Nigerian celebrities who claimed to have suffered physical abuse in the hands of their spouses open up.

RECENTLY, when actress, Mercy Aigbe sought justice for the violence she allegedly suffered in the hands of her estranged husband, Lanre Gentry, the news was greeted with mixed feelings. This is rightly so because most of the times, victims of domestic violence, perhaps out of the trauma they have been subjected to, prefer to just walk away, leaving all the bitterness behind.

That the Nigerian society has taken a firm stand against violence against women is not in doubt. For instance,  recently, when a soldier, Sulaiman Olamilekun, assaulted Nollywood actress, Ebere Ohakwe, aka Jewel Infinity, justice was swift.

The Nigerian Army was quick to sentence him to 28 days imprisonment with hard labour for battering the actress.

However, it is a different ball game when it comes to domestic violence. Although victims are beginning to find their voice, seeking justice still appears a mirage. Below are some of Nigerian actresses who claimed to have suffered physical abuse in the hands of their spouses but never sought for justice let alone getting one.

……………………………………..

Katherine Obiang

Actress and TV presenter, Katherine Obiang was once married to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host, Frank Edoho. The actress recounted her ordeal during the stormy years of her marriage; “Just to dare to argue with your husband is like a challenge in your home. The woman is challenging the man and tempers flay and then you snap, then there is a slap. He says ‘I am sorry it is a mistake’ then says ‘sorry I won’t do it again,’ then he does it again, again and again.”

Monalisa Chinda

Monalisa Chinda is also an actress and TV host who was once married to Segun Dejo Richards. She has always spoken up against domestic violence ever since. In December, 2014, she lent her voice to the campaign against domestic violence at the Pearls Conference in Abuja. In a series of tweets, Monalisa revealed that she was once a victim of domestic violence. She also encouraged ladies to avoid abusive relationships.

“I was once a victim of domestic violence but survived and even stronger. So yes, you can. ‘I say NO to domestic violence and you should as well,” she tweeted.

Chika Ike

When actress Chika Ike walked away from her marriage of five years, it was for various reasons. She was to later reveal that the deciding factor for her was a recurring incidence of physical abuse.

She said of the incidence; “It’s been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes, I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence.

“I’ve been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I’ve tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve that there’s really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence.

“I was a victim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.”

Tonto Dikeh

In a no-holds-barred interview, controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, recently opened the eyes of the world to the series of physical abuse she allegedly suffered in the hands of her husband, Churchill Oladunni.

The mother of one revealed that her estranged husband, Churchill, really humiliated her, claiming that the Nigerian Embassy in Ghana has nude photos and videos of her when she ran to them during one of their fights.

The actress also showed photographs of injuries she allegedly sustained in the hands of her husband.

Georgina Onuoha

Georgina Onuoha is one vocal actress who has an opinion on almost any given topic. So it came as no surprise when she shared on Instagram the experience of a woman who claimed to have been molested, beaten and humiliated by her husband.

She also gave some marital advice; “I can imagine her state of mind and what she went through. I for one would have said this same prayers 6 years ago with so much hate in my heart and can count many others who will equally be saying same prayers. But grace, mercy and forgiveness surpass the pain of wickedness. I succumbed to God’s grace and strength.

“May God touch every soul going through pain, give them the grace to forgive and wish them well. Forgiveness is not for the other person, but rather for your own peace of mind and sanity. May God heal us all.”

Ayo Adesanya

Beautiful actress, Ayo Adesanya describes her marriage to her former husband and actor, Goriola Hassan as a loving relationship which was fun until the beatings started and got worse.

In an interview on Moments with MO on Ebony TV, the actress talked about her domestic violence experience.

Recounting her experience, she said that she couldn’t let go because the same man touches her lovingly, caters to her needs and calls her baby. She describes the experience as confusing.

She also urged women to watch out for men who shove them here and there.

Hadiza Adzay

Although she is not an entertainer, Hadiza Adzay, the estranged wife of musician Zaki Adzay, said that she suffered bouts of physical abuse during her union with the singer.

“He slapped me on the face so (and said) ‘get up you must abort this pregnancy today. Now that I am married to you, you want to hook me with pregnancy because I am a celebrity.’ Then there was a wardrobe in our room so I put my tummy in there and then he continued beating me. He had some folic acid in his hand and said I should swallow it and abort the pregnancy. When he gave me I said he should allow me take water, thank God the door was open so I ran away,” she recounted.

Mercy Aigbe-Gentry

With her husband now remanded in Kirikiri Prison on a three-count charge of domestic violence, assault, and threat to life, pending the outcome of a trial which commenced during the week, Mercy Aigbe might just have positioned herself as the poster girl for justice among celebrity victims of domestic violence.

According to information, Lanre Gentry was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.

The couple have been married for seven years and the union produced a son.

Woman cries out: My husband orders me to kneel down, stretch my hands while flogging me

A 39-year-old housewife, Yemisi Akinwunmi, has told a customary court sitting in Agege, Lagos, how her husband ordered her to kneel down and stretch forth her hands before flogging her. She is seeking to end her 20-year-old marriage and free her from the pangs of daily corporal punishment meted out to her by the husband.

She told the court, “My husband constantly beats me and whenever he wants to do so, he tells me to kneel down and stretch my hands like a pupil before caning me.
“He often threatens to kill me.”

