good job that the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger-Delta has done since 2015.

“We also appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria for the sustainability of the programme, which has achieved its mandate of ensuring peace and stability in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria”.

Mr. Boroh had told NAN that the Amnesty Programme was managing no fewer than 30,000 ex-agitators from the Niger-Delta region.

The presidential aide said the programme, which started in 2009, had sponsored the beneficiaries in various skill acquisition, education and entrepreneurship trainings, among others.

He added that well over 5,000 ex-agitators had benefitted within the past two years in critical areas of aviation, maritime, oil and gas and agriculture.

According to him, the programme has helped greatly to stabilise the Niger Delta region, adding the federal government is consolidating on the achievements to buoy the economy.

Mr. Boroh had also said the Buhari administration was committed to a peaceful and developed Niger Delta region, adding that this commitment had encouraged investors’ movement into the region.

“The impact of the Presidential Amnesty Programme in the Niger-Delta region has been very satisfactory and encouraging because the ex-agitators have imbibed that culture of ensuring peace.

“This is to allow for growth in the region and they are happy about it because a lot of valuable entrepreneurship programmes are ongoing in the entire Niger-Delta region.

“Their (ex-agitators) morale is high and they are happy. Each time I go to discuss with the ex-agitators and the youth, they pledge their loyalty and support to the present administration.

“This is so that the administration can continue the good things it is doing because of the commitment of Mr President in ensuring peace, stability and development in the region.”

Ekwueme: Forget politics, take care of the elder statesman, Ezeibe tells Obiano

A CHIEFTAIN of the People’s Democratic Party,   PDP, Chief Okey Ezeibe has called on the Anambra State governor, Chief Wille Obiano to put political considerations aside and take responsibility for the treatment of the former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme who is on admission in an Enugu hospital following a sudden illness.

Speaking in an interview, Ezeibe said the fact that Ekwueme’s daughter, Mrs. Chidi Onyemelukwe, is the deputy governorship candidate of PDP for the November 18 election in Anambra State, should not make the governor see Ekwueme as a political opponent, arguing that it would even be a credit to him should he step in and take the necessary decision as the governor of Ekwueme’s state despite perceived political differences.

He observed that Obiano had done so well, especially in the area of provision of security in the state and in infrastructural development, noting that neglecting Ekwueme at this point in time would not be to his credit.

According to him, Ekwueme had remained a father figure in the state, recalling that even though he is a member of PDP, he had earlier blessed Obiano for his success in the forthcoming governorship election before his daughter was picked as a running mate to the candidate of PDP, Mr. Oseloka Obaze.

Ezeibe said: “Ekwueme is a legend and an elder statesman. He has never been a controversial person and at the age of 85 years, no one should see him as a political opponent.

“I can tell you that Ekwueme was not privy to his daughter becoming a running mate to the PDP candidate as it was the governor’s opponents that dragged his daughter into the race for political reasons. Even at that, we also know that Ekwueme’s son, Ogochukwu, is a special assistant to Governor Obiano.

“Ekwueme cannot even pose as a threat to any of the candidates in the election as he may not even go out to vote on that day because he regards all the candidates as his children.”

He argued that if the governors of Enugu and Abia states could do something for him during his 85th birthday, there was no reason why his own governor should not lead the way, adding that some of the lapses might have been from some of his aides, who appeared not to understand how to play good politics.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Bubari has approved immediate medical treatment of the former  Vice-President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, outside the country.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Mr. Garba Shehu, the approval followed a brief the President received Friday on the medical condition of the former Vice-President. The approval covers the immediate charter of an air ambulance for the emergency movement and the cost of treatment. President Buhari prays that God will grant the elder statesman speedy recovery.

Maina opens another can of worms in letter to Senate President

EMBATTLED former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has written to Senate President Bukola Saraki a letter in which he claimed that pension funds amounting to more than N3 trillion were trapped in 97 pension offices before he fled the country.
Maina, in the letter dated June 19, 2015, which he wrote shortly after he returned to the country from self-exile, had sought a review of his case and a probe of the various actions taken against him by some people he claimed were bent on intimidating him.

He also accused the 7th Senate of aiding and abetting pension thieves across the country.

The letter addressed to Senator Saraki was titled ‘Pension Reform Task Team: Appeal for Review of Investigation Probe by Senate Joint Committee on Establishment and Public Service and States and Local Government Administration 2011-2013.’

Maina, who recently returned to self-exile following a public uproar against his alleged reinstatement as a director in the Ministry of Interior while he was still wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged embezzlement of N2 billion pension funds, claimed in the letter leaked to newsmen in Kaduna yesterday that his task team, which began operation in January 2011, saved about N1.6 trillion from pension thieves.

“We used financial intelligence skills to achieve ground-breaking achievements in our assignment. We recovered and saved cash and properties worth over N1.6trillion,” he said.

According to him, the team’s efforts led to the arrest of 46 persons and firms involved in looting pension funds, who were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and whose trials were still ongoing.

The more than N3 trillion Maina said was waiting to be recovered from 97 government agencies was as at 2015.

