Female journalist emerges Labour party guber candidate in Anambra

Mrs. Oluchukwu Ajulufo, a journalist who worked with Ray Power (Daar Communications), has emerged the governorship candidate of Labour Party for the Nov. 18, governorship election in Anambra.

Ajulufo was nominated by unanimous vote of the 64-man delegate at the primary election in Awka on Saturday.

Ajulufo is the second female to emerge as governorship candidate after Mrs Kate Okafor of African Conscience Democrat (ACD).

The National Chairman of Labour Party, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who declared Ajulufo winner of the primary, expressed satisfaction with the process.

According to him, two persons participated in the exercise, one did not meet up with the electoral guidelines while the other person, who met the guideline has been declared as the party’s candidate.

Abdulsalam, who described Ajulufo’s emergence as a “divine mandate”, also expressed confidence that the party will win the Nov. 18 governorship election.

While soliciting the support of party faithful, the national chairman urged aggrieved persons to file petition which he said will be looked into critically.

“We are ideological and social democrats and we do not impose candidate or carry out selective justice,” he said.

In her remarks, Ajulufo commended the exercise and Labour party for accommodating a female candidate.

“If elected, I will ensure security of lives and property, employment opportunities for youths and women and robust agricultural programmes to make the state food basket of the nation, among others.”

However, Mr Okey Enemuo an aspirant at the primary and former House of Representatives member expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the exercise, describing it as “laughing stock”.

“As far as I am concerned, no primary election held today.

“Throughout the time I prepared for this primary and all through my campaigns in the wards, no one showed up to contest against me.

“I was supposed to be the consensus and only candidate but what we saw today is laughable.

“Ajulufo never declared interest; otherwise, she should show evidence of payment for forms.

“Besides, she is still a member of the national executive of the party who has not even resigned her position. This is unethical and illegal,” Enemuo said.

Benue blames media for non-development of state

Benue State Governor< samuel Ortom

The Benue government said on Saturday that incessant attacks hurled through the social media were painting the state in bad light and discouraging investors from patronising it.

“The social media attacks have been very severe; they paint Benue in bad light and discourage investors from coming in,” Mr Lawrence Onoja Jr., Commissioner for Information and Orientation, said in Makurdi.

Onoja Jr. said that the negative comments posted on the social media were “mischievous tales” targeted at discouraging investors from investing into government’s agriculture-driven industrialization.

“Sometimes what you read in the social media amazes one; how can one deliberately plant lies just to pull down his own state government and stall its growth?

“`The situation is regrettable and simply sad. Government works very hard, but its opponents keep discrediting it,” he fumed.

He, however, said that the Gov Samuel Ortom-led administration would not be discouraged by “such mischief makers and rumour mangers”.

The commissioner said that government was planning an Information Summit that would deal with the menace of the social media and tackle rumour mongering.

Onoja Jr. said that government was transparent in its financial transactions, adding that all contracts had always followed due processes.

“Government has nothing to hide; it is laughable to allege that the governor awards contracts to himself. Contracts are discussed and endorsed by the State Executive Council.

“The governor vets all expenditures; he is strict and there is no way he can award contracts to himself. The executive council directs the ministries and payments are done through the Ministry of Finance,” he explained.

The commissioner commended the federal government for the massive campaign against hate speech, and called for a more critical look into social media content to rid Nigeria of divisive comments.

Notorious Cow Thieves Caught And stri*ped Na-ked In Benue (Photos)

A Facebook user identified as Patrick Peresio Barnabas, has taken to the social media to narrate how some cow thieves who normally trigger herdsmen attacks, were stri*ped n*ked after being apprehended in Gbajimba, Benue State.

Here’s what he wrote;

Cow thief’s (rustler’s) apprehended in Gbajimba Town, Guma LGA, Benue State.
They have been in the business for a long time.
This are some of the problems that lead to Fulani’s invading communities, killing innocent people since they cannot identify the thief’s.
Luck ran out of them this time as this is the eight (8) cow going missing in the town, we are at peace because all the cows stolen this year belongs to natives and some strangers (not Fulani’s).
Some people are working hard to live a decent life, to feed their families while some are just busy stealing the sweat of others.

