ROCHAS EXPLAINS WHY HE'S BUILDING STATUES

Shortly after unveiling the statue of the Liberian President, Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, was asked by a journalist while he is building statues and he replied

"To immortalize people so our children yet unborn can read a piece of them. History is dying in Africa. We must keep history alive. In the next 100 years to come, most of us will not be here but this will stand for children to read stories and mold their character. If leaders are not mortalized, there will not be history for children yet unborn'.

ANGRY YOUTHS SET MONARCH'S HOME ABLAZE

Youths numbering over 200 on Tuesday set ablaze the palace of the traditional ruler of Obollo Autonomous community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government of Imo state , Eze Edwin Mbaeyi .

A source in the community, who simply identified himself as Collins told our correspondent that the palace was burnt over the refusal of the monarch to coronate one Chief Chijioke Njokuocha as the traditional prime minister of the community after the death of his father , Chief Samuel Njokuocha .

According to the source , the monarch’ s preference for one Chief Jasper Nwachukwu angered the youths who had gathered to witness the coronation of Chief Njkuocha .

The youths took laws into their hands when the event failed to hold .

He said , “Our traditional ruler has insisted on making Chief Jasper Nwachukwu our traditional Prime Minister as against the rightful owner . The position of the prime minister in our community is hereditary.

“ After the death of our prime minister , Chief Samuel Njokuocha, our custom , and tradition demand that his first son , Chijioku Njokuocha , should be coronated.

This issue started since 2016 and our traditional ruler has remained adamant and wants to go against the culture and tradition of our people. Even the office of the governor on conflict resolution had mandated him to coronate the rightful person but he vehemently refused.

After much persuasions , he agreed to do the coronation today ( Tuesday ) after he had boycotted it one month ago . To the chagrin of the people who had gathered with much excitement to witness the ceremony he declined . The youths were embittered . They had no other option than to set the palace ablaze after the monarch had fled".

'MY SON WANTED TO BECOME A REVEREND FATHER', MOTHER OF 10-YEAR OLD OWERRI MARKET DEMOLITION VICTIM

Though it has been one week since ten - year - old Somtochukwu Ibeanusi was allegedly shot dead by policemen effecting the forceful demolition of the Owerri Main Market on orders of the Imo State Government, the agony , trauma and tragedy of his death still permeate his family house on Oguamanam Street in the state capital .

The street is close to the main market , popularly known as Eke - Ukwu Owerri , which security agents invaded last week Saturday.

Our correspondent noticed during his visit that the house saw a horde of sympathisers trooping in almost every hour .

But it was clear that the deceased ’ s parents , Mr . and Mrs. Isaiah Ibeanusi , were still grappling with the reality of the murder of their only son .

The traumatised parents managed to speak to Saturday PUNCH on the destruction that weapons of law enforcement agents had done in their family .

Mr . Ibeanusi , 52 , struggled with words . But his wife, Ogechukwu , took it upon herself to extensively speak with our correspondent .

She explained that she put to bed two weeks ago and losing her son shortly after was like her world had crumbled at her feet.

Ogechukwu said , “ My husband and I were in one of our shops located in a shopping plaza in the demolition zone , struggling to move some goods inside . We sell phone accessories .

“ As the government began the demolition that day , Somtochukwu and his elder sister, Mmesoma, were packing and arranging goods in one of our others shops in the same area affected by the demolition .

“ All of a sudden , some people rushed in and called my husband . They spoke in hushed tones and he left with them. At that point , I did not know that my only son had been killed .

“ After a while , some people that I know in the neigbhourhood came and asked me to follow them to our house . I refused and told that my husband just left and our goods were still in the demolition zone plaza. They insisted and encouraged me to follow them to the house .

“ When we got to our family house , I was told that my son , Somtochukwu , had been shot . The thing sounded to me like a movie because I couldn ’ t believe it.

“ I was led to the Federal Medical Centre , Owerri , where the news of my son ’ s death was again broken to me . I demanded to see his corpse and I was taken to where the lifeless body of my son was . ”

Ogechukwu said the shock sank in a moment later when she saw the body of her son lying cold on a mortuary slab .