The leaked letter indicated that the pension boss resurfaced in the country shortly after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015.

The letter reads: “We, members of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), wish to use this medium to apologise for our little late response to reaching back to you.
“We had to put the issues together and source for appurtenant materials. We appreciate your understanding sir.

“As a refresher, the PRTT was inaugurated on 10th June, 2010 by the immediate past administration of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, with a clear mandate to restructure the Head of Service Pension Office, Police Pension Office, among others.

“We did our utmost with precision and national interests as our guiding principles

“The PRTT took off effectively by January 2011.

“We used financial intelligence skills to achieve ground-breaking achievements in our assignment.

“We recovered and saved cash and properties worth over N1.6 trillion.

“Our efforts led to the arrest and prosecution of 46 persons/firms involved in looting of pension funds which we handed to the EFCC. The trials are still ongoing.

“As it is, there is a leakage of N256 billion monthly from the current IPPIS, which needs to be blocked urgently.

“We are also aware of some government hidden accounts which needs to be mopped up.

“We can be used to engage any department of government in sanitising the financial workflow to avoid loose ends that remain susceptible to leakages.

“Based on the revelations of massive/monumental fraud and outright stealing of pension funds, which was brought to public attention by the PRTT, the 7th National Assembly by resolution dated 2nd November, 2011 mandated its Committee on Establishment and Public Service, State and Local Government Administration, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the management and administration of pension funds in Nigeria.

“There was general expectation that the various dimensions of irregularities associated with the management of pension funds in Nigeria would come to an end as a consequence of the investigations being conducted by the Senate Joint Committee.”

Maina maintained that the Senate Joint Committee ended up creating more problems than solutions to the endemic corruption and fraud prevailing in the system because while the Senate haunted them, it favoured the “pension thieves”.

“We became objects of corruption fighting us back. From our first appearance before the Senate committee, it was obvious that the entire exercise conducted by the Committee was geared towards discrediting the PRTT,” the letter stated.

Arguing that before leaving Nigeria, following threats to his life, the PRTT had worked so hard that pension payments stabilised, Maina noted that the biometric system adopted by the team exposed 73,000 ghost pensioners in the office of the Head of Service alone.

“Some pensioners got backlog of about 30 years paid into their accounts. All payments were ordered under the signature of the Head of Service monthly,” he said.

He added: “However, the PRTT regrets to observe that rather than achieving the objectives of the spirit and its mandate, which in our view includes but not limited to identifying those responsible for the culture of fraud that characterised the system and bringing them to book, the Senate Joint Committee ended up creating more problems than solutions to the endemic corruption and fraud prevailing in the system.

“In this context, the PRTT, wishes to state without any fear of contradiction that the Senate Joint Committee’s Report submitted, which was subsequently adopted by the 7th Senate but now quashed by the Federal High Court judgement of the 13th March 2013 in favour of the PRTT’s Chairman, not only failed to address the issues at stake but succeeded in misleading the Senate and the generality of Nigerians about the true picture, nature and scope of problems militating against the efficient management and administration of Pension Funds in Nigeria. Copy of said judgement attached and marked “ANNEXURE1”.”

Maina also alleged that shortly after he was forced out, the office of the Head of Service was enmeshed in a N35bn fraud. He added that the ICPC conducted investigation into the matter but regretted that “till date, they are yet to commence the prosecution.”

“Today, it (pension) is worse with the Police pension office where daily so much millions are taken out of pension funds in that office. We have evidence to substantiate this,” he added.

On his dismissal, Maina said the process was concluded under 36 hours without giving him the opportunity to be heard.

The letter said: “As we write to you, Abdulrasheed A. Maina has been dismissed from Civil Service for being absent for three days while his life was under threat following gunshot attack on his person in front of Head of Civil Service Office where his office was located in February, 2013. Attached are copies of letters from Nigeria Police Force. “ANNEXURE 3 (a) and (b)”.

“The Task Team and its leadership were not only denied the opportunity for a fair hearing before being pronounced guilty of all manner of allegations, but even where the Task Team appeared before the Committee, salient facts related to the issues at stake were deliberately ignored.”

He added that an appeal to the 7th Senate for fair hearing was ignored. As a result, the PRTT approached the Federal High Court Abuja in suit number: FH/ABJ/CS/65/2013. He said the court ruled in his favour on 13th March, 2013 noting that till date, the Senate had yet to appeal the judgment of the court.

Maina, in the said letter, said: “We are by this letter appealing to the Federal Government in the spirit of CHANGE which the country is witnessing, and the stand of government on corruption, that opportunity be given to us to present the truth about pension management in Nigeria.”

Reacting to Maina’s letter, the Special Adviser (Media) to the Senate President, Yusuf Olaniyonu, said the present Senate leadership ignored it because the last Senate had taken a decision on the pension matter and there was no reasonable ground to review it.

Benue anti-grazing law: Herdsmen to move 10 million cows to Nasarawa

About 10 million cows belonging to members of the Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria will be moved into Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State from Benue following the enactment of anti-grazing bill by the Benue State Government.

