Benue state generated N8.4 billion in 2016- Orubibi [BIRS Boss]

Chairman of Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Mrs Mimi Orubibi Adzape has said that the state generated N8.4billion in 2016.
Mrs Orubibi dropped the hint at the ministerial briefing of the state ministry of finance at state secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalist NUJ, Makurdi recently.

While given the breakdown, Orubibi said that pay as You Earn PAYE brought in N4.7billion, MDAs N3.5billion, Road Taxes, N236m, Direct Pay Tax N406m; consultant returns 223.9m and Others N24m.
Though the state revenue boss said that 2016 revenue was N817m increase to 2015 which she puts at N7.6billion.

She further said that the first two months in 2017 have shown a brighter chance of improved in the 2017 revenue.
According to her, January and February 2017, we generated N884, 200,332.85 and N1, 065,994.76 respectively.
Mrs Adzape however said that only 25 percent of the revenue generated was accrued to state government.

“With the existing law, what we generate is only gross while 75 percent of the money move to MDAs who render essential services while the 25 percent is remitted to state government”, she said.

Benue government drags businessman, AIG to court over N170Million revenue said to be have been collected illegally by the company.

The Benue State Government has sued a businessman, Mr Joseph Orih, his company, M.C. Development Co. Nig. Ltd and the Assistant Inspector General, AIG, zone 4 Makurdi. The suit came up last Thursday at High Court 6A, Makurdi, presided over by justice I Tyoniman.

Through the case filed by the Attorney General of the State and the State Inland Revenue Service, the Benue government wants to recover N170 million said to have been collected illegally by Orih and his company and is also seeking N1bn in general damages.

Among reliefs sought by the state government is an order of interlocutory injunction against the Respondents/Defendants restraining them by themselves, servants, agents or privies from collecting any tax/revenue from any part of the state or interfering with the activities of the Applicants/Plaintiffs or their appointed revenue agents pending the determination of the suit.

While the state government is ready for trial, counsel to the AIG pleaded for time to settle out of court. On his part, counsel to Orih pleaded for time because he is indisposed.

Counsel to the BIRS, Emmanuel Kpojime said, “we are looking forward to the adjourned December 5, 2016, date; the Benue State is setting a good example by resorting to ‘Due Process’ and the ‘Rule of Law’ through judicial interpretation and resolution rather than to the coercive power of the state to enforce its rights and privileges. This will surely consolidate our democracy.”

BIRS Team Spotted Checking & Impounding Vehicles In Makurdi.

The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS)  in conjunction with the Ministry of Works and Transport has engaged the services of some consultants to enforce defaulters of vehicle registration as well as motorcycles in the state.

 The Jachipas Nig. Ltd and Teshimo Nig. Enterprise Ltd who will serve as enforcement team are to ensure that vehicles of defaulters of vehicle and motorcycle license registration and renewal  are checked and impounded by the enforcement team.The enforcement officers were spotted all over Makurdi, checking and impounding defaulters' vehicle. By this ,all vehicles impounded on the offence of License are to pay a fine of #5,000 while defaulters on other road offences are to pay a fine of #2,000.