Super Eagles to receive N20 million from Buhari for trashing Cameroon 4-0

Youth and Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung, has applauded Nigeria’s Super Eagles for their massive 4-0 triumph over visiting Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

The Senior men’s national team will receive N20million Naira for the 4 goals scored, after the federal government promised to reward every strike with N5million during a pep talk before the game. Barrister Dalung thanked the Nigeria Football Federation and the team for not letting Nigerians down knowing the importance of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia next year.

“The Nigeria Football Federation has been on its toes to ensure that he Super Eagles qualify for the next World Cup.

You worked very hard for this victory and Nigerians are proud of you for always raising the flag when it matters most. “We know the consequences of not being at the World Cup in Russia in 2018. We determine the pulse of African sports and set the tune and agenda for Africa in global sports so it is very key and critical to us.

Moreover, the absence of Nigeria at any international competition always denies the world of the pattern, style and tradition of the Nigerian variety of football so we will be going to Russia with another different pattern and style of football.” The Minister called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to continue to support the players with their prayers and objective criticisms. “The federal government will continue to support our players because they have been making so many sacrifices for the country.

There is nothing we can do to compensate them for what they have done except to continue to appreciate and celebrate them in this critical journey to Russia. Nigeria now top Group B with 9Pts and will face Cameroon again on Monday at the Stade Omnispirts Ahmadu Ahidjo in Yaoundé at 6pm.

CACOL reveals atrocities committed during pilgrimage

The Executive Chairman of CACOL, Mr. Debo Adeniran, has revealed some of the atrocities being committed in the name of pilgrimage to Mecca and Jerusalem.

Adeniran in a statement issued on Friday, described the state sponsorship of the yearly pilgrimage as a form of corruption, which must be stopped forthwith.

He said, “There are so many atrocities various administrations have been committing, including the sponsorship of pilgrimage. Such atrocities start from lowering the exchange rate for pilgrims.

“There is no government that has the authority to spend public funds on frivolities like religious tourism. Nigeria doesn’t have any religion, so any public fund spent on religious activities, building religious worship places and so on are resources wasted, misspent, misappropriated.

“Every public office holder who has funded any religion has misappropriated resources and they are liable to be charged for misappropriation of funds.

“So, the amount that is being expended on Hajj would have been able to fix some dilapidated roads, educational facilities, and so on. What is the country benefiting from religious pilgrimages and all that?

“We are only improving the economies of countries such as Saudi Arabia and Israel while we are spending our resources unwisely. This is wasteful, unnecessary and reprehensible. Nigeria should stop it once and for all and that should be the focus of the present administration because putting money in things that are not right is misappropriation of funds. It is corruption and should be stopped.”

The President of the Muslim Congress, Nigeria, Dr. Lukman Abdurraheem, also described state sponsorship of the Hajj exercise as fraudulent.

He said it was wrong to use taxpayers’ money to send people on pilgrimage, adding that most states were using the exercise to steal state resources.

He said, “We believe that state sponsorship of Hajj is a fraudulent practice. If you go by what the Holy Quran says, we should only visit Kaaba (a building at the centre of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) if we have the means to do so.

“The government doesn’t have to sponsor Muslims on Hajj; its role is to provide good roads, electricity, potable water and other social amenities. States are only using pilgrimage sponsorship to steal money. Any religious person will tell you it’s wrong to use taxpayers’ funds to send people on pilgrimage. That’s why I commend states like Lagos for stopping it.”

PDP'S SECRET PLANS FOR 2019

Defectors, hoping to achieve their presidential ambition on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) in the 2019 elections, may be in for a raw deal.

The PDP, according to top level sources, may shut its doors against presidential aspirants crossing from rival parties.

Some presidential aspirants from outside the PDP have been feeling the pulse of the party on their chances.