Chairman of MACBAN in the area, Alhaji Musa Muahhed-Mati, who gave this figure in an interview with our correspondent, said two million cows had been moved to Nasarawa as of Friday.

Muahhed-Mati, who expressed worry about the action taken by Benue State government, explained that the association was collaborating with the Nigerian Army, the police and other relevant stakeholders in Nasarawa State to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

He chided Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State for not finding alternative means of grazing for herdsmen before enacting the anti-grazing bill.

He said, “Our major problem is fear of our cows, particularly since farmers have yet to harvest their crops from their farms.

“We are in difficult situation. We are trying our best to ensure that peace reigns between us and the host community in Awe.”

A farmer in Awe, Abigail Bitraus , said she had to quickly rush to her farm to harvest her rice when she heard about the cattle being moved in by the herdsmen; even though, it was not the appropriate time to do so.

She said, “The large number of Fulani herdsmen and their cows scare me. When I learnt that they were relocating from Benue State to Nasarawa State, I had to rush to my farm to harvest my rice.”

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State said he had already set up a committee in all the local government areas adjoining Benue State to monitor the movement and the migration of the Fulani herdsmen, warning that the destruction of farmlands and attacks on homes would not be tolerated.

Lessons my son’s death taught me —Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has thanked Nigerians for their show of concern over the death of his eldest son, Jide.
Thirty-seven-year old Jide died of cardiac arrest in Lagos on Wednesday, following which condolence messages poured into the APC chieftain’s home from President Muhammadu Buhari, state governors, ministers and the generality of Nigerians.

Reflecting on his son’s death and the sympathy it generated from Nigerians in a statement he personally signed yesterday, Tinubu, on behalf of the family, expressed “deep appreciation to all who have demonstrated their sympathy and expressed their condolences over the loss of our eldest son.”

He said: “I want to especially thank President Muhammadu Buhari, VP (Vice President) Yemi Osinbajo, the state governors, distinguished senators, particularly Senate President Bukola Saraki, members of the House of Representatives, APC leaders and members and, indeed, all Nigerians.

“I thank the traditional rulers for their display of support.”

Tinubu said the public reaction to his son’s death had taught him that Nigerians could be “a people of profound love and humanity.”

He said: “We must seek a lesson in every loss. Your reaction to my son’s passing has taught me that we can be a people of profound love and humanity when we want to be.

“People of every tribe, region, faith and every political affiliation have expressed their sympathy and extended to me the embrace of a brother or sister.

“Even those who don’t agree with me politically have shown strong support and care indistinguishable from that of my associates.

“This says so much about the innate goodness in all of us. For no matter what, we are not foes or enemies. We are all of one human stock, a single nation, one family.”

He described his deceased son as a highly intelligent person with a vibrant personality and zest for life, who followed his own course and made his own way on his own terms.

He said: “Those who knew him could not help but like him. Yet, he was taken away by cardiac arrest when it seemed he had so much life to still live.

“This is a reminder that we must live each day to its best, as none of us know when our last day shall be.

“Mortality comes upon us all. We have no choice in that. But we do have a choice whether we shall be good or bad, just or unjust.

“Let us all strive toward the best in ourselves.

“Jide lived for so long in London, and there he has left behind a darling wife and three precious boys.

“My wife Remi and I have gone to London to be with them at this painful time to support and help them.

“Please excuse our absence from Lagos for a while, but it is essential that we are with them.

“Prayers are being offered and will continue to be offered for the repose of his soul.

“I have suffered a grave loss that no parent would like to bear.

“As a father, I must spend time putting my arms around the family he has left behind.

“I wish I could bring my son back but I cannot.
“However, what I can do is to be more caring and helpful to the living as I know this is what Jide would want to become of his passing.

“Let us all take a lesson from this and think a bit more about our fellow man, our neighbor, our fellow Nigeria.
“Let us live as we were meant to live with each other in greater peace, compassion and love.

“If only this can happen, I know my son will be happy.

“Again, as we are away from Lagos, we thank you for the love you have shown and ask that you not only show it to us but to each other.
“Please continue to pray for him wherever you are.

“Thank you and God bless you all.”

Burglar gets stuck in window for five hours in botched break-in

A burglar had to be rescued by police during a break-in – after he got stuck in a window for five hours. The shoeless man – wearing jeans and black socks – had to be retrieved by officers after desperately crying out for help when he got trapped in the tight spot.
A picture taken by West Midlands Police showed the crook with his body half inside the window with his legs dangling out. Shortly after being freed from the window, he was taken into police custody.

Web users were quick to ridicule the would-be burglar on social media. Judith Broug said: ‘trying really hard not to laugh’ And Jim Nicholl tweeted: ‘Another fine mess Stanley. Must feel a right turkey!’ Henry Smith added: ‘This has made my day. What an absolute plonker.’ Lisa Foster wrote: ‘Bet he felt like an absolute idiot. He got everything he deserved being stuck there for that long.’

N23bn Diezani bribe: EFCC invites ex-Kogi governor

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has invited the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, for his alleged role in the disbursement of N23bn which emanated from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.
A senior EFCC operative told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that Wada was invited to explain why he collected the sum and how it was expended.

