I encouraged Malami to meet Maina Abroad - DG DSS

Whiles speaking on Thursday when he appeared before the House of Representatives panel investigating Abdulrasheed Maina, the director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, revealed that he advised the Attorney-general of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to meet with Maina abroad.

 

According to TheCable, the DSS boss said he gave the advice after Minister of Justice, Malami sought his opinion on whether or not to hold the meeting with the former chairman of presidential task force on pension reforms.

 

He said; “The attorney general of the federation sometime in 2016 or 2015, because it was not through a formal document, placed a call to me when he was outside the country.

“He wanted me to advise him whether to agree to see Maina or not in that foreign country. I responded to the attorney general that he should accept to see Maina but he should not see him alone. He should see him with a third party which he did.”

 

Daura also said the DSS provided security for Maina’s after the former pension boss wrote a letter to the secret police, claiming that his life is in danger. “The letter was scrutinised and fears expressed by Maina were also to a large extent established.

 

“Because of the right to life which is guaranteed by our constitution universally recognised, Maina’s case was directed to be looked into so as not to allow his life to be in jeopardy.”

 

He said no agency has written to the DSS seeking to arrest Maina, and added that the secret police had nothing to do with his reinstatement.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, on Thursday made a shocking revelation when she said the former Chairman, Pension Reform Task Force, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Maina, did not receive salary from government after his disengagement.

 

Adeosun disclosed this while appearing before members of House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating the disappearance, re-appearance, re-instatement and promotion of Maina.

 

This is contrary to a what Mohammed Katu, counsel to Maina, had told the panel. Katu claimed on Nov. 23 before the panel that his client received salary up to October, 2017.

 

Denying the claim, Adeosun said that from the records of the ministry, there was no trace of any payment of salary to Maina after he was disengaged from service in 2013.

 

“We have looked very well and we have no biometrics of Maina, so there is no way he could have received salaries,” Adeosun said.

 

Also speaking, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris, said that Maina was last paid salary in February, 2013.

 

According to Idris, from March, he was removed from the payroll.

 

“If there was any payment of salary to Maina, there should be payslips and an account the payments were made; so, let whoever made the claim tender them to support the claim,” Idris said.