It was also learnt that PDP leaders are close to reaching a consensus on giving the vice presidency to the South East.

In return, the South East caucus has opted to forego any aspiration for key positions in the National Working Committee( NWC).

The only position the South East is seeking in the NWC is the National Organizing Secretary.

The office of National Chairman has been zoned to the South West, according to investigation. These secret deals are the highlights of the horse-trading that has been going on in the party over the last few weeks.

It was learnt that the PDP has been working on a formula which will re-integrate all parts of the country.

The “secret deals” seem to have been borrowed from the winning strategy of the defunct National Party of Nigeria( NPN) which ruled the country from 1979 to 1983.

A highly-placed party source told The Nation that PDP leaders “have been engaging in horse-trading in the past few weeks ahead of our next elective National Convention.

“These leaders have built some consensus on power sharing, including the shutting of our doors against defectors from other parties who are only interested in our presidential ticket.

“As an integrated party, we welcome defectors, but we may not concede an automatic presidential ticket to any of them. We want all those joining our party to learn the ropes and queue for a while.

“We believe in party discipline and supremacy; members must have faith in the party they are joining. No chance for gold diggers again.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “As part of the secret deals, it is taken for granted that the presidential ticket will go to the North. It is the candidate we are left with.

“As for the vice presidency, the consensus so far is in favour of the South East in order to address the marginalization of the Igbo. The PDP’s focus is on the unity and reintegration of this country. We want to create a sense of belonging for all.

“We have also discovered that giving the VP slot to the Igbo may solve the latest recourse to separatist agitations in the country.”

The source said “although the South South is serious in its demand for the VP slot, the fact that the geopolitical zone recently completed a five-year presidency in 2015 gives the South East an advantage.”

The source added that party leaders are also trying to “persuade the South South to have a rethink. We will skew the power formula in a manner that the zone may produce the President of the Senate and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or other leverage appointments.

“These are some of the ongoing secret deals in order to give the APC a good fight in 2019. All the six geopolitical zones will get a fair deal.

“The formula being worked out is similar to that of the defunct NPN and a little blend of former Social Democratic Party( PDP) which won the annulled 1993 presidential poll.”

On the fate of the South West, the source added: “The zone is certainly producing the National Chairman of the party with other juicy appointments on the cards.

“It is left to the leaders of the party in the South West to present a credible choice which will lead the PDP to victory in 2019.

“The National Convention will ratify the power sharing formula in December. We are not going to leave anything to chances.”

Some stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been rumoured to be interested in defecting to the PDP to fulfil their presidential aspiration in 2019.

Also, the fate of some PDP leaders to be either President or Vice President or National Chairman may have been subtly foreclosed.

Those allegedly jostling or pencilled down /recommended for the VP ticket in the PDP include Governor Nyesom Wike, Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu, ex-Governor Donald Duke and ex-Governor Godswill Akpabio.

For the National Chairman of the party, those being touted are ex-Ondo State military governor, Chief Olabode George, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, ex-Governor Liyel Imoke and a former National Organizing Secretary of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus.

With the ongoing horse-trading, the presidential ambition of Governor Ayo Fayose appears threatened.

The source said: “Fayose’s candidacy cannot fly at all. He is only trying to enrich the selection process. To us, he is merely playing to the gallery by exercising his fundamental rights to aspire to any political office and contest.”

FRANK EDOHO WILL NO LONGER BE THE HOST OF WWTBAM

During the week, it was announced that popular family game show, Who Wants To Be A Million would be back on air with a new sponsor, Airopay .

An organiser of the show revealed that they did not have any problem with Edoho, so it was an amicable agreement.

“ The only difference about the show is that the star prize money has reduced from N10 m to N 5 m. Also , it is very likely that we are not going to use Frank Edoho as our anchor . We are not dropping him because we had any issue with him . I think he feels it is time to go and find other endeavours .