He said, “We have invited Wada to explain his role in the Diezani fund. He is expected to be at the EFCC next week for questioning.”

Diezani allegedly disbursed $115m (N23bn as of 2015) through the Director of Finance of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.

While Diezani has remained outside the country since 2015, Usman is currently facing trial before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party were said to have received N450m while in some states that had no PDP governors, ministers were given the money to disburse.
The EFCC has so far, grilled over 15 former governors and ministers over the slush fund.
Some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission have also been arraigned for allegedly receiving part of the funds.

2019: I haven’t declared for Presidency - Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that he has formally declared his intention to run for president in 2019.

Atiku said this in a statement by his media office on Friday.

He distanced himself from a video which was circulated on social media in which he was purported to have said he would be contesting.
The former vice-president said the video was a “bad job of bad people with bad intentions.”

He said some mischievous people were using a video clip extracted from his 2011 presidential declaration to create the false impression that he had formally declared for the 2019 presidential election.

He said such propaganda was being deliberately promoted by political opponents in order to create acrimony.
Atiku advised those involved in such “laughable and unintelligent propaganda of lies and intentional mischief to find something useful to do with their time instead of using his name to achieve their malicious political objectives.”

Describing those behind the fake video clip “as a group of incompetent and bumbling political novices who cannot see the loopholes in their own stories,” the former Vice-President advised the media to be wary of “uncritically lapping up fake news materials from groups that don’t care about their own credibility.”

He explained, “While fake news merchants don’t bother about ethics and their reputation”, the media has more to lose if they take stories from such disreputable groups without verification.

The Waziri Adamawa added that spreading false stories about any individual politician is not within the protected boundaries of free speech, and that the traditional media should take the first step by not helping fake news merchants to promote their agenda.

Lagos Govt Halts Lekki Toll Hike As Residents Blast Ambode, LCC

Lagos State government has suspended the proposed tariff hike on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge by the Lekki Concession Company, LCC.

At the Admiralty Circle Plaza (Lekki-Epe expressway) tariff for saloon cars will be N200 from N120; sports utility vehicles will pay N250 from N150; while commercial buses will pay N150 from N80. Motorcycles will pay N100.

At the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, saloon cars will pay N300, from N250; sports utility vehicles, mini vans, and light trucks N400, from N300. Motorcycles will pay N200.

On Friday Steve Ayorinde, Commissioner for Information, in a statement, noted that the state government had directed the company to put the decision “on hold” as the necessary consultations with stakeholders are yet to be concluded.

“While government recognises the need for periodic review of tariffs and any other levies appertaining to road infrastructure maintenance in the state, the public and critical stakeholders as the ultimate beneficiaries of such facilities must always be carried along at all times,” he said.

“Therefore, the proposed tarrif hike cannot be effected at this period in the interest of the public, while further consultations continue.”

Already, thousands of Lagosians have signed an online petition to protest the plan billed to take effect on November 8.

The online petition, initiated by Ngozi Ihedigbo, said the LCC, imposed the “increment on us with absolutely no explanations.”

“Nigeria is a country in recession, people have no jobs and the ones with jobs can hardly survive on their salaries,” the petition began.

“Yet all the government is doing is impose hardship on innocent people for their selfish gain. There is no reason why there should be an increase on the Lekki-Victoria Island toll and we need this action to be stopped.

“We can no longer sit and fold our arms and say ‘it’s business as usual.’ We pay taxes, even though we do not see any major improvements to quantity these payments. We are our own government as we provide our own water, light and in most cases our road. Yet all the government does is take, take and take from us.

“The Lekki-VI fare should actually be going down, rather there is a 70 per cent increase in toll fee starting November 8th 2017. Did anyone get a 70 per cent raise on salary? Did Nigeria inflation go up by 70 per cent? ”

Lagosians react:

Meanwhile, Lagosians on the Twitter reacted angrily to the proposed hike.
They took a swipe at Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and LCC, accusing them of insensitivity.

Olayinka Awoyemi‏ @OlayinkaMGmedia: Nigerian Government always so insensitive about everything. Lekki toll increment another blunder. Poor Ambode.

H.O.N.‏ @MrNosegbe: Ambode has (correctly) calculated that increasing the Lekki toll fare, like the carnage at Otodo Gbame, will not incur any political costs.

Babs‏ @BabatundeCASH: LCC wants to increase Lekki toll gate tariffs. Maybe Gov. Ambode is a scam after all.

Miwan‏ @_JohnME_: What kind of shit is Ambode pulling? What’s with the near-100% tariff increment at both the Lekki and Ikoyi toll gates?

Pompom‏ @No1chick: Tested my new route from Lekki to VI today and now it’s familiar. Ambode and his family can kiss my ass with their toll increase.

Vice-Chancellor‏ @WaleVcAdeNiyi: change in Lekki toll tarrif despite very poor service. Nigerians must resist this. We are not destined to suffer

Obinna Okerekeocha‏ @obitalks: @LCCTollRoad it would be nice for you to enlighten us why there’s a 70% increase in the #Lekki Toll gate fare. This is so arbitrary!!!