She said , “ One moment , I saw my son alive and a short moment later , he was lying cold and dead on a mortuary slab . I called his name several times but he couldn ’ t talk or respond to me .

“ I called out to him again and again but all I got was silence . That was when I knew that he was dead . I think I broke down at that point and everybody rushed and held me. ”

The grieving mother said all she needed at that point was to see her son , upon hearing her voice , respond , clinging to the hope that a last - minute miracle would raise him up .

She said none of the frantic questions she asked everybody around her was answered .

“ All I was told was that he was shot dead . Shot dead for what? By who ? For what reason ? Was he a thief? They kept telling me to take it easy . Take what easy? When my son , the only one for that matter , who committed no crime was killed in cold blood , how could I take anything easy ?” she said .

Struggling to wipe her tears , the grieving mother said that she , husband , and some others had gone to the Assumpta Cathedral , Owerri , to report the incident to the Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese , Most Rev . AJV Obinna .

According to her , the prelate met with them, consoled and prayed for their family .

When she was asked what kind of a son Somtochukwu was , Mrs. Ibeanusi burst into a fresh round of tears .

She said , “ Somtochukwu was a covenant child . So many things had happened in his life and God had preserved him through them all. The devil battled me many times while Somtochukwu was still in the womb . Only God and I knew what I went through while I was pregnant of him .

“ I call Somtochukwu a covenant child because he was declared dead six months after I gave birth to him . He stopped breathing . It was only God that brought him back to life.

“Somtochukwu was naturally talented . He wanted to become a Catholic priest or a medical doctor . But he had his eyes fixed on becoming a priest more. He had planned that he would enter secondary school at a seminary this September. But death couldn ’ t allow him live his dream. ”

Ogechukwu said her son was talented to the extent that he could dismantle an entire television set , repair and put it back together .

She said he fixed fans around the house and had in fact become their in - house electrician.

“ My great talented son has been murdered . My husband and I have left vengeance for God , ” the woman said .

She said no amount of punishment or justice would bring her son back .

“ I want justice but I don ’ t want the killer of my only son to be killed . Vengeance is of the Lord . We believe as Christians that God will take control , ” Ogechukwu said .

Mr . Ibeanusi also told Saturday PUNCH that he did not want to make trouble with the killers of his son .

“We have left everything for God to handle . I had four shops at the plaza stocked with phone accessories . All the goods in my shops are gone . We sold goods in wholesale and you know what that means to lose goods in four shops , ” he said .

The bereaved father said since the tragic incident , there had been no visit from any government official .

Meanwhile , the state governor, Rochas Okorocha , has ordered an investigation into the killing of Somtochukwu and others who reportedly lost their lives or were wounded during the demolition .

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor , Sam Onwuemeodo, the investigation would bring to the fore a clear picture of what transpired during the demolition , which was carried out with the deployment of soldiers, policemen, Air Force men , operatives of the Department of State Services and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

However , he said the Imo State Police Command had opened investigation into the incident .

The Commissioner of Police of the Imo State Police Command , Mr . Chris Ezike, told Saturday PUNCH that the investigation would reveal the circumstances that led to the death of the ten - year - old boy .

He explained that a post- mortem would be carried out on the body to determine the actual cause of death .

KOWA PARTY SLAMS ROCHAS OVER KILLING OF 10-YEAR OLD BOY IN OWERRI MARKET DEMOLITION

Reactions continues to trail the killing of a 10-year old Somtochukwu Mbanusi allegedly by agents of Imo State government who had come to forcefully demolish the Eke Ukwu Owerri Market in Owerri while the boy was trying to protect the property, as KOWA Party on Monday condemned the act, saying it was particularly pained by the killing.

KOWA gave this stance in a statement issued by its National Secretary, Comrade Mark Adebayo, saying it condemned unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms what it described as government-backed armed banditry that claimed innocent lives.

The party also described as irresponsible and callous comments of the Imo State government in the aftermath of the coldblooded murder especially of an innocent minor who committed no crime, even as it called on the Human Rights/Civil Society Community to urgently rise up in unison and take necessary actions.