“ For now , our viewers would only be able to play on the MTN platform till we are able to sort out ways whereby they can play from any network provider and that would be resolved very soon . We are under no obligation to play on the MTN platform alone . Airopay is thrilled to partner with Ultima Limited , whose passion and dedication to quality and world class productions are well known , by sponsoring the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Nigeria game show. Airopay is honoured by this partnership. Airopay and Ultima are convinced that the synergy between Airopay and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire game show will be mutually beneficial , ” the source said .

'MY SON WANTED TO BECOME A REVEREND FATHER', MOTHER OF 10-YEAR OLD OWERRI MARKET DEMOLITION VICTIM

Though it has been one week since ten - year - old Somtochukwu Ibeanusi was allegedly shot dead by policemen effecting the forceful demolition of the Owerri Main Market on orders of the Imo State Government, the agony , trauma and tragedy of his death still permeate his family house on Oguamanam Street in the state capital .

The street is close to the main market , popularly known as Eke - Ukwu Owerri , which security agents invaded last week Saturday.

Our correspondent noticed during his visit that the house saw a horde of sympathisers trooping in almost every hour .

But it was clear that the deceased ’ s parents , Mr . and Mrs. Isaiah Ibeanusi , were still grappling with the reality of the murder of their only son .

The traumatised parents managed to speak to Saturday PUNCH on the destruction that weapons of law enforcement agents had done in their family .

Mr . Ibeanusi , 52 , struggled with words . But his wife, Ogechukwu , took it upon herself to extensively speak with our correspondent .

She explained that she put to bed two weeks ago and losing her son shortly after was like her world had crumbled at her feet.

Ogechukwu said , “ My husband and I were in one of our shops located in a shopping plaza in the demolition zone , struggling to move some goods inside . We sell phone accessories .

“ As the government began the demolition that day , Somtochukwu and his elder sister, Mmesoma, were packing and arranging goods in one of our others shops in the same area affected by the demolition .

“ All of a sudden , some people rushed in and called my husband . They spoke in hushed tones and he left with them. At that point , I did not know that my only son had been killed .

“ After a while , some people that I know in the neigbhourhood came and asked me to follow them to our house . I refused and told that my husband just left and our goods were still in the demolition zone plaza. They insisted and encouraged me to follow them to the house .

“ When we got to our family house , I was told that my son , Somtochukwu , had been shot . The thing sounded to me like a movie because I couldn ’ t believe it.

“ I was led to the Federal Medical Centre , Owerri , where the news of my son ’ s death was again broken to me . I demanded to see his corpse and I was taken to where the lifeless body of my son was . ”

Ogechukwu said the shock sank in a moment later when she saw the body of her son lying cold on a mortuary slab .

She said , “ One moment , I saw my son alive and a short moment later , he was lying cold and dead on a mortuary slab . I called his name several times but he couldn ’ t talk or respond to me .

“ I called out to him again and again but all I got was silence . That was when I knew that he was dead . I think I broke down at that point and everybody rushed and held me. ”

The grieving mother said all she needed at that point was to see her son , upon hearing her voice , respond , clinging to the hope that a last - minute miracle would raise him up .

She said none of the frantic questions she asked everybody around her was answered .

“ All I was told was that he was shot dead . Shot dead for what? By who ? For what reason ? Was he a thief? They kept telling me to take it easy . Take what easy? When my son , the only one for that matter , who committed no crime was killed in cold blood , how could I take anything easy ?” she said .

Struggling to wipe her tears , the grieving mother said that she , husband , and some others had gone to the Assumpta Cathedral , Owerri , to report the incident to the Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese , Most Rev . AJV Obinna .

According to her , the prelate met with them, consoled and prayed for their family .

When she was asked what kind of a son Somtochukwu was , Mrs. Ibeanusi burst into a fresh round of tears .

She said , “ Somtochukwu was a covenant child . So many things had happened in his life and God had preserved him through them all. The devil battled me many times while Somtochukwu was still in the womb . Only God and I knew what I went through while I was pregnant of him .

“ I call Somtochukwu a covenant child because he was declared dead six months after I gave birth to him . He stopped breathing . It was only God that brought him back to life.

