“Only God knows why he killed himself” – Widow of man who committed suicide in Lagos lagoon says

Mrs Zainab Oladejo, the wife of Rauf Oladejo, a staff of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, says she is still in shock over the news of her husband taking his own life by jumping into the lagoon last Friday.

The father of eight, was on his way to work, driving the company’s brown Toyota Corolla when he stopped on the third mainland bridge, pretending to be pressed and that he needed to urinate. Suddenly, he jumped, headfirst, from the bridge into the Lagoon.

Reacting to the sad news of her husband’s demise and the way he died, Mrs Oladejo, said she could not give an explanation as to why her husband decided to take his own life, adding that he was a peace-loving husband and father.

She told PUNCH

“God is the only one who sees the intention of his heart for choosing to take his own life; I don’t know what could have been his reason. We have been married for over 40 years and nobody ever tried settling a dispute between us. When he was leaving for Lagos on Sunday, he prayed for us and one of the children followed him to the park. He was a peace-loving man; he was not in the habit of fighting with anyone and anytime he had money, he would buy things for all the children around.”

Labour strike: Aviation unions vow to cripple local, international flights

The unions in the country’s aviation sector have declared their intentions to partake in the indefinite strike scheduled to begin on November 6.

In a notice on Saturday, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and National Association of Aircraft-Pilot Engineers (NAAPE) alerted all airport workers, including agencies, airlines and other relevant business owners across the airports of the planned strike.
The notice was co-signed by Temenu Akinola, NUATE, Frances Akinjole, ATSSSAN, Ocheme Aba, NAAPE and Abdulrasaq Saidu, ANAP.

The unions asked all workers to comply with the directive, saying it would not tolerate any sabotage of the strike action.
“As you are all aware, the NLC, TUC and ULC have jointly declared an indefinite national strike action commencing from November 6, 2018, over the vexed issue of Government unwillingness to implement the report of the tripartite committee on minimum wage review,” the notice read.
“In complying with the directive of the Labour Centres, therefore, we issue this notice to all workers in the aviation sector to withdraw all services from 00:00 hours of November 6, 2018.
“This notice also applies to all businesses and agencies involved with the aviation to be aware of the above situation and adjust their businesses accordingly.
“The general public, especially the international travelling public, are equally notified to avoid or cancel plans to utilise aviation services within the period of the strike.
“For emphasis, all workers must comply with this directive as our Unions will not tolerate any sabotage of the strike action.

Buhari reveals where his 2019 election votes will come from

President Buhari who spoke on Thursday during an interactive session with a select group of Nigerian professionals based in the United States and Canada, disclosed where his 2019 election votes will come from.
President Buhari who warned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the security agencies to ensure that every vote counts in 2019, said he was not hoping to get any vote from the “big men” because they don’t come out to vote during elections.
The Nigerian President who told INEC and security agencies to ensure that Nigerians are allowed to vote, added that they should vote for whoever they want without harassment.
NAN reported that the president also said that he was not slow as some people had assumed, saying he was trying to follow the law, especially as democracy is different from military rule. President Buhari who recalled that he put people in Kirikiri Maximum Prison in Lagos when he was a military head of state and then ensured they remained in custody until they were able to prove themselves innocent, also recognised that Nigerians in the diaspora were talented people and called on them to come to the support of the country, particularly, in education.

“If I win the next election and I survive the next four years, I will do better”.
“I’m always conscious of the ordinary people because they are the ones that always vote for me. A lot of big men have no time to go and queue on the line for hours.
“There were even pregnant women who were on the line for hours and they delivered. They are my constituencies; they always vote for me,” Buhari said.