Nnamdi hayes‏ @colourMebadHaze: Na wa…toll gate fee in lekki gonna increase to 250? wawuu

Uchenna aniesi‏ @UAniesi: It’s unfair to increase the fair at this time that the country is tough.

Ikponmwosa Olotu‏ @iOLOTU: We will be a protesting against the LCC toll increase. This is extortion. Please spread the word #StopLCCTollExtortion. This affects all.

MTO‏ @Mofe_TO: N400 for toll gate. N800 for return trip to ikoyi from lekki. Nuts!

Joseph‏ @Josephkingsize: How could they increase the lekki toll gate….are we going to be silent? Am going for a protest, please people let’s do this.

Ismail Abiade‏ @AbiadeIsmail: Now that #lekki toll gate fees have been increased, public transport operators would increase transport fares too.

Cinderella Man‏ @Osi_Suave: LCC well done o. That lekki epe expressway is still shit. Yet you think its ok to increase tolls.

Anike Lawal‏ @AnikeLawal: Was just complaining this week about the monthly amount I spend on toll fees. Now LCC has announced a new toll increase

The mainland is beginning to look more attractive. This economic slavery is becoming too much.

Presidency fires back at Buhari’s critics over Lawal, Oke

Femi Adesina, media adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, has risen in stout defence of his boss over criticisms trailing the sack of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal and ex-Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke.

Adesina’s response is contained in an article he release on Friday titled, ‘PMB: Just like the mills of the gods’.

Adesina wondered why some Nigerians were directing attacks at Buhari, despite the action he took on the duo.

According to him, the president took his time on the matter, because “better that 100 criminals escape, than kill a single innocent man unjustly”.

He wrote: “On Monday, this week, the Engr Babachir David Lawal and Amb. Ayo Oke saga came to a denouement. The duo had been accused of some unsavoury acts, and sent on suspension in April, this year. A panel was constituted to look into the allegations against them, with a two-week time frame”.

“A day before the report of the panel was to be submitted, President Buhari had to travel abroad on the second leg of a medical vacation. He was away till August 19.
In this period, some impatient Nigerians were totally restive.

“They even besieged the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, urging him to act on the report of the panel. They wanted to turn the man into jury and judge, discountenancing the fact that he had chaired the panel that conducted the probe.

“When President Buhari mercifully returned on August 19, his plane had barely touched down, when the impatient people began to ask for the report of the Osinbajo panel. “The two most powerful warriors are patience and time,” wrote Leo Tolstoy. But such people would have none of it. They called for an immediate decision on the lingering saga.

“On August 23, VP Osinbajo submitted the report, in six hefty volumes. Of course, there was an executive summary, as best practices would demand. And the noise continued from some quarters. We want action on the submitted report, and we want it NOW.

“They forget that “patience is not simply the ability to wait, it’s how we behave while we are waiting” (says the preacher, Joyce Meyer). And they also forget the mills of the gods, which grind slowly, but exceedingly finely.

“They went forward to accuse the President of treating Nigerians with contempt. With scorn. Derision. Flippancy. Levity. They would rather justice had been miscarried, as long as the urge for blood was satiated.
“They would rather the President had played to the gallery, swinging the sword and decapitating everyone in sight, not minding whether they were innocent or guilty.”

How Buhari Rejected Motion To Endorse Him For Second Term At APC NEC

Femi Adesina, media adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that his principal personally rejected the motion to endorse him for 2019 during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in an article he release on Friday titled, ‘PMB: Just like the mills of the gods’.

Adesina lamented how the media made it look as though Buhari was embarrassed at the meeting.

He insisted that it was Buhari himself who signalled to those in attendance that the meeting should not talk about his 2019 ambition.

Adesina wrote: “I was there (APC NEC meeting). The atmosphere was friendly, almost convivial. At a point, someone moved a motion of confidence in the Buhari administration.

“The seconder, a former state governor, added to the motion, seeking an endorsement of the President as candidate for second term in 2019. As he raised the motion, I saw the President gesturing, with his two palms downwards.

“The gesture meant, please, cool down, not now. This is premature. And the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, weighed in, accepting the motion of confidence, and deferring the one on automatic candidacy. Everyone was satisfied.

“You can imagine my consternation the next day, when I saw the newspaper headlines. It was as if some of them were reporting a meeting held in outer space.

“They said a bid by governors to get automatic ticket for the President had failed. One newspaper exulted: “Govs’ bid to get automatic 2019 ticket for Buhari fails.’ Pure fiction. Concocted story. It never happened the way the newspaper had conjured.

“And it was the President himself who had dissuaded those who made the move, by his gesture. Hate news seems to have crept into the polity, and otherwise credible newspapers have eaten the forbidden apple.
“Under President Buhari, for Nigeria, the storm will pass (and is, indeed, passing), and the spring will come. The mills of the gods grind slowly, but exceedingly finely. I believe. What about you?”

NNPC commences move to mobilize for Oil exploration in the Benue State sector of the Benue Trough.