“Somtochukwu was naturally talented . He wanted to become a Catholic priest or a medical doctor . But he had his eyes fixed on becoming a priest more. He had planned that he would enter secondary school at a seminary this September. But death couldn ’ t allow him live his dream. ”

Ogechukwu said her son was talented to the extent that he could dismantle an entire television set , repair and put it back together .

She said he fixed fans around the house and had in fact become their in - house electrician.

“ My great talented son has been murdered . My husband and I have left vengeance for God , ” the woman said .

She said no amount of punishment or justice would bring her son back .

“ I want justice but I don ’ t want the killer of my only son to be killed . Vengeance is of the Lord . We believe as Christians that God will take control , ” Ogechukwu said .

Mr . Ibeanusi also told Saturday PUNCH that he did not want to make trouble with the killers of his son .

“We have left everything for God to handle . I had four shops at the plaza stocked with phone accessories . All the goods in my shops are gone . We sold goods in wholesale and you know what that means to lose goods in four shops , ” he said .

The bereaved father said since the tragic incident , there had been no visit from any government official .

Meanwhile , the state governor, Rochas Okorocha , has ordered an investigation into the killing of Somtochukwu and others who reportedly lost their lives or were wounded during the demolition .

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor , Sam Onwuemeodo, the investigation would bring to the fore a clear picture of what transpired during the demolition , which was carried out with the deployment of soldiers, policemen, Air Force men , operatives of the Department of State Services and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

However , he said the Imo State Police Command had opened investigation into the incident .

The Commissioner of Police of the Imo State Police Command , Mr . Chris Ezike, told Saturday PUNCH that the investigation would reveal the circumstances that led to the death of the ten - year - old boy .

He explained that a post- mortem would be carried out on the body to determine the actual cause of death .

KENYAN SUPREME COURT NULLIFIES KENYAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

Kenya’ s Supreme Court on Friday declared the results of last month ’ s presidential poll “ invalid , null and void ” and ordered the election be re -run within 60 days.

“ The presidential election held on August 8 was not conducted in accordance with the constitution, ” said Chief Justice David Maraga, ruling in favour of the opposition which challenged the declaration of President Uhuru Kenyatta as the winner .

Maraga said this was a majority decision , with two judges dissenting .

The shock ruling was a rare example of a poll result being overturned , with Maraga saying the election commission (IEBC ) “failed , neglected or refused to conduct the presidential election in a manner consistent with the dictates of the constitution” .

Tasks before new Lagos CP, Edgal

Edgar Imohimi, the new Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command.

AS Mr. Imohimi Edgal, yesterday, assumed duty as the new Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, the cosmopolitan city that rarely goes to sleep, no doubt, has peculiarities that call for special attention.

Indifference to rules and regulations, kidnapping, particularly of students, cultism, jungle justice by irate mobs are prevalent in Lagos today, needing the serious attention of any Police.

A statement by Spokesman for the Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said that Edgal assumed office following his confirmation as the new Commissioner in Lagos State by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
According to the statement, “Edgal Imohimi has taken over and assumed duty in official capacity as the new Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, with immediate effect.

“Formal handing and taking over notes went on smoothly between the former and new Lagos State Police Commissioners.”

Until his appointment as Lagos Police Commissioner, Imohimi was in charge of operations in Lagos State.

Owoseni hands over

Famous-Cole’s statement added: “Fatai Owoseni has handed over to the new Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Edgar Imohimi.

“The Command would like to state that at no point in time did the former Commissioner, Owoseni, refuse to obey the lawful directives of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

“Owoseni wished the officers and men of the Command all the best under the leadership of Edgal Imohimi, at the Officer’s Mess, during a conference where senior officers, area commanders, DPOs and HODs were all present today (yesterday).

“The official brief from the outgoing Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, to officers was to devote the same official capacity they once had with him to the efforts of the new Commissioner, to continue to make Lagos State peaceful and crime free.

