#InternationalWomensDay: ‘Be Bold for Change’ Saraki Urges Nigerian Women

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, celebrates the 2017 theme of International Women’s Day, ‘Be Bold For Change’, in recognition of all women in leadership throughout Nigeria!

In a Press Statement signed by his Special Assistant on Gender Advocacy, Ms. Fatima Mohammed Kakuri, Saraki stated that International Women’s Day presents an opportunity every year for us to recognize and celebrate the talent and achievement of Nigerian women and girls.

“We must appreciate the fact that 49.6% of our mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters own or manage 48% of the informal micro-businesses in Nigeria,” he said, “Such numbers are truly significant because they demonstrate that Nigerian women contribute immensely to our social, economic, and political development.”

Saraki also said: “In everything that we do, we need to be bold for change and work towards the redefinition of opportunities for future generations of women. We need to challenge bias and inequality by standing up when women are excluded from positions of leadership. However, all of this can only be achieved through synergy of effort between men and women.”

The earliest Women’s Day observance was held on February 28, 1909, in New York and organized by the Socialist Party of America.

On March 8, 1917, in the capital of Russian Empire, Petrograd, a demonstration of women textile workers began, covering the whole city. This was the beginning of the Russian Revolution.

Seven days later, the Emperor of Russia Nicholas II abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. March 8 was declared a national holiday in the Soviet Russia in 1917.

The day was predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

With this year’s theme: ‘Be Bold for Change’, the official website for the day quoted this: “For International Women’s Day 2017, we’re asking you to #BeBoldForChange Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world – a more inclusive, gender equal world”

The event first started to campaign for better pay and rights for women, but is now aimed at inspiring females across the world
It is a global celebration which aims to inspire women in countries across the world.

This year International Women's Day falls on Wednesday, March 8.
The tradition began with the first National Women's Day in 1909 and its roots are in campaigning for better pay and voting rights.

Today EasyJet has operated a flight with an all-female crew. The captain, first officer and four cabin crew for the flight from London Gatwick to Madrid were all women. The flight was captained by Kate McWilliams, believed to be the world's youngest female commercial airline captain.
Here, Mirror Online takes a look at 10 things you need to know about the global celebration.

3. During an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen the following year, Clara Zetkin, leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, suggested the idea of an International Women's Day.
She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day. The idea was met with unanimous approval.

4. 1911 saw IWD honoured for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19. Over a million people attended rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

5. On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1965, it was declared as a non working day in the USSR.

6. International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March that same year and has remained the global date for the event ever since.

7. In 1975, the United Nations gave official sanction to International Women's Day and began sponsoring it.

“Women are sometimes deliberately unkind to one another” Betty Irabor recounts her traumatizing experience with a ‘vicious’ nurse

As countries all over the world prepare to observe the International Women’s Day tomorrow, publisher of Genevieve Magazine, Betty Irabor took to her Instagram to recount her experience with a rude and vicious nurse after her painful and heartbreaking stillbirth.

“Is this your first pregnancy?”The nurse in green uniform asked me as she looked at the screen of the scan machine.
“No, I smiled at her. I was ecstatic because I was going to be a mum a third time… Then the bombshell!!! “If this isn’t your first pregnancy, then how come you didn’t know there has been no heartbeat?”! “What was she saying?”

I sat up straight and stared at her. Shocked! I was still processing what I thought she meant when she hit me again with; “Get up and dress up, go back to your Gynaecologist for an evacuation before you get an infection”. I began to cry, I was dazed, I was traumatized by the news and the viciousness of the nurse. I took one long hateful look at her and cried all the way home. Evacuation over, I decided I wasn’t going to let this matter rest. I wasn’t going to allow this nurse in a so called prestigious Lagos hospital unleash her bitterness, her bile and hate on any other woman. I was afterall a journalist, so I put pen to paper and told my story to Quality mag, Classic mag and other media where I was a guest columnist. My articles generated public outrage over the nurse’s conduct and the hospital had no choice but to invite me for a meeting. I was asked to describe the nurse, I did. She was summoned and we came face to face once more. Surprisingly, she did not deny any of my accusations, she simply said she was sorry. Sorry?

The authorities apologized and promised to take appropriate disciplinary
measures against the nurse…..

It’s the International Women’s Day tomorrow, beyond the theme # Beboldforchange which addresses the issue of women transcending gender barriers, women must understand that they are nurturers first and foremost.. We are sometimes deliberately unkind to one another. We sometimes can’t deal with the success or happiness of other women. As we join the conversations and narratives tomorrow in the pursuit of gender equality and fight against cultural biases that inhibit our growth and potential, let us remember that that change begins with how we as women see , treat and fight for other women.. change truly begins when we do!

Be Bold for Change

For the first time ever, the International Chamber of Commerce Nigeria is collaborating with the Network of Entrepreneurial Women to hold a hopefully annual event for Nigerian women called “Be Bold for Change”.

The event, which is taking place at NECA House, Plot A2 Hakeem Balogun Way, Alausa Ikeja, Lagos, starting at 9:00 am, is aimed at celebrating the many achievements of women, including social, political, economic, and cultural accomplishments.

Another goal of the organizers is to empower women and girls all over Nigeria, getting closer to gender equality.

Breakfast with W

Another one of the International Women’s Day activities aimed at empowering Nigerian ladies and help them achieve more will take place at 141 Idewu Street Olodi-Apapa, Lagos. The “Breakfast with W” is an event organized by Access Bank. Starting at 9:00 am, this three-hour event will focus on many points concerning the position of women in the Nigerian society.

There you will be able to marvel at the many accomplishments of the women in the country, as well as work on networking, visibility, self-confidence, and other traits every lady needs to succeed.

Cake exhibition

One of the most fun activities for Women’s Day this year is happening at Oakwood Park Hotels, Lekki Expressway, Lekki Peninsula, Lagos. This event is the perfect place for anyone who is passionate about cakes, especially if you’re fond of baking and want to improve your skills.

Besides showcasing the most beautiful cakes and techniques, the organizers of this event will also reveal how to run a cake business and how to bake, decorate, price, and deliver cakes.

Sushi night

If you’ve run out of Women’s Day program ideas and want to simply spend a fun evening with your girlfriends, a sushi night can be a great alternative to other events.

Luckily, Lagos is full of popular and respectable restaurants serving Japanese cuisine, so you just have to pick one, book a table, and spend the evening enjoying sushi and your company.

The most beloved sushi places in Lagos are Bonzai, Sakura, Izanagi, and Bungalow Restaurant.

Karaoke

After exploring some of the Womans Day themes we’ve listed above, why not finish the night by a fun and entertaining karaoke session? If you love music and can’t live without singing, this kind of celebration is right up your street. And even if you’ve never sung in public before, the International Women’s Day is the perfect time to start! Leave your doubts behind, pick your favorite song, and start having the night of your life!