Following the flag-off of oil search on the Nasarawa  State end of the Benue Trough last week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commenced move to mobilize for oil exploration in the Benue State sector of the Benue Trough.

The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti KacallaBaru, who led a high-powered delegation from the Corporation to the Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom, disclosed that all was set for seismic data acquisition work to commence in the state.

Dr. Baru also disclosed that apart from oil exploratory work, NNPC was also ready to kick-off its biofuel project located in the Agasha/Guma area of the state.

He explained that the Corporation’s upstream company, Integrated Data Services Ltd (IDSL), would carry out  oil exploratory work in Makurdi, Guma, Gwer East, Gwer West and Logo Local Government Areas of the state, adding that work on the Nasarawa end which has commenced would cover the Ondori area (boundary between Benue and Nasarawa States).

“I am convinced that the success of the results from IDSL’s seismic data acquisition will lead to the drilling of exploration wells in these areas, which hopefully, would launch Benue state into the league of oil producing states in the country,” Dr. Baru stated.

He stated that the oil search was in fulfillment of the Presidential mandate of exploring for oil in the nation’s inland basins which was driven by the urgent need to increase Nigeria’s oil and gas reserves, thereby improving revenue streams and creating more business and employment opportunities for Nigerians.

The GMD informed that the NNPC team was in Benue to sensitise the government and people of the state on the mission.

On the biofuel project, Baru disclosed that when completed, Benue state stood to benefit a lot especially the area of employment generation as the project had the capacity to generate about one million direct and indirect jobs.

According to the GMD, other benefits of the biofuels project include the a sugar cane feedstock plantation of about 20,000 hectares; a cane mill and raw/refined sugar plant capable of producing 126,000 tonnes annually as well as a fuel-ethanol processing plant capable of producing 84 million litres annually.

“With the bio-fuels projects, we also hope to establish the Bagasse cogeneration power plant which will generate 64 MW; a carbon dioxide recovery and bottling plant that will produce 2, 000 tonnes annually as well as an animal feed plant that will produce 63, 000 tons annually,” Dr. Baru added.

The GMD also called on the governor to facilitate the release of the Certificate of Occupancy for the 50,000 hectares of land required for the expanded biofuels project in the state.

Responding, Governor Ortom expressed delight over NNPC’s oil exploration and bio-fuels projects in the state, adding that all the people of Benue were behind the two projects.

“I can assure you of our total support for these projects. We will work with our traditional institutions to sensitise our people on the need to massively support you,” Governor Ortom told the GMD.

To show Benue state’s support for the project, Governor Ortom instantly set up a committee headed by the Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu, to work with the NNPC team to ensure seamless execution of the two projects.

It would be recalled that only yesterday, the NNPC, in furtherance of the Federal Government’s biofuel policy, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ondo State Government to establish a 65,000 million litres per annum biofuel plant in Okeluse area of the state.

Man, 20, shot and stabbed future mother-in-law to death then went out to dinner with his fiancée

A Ohio man brutally stabbed and shot his future mother-in-law to death before going to dinner with his future father-in-law at the restaurant where his fiancée worked.
Police say Jeffrey Scullin Jr, 20, shot and stabbed Melinda Pleskovic to death on the night of October 23. Then the callous killer joined Pleskovic’s husband for dinner at the Applebees where his fiancée, the victim’s daughter, worked.

After returning from dinner, Scullin called 911 to say he found Pleskovic dead in a pool of blood.

Scullin was arrested after police searched his truck and found a tactical knife with traces of Pleskovic’s blood on it. More blood was found on the inside passenger door handle of the 2002 Chevy pickup truck.

Police say Schullin was cool as a cucumber in the days after the murder, even volunteering as pallbearer at the victim’s funeral.

Scullin was arranged on Friday morning and charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Police did not reveal a motive for the murder.

A judge set his bond at $1 million.

Nigeria not out of recession, everyone including me is broke – Duke mocks Buhari’s govt

Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, yesterday mocked the Buhari government for rejoicing over Nigeria’s ‘exit’ from recession.

Duke, who said he’s broke, also advised the administration to work harder, stating that the masses were yet to feel the development.

“Just because it is easier for goods to pass through the port…that’s no big deal,” he said at the official launch of the National Competitiveness Report and Sub National Index held in Lagos.

“The point is what does each one of us add to the general well-being of the country. Most folks in Nigeria are parasitic.

“You walk on the streets and people in the prime of their lives are hawking plantain chips if they are lucky to find something to hawk.

“We, the few privileged, sit in our cars, our windows wound up, and pretend to look at our phones because we don’t want to see the reality out there.

“This country, for instance, has to grow at about 15 per cent annually, not in Lagos, but nationally, for the next ten years, to absorb the numbers that are out of the economy. We are self-deceptive. We say that unemployment is 15 per cent.

“In other words, out of every 100 only 15 have no jobs. I think it is the other way round; only 15 have jobs and the rest 85 are living off the 15. The question is how long can that go on?

“Then we sit down and say that inflation is 16 per cent. How do you arrive at that? I know I’m broke. So if inflation is too much money in circulation, where is this money?