“Imohimi had a quick security brief with the officers for the public holiday and warned officers to make sure the Sallah break is hitch free with robust Police visibility.”

This is Lagos

Lagos’s special status as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria and, indeed, West Africa, understandably poses a great threat to public security as diverse people from sundry parts of the world and for different reasons come to Lagos on a daily basis.

With a population that is close to 24 million out of the country’s estimated population of 180 million, security challenge in the state is peculiar and, therefore, needs a peculiar solution.

Consequently, successive administrations in the state had evolved various strategies to tackle crimes.

Tackling crimes

Colonel Buba Marwa Administration responded to criminal activities in the state with a security outfit known as Operation Sweep.

The outfit was restructured, re-organised and renamed Rapid Response Squad, RRS, under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, who also devised various poverty alleviation programmes as the economic infrastructure of fighting crime.

Security was also an integral part of the 10-Point Agenda of the immediate past governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, was conceived to institutionalise an enduring public/private approach to security challenges in the state by that government.

Building on the successes of his predecessors, current Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has been working relentlessly, with key stakeholders, to advance security in the state.

To underscore Governor Ambode’s seriousness in ensuring the security of lives and property of Lagosians, the governor re-branded and repositioned the state’s RRS.

Within six month of his assumption of office, he procured and handed over to RRS three helicopters, two patrol boats, 100 motorcycles, 13 BM power bikes, 60 Ford salon cars, 55 Ford Rangers, 40 Toyota Landcruiser SUVs, 31 Armoured Personnel Carriers, APC, as well as Police uniforms and other kits.

8,500 PDP members defect to APC in Rivers

APC & PDP

No fewer than 8,500 members of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State, yesterday, defected to All Progressives Congress, APC, at a rally organised in Port Harcourt by a former pro-PDP group called I see You.

National Leader of I See You group, Mr. Chizi Nyeomasila, said the rally was a forum for local government executives of the group to defect, adding that the group will also organise rallies in the various local government areas for members at ward levels to defect.

He said at the end of the programme at the local government areas, a total of 108,000 of its members would have formally crossed over to APC.

He said they had to leave PDP when they realised that APC had what he termed “a better programme for the state.”

“PDP is a failure in the state. We were there but have now seen that APC will serve the common good of the state better. Like Paul in the Bible, we now see clearly,” he added.

Roll call

Some leaders of APC at the event were Senator-elect, Rivers East senatorial district, Senator Andrew Uchendu; Dr. Seconte Davies, Executive Director Marine Operations, Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, and Rivers State Chairman of APC, Dr. Davies Ikanya.

Dr. Davies, who was a former member House of Representatives (Degema/Bonny federal constituen-cy) said the development was a boost to APC, stressing that the party was poised to right its loss at the last general election.

His words: “We are set to dislodge PDP in the state at all levels. It has started. Now it is two to one at the senatorial level. APC has two senators, while PDP has one. So you can see that APC is set for victory in 2019.”

Nigeria vs Cameroon: Indomitable Lions reject Le Meridien Hotel over ‘juju’

Cameroon officials have claimed they turned away the palatial Ibom Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resorts, because of the fear of Nigerian witchcraft, ‘juju’.

Instead of staying at the five-star hotel, the West Africans made reservations at the plush Davok Suites, ahead of Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles.

The Lions also flew in only on Thursday and will head to the airport and back to Yaounde immediately after the match on Friday.

“We know Nigerians and your witchcraft but you know Cameroon’s witchcraft is also very strong,” Jean Jacques Mouandjo of Cameroon FA FECAFOOT Communications Department told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“So, we decided to pick our own hotel to avoid Nigerian witchcraft. We’re not afraid, we just wanted to keep our players concentrated fully on the match.

“We also wanted to stay away from where there will be too many Nigerians distracting our players. We don’t want anything to affect our players’ focus because we want to win in Uyo.”

FECAFOOT’s young Community Manager, Valery Gweha, even went a step further to say Nigeria defeated Cameroon with ‘juju’ recently.