“We condemn unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms this government-backed armed banditry that claimed innocent lives, and the irresponsible and callous comments of the Imo state government in the aftermath of the coldblooded murder especially of an innocent minor who committed no crime.

“In a Gestapo-like onslaught, the Eke-Ukwu Owerre Market was ferociously and fatally attacked by the state government’s environmental agency backed by heavily-armed thugs, military and police personnel that reportedly led to the loss of lives.

“We call on the Human Rights/Civil Society Community to rise up in unison and take necessary actions, as a matter of urgency, to bring to book all culprits involved in this dastardly crime no matter how ‘highly’ placed,” the party said.

This was just as KOWA Party called on Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, to tender unreserved apology to the people of the state and ensure that he takes immediate steps to pay adequate compensations to the victims starting with a minimum of one hundred million Naira only to the family of each dead victim.

Speaking further, KOWA expressed grave shock at what it described the “persistent wave of indiscriminate demolition exercises” being carried out across the country by state governments.

According to the party, many state governors, who promised the people during electioneering campaigns that they would embark on people-oriented projects have suddenly resorted to aggressive anti-people and anti-poor policies that further impoverished the already pauperized majority of Nigerians.

It said this was especially with regard to destroying homes and businesses of the masses under the guise of development, beautification, road expansion, and the so-called megacity.

KOWA listed Lagos, Osun, and Ogun state governments, among others as being perhaps, the worst culprits in perpetration of such act.

“It is a crime against humanity to forcefully relocate a people and destroy their means of livelihood under whatever guise without providing affordable and accessible alternatives for them.

“This evil trend has been gaining currency across the country for some time now and it is time to stop it by a collective peoples’ action(s). Infrastructure and environmental beautification cannot take precedence over the fundamental wellbeing of the people.

“In most states where markets are destroyed, the markets subsequently built to replace them are made so costly as to be inaccessible by those who originally do business there. Same thing for houses built by government which the people cannot afford.

“It is for that reason that there are many desolate markets and housing estates in Lagos and other states only useful for rodent, reptiles, and criminal hideouts.

“As a political Party founded on a solid ideology of Social Democracy, KOWA Party believes that government policies must not be to the disadvantage of the people who elected that government nor be a punitive return on their democratic investment. Sensitive policies and projects that affect the livelihood and habitation of a people must be implemented with extreme caution through painstaking community engagement processes and dialogue.

“KOWA Party stands with the people of Imo State in these dark hours of what can best be termed government terrorism. We offer to extend free legal services to all the victims and their families. We call on the Imo State governor to tender unreserved apology to the people of Imo State and ensure that he takes immediate steps to pay adequate compensations to the victims starting with a minimum of one hundred million Naira only to the family of each dead victim. This is without prejudice the prosecution of government and security agencies – including government-backed militias – that partook in that murderous attack against the people of Imo State.

30 IMO WORKERS ARRESTED FOR N650 PENSION MILLION FRAUD

Thirty members of staff of the Imo State Pension Board have been arrested by operatives of Department of State Services for pension fraud to the tune of N650m.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo, the suspects were nabbed after an investigation showed that 92 cheques were used to perpetrate the fraud.

The cheques, Onwuemeodo said, were written in the names of people who were not pensioners.

He said, “About 30 pension board workers have been handed over to personnel of the Department of State Services over monumental fraud through pension cheques amounting to N650m. The cheques in question are 92, with some of them containing N10m and above.

“Most of the fake cheques were written in the names of people who are not pensioners or who do not exist, while some were written in the names of existing pensioners, who have three cheques or more. Only one have the actual amount the pensioner ought to have as his pension. The fake cheques have amounts from N10m and above.”

The governor’s spokesperson said the government had on Monday began to pay the pensioners 100 per cent of their outstanding pension arrears, with pensioners from eight local government areas, including Nkwerre, Ideato South, Njaba, Nwangele, Isu, Obowo, Onuimo and Orsu, being paid.

He said the government chose to pay directly to the pensioners following the discovery of the “mind-boggling fraud” in the pension cheques.