She said there is no love between them anymore.

Yemisi said her husband of 20 years was an irresponsible man, who has refused to take proper care of her and the children.

She explained further, “I made efforts to secure a loan for my husband from a cooperative bank to start a small business with a promise by him to pay back in installments.
“But after a few months, he refused to pay and attempts to get him to refund the money were unsuccessful.
“My husband started threatening to kill me and dispose of my corpse without anybody knowing. “I am fed up with the marriage; there is no love between us again.
“I can no longer bear the pains and humiliations.”

She prayed the court to dissolve the marriage and compel the respondent to be responsible for the welfare and education of the children.

However, the respondent, 49-year-old Wasiu, while denying the allegations, told the court that the petitioner, “Became promiscuous when I lost my job.”

He also pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage.

Wasiu said he had caught his wife in the act of adultery, adding, ”My wife later told me that she was fed up with the union and she moved out of the house with the children sometime in 2015.
“However, after much pleading, she returned home later in 2016 only to start engaging in adultery; I have caught her on several occasions.

“She stopped cooking for me since July 2016 and finally moved out of the house.”

President of the court invited the estranged couple to his chambers for a possible resolution of the crisis and later adjourned the case to April 11.

Why domestic violence on women will not stop – DSVRT

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, DSVRT, has stated that over 85% of domestic violence in the state lack evidence.

DSVRT is coordinated by Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, to provide assistance to abuse victims.

A survey carried out by the team showed that evidence for 88% of cases recorded within Lagos were either destroyed by the abuser or misplaced by the victim.

A report by the Lagos State Government in 2016 indicated that victims of the cases perpetrated within the period under review could not provide evidence that would assist the agency in court or in settling the case amicably between both spouses when the need arises.

This further led to 88% of husbands denying ever physically assaulting their wives.

The report further showed that of the 20% domestic violence survivors, who had sought the assistance of the government agencies to get redress, 18% withdrew their cases from court.

It also disclosed that 85% of victims blamed third party interference which includes mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, igniting the domestic violence.

78 per cent of the victims had reported their spouses to religious leaders to persuade them to desist from the act. But the abuser never stops, arguing that the spouse was involved in extramarital affairs.

98% of the husbands stated that they attack their spouse because they believe she was having extramarital affairs.

On why they resort to abusing their wives, 70% of the perpetrators noted that they were survivors of verbal and emotional abuse while growing up.

The report also showed that while the abuse persists, efforts by government agencies to persuade the wife to leave the home to prevent further abuse proved abortive.

The report indicated that the reason for this was because 90% of the women were financially dependent on their husbands. It argued that 74% of the victims were still interested in the relationship but all they demanded for was that the physical assaults should stop.

On why they are still interested in the relationship, the graphics showed that 98% of the abused wanted to remain in the relationship because of their children.

My Husband Can Have His Dowry Back – Angry Wife Seeks Divorce from Abusive Husband

Picture Illustration

A civil servant, Mrs Victoria Ayegba, on Monday, offered to repay the dowry paid on her, in a bid to end a seven-year-old marriage that has turned to a nightmare.
“I am ready to refund the dowry. I will deposit it with the court registry so that he can go there and collect it,’’ she said.
Victoria, 37, is, however, pleading with the Upper Area Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State to grant her custody of the seven children produced by her crisis-torn marriage to one Ezekiel Ayegba.
She said that she and Ezekiel had been living separately for the past two years because of their endless quarrels.
“For the past seven years of our marriage, there has been no peace and harmony between us. Two years ago we separated. Ezekiel who calls himself a pastor has over the years made life unbearable and miserable for me.
“I have never been happy since we got married. He always finds fault in everything I do. To him, I have never done anything good. All I get from him is emotional pain.
“He has worsened it by disappearing to an unknown place with our children. The worst is that he has deprived me of seeing and having access to my children.
“I do not even know where he has taken them because they are no longer with him,” she said.
The civil servant pleaded with the court to compel Ezekiel to return the children to her. “I cannot live without them,’’ she cried.
Ezekiel failed to appear in court, in spite of summons served on him.
The Presiding Judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case till March 16 for hearing.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE :Nigerian woman bitten on the eye by her abusive husband

Another case of domestic violence has been brought to the attention of the public and what makes this one a bit unusual is that the woman's husband bit her on her eye.
Who bites a woman on her eye? Exactly the question Blessing Timidi Digha who shared the story on Facebook asked.

Mrs.Ayeyemi has been a victim of domestic violence for a long while and she has been enduring for the sake of the children. Her husband beats her regularly that at some point the police had to be called in and he was made to sign an undertaking never to lay hands on her again.

But one thing about these abusers is that they rarely ever stop. This time the husband took it further and after beating her as usual, he bit her eye, almost costing her her sight. He also threatened to bathe her with acid. The erring husband is now on the run due to the undertaking he previously signed and the consequences of that. It is believed that he is still in Akure though.

Another reason why Mrs. Ayeyemi stayed with her abuser was because her family members kept advising her to stay and make it work. Her father was the only one who ever supported her, but he is dead now. Following this latest abuse, the victim has decided never to go back and has put plans in motion to move out with her children.

See screenshots of the post detailing the abuse below.