“That (Desire) Oparanozie goal against Cameroon in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was ‘juju’. I’m very sure. That goal was not ordinary,” Gweha, who is handling media accreditation for Monday’s return leg of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, said.

Blind man arraigned in UK court for watching child pornography

A man who claims he's blind, was arraigned for watching child pornography in the United Kingdom.

Andrew Shaw, 44, claimed he had no idea what he was watching was porn, let alone one that featured underage children, because he can't see.

Shaw of Derby Road, Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire was led into Blackpool Magistrates Court, Lancashire by his black Labrador guide dog. His wife is also blind and was led to the court by her white Labrador guide dog to support her husband. He faces three offences of possessing 71 downloaded obscene images of children on his computer. Twelve of the images are alleged to be of the worst variety.

His lawyer Allan Cobain said he would indicate that Shaw would be pleading guilty to some or all of the offences.

He said: "This is an unusual case as my client is registered blind. He has no sight in one eye and only a small amount in the other. It may be argued that difficulty with his vision makes it difficult for him to put an age to images he downloads. He may think he is looking at 16-year olds."

He successfully asked magistrates to adjourn proceedings so that the Crown Prosecution Service could look at the file again with a view to giving his client a caution. But the lawyer said he would argue to keep the case before magistrates rather than have it sent to Crown Court.

The court heard that Shaw had been under investigation for more than a year. Crown Prosecutor Jim Mowbray said the prosecution case had been carefully looked at before court proceedings had started.

Shaw was granted bail.

GOV. FAYOSE COMMENDS NNAMDI KANU'S 'HUMILITY AND COMMITMENTS TO PEACE''

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has charged the Federal Government to look into political solution for the agitations by ethnic-based groups in the country rather than the employment of what he described as “brute force”.

In his statement he also hailed governors of the South East states for their meeting with leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu saying 'the meeting has provided a veritable platform, which all Igbos must key into otherwise they will remain guinea pig as long as this country exists'.

He appealed to the Federal Government to “allow political solutions to agitations by Nigerians as against the use of brute force,” which, he said had “become the hallmark of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government.” According to him, he remained “committed to the call for full and total restructuring of Nigeria through dialogue and negotiation because it is too late for Nigeria to disintegrate.”

In the aftermath of the killing of a community leader, Osaze Omorogbe, by armed men for leading security agents to foil their operation in Isawo, Ikorodu few months ago, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has donated N5million to the widow and children of a victim.

Presenting the cheque to the widow and children on behalf of the Governor at a solemn ceremony at the family’s residence in Isawo, Ikorodu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community & Communications, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan praised the late Omoregbe for his heroic role.

Hon. Bamigbetan who read the condolence message signed by the Governor, said the late Omoregbe paid the supreme sacrifice while responding to the Government’s charge to community development associations to support its effort to rid the state of kidnappers.

“It is with deep grief that I share your sorrow on the unfortunate death of your father, husband and breadwinner, Mr. Osaze Omoregbe,” part of the message read.

“At a time our administration is consolidating partnership with our communities and their courageous and committed leaders, your benefactor stood up to be counted. He supported the forces of light seeking to crush the notorious kidnappers who had turned your neighbourhood into a jungle of death. In that patriotic response to our call to join hands and collectively secure our communities, he paid the supreme price,” Hon. Bamigbetan added.

Receiving the cheque, the widow, Mrs. Omodunni Omoregbe who was short of words, broke into tears.

Speaking on behalf of the LCDA, the chairperson, Mrs. Jumoke Ademehin-Jumbo thanked the Lagos State Government for coming to the rescue of the family.

Bamigbetan, who led a delegation including the Senior Special Assistant on Community Affairs, Alhaji Tajudeen Quadri; the chairperson of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area, Mrs. Jumoke Ademehin-Jumbo; the chairperson of the Community Development Committee, Alhaja K.A. Damole and their teams, prayed at the graveside of the deceased.

The deceased is survived by his wife, and two children, Adesuwa and Osaze.