“The truth is too few people have too much money. If you re-circulate resources properly, and I am not being socialist here (all you need to do is to create jobs for people), then you’ll find that it will reflect on the economy.

“So what we are doing is to run a goodwill economy; 85 percent of the economy is depending on the goodwill of the 15 percent.”

Duke further advocated for a policy he described as SHIT (Skills, Health, Infrastructure and Technology).

“I don’t use education any longer because education is beyond reading and writing. Education without the set skills that make you productive is hollow,” he said.

“We are ridiculously spiritual because we live purely by the grace of God. Yes, we all do, but heaven helps those who help themselves. If you are afflicted here by a disease today, your chances of survival are 50:50.
“The drugs for common diseases are not even manufactured here. So we have a loss of productivity that we have not addressed at all.”

Ambode: A quiet but virtuoso performance

In his 27 years as a civil servant in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode was a quiet, solid achiever of immense gifts and remarkable ethos. With a bachelor’s and master’s in Accounting, he was focused early enough to start his working career from the modest position of Assistant Treasurer, Badagry Local Government in 1988. Nearly three decades later, and after a number of courses within and outside the country, the brilliant and hard working civil servant had risen to the positions of a permanent secretary and accountant-general, even holding both positions at a time. His accomplishments were staggering; but what was even more astonishing was the quiet manner he rose through the ranks and left a lasting impact.

It was, therefore, not surprising that less than three years after he voluntarily retired from the civil service, and with the same quiet dignity and self-effacement that have become his hallmarks, Ambode, 53, was back in government, this time at the highest level in Lagos State as its third Fourth Republic elected governor. It is not certain, despite his hard work and accomplishments, whether he thought that amazing political trajectory possible. It is not even clear, though he has great mentors, whether a year before he assumed office as governor, anyone thought to make a political gladiator of the self-effacing financial and administrative manager.

Twenty-nine years after he first signed up to work for the Lagos State government, through which he rose to be a consummate civil servant and adept financial manager, Ambode had become governor in extraordinary circumstances. He was indisputably sound as an auditor and accountant, even a chartered accountant, but not many, including perhaps some who voted for him in 2015 on trust, were absolutely convinced that the seemingly quiet and unpretentious financial expert and latter-day politician could muster the elan and charisma to lead the boisterous coastal state soon to mark its fifty years of founding.

Ambode had come highly recommended by a past governor, the pacesetting iconoclast, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And having excelled in school, he had acquired the character of showing grit, determination and uncommon brilliance. But he did not seem a natural politician, not to talk of being a lawyer and career rabble-rouser — these were the sort of people believed capable of succeeding as administrators and politicians. Ambode was different, confidently and quietly so. But he was not the usual politician Lagosians had grown accustomed to over the decades. Indeed, shortly after he was sworn into office, the most populous state in Nigeria seemed to experience some stasis, unable to respond to the new governor’s novel methods.

But less than two remarkable and astounding years later, after Ambode had executed dozens and dozens of quality and, in some instances, expansive projects one after another, it was as if the state had been waiting for him all along with bated breath. Both Ambode and Lagos were made for each other, after all. He has not yet forsworn his self-effacement, and is unlikely to, given his quiet and self-confident disposition, yet his achievements have both been recognised and lauded, often very loudly, as if to compensate for his quietude.

Charisma is not usually associated with quiet detachment; but in the case of Ambode, his achievements have illustrated his sometimes impalpable charisma. And as every analyst knows, it is indeed possible to possess charisma without a corresponding or even ethical demonstration of progress. Ambode defies stereotypes and confounds propositions by his relentless and ironically charismatic accomplishments.

Far beyond the number and quality of Ambode’s monumental projects is the scientism of his methods, the integrated network of projects and programmes that blend with one another and create a seamless, impactful whole. Whether road projects or school and health facilities, or whether security or human development programmes, Ambode’s strides in two years possess at once a certain abstractness and concreteness. Abstractness because many of the projects seem enviably and reassuringly futuristic; and concreteness because they are of practical and immediate use as tools for rewing up development and raising living standards.

It would be flattering to suggest that Lagos has a perfect cabinet. It probably doesn’t. However, given the achievements recorded in the past two years, and the peace and cooperation abiding in the cabinet, they are a reflection of the cerebral quality of the governor and his leadership skills as well as an indication that he has a critical mass of commissioners and heads of agencies to help him transform theory into practice. Importantly too, as is the nature of politics generally, the remarkable progress Lagos has made under Ambode reflects excellently on his interpersonal relations and financial management skills.

No matter how brilliant a cabinet, if the leader is not equally or better endowed, there would be no one to set the pace and direction. If Lagos is presenting itself as an example for other states and attracting attention from within and outside the African continent, it is an indication that a vision is in place and is being remoulded and refined, and a leader possessing character and confidence is also running the show.

