CHINA ORDERS NORTH KOREAN FIRMS TO LEAVE COUNTRY

China has ordered North Korean companies in the country to shut down by January as it applies UN sanctions imposed following Pyongyang’s sixth nuclear test, the commerce ministry said Thursday.

The ministry said the companies, including joint ventures with Chinese firms, have 120 days to close from the date the United Nations resolution was adopted, September 11.

The announcement comes days after China confirmed that it will apply another major part of the sanctions: a limit on exports of refined petroleum products to North Korea starting October 1 and a ban on textiles from its neighbour.

China’s application of UN sanctions is particularly biting for North Korea. Beijing is Pyongyang’s main ally and trading partner, responsible for around 90 percent of the hermit nation’s commerce.

The United States has pressed China to use its economic leverage to strongarm North Korea into giving up its nuclear ambitions.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Beijing this weekend for talks with China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

CHINA BANS CHILDREN FROM ATTENDING CHURCH SERVICE

The Chinese Government has banned children from attending churches in the country in a bid to tighten their grip on religious activities.

The ban also prohibits children from attending religious sermons and other activities in several provinces across the country.

The ban comes after over one hundred churches in Wenzhou , China's Zhejiang

province reportedly received a notice from government officials informing them that young people will be banned from entering churches.

According to UCA News , the ban also promises that officials will investigate government approved churches and underground congregations who operate outside the tightly controlled Beijing -run Catholic and Protestant Churches.

A researcher for Amnesty International, William Nee , who spoke to MailOnline UK , said, “At this point, it’s unclear how widespread the ban on children attending church services are in China, but these alarming reports seem to be coming in from fairly diverse areas throughout the country.”

Nee further said that the move reflects the tightening control of religion in “particular Islam and Christianity under the present administration” in the Asian country.

She added, “In an important speech on religion last year, the President, Xi Jinping , said that young people must study science, believe in science and develop a ‘correct’ worldview and set of values.

“It could be that the government is concerned that young people going to church or religious activities may challenge their monopoly on truth and the government’s ability to instill its own historical narratives and worldview through the public education system.”

Beijing Authorities install face scanners in public toilets to prevent tissue paper theft

Authorities in Beijing have installed face scanners in three public toilets near the Temple of Heaven, a popular tourist site, in a bid to stop paper theft by elderly residents.

According to local media reported on Tuesday, anyone who wants a carefully rationed 60-centimetre strip of paper has to have their face scanned by a high-definition camera, and they can only request toilet paper once every nine minutes.

After the first three days of testing the new machines, the amount of toilet paper consumed at the public restroom near the south gate of the Temple of Heaven dropped from 20 to four rolls per day, the report said.

“This is how things should work,” a resident told Beijing Evening News.

“I saw people taking endless amounts of toilet paper. This problem can now be fixed by high-tech.”

Apparently, some older residents had been stuffing as much as 10 metres of toilet paper into their bags, ignoring bathroom attendants’ complaints, the report said.
Social media users debated the issue in detail.

Some looked to expose flaws in the brave new regime: “What happens if [two bathroom goers] are twins?” asked Weibo user Donkeybaby.
Others voiced privacy concerns, annoyed at yet more surveillance in a city that boasts over 46,000 CCTV cameras.(dpa/NAN)