Recall that the late Omoregbe, who led the security committee of the Olorunsogo Community Development Association, had alerted the police on hearing heavy bullet shots of kidnappers seeking to capture a victim.

On arrival, the police and soldiers asked him to lead them to the area. They were all ambushed and murdered by the kidnappers.

Vatican supports anti-graft war in Nigeria

POPE Francis

Archbishop Antonio Fillpazzi , the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Embassy of Holy See Vatican, , has pledged Vatican’s support for the anti-corruption crusade and development of education in Nigeria.

‘Apostolic Nuncio’ is the term used for the Pope’s direct representatives to countries.

Fillpazzi said this on Thursday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama.

He said that Pope Francis was interested in assisting the country to address its social economic problem and the challenge of irregular migrants to Europe.

“In the past and in the present, the Catholic has been part of development in education and social economic development and we wish to continue.

“There is no intention to withdraw in this commitment because it is part of our faith and our religion.

“As it is indicated by the president and the diplomatic community, I think that the Catholic Church can do a lot, especially in addressing the problem which sometimes comes from lack of education and information.

“The church will be preaching the gospel and also do orientation to the society, to be an example and solution to the problem of corruption.

“Pope Francis is interested in what corruption is and how to address
the challenge,” he said

According to him, another area of interest for Pope Francis is addressing the problem of immigrants from Africa to Europe in a very daring situation which is the biggest problem of the UN.

He pledged to contribute to the development and enhance the progress of Nigeria as well as making meaningful impact in the lives of Nigerians before the end of his official assignment.

Earlier Onyeama had commended and solicited for the continue support
of the Vatican for Nigeria.

“We appreciate the good work that the Vatican is carrying out in various fields in Nigeria, especially in education and social economic and religious, so we look very much forward for you to continue.

“Though, we should not rely on Vatican to solve our challenge but we certainly look forward to increasing cooperation from the Vatican,” he said.

Onyeama said that though Nigeria had a lot of challenges in security, economy and good governance, but the present administration was doing what it could to address them.

“We are faced with a number of challenges in the country, the first one is security, which we are facing in the northeast and south-south and one or two other areas in the country

“It is a major challenge for us and has led to humanitarian catastrophic, with the displacement of over two million persons.

“We have received a lot of support from the international community for those challenges, but the government has also invested enormous
resources in addressing the challenges.

“However, we are extremely grateful for the support we are receiving from the Vatican to address the huge humanitarian crisis,,” he said.

He said that the government was pushing for diversification of economy by moving away from oil dominated economy to the agriculture and manufacturing sector.

The minister said that the country had also developed a road map and the economic recovery plan, which according to him is very detailed.

He said that government was also putting emphasis on infrastructural
development to enhance the development of economy and job creation for
the youth.

“We are also putting a lot of emphasis on ease of doing business, making Nigeria to be a point of attraction for Foreign Direct Investment to strengthen our manufacturing base,” he said. (NAN)

'Many women cause domestic violence by their actions' – Commissioner for Women Affairs in Lagos, Lola Akande

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Lola Akande, has said that many women, by their actions, are the cause of some of the cases of domestic violence recorded in the state and by extension, in Nigeria.

Akande said this at a programme on Management of Domestic Violence, organised by the ministry in Lagos today.

She was represented at the programme by Mrs Olushola Falana, Director, Women Development Department, WAPA.
According to her, negligence, sophistication, misguided utterances, infidelity, use of abusive words and gullibility on the part of the women, are some of the actions women display that induce domestic violence.
“It is no longer news that many women have lost their lives through domestic violence.

The more we try to put the blame on the men folk, the more we will continue to turn blind eyes to the fact that many women are the cause of the domestic violence we see today.

This is because we fail to understand some important aspects of how most men are wired. Some women also cause violence by using abusive words and misguided utterances that can provoke the men.

But let me also state that a man who beats a woman is a beast, and does not deserve to live with humans. No matter how provoked you may be as a man, please, never raise your hand to beat your wife, ” she said