What is most remarkable about the solid and frenzied pace of development in Lagos today is its spread, both spatially and intrinsically. Spatially, projects are sited in concentric circles in all the senatorial districts of the state, state constituencies, and wards. And in one way or the other there is an engaging interconnectedness in nearly al\ the projects so that they can integrate forward and backward and hum synergetically to make life liveable in the Lagos megacity. Intrinsically, ongoing projects include roads, bridges, hospitals, security apparatuses, and many legacy monuments. The Epe axis is being opened up grandly, Alimosho axis is being transformed into a behemoth, Oshodi is on the way to experiencing one of the most modern renewals ever, Lekki is enjoying a very thoughtful design makeover, and a new security architecture called neighbourhood security watch is already assembled.

All these renewals and re-engineering have been made possible because they were predicated on a masterful re-engineering of the state’s financial infrastructure. It is perhaps fitting that Ambode is in the saddle as the state marks 50, having been created in May 1967. He is fortunate to have predecessors like AsiwajuTinubu who laid the foundation, and Babatunde Raji Fashola who built on that foundation. Ambode has placed himself appropriately to build on the works of his predecessors, and to take the megacity. Project to a dizzying height. As a former civil servant, he knows how to drive the civil service and get the best out of it. As a career financial manager, he has reorganised the state’s finances and put it on an even keel to make it work for the state. As a thinker and scholar, he has designed practical and engaging ways to get things done and make the state and himself respond adequately like a scientist to the challenges of statehood. And like a deep thinker, he has primed himself, standing on the shoulders of his predecessors, to envision an incredibly expansive, surefooted and glorious future for Lagos.

That Ambode is able to achieve these great strides without the accompanying and distractive noisemaking politicians are so often and clearly besotted to is a testimony to his idiosyncratic resolve to leave a mark and legacy in Lagos. He is just half way into his first term. By the end of the first term, and at the rate he is going, not to say the fluidity of hisrhythm, he is expected to accomplish so much more, even as many of the legacy projects begun months back start to manifest in all their splendour. Lekki Expressway has been transformed, including a flyover at Ajah. Epe-Itoikin Expressway is nearing completion, so also the Abule Egba flyover. A number of other flyovers are in the works. More than 600km of roads have been rehabilitated or reconstructed. So too, have bridges been built. What is even more impressive is that it takes a very self-confident politician who will be facing re-election in less than two years to eschew the self-promotion and narcissism many politicians and governors are obsessed with. Under Ambode, Lagos is permanently in the works, aggressively and thoughtfully.

Sometimes, all it takes is a lay-by of not more than half a football field in Oworonshoki or Ketu. But it does wonders for traffic flow. Sometimes, all it needs is erasure of roundabouts, and traffic grid lock is eliminated. The beauty of the Ambode revolution coursing through the state’s sinews is that brain works, after all, and reflectiveness can go a long way in ameliorating the problems of a community. Today, there is no contention about Ambode’s capacity to govern exceptionally well.

If the sometimes querulous leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (POP) in Lagos, Bode George, could give Ambode not only a pass mark, but an excellent mark, all that the governor needs is to sustain hisperformance and probably better it in order to pass safely into the legend of Lagos where only a few past governors reside. Imagine the poeticalness of a quiet governor undertaking a quiet but unmistakable revolution. It is called virtuoso.

The clincher for many Lagosians and south-westerners is that far beyond working wonders in Lagos State is that Governor Ambode is also deeply thoughtful, philosophical and deologically expansive. His pursuit of regionalisation, where his predecessor had been fairly isolationist, speaks to his mindset as a true and well-bred son of the soil. He did not wait to be persuaded; and did not ask to be wooed. His instincts told him regionalism was right and did not detract from the state’s independence nor violated the constitution, nor yet flouted the unity and integrity of the nation. More importantly, he selflessly prepared his mind to put the vibrant economy of Lagos at the service of the region, knowing full well that the strength of his people and their security depend on the collective prosperity of the region. No sooner he was sworn in than he asked to be integrated into the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) There is no telling what six more years of Ambode will do for Lagos and the Southwest. He has started well, worked well, thought well, and from all indications, will finish well. The energies he brings to the job, and the organised and orchestrated ideas that undergird his stewardship, not to say the soundness of his visions, will ensure that the projects he has committed himself to, whether Atlantic City, Fifth Mainland Bridge, Dubainisation of Alimosho, renewal of Ikeja Business District and the rapid metamorphosis of the Lekki Axis, among other great developments, will permanently change the landscape of Lagos.

The tender and tough amiability of Governor Ambode is powerful. The extraordinary elements intrinsic to his glorious élan infused the future of Lagos State Government with great promise, and her present with the illumination of commanding graces. But it is his splendid gravitas that sparked simple things as street lights to sparkle, brighten and pulsate, inviting tourist and tempting global investors.

Every dimension of life in Lagos State is now joyous and anchored to the ardour and glamour of internationalist cordiality of vibrant cultures that enliven refreshing and perpetual hope. The peoples of Lagos State, assuredly, tender to the hugely cerebral Governor Akinwunmi Ambode Immeasurable gratitude for his steady, magnetic and winning leadership skills, and his delightful brilliance that has invigorated us all with joy and magnified the global stature of our precious homeland.
